Warnings in intro chapter!!
After breakfast, I walked into Eris’ room, she took one look at me and asked, “Calypso, where’s my…?” Knowing she wanted her black wife beater, judging from her cargo pants and how well I know her, I grabbed it out of the pile of clean clothes and handed it to her. “Thank you.”
“Viggo and Johnny are coming today, aren’t they?” I double checked.
“Yep. Apparently, they’re bringing friends as well,” She answered. Johnny had found us through Viggo. It had been a few years before he got together with Vanessa Paradis and he’d asked Viggo if he knew of a good place to get away from the world. Viggo called Mom and Johnny’s been our friend ever since.
“Come on, Mom wants us to weed the garden. Before they get here,” I added, knowing she’d try to avoid it all day by saying she was waiting for Viggo and Johnny.
“Oh fine. Let’s go,” She sighed, throwing her long hair up as we walked. As always, we started on opposite ends of the garden and made our way toward each other, meeting in the middle shortly before lunch.
At lunch, Mom looked across the small dining table in the kitchen and said, “I have another one of those doctor seminars to go to tomorrow, girls. Viggo and Johnny will both be here by then, so don’t fool around, okay?”
“We won’t,” I was quick to assure her. Besides, what kind of trouble did she think we could get into in Avalon?
“Are Vanessa, Lily-Rose, and Jack coming too?” Eris asked. I almost reached across and hit the back of her head. Of course they were, Johnny always brought them with him when he came to see us.
“You know they are, Eris,” Good, I’m not the only one who thought that was a stupid question. “And so is Henry, before you ask.”
“Excellent,” I grabbed Eris’ plate and took both of ours to the sink.
“Both of you, off to the river. Enjoy the rest of your day,” She shooed us out of the house.
Eris went to one of her books and I got my drawing pad and pencils before we left. I sat under the willow tree beside the water and let my skirt flair out around me. Looking toward or home in the distance, I decided to draw it.
When our great, great grandfather Harris Chavan built it, it had only been three stories high and 100 feet long. Now it stands at four stories high and 200 feet long. My great grandfather had added to it shortly after his father passed away. I decided to draw it as it would’ve stood when Grandfather Harris had it built.
When Eris asked about it, I told her about wondering what it originally looked like and she said to ask Mom. How would Mom know, she never saw it then. Though she might have pictures of it, now that I think about it. Still, I think Eris already had her mind in her book. I looked at the spine of it. Eclipse again, for maybe the tenth time. I guess I can’t blame her though; she’s impatient for the next one to come out.
After finishing the drawing, I turned and stuck my feet in the water. “Eris?” I called. No answer. I looked up and her book was laying on her chest, opened to where she’d stopped reading and dozed off. I sighed, stood, bookmarked her page, and set it beside my art pad. I sat back down and stuck my shoeless feet back in the water.
“Don’t even think about it,” I turned quickly to see Viggo about to scare me.
“Damn it! How did you know I was there?” He asked.
“Same way I know Henry, Johnny, and two unnamed people are behind the oak tree,” I shrugged. “It’s what I do. They can come out now, by the way,” I smirked and turned back to the water. “I’m Calypso, by the way.”
“Orlando.”
“Garrett,” The two unnamed people gave me their names.
“That’s Eris in the tree,” Viggo stated. “How long has she been out?”
“I’m not sure, actually,” Instinctively, I knew to move away from the water and went to stand beside Orlando and Garrett. I was right. Viggo scooped Eris off the lowest branch of the tree. He turned and dumped her into the chilly water.
She came up sputtering as the others were laughing at her. I moved forward slightly, intending to help her out of the water if she needed it, but she didn’t. She looked to me and raised an eyebrow in a silent question. I nodded my head to Viggo, who was still laughing.
“Damn you, Viggo! What the hell was that for?!” She demanded.
“Oh hush. It’s only a little water and you won’t melt,” He laughed. She punched him in the arm then.
“Hi,” She smiled at Garrett and Orlando. “Have you idiots even been to see Mom yet?” She turned back to Viggo, Henry, and Johnny.
“Yeah. She told us where to find you,” Henry informed us both.
“She’s so nice. Come on then,” I grabbed mine and my sisters stuff as we started walking back to the house. Eris introduced herself to Orlando and Garrett as we walked.
As we neared the house, both of us saw Father Micheal leaving the house. “Hello Father!” Eris called.
“Hello girls! Have a nice afternoon, have you?” He called back, stopping a moment.
“We did. And you?” I responded.
“Wonderful, but I’m afraid mine isn’t quite over yet. I’ll see you girls soon. Oh and happy early Beltane!” He wished us.
“Happy late Easter,” I called back, even though it was still early for Beltane. Eris explained Beltane and then why the Christian priest was at out house to Garrett and Orlando. I stayed quiet, as I normally do.
“You have solar panels,” Orlando said as we walked past them. They were on the other side of the garden from the house.
“There are more on the roof, actually,” I spoke up. I’m quite proud of our solar energy. “We can’t really have much electricity out here because the electric company doesn’t like to come out here. We got one of the guys in the village who works for the electric company to help us hook up the town to solar power. That’s why there’s no lit up signs or street lamps in the village.”
Eris went on to explain about the lack of using our electric lights in the summer. When we got into the house, she called for mom. I giggled slightly as she proceeded to tell her about Viggo throwing her in the river. I set my art stuff and her book on the table in the kitchen before watching Eris, Viggo, and Mom.
When Jack asked why Eris called Lily-Rose ‘flower’, I understood him better. He didn’t have the kind of name you could change like that. Still, I offered to take him out back and show him the lilies and roses we grow.
“See, this one here is a lily, and that one is a rose. But be very careful with the roses, they have thorns on them,” I explained calmly.
“Are they mad?”
“No. It’s just so people and animals can’t hurt them. Like you have your daddy, the roses have their thorns,” I explained.
“Oh, okay,” He nodded his understanding. “Come on, Jackie. Let’s see if we can help my mommy cook dinner tonight,” I suggested, holding out my hand.
We got inside, just as Eris whispered, “I win,” to Johnny.
“Mom, me and Jackie want to help cook dinner tonight, okay?” I asked.
“Sure. I was just getting ready to start. Follow me,” She raised an eyebrow slightly at the nickname and it clicked in my head rapidly; Four Brothers, Jack ‘Jackie’ Mercer and Garrett was standing just behind me. Oh well, Jack seemed to like the nickname.
“They’re here,” I whispered to my mom in passing. I’d felt both of them as I’d passed them, reaching out to just one of course, but still recognizing the other.
“Does she know?” Mom whispered back.
“I don’t think so. Not yet at least; but she will,” I assured Mom before smiling down at the soon to be six year old attached to my hand.
By the time we served dinner, Garrett and Eris had been talking non-stop to each other. He seemed to be interested in every little thing about our village, as far as I could tell.
Author’s note: Okay, obviously there are things missing here. The bits you’re missing are in Eris’ chapter. We want to show both points from each event and day, that’s why we’re writing this way. Anyway, here’s a link to her page: http://celeb.adult-fanfiction.org/authors.php?no=1296847971. You might want to check out her half of this chapter.
