Liquor changed everything. At least Jason and Jensen believed that as they both eyed the other’s partner and noticed how relaxed their body language was. From Jensen’s vantage point, Grant was leaning against the burly man’s shoulder. His hand was hidden beneath the table cloth but Jensen was sure it’s resting comfortably on Jason’s lap. He’s almost certain because that’s exactly where Jared’s hand is at the moment.
Jason noticed how the taller fellows accent crept out and how he’s slouched against the smaller man’s shoulder. He glanced over at his own costar to find beautiful brown eyes half hooded and to feel strong fingers inching nearer and nearer to places only touched in private. Jason glanced over at Jared and from the move of his upper arm, he gathered that the shaggy haired brunette was giving similar treatment to his co-star. Jason smirked and ran his hand over his hairless head. He supposed the four of them had more in common than he thought.
Jensen smiled up at Jared and the taller man leaned down to hear what his partner was saying. A look of shock then embarrassment colored the young brunette’s face and his hand instantly materialized atop the white linen tablecloth. Jason tried for the same thing but Grant seemed to have lost his hearing and kept yelling out “what?” Jason decided to just extract Grant’s wandering hand and held it lovingly but firmly on the table.
It seemed that both Jensen and Jason were the designated drivers for the evening whether they wanted to be or not. Both Grant and Jared drain their final mug of beer while both Jason polished off the remains of Grant‘s dinner and Jensen began looking around for their waiter.
“Would you like to come back to my place for a nightcap?” Jensen asked a bit too loudly across the table.
When Jason turned to check with Grant, he found him already nodding yes. Though his eyes tell Jason he’s tired, he knows Grant won’t take no for an answer.
“Make it coffee,” Jason suggests, sparing a quick glance at Jared who seemed almost as out of it as Grant.
“Agreed,” Jensen said with a knowing smile. He waved their waiter over, ordered dessert to go and asked for the check.
Jason is nudged in the ribs by Grant, who obviously wants him to remember his manners and offer to pay for dinner.
“It’s alright,” Jared piped up, noticing the display. “It’s on the studio. Don’t forget to get a receipt,” he added, turning back to Jensen.
“Yes ma’am,” Jensen muttered.
When the four men made it back out into the night air, it did wonders for their partners. Grant, though not latching on to Jason’s arm leaned close to his shoulder. The air straightened him up a bit and he managed to make it back to their car without an assist from Jay.
“We’ll follow behind you,” Jason muttered and opened the door for Grant like a perfect gentleman.
“I’ll circle around and pull up beside you,” Jensen informed, pulling his lanky costar along.
“They seem nice,” Jared slurred, bumping into Jensen.
Jensen cast a glance over his shoulder in time to see Jason reaching over to buckle his own costar in. Even with just the lamppost for illumination, Jensen recognized the longing look Grant cast over his partner as the bigger man reached across him. The look reminded him of Jared and their first night out together. After a few drinks, it was clear the kid was crazy about him. The feeling was mutual but Jensen tried to play it cool. His last on set romance led to his character being written off the show.
“Come on lover boy,” Jensen chuckled, turning his attention back to Jared. “We’ll have coffee and dessert and then send our guests back to their hotel. We’ve got an early call tomorrow.”
“Yes sir,” Jared saluted and nearly lost his footing as he struggled with his hand eye coordination.
The drive to Jensen’s home was less than forty-five minutes. Once out of the night air, Jason noticed how at home the two men seemed together. He felt a small pang of jealousy, wishing he and Grant could have a place together. Jared disappeared towards the back of the house calling out that he was making the coffee. Jensen followed behind after making sure the two older men were seated and comfortable on the sofa.
“They seem close,” Grant noted, scooting over a bit closer and nestling under Jason’s outstretched arm.
“Close like friends or close like us?”
Grant rested his head on Jay’s shoulder. “Like us,” he answered wistfully.
Jason nodded. “I was thinking the same thing.”
------------------
“They seem close,” Jared drawled, pulling down plates from the cabinets and setting up the coffee service.”
“You mean they seem gay,” Jensen answered bluntly.
Jared shrugged before agreeing.
“Well, even if they are, we are not having a makeout session in front of them. Just remember that.”
“If you had a few drinks in you, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. I’d be peeling you off my body. Besides, they could probably use some friends who understand how it is.”
“And maybe while we’re at it, we can start a rumor about one of them dating Paris.”
The last remark stung. Jared hadn’t started that rumor nor was he trying to hide his sexuality by it. He reminded Jensen about it again.
“That wasn’t my idea. It was Chad’s.”
“Now there’s a man who needs a beard if I ever saw one,” Jensen shot back.
“So are you planning on being an ass for the rest of the night or are we going to entertain our guests,” Jared huffed.
“I’m shooting for both.”
Neither man realized just how loud they’d been arguing. Grant was practically sober now as he and Jason listened to the lover’s tiff going on just a few feet away. It reminded him of a similar spat they’d had over Andy Andrews. Even to this day, Grant cringed when he saw the footage of how he behaved that day. Much of it was edited out but he felt for Jared and Jensen at that moment, knowing how hard it was to keep up appearances when you worked day in and day out with someone you loved.
“G, maybe we should leave?”
“If we leave, they’ll know we know. It might make them uncomfortable on the set tomorrow.”
Grant was just about to answer when Jared stormed passed them, murmured something about not feeling well and instead of storming out the house, stormed up the stairs. Jensen appeared moments later carrying out coffee and dessert as if nothing was wrong. Only his eyes were red-rimmed and the cocky smile he’d displayed earlier was faltering.
“Why don’t you go check on your friend?” Jason suggested. He too remembered the terrible fight he and Grant had over Andy and how he had to pull his lover aside and reassure him that nothing had changed between them. Jason knew that letting these things fester, only made things worse.
Jensen studied the two men sitting so close on the couch and smiled a grateful smile.
“We’ll show ourselves out,” Grant called over his shoulder.
“Thanks,” Jensen added and bounded up the stairs.
Jason reached for another slice of cake when he felt Grant’s eyes trained on him.
“I’ll take it to go,” he said, wrapping the sweet treat in a napkin and standing.
It took them more than an hour to get back to the hotel. The two men had no idea where they were going. Fortunately, they realized their rental had a GPS device and managed to follow the directions back to the hotel. Jason could tell that Grant was in a pensive mood. He was no doubt thinking about the two men and their secret relationship. He didn’t dare hope for some Jacuzzi time with Grant tonight.
“Let’s turn in G. We’ve got a long day ahead of us.”
By the time they climbed into bed, neither could sleep. Grant curled up against Jason and lay restlessly against him. A three a.m. phone call was the only evidence that either had of finally drifting off to sleep. It was an assistant from the show given the task of waking the two men and reminding them about their 4:00am call. As the two prepared for the first days shoot, their minds were on Jensen and Jared and how they’d fared together after they left.
