“Calypso! Where’s my…? Thank you,” I took my black wife beater from my sister as she handed it to me.
“Viggo and Johnny are coming today, aren’t they?” She asked.
“Yep. Apparently, they’re bringing friends as well,” I answered. My mom had gone to school with Viggo Mortensen in New York before moving to her mom’s family’s property here in Avalon, South Carolina.
Avalon is in the middle of no where it seems like, but the nearest city is only 30 or so miles away. We’re a really small village, actually. Everyone knows each other here and I love that about it.
“Come on; Mom wants us to weed the garden today. Before they get here,” She added.
“Oh fine. Let’s go,” The two of us walked out into the sunshine, as I tied my hair back. As always, we started on opposite sides of the garden, steadily working our way to each other.
At lunch, Mom told us exciting news. “I have another one of those doctor seminars to go to tomorrow, girls. Viggo and Johnny will both be here by then, so don’t fool around, okay?”
“We won’t,” Cal answered.
“Are Vanessa, Lily-Rose, and Jack coming too?”
“You know they are, Eris,” Mom shook her head at my grin. “And so is Henry before you ask.”
“Excellent.”
“Both of you, out to the river. Enjoy the rest of your day,” She shooed us both out of the kitchen.
“Meet you out back in five minutes,” I told Cal. Both of us ran up in opposite directions to our rooms. I grabbed one of my books and I knew Calypso was getting her drawing pad and pencils.
Together, we walked to the river that ran behind our house, about half a mile back. I sat in the weeping willow tree and Cal sat below me, skirt flared out around her. I glanced down to see what she was drawing. “The house?” I asked.
“Yeah. Just thinking about it, really. I mean, what did it look like when great, great grandpa Harris had it built?”
“Ask Mom when we get back, she probably knows,” I opened my book to where I’d left off the night before.
The river we were sitting by wasn’t really a river. It was a stream actually, but it was really big and deep so everyone in the village called it a river. And I know people wonder why Calypso and I still live at home with our mother, but the truth is, we don’t know any other home. Avalon has been our home since we were little. And besides, the house is more than large enough to fit all of us without us pissing each other off too much.
I think at some point I’d fallen asleep because the next thing I knew, I was falling and landing in cold water. I came up, sputtering, to see Viggo, Johnny, Henry, and two others I couldn’t see clearly laughing at me. I climbed out of the river and turned to my sister. I raised an eyebrow at her and she nodded at Viggo.
“Damn you, Viggo! What the hell was that for?!” I demanded.
“Oh hush. It’s only a little water and you won’t melt,” He laughed. I punched him in the arm then. Not hard, of course, but I still did.
“Hi,” I smiled at the two I couldn’t see clearly before; Garrett Hedlund and Orlando Bloom. “Have you idiots even been to see Mom yet?” I turned back to Viggo, Henry, and Johnny.
“Yeah. She told us where to find you,” Henry informed me.
“She’s so nice. Come on then,” We started walking back to the house. “I’m Eris, by the way,” I walked backwards so I was facing Orlando and Garrett.
“Viggo told us,” Orlando smiled. “I’m Orlando.”
“Garrett,” He smiled when I turned to him after shaking Orlando’s offered hand.
“Wonderful,” I turned back to the house just as the village priest was leaving it. “Hello Father!” I called to him.
“Hello girls! Have a nice afternoon, have you?” He called back, stopping a moment.
“We did. And you?” Cal responded.
“Wonderful, but I’m afraid mine isn’t quite over yet. I’ll see you girls soon. Oh and happy early Beltane!” He wished us.
“Happy late Easter,” Cal called back.
“Beltane?” Garrett asked as the priest left.
“Yep. It’s a Pagan holiday on the first of May so he’s very early in wishing it to us. But he already wished us happy Ostara, the first day of spring, on the 21st,” I answered.
“I’m still a little confused though. Viggo and Johnny did tell us that the three of you are Wiccan priestesses but the Christian priest coming here kind of throws me off,” Orlando admitted.
“Being such a small community, most of us don’t fight with each other. There’s no point to it. Half of the village is Wiccan and the other half is Christian. We’ve all learned to accept each other’s beliefs and don’t concern ourselves with them,” I shrugged. “We know each others’ celebrations and holidays that way we don’t interrupt anything for anyone,” I added as we walked in the back doors.
“You have solar panels,” Orlando stated looking behind him at the aforementioned panels.
“There are more on the roof, actually,” Cal spoke up. “We can’t really have much electricity out here because the electric company doesn’t like to come out here. We got one of the guys in the village who works for the electric company to help us hook up the town to solar power. That’s why there’s no lit up signs or street lamps in the village.”
“Except the one in front of town hall, but that one’s still an oil lamp,” I added.
“It’s like traveling back in time but forward at the same time here,” Garrett stated. I understood what he meant though. We used little modern technology on the outside, but all our TVs and computers were run on solar energy. We avoided using electric lights in our homes as well, using oil lamps and candles instead sometimes.
“We still have our lights and such, we just don’t use them as much in the summer as we do in the winter,” I explained, just so they knew. “Mommy!” I shouted. “Viggo threw me in the water!”
“How old are you, Eris? You’re acting like a child,” Mom walked in.
“24. And if I’m acting like a child, so is Viggo. He’s the genius who threw me in the water and he’s older than me. Yell at him,” I pouted and crossed my arms.
“Viggo, act your age, not your shoe size. There, happy?” Mom turned back to me.
“Ecstatic, thank you,” I stuck my tongue out at Viggo as soon as my mom turned around.
“Eris!” Lily-Rose ran out of the living room and jumped into my arms.
“Flower!” I spun the 8 year old around, both of us laughing as I did. “And how is my favorite flower?” I asked her, as I stopped and held her on my waist.
“Good. Jack starts school soon, did you know?”
“Really? That is so exciting.”
“I know!” She squealed.
“Eris? How come you call Lily a flower?” Jack pulled on my shirt to get my attention.
“Because, Jack, lilies and roses are two kinds of flowers,” I explained.
“Come on, I’ll show you,” Cal offered her hand and led Jack out back to the flower garden.
“Eris, you are all wet,” Lily stated bluntly.
“I know. That’s ‘cause Viggo dropped me in the water,” I answered.
“And Daddy didn’t stop him?”
“Nope; Your daddy just laughed at me,” I sighed dramatically.
“Daddy! That is not very nice. Mommy! Daddy laughed at Eris when she got all wet and it was not nice! Daddy gets no desert after dinner.” She declared, twisting to look at her mom.
“Salut, Nessa,” I said hello to her in French. Cal and I always tried to do that with her.
“Is that right? Well, I have to agree with you, ma chere. No desert for Daddy,” Vanessa smiled as I set Lily down, giggling.
“I win,” I whispered.
Author’s note: I know it doesn’t seem like there’s anything missing here, but there is. Calypso’s point on everything for example. That’s actually why we’re doing it this way, so you get Eris and Calypso’s POV on each day and such. I won’t always be the first to write a chapter like I am this time, so next time it may be my chapter that seems like things are missing from. On that note, here’s a link to Calypso’s half of the story: http://celeb.adult-fanfiction.org/authors.php?no=1296847973. Check it out so you don’t get confused!
