The wind rattled the windows and on some gusts actually made the little cabin shudder. The cabin was a sturdy little house; the supporting timbers were a foot thick and solidly wedged into the ribbing of the ceiling. It was only two rooms, the living room was the biggest, the kitchen was only a little bigger than a closet, but they had been coming to Big Bear almost every year since they got their licenses. They were used to the violent weather so didn’t pay attention to the wind’s hissy fit. Well, most of them weren’t. Johnny sat next to the window on an over stuffed couch under a navy blue fleece blanket and watched the wind toss cotton ball sized snowflakes to and fro. The window was already etched with frost; the beautiful designs gave the entire outer landscape a surreal quality. He held his steaming mug of hot chocolate and brandy a little tighter glad to be inside.
Jimmy sat next to him almost asleep, his head resting on his thigh whilst the rest of his lanky form was stretched out on the remainder of the couch. He was laughing as Zack and Brian pestered each other. The two were sitting on the couch across from them tickling each other. Brian had one of Zack’s feet in a headlock and was tickling him mercilessly. Zack was laughing so hard tears leaked from the corner of his eyes and he twisted every way he could trying to get his foot away from his friend.
They had made a fire earlier in the day when the storm had first moved in since the cabin didn’t have central heating or lights and the flames still burned and crackled brightly. The room was illuminated in a soft, flickering golden light; the corners were taken by shadows. The stacks of wood against the wall in the shadows were still high so they wouldn’t need to brave the howling wind any time soon.
The hearth reminded him of a Cracker Barrel fireplace. It and the wood box took up and entire wall. There was a small ledge in front of the fire place made of flagstone that was wonderful for sitting on and warming your back. The flagstones continued out from the ledge another four feet and were worn smooth.
Matt was curled up in his own burgundy blanket almost asleep on the smooth flagstones in front of the red-orange flames. Johnny hadn’t seen him open his eyes in about ten minutes but his lips twitched into a smile every time Zack squealed for mercy. Johnny guessed he would be sound asleep in another ten minutes, maybe. Jimmy shifted and his head grew a little heavier, Johnny lightly rested a hand on his head; he didn’t stir. He could feel his own eyes growing heavy and even Brian and Zack were starting to wind down.
Brian let go of Zack’s foot and the guitarist rolled onto the floor still giggling. Brian laughed and stretched out on the couch with a yawn. Zack hopped to his feet and pushed Brian’s legs aside and climbed back into his spot. He grabbed a forest green fleece blanket off the floor and covered both their legs. Zack was still racked with fits of giggled every now and then which set Brian off. Johnny snickered and put his half full mug on the small table beside him and carefully moved around, trying not to wake Jimmy, to a more comfortable position. Jimmy sat up a little and looked around but lay down again in a few seconds and quickly fell back asleep.
Johnny was snuggled between the back of the couch and Jimmy’s warm body, the drummer’s head was now resting lightly against his chest. He yawned and wiggled around a little more to get comfortable and in his new position sleep pounced on him and he was asleep in minutes.
He woke up sometime in the night shivering. Jimmy’s body was no longer pressed against his. He sat up and found the drummer, as well as Brian, curled next to Matt in front of the fire. The flames had died down a fair amount and cold was stealing into the cabin. He grumbled and got up and joined his band mates. Matt woke up a little when he curled up in front of him but was quickly asleep again when he settled.
Johnny woke up later that morning, the wind was finally silent and sunlight filtered through the frost etched glass making crazy designs on the floor. Someone’s warm breath whispered across his neck and he looked over his shoulder and saw Zack’s black and purple hair. There was a dim memory of the guitarist cuddling against him in the night but the memory was mixed with a dream so he dismissed it and curled up more in his warm blanket.
He woke up again like he had in the night, shivering; Zack’s warm body was no longer pressed against his back. He groaned quietly and sat up and scratched his head and realized he was the only one still in front of the fireplace. He could hear Matt’s low voice coming from the kitchen and decided some hot chocolate was the best way to start the day.
He woke up more as he walked to the kitchen and woke up all the way when he saw his four band mates crowded into the tiny room, “What are you doin’?” he giggled. Jimmy pulled him into the kitchen with them and then got him in a head lock and gave him a noogie. The little bassist cursed at him and tried to bite his arm while everyone else laughed.
Jimmy decided to let him go after a minute and Johnny punched him in the arm and then ran out of the kitchen. He did a couple circuits around the living room until Jimmy stopped and glared at him. Johnny stuck his tongue out at him and the game started over. He ran past the kitchen twice and on the third pass Matt reached out and easily caught him, “I say we throw ‘em outside for ten minutes.” He said to Jimmy. The drummer laughed and Johnny squeaked and got a death grip on Matt’s arm. He wasn’t going out in the cold alone.
Jimmy opened the door and was confronted with four feet of glistening fluff. Matt put Johnny down and he scrambled over to Jimmy’s side to look at the snow. The massive pine trees that surrounded the house were heavy with snow, their limbs were without any green, ice crystals glittered in the sun; they nature’s priceless gems. The snow drifts were gold, blue, and red with the sun’s rays. The chilled wind gently blew and Johnny stepped closer to Jimmy. The drummer was leaning against one side of the door frame and Matt against the other. Zack stood in the middle; Brian was behind Jimmy, his chin resting on his friend’s shoulder.
A cardinal darted out of one of the gemstone trees and landed lightly on the ice crusted snow. His red plumage looked like spilled wine on the pristine white. The sun was a little higher in the sky and the bird’s shadow flared out, the snow reflected orange and red and the shadow became its own entity. A phoenix rising from its frigid prison beneath the snow; the bird spread its wings and took off taking the small phoenix with it.
“That was cool.” Zack whispered.
“Merry Christmas guys.” Brian said softly, Jimmy reached up and held his head close to his for a second. They stepped back after a moment when the air became too cold and Jimmy shut the door. Matt walked over to the fireplace and built the fire up again.
Jimmy went over to the fireplace too and grabbed the blanket Johnny had been using and sprawled out on his stomach. Brian lay down with his head resting on his friend’s shoulders. Matt grabbed his red blanket and settled his head on the drummer’s mid back. Johnny grabbed Zack and Brian’s blue blanket and curled up with his head on Matt’s chest. Zack pulled two more blankets out of one of their suitcases and covered Brian with one. The guitarist mumbled a sleepy thank you and drifted off again. Zack rested his head a little below Johnny’s on Matt’s stomach.
The flames from the growing fire leapt up the chimney like wings from and red-orange phoenix. Matt’s heart was strong in his ear and in a few minutes the room was warm again and they were asleep.
A/N: Merry Christmas!
