Chapter 2
~51 weeks later~
Gerard anxiously checked the calendar for what seemed the millionth time that day. His brother, sitting at the computer by which the calendar rested, looked at him and huffed.
“How many times are you gonna check the damn thing before you go?” he grouched.
“I don’t know.” Gerard felt like he was going to throw up. The butterflies wouldn’t leave him alone. They’d been fluttering in his gut ever since he met Taliyah on the beach a year ago. It was that time of year again…would she show up? She’s promised to come back and find him. “What if she doesn’t show up?” His brother groaned.
“Then she’s not back yet. Geez, Gerard, you act like she’s you’re freakin’ soul mate.” He wiped his face with his hand in exasperation. -Maybe she is. - Gerard thought with a surge of nausea.
“But she said she would come back.” He answered his younger sibling.
“Well, you said she’s a Gypsy. Maybe they’re not done ‘traveling’ yet; did you think of that, smarty pants?” His brother replied, spinning in the office chair to face Gerard.
“But I’ve gotta try, right? If she comes back and I’m not there, she might leave and never come back! I could lose her…” Gerard trailed off, embarrassed he’d said that aloud.
“Lose her? What, do you guys have some super secret weirdo relationship where you never write or talk but on one day a year? Cause if you do, you’ve been holding out on me. And that, sir, is rude.” Mikey crossed his arms, looking to Gerard for an answer.
“No, I told we only kissed for a second, and then she left.”
“You ran her off?! Oh that’s hilarious!” Mikey held his sides as he laughed. Gerard smacked the back of his head.
“Not funny, Mikey. She had to leave, but trust me, she didn’t want to.”
“Someone’s confident.” Mikey gloated.
“Oh shut up, Mikey. You’re not helping.” Gerard settled heavily into a nearby recliner, sulking. Mikey regarded his older brother. He’d never seen him in such a huff over a girl before. His pity for the guy was overwhelming. Gerard had better thank him for this later.
“I’ll go get my trunks.” Casting a pointed look at Gerard, he noticed his brother wore a smile. Finally.
When Mikey rejoined his brother ten minutes later, Gerard was just slapping his phone shut.
“Hey, the guys are meeting us at the shore.” He said as they walked down the path to the gravel road.
“Only you, Gerard.” Mikey shook his head.
“What?”
“You’re really romantic, you know that? Bringing your little brother and friends to meet a girl you haven’t seen in a year.”
“I’m nervous.” Gerard said in his own defense, kicking a rock sullenly.
“I’m only doing this once, ok? After today, you’ll have to do this crazy ritual thing by yourself.” Mikey knew Gerard had been coming to the shore every night for the past two weeks, hoping to see the Gypsy girl. He’d disappear for hours on end, then finally come home smelling of salt and rotting sea creatures with a sad look on his face. Hopefully she would appear soon and he could start sleeping normally, instead of having to help Gerard sneak back in at three in the morning.
“Fine. Just today. Thanks, Mike.” Gerard smiled shyly.
“Yeah.” Mikey said, the brotherly way of saying ‘It’s nothing’.
The guys were already there on the shore, waiting impatiently. Gerard watched his friends from a distance. Goofy, hyperactive Frankie. Soft-spoken, observant Ray. And quiet, tough, bad ass Bob. His friends were such an odd mix he sometimes wondered how they ever got along, much less liked each other.
“Why are we here?” Frank asked, confused before the conversation had begun.
“Because Gerard is nervous.” Mikey answered. “Some Gypsy girl has him…I don’t know…bewitched or something.”
“She was here this time last year, and she promised me she’d come back.” Gerard said, glaring at Mikey. “And I’m not bewitched, I’m…intrigued.”
“Oh whatever. Same thing, really.” Mikey said, as he looked west. “The sun should set in about an hour or so. Gerard, didn’t you say she was here on a full moon?”
“Yeah, just staring at the water.”
“You’ve got a few more days until the full moon.” Mikey said, his suggestion hidden in his words.
“I’m not leaving, Mikey.”
“Ok, then.” Mikey threw his shirt at Gerard and the others followed suit. They took off across the sand and into the frigid New Jersey ocean, playing and joking with one another. Well son of a bitch. They’d left him.
