“Wha...what?”
Gerard stared at his friend in shock. “I have cancer.” Frank repeated slowly.
“How? When?”
“Leukaemia. I found out 4 days ago.” Gerard took a shuddering breath. “Oh Frankie. I’m so sorry.”
“Yeah well, now you know.”
“But why? Why didn’t you just talk to us? Why did you...?” Tears welled in Gerard’s eyes. Frank put a hand out resting it on Gerard’s arm. “Because I didn’t want this for you, for the whole band. I thought it would just be easier if no-one ever knew...or suspected...”
“Frank...we all care so much about you. You dying wouldn’t save us any hurt...I for one would die if I lost you...”
“But Gee! We talk about these kind of things all the time to our fans! I’ve seen how badly it affects you, all of us! I couldn’t bare to do it to you! It’s too close to home!”
“Frank. All of us have been touched by cancer in some way or another, but that just makes me all the more determined to get you well again. We always said we wanted to save kids’ lives. Now we have to save yours.” Gerard gave Frank a genuine smile which he returned albeit more unsure. Gerard sighed slightly, getting to his feet. “I need to go call Mikey.”
Frank shot out his hand and grabbed Gerard’s arm. “Don’t tell him, please.” He begged.
“Frank, they all have a right to know.” Frank’s grip loosened slightly as he stared into Gerard’s face, studying his features. “Let me then.” Gerard raised an eyebrow at him. “Are you sure?”
Frank gave a shaky nod. “Yeah, I’ll tell them all together.” Gerard gave a small nod. “Alright.”

Frank sat quietly with his own thoughts. He heard the door go and looked over to see an unknown face enter the room. “Mr. Frank Iero?” Frank inclined his head slightly. “Yeah. Who’s asking?”
“I’m Brandon. I’m your assigned psychiatrist.”
“What so I have to see a shrink now?”
“It’s for your benefit Mr. Iero. Considering...”
“Considering what?! That I tried to commit suicide?! That I’ve got cancer and I’m so fucking scared that I’d rather die than have to face this?! To waste away in this bed?! Well I already know! Thanks!” Angry tears began to pour down Frank’s cheeks.
Frank looked away and then heard another voice. “Frank?” The voice was hardly above a whisper, it sounded like it was about to crack. He glanced towards the source, guilt sparking in his chest like flame in a rupturing gas pipe, as he saw the bassist standing in the doorway, his brother standing just behind him, a steadying hand on his shoulder. “Oh god...Mikey...” Mikey didn’t respond just continued to stare at the youngest member of the band in the bed. “Mikey...god...I’m so sorry...I didn’t want you to find out like that...I...”
The next thing he knew Mikey had bundled into him, sobbing into his chest. Frank held fast to him, feeling if he let go in that moment the whole world would crumble. Gerard escorted w:st="on">Brandon from the room before approaching to sit on the edge of the bed, rubbing soothing circles into Mikey’s back as Frank held him close.
Mikey glanced up into Frank’s eyes. “It’s not true is it? Please tell me it’s not true...” Seeing Mikey’s desperate stare almost broke Frank’s heart as he had to force himself to shake his head. “I’m sorry Mikey...I can’t do that...” This caused another set of tears to spring to Mikey’s eyes, grabbing at the front of Frank’s hospital gown so tight his knuckles went white.
Frank glanced at Gerard. “Ray and Bob?”
“On their way.” Gerard told him as he continued to try and console his brother.
***
Quarter of an hour later Ray and Bob knocked on the door to Frank’s room. They entered and saw Frank sitting in the hospital bed, reading something in his lap. Gerard was sitting next to him in a chair, Mikey beside him, obviously finding his hands very interesting as he stared at them. The door creaked ever so slightly and Frank glanced up and gave a small smile before placing the magazine on the side. “Hey guys.”
The two men approached the bed. “What you been doing to yourself then?” Ray joked causing Frank to avert his eyes.
“You might want to sit down?” Gerard told them, motioning to two more chairs opposite them. They did so, looking even more thoroughly confused.
Frank took a deep breath. “A few days ago I went to the doctors feeling really tired and a bit under the weather generally. He got me to have a blood test.” Frank trailed off and Gerard put a comforting hand on his lower arm. “They found something... abnormal...so 2 days ago he had me come in for some more tests...”
“What did they find?” Ray asked quietly.
“I have leukaemia.” They both gasped, Bob brought a hand to his mouth in shock. “Why didn’t you tell us Frankie?”
“Wait.” Gerard interrupted. “There’s more.” Frank glanced to him, widening his eyes. “They have to know Frank.” Frank closed his eyes and nodded before turning back to his friends. “When I got the results...I didn’t know how to process it...I didn’t want to tell you guys cause I didn’t want to...hurt you I guess...of course cause I didn’t talk about it...things just got worse...I kinda...I...oh god...” The tears welled in Frank’s eyes as he tore his gaze from he crazy haired guitarist and drummer. “I took an overdose...” The admission was so quiet if the room hadn’t been silent up till that point no-one would have even heard him.
There was a long silence before Bob raised a hand and smacked him upside the head. “Ow!!” Frank rubbed the back of his head indignantly.
Gerard, Mikey and Ray all stared at Bob in shock. “Bob!” Gerard was the first to speak. “What was that for?!”
“He’s an idiot.” Bob stated matter of factly. “He knew we would be there for him no matter what! He was just running scared!”
“Well wouldn’t you?!” Mikey stood up, towering over him. “It is fucking scary and I don’t blame him!”
Ray and Bob also got to their feet, shortly followed by Gerard trying to keep the peace. Ray spoke. “He didn’t need to be so drastic! People recover from this kind of thing all the time and we would have helped him!!”
“Hey guys. He’s fine. Surely that’s all that matters?” Gerard said, putting his hands between his fuming brother and the other two men as they all glared daggers at one another. “What’s done is done. Let’s just focus on getting Frank better.”
“But he...!”
“HEY!!” This stopped the argument dead in it’s tracks. They all looked down at the smaller boy lying in the bed below them. “I am here you know!!” All 4 friends sunk back down in their respective chairs, muttering their apologies. “I know it was dumb okay? I just didn’t know what else to do...Bob’s right...I was running scared...”
“Frankie...” Gerard was cut off by a doctor entering the room.
“Sorry but I need to speak to Mr. Iero alone please.” The other 4 band members nodded slowly and left the room.
***
“Coffee?” Ray asked, Mikey and Gerard nodded. Ray slowly walked away and after a couple of seconds of awkward silence Bob followed.
“What are we gonna do Gerard?” Mikey asked softly glancing up at his brother who was sitting next to him on the chairs in the corridor outside Frank’s room.
“It’ll be okay Mikers. We’ll get him better.”
“But what if...?”
“No Mikey. No what if’s. We will get him well again.” They looked to the side and saw two nurses and a doctor walking into Frank’s room, wheeling a trolley with them. Gerard leapt to his feet immediately re-entering the room. They saw the nurses beginning to sit Frank up as a doctor set up a rather menacing looking needle... “What’s going on?”
All the people in the room turned to look at the two brothers standing in the doorway as they edged further into the room. Frank waved them off slightly. “Gerard...its fine. They’re just setting up a drip for my chemo...that’s all...” The words he spoke were meant to sound reassuring and calm, however they seemed to have the opposite effect, just making Gerard more agitated.
“Already?” Mikey squeaked.
“Best to get the treatment underway as soon as possible. Are you going to stay for this...or?”
“Guys...I’ll be fine...really...”
“We’re staying...I’m not leaving him.” Gerard said decisively. Frank gave a small smile. They were so determined. They were his best friends and how much they cared for him brought tears to his eyes. “Gee...I...”style='mso-special-character:line-break'>
“No arguments, Frank.”
So what did you think? I hope things aren’t progressing too quickly. I mean I’ve been touched by cancer in the past in my family but I was quite young and I don’t really know the time frame’s they leave imbetween treatments starting and things like that...let me know what you think. Slayya
