“Well I don’t think you should just go!” Gerard sneered, cornering Luca in a hallway. He was so pushy. It was only the second week of school, and he was already getting a little too touchy. She didn’t like it--at all.
“Gerard, it’s an assignment I have to do! I’m sorry!” She said, pushing him back a foot or so. He just jumped right back with some lame retort.
“I still don’t think you should!” He said, basically ending the conversation. It was always like that between them at that point in time. All they ever did was fight. And about stupid things too. Like music, and teachers. Especially ones who taught drama. Luca hated it when Gerard bad mouthed Mr. Iero. He was really cool.
“You know, I don’t get you sometimes. You’re happy one minute, and the next you have to bitch about every little thing, Luca.” Gerard said, bringing it back up again. He never let anything die.
“Well what about you? I didn’t even start anything today.” She answered back, her back to him. He evidently didn’t like that, because he pulled her by her arm to get her to face him and she yelped.
“Get your hands off of me.” She spat, wrenching her arm out of his grip. She stepped back a few steps, and he stepped forward. He always needed to be in control. Always. He didn’t see a teacher turn the corner when he grabbed her shoulders and pushed her roughly against the wall, making Luca scream out in pain. Gerard quickly tried to cover her mouth, but the teacher heard it, and Mr. Iero appeared a second later, eyebrows raised.
“Luca, is he bothering you?” He asked sarcastically. She cast a glance between the two and bit her lip, shaking her head. Her eyes told a different story, and he could read her like a book. “Well, don’t let me catch you rough housing again, understood?”
“Yes sir.” Gerard said angrily, wanting the ‘fag’ to go away already. Mr. Iero turned his back and Gerard flipped him off. He turned back to Luca and the bell rang loudly. She wouldn’t meet his eyes and he took her to class and then went to class himself.
She was finally rid of Gerard for another class period, but she knew next hour he would be there. She didn’t like him, but she loved him so much…
When she got to drama after lunch, she knew she had some explaining to do. Mr. Iero would definitely ask her questions about what he had seen and heard. She didn’t know what story to tell.
To her surprise, he didn’t talk to her at all… Until the end of the period. He held her back after class.
“What exactly happened, Luca?” He asked, pulling her into his office. She shrugged, her face blushing.
“He just pushed me up against the wall, you know all that teenage angst stuff.. He got too carried away with his passion for me…” She said quickly, just trying to say something. The bell rang and she jumped into him. “Can I go?”
“I guess, but will you come see me after school if you want to tell me anything?” He asked, holding her shoulder. She nodded. Mr. Iero made her nervous, but not with the fear of him finding out about what went on outside of school.
She left quickly, not looking back. She knew in her heart she would be coming back. She only hoped Gerard wouldn’t mind. Mr. Iero sighed after her. He hoped she was okay. Luca was one of his most promising students, he could tell already.
The bell rang for the end of the day and Luca ran to get down one floor and over to see Mr. Iero before her bus left. He was standing in the hallway, this time with a green stuffed tiger. He had so many weird toys.
“Ah! Luca, I thought you weren’t going to show up!” He said, smiling widely. She felt herself blush and nodded.
“Uh, what you saw.. I can’t really call it innocent, because it wasn’t. He got angry with me, and shoved me into the wall. It really was my fault.” She said. He furrowed his eyebrows, but before he could respond, she was gone. He really hoped she didn’t think like that for real.
Luca got to the bus, and was intercepted by a fuming Gerard. She cringed, hoping he wouldn’t leave marks this time. He didn’t. He just left marks on her heart and esteem, like usual.
How could she hate someone and love them at the same time? She cried for hours that night, hoping that something would change. Somehow, someway, things would get better. And fast.
The next Monday saw the start of technical crew. In drama, a series of odd things happened to Luca. First, they were supposed to show a certain emotion. A moron named Jimmy was picked to show desperation. He couldn’t do it. When Mr. Iero got up to show him, he focused on something to show desperation. He looked directly towards Luca. His eyes met hers. Her heart stood still. He cleared his throat, adjusting his sight up over her head somewhere. “There! Focus on Superman, and say ‘Yes!’ with desperation, Jimmy!” he said, Mr. Iero’s eyes flickering over her a second time. Luca’s face felt hot and she knew she was blushing.
The went down to the auditorium the second half of class, and as Mr. Iero moved to open the door, he brushed up against Luca. She felt an electric pulse of some kind. She had no idea what it was. Was it merely a schoolgirl crush? On a teacher, no less? Had he actually been staring at her to show he was desperate for something, or was she reading too much into it? Did she feel him stop for a split second when her skin touched his?
He opened the door and everyone went onto the stage to learn about the directions on stage. He got to up center, staring directly at Luca. The eye contact was kept the whole time. She couldn’t bear to look away, and neither did he. She felt if she did break eye contact she would just melt away, ceasing to exist. His words seemed to go to mush as she listened to him talk.
She had no idea what was going on, but she knew it felt right and wrong at the same time. ‘Not good..’ She thought, letting her eyes close momentarily and still seeing the eccentrically funny teacher behind her eyelids.
