Brian, Jimmy, and Johnny were once again in the kitchen, this time sprawled out on the floor, with Matt and Zack talking about whatever they happened to think about. Zack was feeling shy and nervous again and he knew his mate could tell. Matt had pulled him into a protective embrace soon after their three pack mates had arrived, his relaxed body pressed against his back was the only thing that kept Zack from running from the room. It really was a stupid idea, why would any of them want to go to college? He should’ve just kept his mouth shut. Matt had been willing to drop the issue that morning.
Matt’s warm lips pressed against the nape of his neck and he realized how tense he was. He tried to shake himself to loosen his tight muscles but he stayed edgy.
“Zack what’s wrong?” Jimmy asked. Zack chewed his snakebites and ducked his head so his ever present shield of dark hair could hide him from their probing eyes. Johnny rolled out of Jimmy’s loose hug and slid over to Zack and gently rubbed his cheek across Zack’s head to comfort whatever was plaguing his playmate. Zack accepted the comfort but it did little to calm his nerves. Matt sighed and held him a little tighter. Zack relaxed a little more but his stomach continued to churn.
“Zachary you know we’re not going to bite.” Brian murmured gently lying down in front of him with his head pillowed on his forearms. Matt spoke something quietly in ancient Greek and Brian gave him a thoughtful look. Johnny huffed and lay down next to Brian, “What’d you say?” he asked quietly, Zack could hear the annoyance in his voice. Brian and Matt ignored the question and Zack sighed and snuggled a little closer to Matt, “I had a thought the other day,” he started slowly, “I kind of…I do…” he stopped again and Matt’s lips pressed against his neck reassuringly, “Iwanttogotocollege.” He said quickly. Johnny stared at him for a second as the words sorted themselves out in his mind then his eyes brightened, “Can we?” he looked at Matt excitedly practically quivering with anticipation. Matt’s rough laugh eased the tension from Zack’s body, “Yes.”
Jimmy rolled over onto his stomach and looked at Zack with interest, “What made you think of that?” he asked quietly. Zack shrugged, “I have no idea.” And he really didn’t. The thought had popped up in his brain without any provocation and it had stayed there teasing him for a week until he finally told Matt that morning. Johnny pushed himself up and pressed his forehead against Zack’s neck before growling playfully. Zack growled back and slipped out of Matt’s protective embrace and started wrestling with Johnny on the floor.
Brian watched them for a moment and rolled his eyes, “Puppies.” He snorted. Matt laughed and swiftly pinned his old friend to the floor and gently bit his shoulder. Brian growled in annoyance and pushed Matt off and then pounced on him. Jimmy laughed, “What was it you said about puppies?” he rolled out of the way when Brian reached to smack him on the back. Without warning Zack and Johnny pounced on him growling and biting playfully. Jimmy groaned and let himself be mauled by the hyperactive pups.
The sun was almost done with its daily pilgrimage across the sky moving closer and closer to the western horizon. Johnny was sprawled out fully atop Jimmy sleeping peacefully with his arms around his Mate’s neck and his head buried in his chest. Jimmy held Johnny’s hips in a loose embrace with his cheek resting on the smaller man’s tattooed arms also contently sleeping. Zack was cuddled against Matt’s side with his head on his chest listening to his strong and steady heartbeat and starting to drift into a doze. Matt ran his fingers up and down his neck soothingly. Ever the loyal sentinel Brian was lying on his stomach closer to the door watching the other four, “So when do you want to put this plan of your into action?” he asked quietly. Jimmy stirred a little with the soft sound but quickly settled again. Zack roused himself from his near sleeping state and looked at the older wolf, “I dunno. I don’t even know what colleges are around here.” He replied.
“That’s what the internet is for.” Matt said sleepily. Zack swatted his stomach and snuggled into a more comfortable position.
“How do you plan on enrolling? With the grades we fabricated for our high school career I don’t think any college will touch us.” Jimmy said without opening his eyes. Zack sighed, “This is why I didn’t tell anyone.” He mumbled crankily. Matt’s arm tightened around him. Brian snorted quietly, “Are you kidding? What college doesn’t want that kind of promotion? People would be applying there just so they could say they were on campus with us. With the right amount of cash we could probably get into Harvard.”
“Maybe for private schools, but public schools get funding based on their cumulative GPA. Who wants to risk losing funding for a little publicity?” Jimmy countered easily.
“We’re not that stupid and the five of us aren’t going to drop their scores.” Brian huffed.
Zack let them argue for the time being. He could talk more with Matt when they had some time alone.
Zack woke up sometime later with bright shafts of moonlight falling across his back. He looked over to his pack mates and found them already gone, Brian was probably hunting and Jimmy and Johnny were probably curled up at the beach watching the water come in. He stood up and stretched and Matt’s eyes fluttered open, “Still think it’s a stupid idea?” he murmured. Zack wrinkled his nose, “I think it’ll be bigger headache than it’s worth.” He said easily. Matt sat up and gracefully got to his feet smiling, “Let’s talk over dinner.”
They ran silently through the streets, Matt a silver shadow and Zack a ghost by his side. They trotted into a local park and split up to find their separate meals. Zack nosed around a bush where the scent of rabbit was strong. He scratched at the dirt and found the entrance to the burrow. Leaves rustled on the other side of the bush and Zack quickly took off after the tricky rodent. He caught the sleek ball of fur and trotted over to his favorite tree to wait for Matt.
He settled into a well worn bed of pine needles and sighed heavily. He enjoyed having an actual house for once but he missed roaming the nights with his pack as they searched for big game. He looked out through the low hanging branches at the bright streetlights and the occasional passing car; he liked the current stage of his life but sometimes it was too constricting.
Great Plains 1836
Lush grasses waved in the wind, rippling like the gentle swells of the ocean. A few scraggly trees pushed up from the mostly flat landscape. Their skinny branches were thick with leaves and alive with small birds.
Zack sat on a large boulder and gazed across the horizon at the massive herd of buffalo. Johnny hopped up on the rock next to him and settled on his haunches panting with excitement. Zack lifted his lips in a grin and woofed quietly, the little wolf thumped his tail happily as they watched the small band of humans creep up on the dangerous animals.
Watching the humans hunt was always amusing, one of the funniest things he had seen to date actually; they crept close and then let out a whooping yell and started throwing their spears. He never understood why they yelled when it would be so much easier to throw the spear at one of the unsuspecting animals. Still, the resulting stampede was always a magnificent sight, not to mention sound. The sound of a thousand thundering hooves seemed to make the whole ground shake and the air tremble. He had seen some impressive creatures and heard about many more from Brian and Matt but the buffalo were amazing.
Zack counted down from ten in his head and right on cue the first warrior jumped up and bellowed and let his spear fly. The others followed quickly after him and the spooked creatures turned and began running away from the hunters. The air trembled with their bellows and snorts and dust quickly swirled into a dense fog around the running heard.
The buffalo the first warrior wounded was quickly brought down with more spears and arrows. The humans did their odd little ritual before they began to clean the fallen animal. Their jubilant voices carried over the plains on the wind as the thundering of hooves faded.
Night on the plains was one of Zack’s favorite times. Above the sky was alive with stars so thick they lit the ground with a soft light. The pregnant moon was the fiery sun’s cooler counterpart and wrapped the world in her cloak of silver. The pack slunk through the razor grasses toward a small pocket of buffalo. Zack’s keen nose had picked out an animal suffering from sickness.
Matt’s sharp ears pricked forward and gave the silent signal for the pack to fan out. Zack looked the buffalo over and scented the air and found where the injured buffalo was grazing. He knew the pack was watching him, waiting for the signal to attack, and when the wind picked up and blew the grasses violently he gave them the go ahead.
James was silent as a ghost when he sprang from the grass, Matt and Brian streaked toward the pack as sleek shadows, and Johnny and Zack circled wide to cover the flanks and herd the buffalo where they wanted them.
The sleepy animals spooked and ran bellowing in fear, the healthy animals covered ground quickly and soon the elderly cows and the young injured bull fell behind the herd. Zack and Johnny closed their ranks cutting off the slower animals from the healthy herd. James was easily gaining on the injured bull they wanted; ever a force of nature the bull whipped around and brought its horns to bear. James nimbly leaped to the side and Brian’s dark form jumped and slashed at the bull’s hide with his razor sharp teeth. The bull bellowed a challenge and spun around to attack Brian. Matt snapped at a back leg; a dangerous maneuver. If the bull decided to kick the sharp hooves could easily crush his skull. Zack barked at his mate angrily for trying the dangerous tactic and the black wolf flicked his ears back in apology.
The bull charged at Johnny who was taunting him with sharp bites on his muzzle and loud yips. The little wolf darted out of the way and as he steamed past grabbed his tail. The bull roared and bucked, missing Johnny by inches. Sufficiently warned the small wolf backed off.
Matt howled shortly and the pack reorganized. Brian and Zack circled to opposite sides of the tiring bull and as one jumped at the beast’s vulnerable back. James waited a second and then darted forward low in the grass and when the bull raised its head to turn his powerful jaws clamped down on the exposed neck.
The pack sat panting next to the carcass; Johnny was thoroughly yelled at by his mate and Zack for the risky tail pull. Zack sharply nipped his shoulder and growled. The little wolf’s ears laid back and he rolled part way onto his back in apology. James merely raised one of his massive paws and smacked him sharply on the nose. Matt lifted his lips in a smile until Zack glared at him. The black wolf laid his ears back again and then flicked them forward in annoyance. Zack nuzzled his neck and licked the top of his head and his mate’s annoyance faded.
Present Day
Matt wiggled under the low hanging branches with a squirrel dangling from his jaws. Zack shook himself out of the memory and sighed again. Matt gave him a concerned look and dropped the squirrel and licked his muzzle affectionately. Zack thumped his tail and started in on his dinner.
They finished their snack and shifted. The cool night air slid over Zack’s exposed skin like a gentle caress. Matt wrapped an arm around his shoulders and kissed his temple, “What’s wrong angel?” he murmured. Zack snuggled closer to his warm body, “I was just thinking, remembering. Sometimes I get claustrophobic living like this.” He sighed. Matt added his other arm to the embrace and nuzzled his cheek, “I know love.” He said gently, “Sometimes memory can be more painful than comforting.” He looked out at the streetlight and road and Zack wondered what things he saw.
It was hard to fathom just how old Matt was. When he spoke of the Roman glory days, the rise of Christianity, seeing the Parthenon in its prime and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius like everything had just happened last week it was almost intimidating. When he and Brian could discuss the first time they had seen the Mona Lisa, or the unveiling of Michelangelo’s David as if it was nothing it made his head spin. He had looked up dates for some of the things Matt had told him about, so many of them were before the first century he had stopped looking. He knew he was old; anything over eighty seemed to be old by regular human standards, but compared to Matt and Brian he really was still a puppy. Six hundred years was little more than a finger snap in their lifetimes.
“How do you want to go about doing this college thing?” Matt asked after a moment. Zack chewed one of his piercings as he thought, “Jimmy said no college would want us,” He said hesitantly, “but Brian made a good point with the publicity. I think we would have to find someplace more lenient with grading and that desperately needs some attention.” He looked at Matt for an idea. The black and silver wolf chuckled, “Basically any school labeled a Party School.”
A smile twitched Zack’s lips, “I guess so. So where do we go? And how do we enroll? Would they still take our high school grades?” the smile left and a frown creased his brow as he thought more and more about the details.
“We’ll have to apply as non-traditional students I think. That means we’ll have to take a test and they’ll use those scores in place of our high school grades, I think; unless they’ve changed things.” Matt said easily. Zack actually felt a small tremor of excitement go through him, “So as long as we keep the scores kinda low there’s a chance we can get in.” His stupid little idea didn’t really seem so impossible anymore. He saw Matt’s lips lifted in a smile and he scowled at him, “You had this figured out as soon as I told you didn’t you?” he accused. Matt kissed him lightly on the corner of the mouth, “I thought you would be more excited about the idea if you figured it out by yourself.” He murmured. Zack couldn’t hold onto his annoyance, he was right.
“Then we’ve got a busy day tomorrow.” Matt said, “Time to go home.” And with that he let go of Zack and shifted. Zack followed him happily and playfully nipped at his flank and darted off in a random direction. Matt woofed lowly and took off after him, they would get home eventually.
Zack was the first up the next day and after making a small pot of coffee booted up his computer and began searching for colleges and looking at their enrollment requirements. The excitement he had felt the night before slowly grew in its potency as he looked over the requirements for non-traditional students. They could do this. All they had to do was sign up for the S.A.T. and get a decent grade, write an essay for why they want to go to college and send it in with a check. Done deal.
Matt came downstairs and slid into a chair beside him and watched his screen for a moment in silence. Zack leaned over and kissed his temple, “I found a couple of good places,” he said flipping back through the many tabs he had at the top of the screen, “Maximillian; they’re mostly for natural resource management so they’ve got a lot of forested acres they do studies in. All we have to do is take the test and write a four page essay on why we want to go there.” He flipped to another tab, “Red Rock; they’re in the middle of the desert it seems like, they’re a business college. I don’t really like this one though, it’s a small campus and we’ve gotta write a five page essay, take the test, and get a letter of recommendation from an employer.” He stared at the homepage for a moment and then deleted the tab. Matt stayed quiet next to him.
“This is Gable Woods; I like this one the best. They’ve got a pretty big campus, about twenty-two thousand, and they’re literally in the middle of a corn field. They’ve got a couple forested acres close to campus for their natural resource people and the only traffic is school traffic. The campus has a lot of green in it too, it’s not just buildings.” He pulled up a map and pointed at the large splotches of green surrounding most of the buildings. “And,” he said with a playful smile, “They just redid their gym so you’ll have someplace to go to show off your muscles.” He giggled and Matt snorted.
