Book One: One Thousand and One Nights
Chapter 2: Worlds Apart
Tsu-ne was already stowed away in the mechanical carriage. One look from Mya-vi had settled the exuberant youngster's spirits. Mya-vi knew what it felt like – the excitement of going to that sacred place – Central Ground-T. After all, all provincials had been fed, at an early age, stories of the decadent, high-tech living revived from the ruins of the once great city of Tokyo. Entering past the thick walls and the heavily protected gates, Mya-vi had felt as though he had stepped into Paradise. Into a dream.
A dream...
Lord Mya-vi – now many years older – shook his head. The enthusiasm of a fifteen-year-old had given way easily to the hard reality of Ground-T. Watching less careful friends fall victim to the drugs, diseases of the bordellos and violence which spawned from the dark, lower levels of the capital. Underneath the wide streets of Ground-T, after all, were the shards of a forgotten era – adn there on the Dark Road, ancient treasures – and equally ancient fiends were hidden. Only the desperate lived in the trash of Below – and only the foolhardy disturbed the shadows which lay there.
Tsu-ne is so young. Mya-vi bit his lip. But – at least Hiiro-ki will keep him out of trouble.... What with Hiiro-ki's past – I'm sure he's got HIS head screwed on straight.
Slowly walking around the carriage, he double checked the luggage bound tightly with irons to the back. The glass of the windows were shatterproof. - a precious find from the Black Market – and even a few sensors and miniature cannonades had been added for extra protection. This was no ordinary journey, after all.
Lord Mya-vi gave the guard and his two coachmen – one of them Hiiro-ki – a tight grin.
“Let's get this show on the road, boys,” he raised a fist.
“Hiya!” They shouted boisterously in return. “May His eyes be on you!”
“And also on you.” Mya-vi finished the age old blessing.
The carriage door eased open smoothly, somewhere air hissed. Foot on the step, Lord Mya-vi turned to look back. The whole town had come to watch – their faces solemn, bearing flowers wishing good fortune. Camomile. Celandine. Red Columbine and Coronella. Sweet Pea and Pink... Tsu-ne had pointed them out, as he slipped a couple into his bonnet. It was understandable that the townsfolk were concerned. Steward Iiszu-me was a good man and, in Lord Mya-vi's mind, stood above the rest of the country's Stewards. Not only was he intelligent when it came to managing estates and Old Technology... But the people trusted him with their interests. He spoke for the people.
Still, to the people, Iiszu-me was not Lord Mya-vi.
So there was excitement on the behalf of Tsu-ne. This was going to be his moment to shine in the paradise of Ground-T. Maybe even... before the Emperor!
But there was also consternation. Rumor had it that the Blessing Way was no longer as safe as it had been. Only very important buisness men ventured onto the roads.
“May His Eyes be on you,” the priest intoned, clutching his blue prayer beads.
“And also on you,” Lord Mya-vi winked.
The crowds smiled and nodded.
He clambered in, the door closing behind him soundlessly. The locks clicking down with a firm “CLACK”. Turning to wave at his people, Mya-vi's throat tightened as the people's faces shrank into the distance – and then – another small group at the border, who tended the Main Gates.
They too waved as the carriage passed by. Tsu-ne blew kisses. Mya-vi watched the gates shut behind them and bit his lip.
This was it.
“Next stop, Grand-T!” Tsu-ne chirped happily, opening his compact mirror to check his makeup.
“Tsu-ne...”
“What?” Tsu-ne pouted. “Just cause I'm not spreading doom and gloom...”
“This is SERIOUS!” Mya-vi sighed. “See all this land... it should be ours. But it isn't. Unclaimable. Huanted. Kami knows what else is out there...”
Tsu-ne peered out of the glass indifferently.
“Blah blah blah... this is ours....”
“Hm. It was part of Kuroka a long time ago – but now...” Mya-vi shrugged. “Lost – recovered – lost again. You know, Tsu-ne. We are luckier than most. At least we have fifty percent of our province.”
Tsu-ne lolled against his seat and glared at the velvet behind his lecturing brother's head.
How many times have I heard this?
“The Fence...” He droned.
“Yes. It's so important to...”
“I've never seen beyond it. How would I know?”
“Use your eyes, idiot,” Mya-vi glared at his younger brother, who was now checking his nail polish.
“It didn't look any different to me. Just like our side – but uncultivated.”
“Uncultivated...”
Mya-vi shivered.
“Geez. You're like an old man -”
Mya-vi kicked his brother in the shins.
“Take that back!”
“Seriously!” Tsu-ne giggled. “Fretting and praying like a superstitious grandpa over a three hour ride!”
“Not funny,” deadpanned Mya-vi.
His face cracked up and he jumped forward – grabbing his brother's cheeks.
“Mind the ruffles!” howled Tsu-ne with mock horror, as he beat his older sibling off.
The carriage careened down the road.
-
The thunder of hoofs on the grey pavement lessened as the six horses and the carriage drew up before the large gate outpost on the border of Ground-T.
“This is... how big the city is?” Tsu-ne eyed the walls which seemed to touch the perpetually cloudy
sky.
“No, this is merely the border of what they have managed to reclaim...” Mya-vi murmured leaning close to the glass as well. “A long time ago, this was a border greatly disputed. They attempted to push back further – each time, the operations were unsuccessful. And cost many lives... That is why the walls are so important. A feeble attempt to keep the darkness out. Feeble – but still an attempt. Ah! Here they come- back, Tsu-ne!”
Pressing a button, Lord Mya-vi's window rolled down, revealing two gruff guards, who's faces were a mixture of disbelief and disgruntlement. Tsu-ne stared at the stark grey costumes of the men – and the bizarre pieces of equipment hanging from goggles and ear plugs and hand held Turin Machines.
“Good day to you all,” One guard nodded. “The Good Lord has kept you safe and brought you to us in good health, I presume.”
“And He has protected the Kingdom from Chaos.”
“Amen!” all the men intoned.
Tsu-ne rolled his eyes.
“You have traveled far, stranger? May I see your pass cards?”
Opening his wallet carefully, Lord Mya-vi handed five white cards with curious black stripes to the guards.
Tsu-ne leaned forward with curiousity as the second guard ran the first card through his Turin Machine.
“Hmmm.... Koya-Sha. Guard of the Third Class. Confirmed.”
The card was handed back and stored away with great cared.
“Nihon-Gi. Coachman of the Third Class. Confirmed.”
A pause.
“And... Hiiro-ki. Mage Tutor of the Second Class.” The guard lifted an eyebrow. “Yet – a coachman?”
Hiiro-ki shrugged and grinned ruefully.
“Drop out.”
Tsu-ne blinked.
Mage Tutor... He was studying for the Priesthood?
He giggled.
Drop out indeed.
The guards grunted.
“Next... errr... Lord Tsu-ne, Master of Kuroka, First Class....” The guard shifted his eyes away from Tsune's kohl lined one. “And... finally... you sir.... oh! His Lordship, the Earl of Kuroka, Mya-vi. I beg pardon, Your Lordship, for the hold up.”
“It's no problem,” Mya-vi winked cheerfully. “This is all for the protection of the people. It's a relief to know that the people are safe because of your constant efforts.” He pressed some money into the man's hand and nodded.
“Well... then...” The guard smiled cautiously. “We'll send you on your way. May the Good Lord keep a watchful eye on you.”
“Also on you,” Mya-vi returned with a disarming smile and the window rolled up.
Watching the men disappear inside, Mya-vi leaned back.
“It's done. We're here.” He smiled.
Tsu-ne nodded mutely, pressing against the window pane to watch the giant doors slowly open – bit by bit – until enough space had been made for their carriage. Lord Mya-vi tapped the ceiling of the coach and the horses started again. Slowly picking their way down the worn pavement, past the thick doors and wall, into Paradise.
-
Tsu-ne was speechless. There was nothing to say, really. All he could do was crane his neck this way and that. Watching in a daze, trying to take in the sights. And the sights were mind boggling to the young man. He had done his schooling. He had heard of Old Technology... but...
The Light. Neon, flaring, multicolored, blinking, on-off-on-off-on-off... Running in circles, going by overhead on the fronts of carriages strung together.
The Above-Ground SubLine. And sometimes, for the very rich, the rarest thing ever – hovercraft. Cobbled together with piping and metals and garishly painted, the small flying machines hovered around buildings carrying things for the wealthy.
Down the street as they passed by, he saw large pieces of glass stretching for miles into the sky, full of people inside, he was sure. Multi-storied buildings.
Cityscape.
It was overwhelming. The colors of the people and the amount. Pressed hard against each other. Bumping each other. Walking, running, laughing, crying, shouting... There were a couple who had blank faces... metal blank faces...
Oh. Robots!
And others with missing limbs sitting on the road sides begging for money. A business man was badgering a young girl... And somewhere a siren was wailing. A fire, perhaps, or a shooting? Tsu-ne craned his neck as they left the carriage and got into a waiting hovercraft. As they rose to the upper levels of the multi-tiered city, where the rich and affluent lived, his eyes grew wider as they took in large desolate city-scape that they had just passed through. It surrounded the stacks of buildings in the center of the city - like a wasteland, dark and unlit - and looming. A reminder of the darkness outside the surrounding wall.
It wasn't lovely, really. Tsu-ne thought, as he watched the city at night from his new bedroom balcony. The air... smells funny... and the sky... is... so dark....
He held his hand up in front of his face.
At home, at night, it was pitch dark at night – but here, even though there are these lights and all these people... it seems... like a lonely place. You might get lost here... and then... forgotten forever...
“Does Lord Tsu-ne like it?” Hiiro-ki's voice startled the young man out of his musings.
“Oh! Hiiro-ki! You startled me!”
“I'm sorry... I didn't mean...”
“Don't say sorry for that, idiot,” laughed Tsu-ne affectionately. “But,” he waggled his finger at his companion. “You have to say sorry for calling me Lord. I ordered you to stop a long time ago!”
“I'm sorry.”
“Okay... C'mon... look out with me. It's fun.” Tsu-ne smiled. “It's exciting to see something so big. Just waiting to be explored. Hey... promise you'll go with me tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow?”
“Yes. Brother is going to be gone no doubt – to find his Seat. Maybe talk to the Emperor about Technology and... funding... Boring stuff. I want to go shopping!”
Tsu-ne tugged his friend closer.
“I need someone to carry my bags.”
“Well... since you commanded me...” Hiiro-ki's lips quirked up in a grin. “How can I say no?”
“You can never say no to me.”
“No. No, I can't...”
Together they stood and looked at the loneliness – and felt comfort.
-
The next week was spent in a whirlwind of activity on Tsu-ne's part. For some reason, the young man seemed to think things would be gone so quickly. That if not grabbed on the spot, opportunities for shopping and eating would disappear.
Mya-vi shook his head.
Typical newbie eagerness... but it'll disappear soon. Surely...
Then he shrugged.
Everyone comes to a conclusion in their own time. Tsu-ne needs to walk his own path. He's strong that way. He will learn the price of individuality – and the prices of conformity... And he's got Hiiro-ki with him...
Turning back to Iishi-ii and Ki-sa's heated debate on whether rose wine was better or white, Mya-vi couldn't help but shake his head in wonder. Ground-T was still the same. A mass of confusions and paradoxes... Differences and similarities...
It's so hard to believe that here I am... in a place so different from Kuroka... it's like a different universe...
“So we were thinking,” Iishi-ii repeated firmly, snagging Mya-vi's wandering interest. “Names of the Roses.”
“Eh?” Mya-vi leaned forward.
“You've been everywhere this week...” Ki-sa nodded. “Everywhere. Shopping. Feasting... All those ball invitations just for the sake of seeing you wedded... And I even heard you had an audience with the Emperor three days ago! A feat! But then, it's so rare to see anybody these days...”
“Rare?” Mya-vi asked, raising an eyebrow. “The roads have gotten that bad?”
“N-n-n-nooo... One can't say that, of course,” Iishi-ii shook his head. “That's not what it is. No. Things are FINE... it's just... very rare...”
Denial?
“... Okay...” Mya-vi decided to let it go. “So... it's rare. But you know, you have to go back home, don't you?”
Iishi-ii and Ki-sa looked at each other. Then shook their heads.
“There's no going back, really,” Ki-sa sighed. “Once you're here – in such a safe place... who would want to leave? I've been here since I was fourteen. Never left... And Iishi-ii...”
“I came round when I was twenty. Never left. Why should I? Back home... it was pigsties and wheatfields...”
“Oh...” Mya-vi blinked. “But... you aren't... heirs... are you?”
“Sure. But when that time comes, that time comes...” Iishi-ii shrugged.
So careless...
“I've been studying hard,” Ki-sa nodded. “When the time comes, I will go. But for now... this is my home away from home. How long do you intend to stay?”
“I don't know...” Mya-vi bit his lip. “Not too long, I hope. My people need me.”
“I dunno if it'll be there when you get back,” Iishi-ii lit a cigarette and blew out a thin cloud of smoke pensively. “Lots of provinces are no longer in communication with us... It makes you wonder... A revolt maybe? But that's stupid... because what we have now is the best really...”
“Revolt?” Mya-vi stared. “Since when?”
“Don't listen to Iishi-ii,” Ki-sa waved a hand. “Provinces have... stopped communicating with Central... And messengers don't seem to reach them... So the question is... Revolt? Or – is the Chaos moving again...”
“Chaos Schmaos...” Iishi-ii huffed.
“Chaos....” Mya-vi breathed. “Dark creatures of the night on the Way... you mean?”
“Not happening,” interjected Iishi-ii.
“Maybe,” Ki-sa leaned back and sipped his rose wine. “Who knows? You wanna find out? Get yourself a guide and get yourself killed.”
“Or a Hunter,” Iishi-ii grinned. “Those guys kick ass...”
Mya-vi filed the name away for further research. That sounded... interesting...
“So... Names of the Roses...” Mya-vi prompted.
“The best. Bordello. In Town.”
Ki-sa nodded.
“Bordello?”
“Yeah. You know. A brothel. A harem. With your name on it – if you have the money.” Iishi-ii grinned.
“I know what those terms are,” Mya-vi rolled his eyes. “But why this one?”
“It's the best!” Mya-vi's two companions chorused.
“No word of a lie,” Ki-sa stated. “Gospel truth. Cross my heart and swear to die...”
Iishi-ii nodded. “There's so much..... variety....” He cocked his head inquiringly.
Mya-vi blushed.
“In other words,” Ki-sa said matter of factly. “It's not just for the straight... Any kink is supplied.”
“Okay. Okay. Let's... go to this... er...”
“Names of the Roses.”
“That.”
Ki-sa stood up and found his way to the apartment door.
“Hurry up, boys,” he called. “We've got to get us some pretty ladies!”
-
Entering Names of the Roses, trying to take in the rich tapestry, soft wall-to-wall rugs and the dim lighting – with exotic looking lamps, Mya-vi felt like a little boy again. Like Tsu-ne entering the city, Mya-vi couldn't stop gaping at the wonderful food brought to them in small bowls on a low table.
Another world, he thought dazedly. A world in a world...
He automatically drank the green tea offered him and watched with apprehension as his friends downed small bottles of the water wine. Another ancient drink. Sake....
It was amazing.
Smiling uncertainly at the thoughtful courtesan pouring him a glass of the alcohol, Mya-vi wondered where this place had been during his last visit.
“Thank you,” he nodded. Finding a spare cup on the table, he offered a small glass to the pretty courtesan. It gave him a chance to lean closer – to smell the alluring fragrance on the pale neck... and check to see if that blonde hair was for real.
It was...
Truly exotic... Blonde hair is so rare these days...
After sipping the glass, the short courtesan disappeared only to be replaced at his side by something even more gorgeous. Gorgeous and dangerous.
Scratch gorgeous, he thought deliriously. It is the face of an angel.
Smiling into the light blue eyes, he raised a hand to tuck the long black hair back, enjoying the feel of smooth skin, carefully tended night after night by oils and fragrances. The ears were just as beautiful – small and warm in his hand. He blushed.
“My Lord comes from a far province,” the courtesan asked softly.
Mya-vi froze and then set his glass down thoughtfully.
The voice... was low, honeyed... and...
Undoubtedly male.
Watching Iishi-ii stumble off with two young “girls” – and Ki-sa roll away with another, Mya-vi couldn't help but sigh.
“Yeah... a different world from this... It's like... another universe...” He laughed at himself. “But I guess, when people come here, it's also to go to another world, huh.”
“Another world,” the courtesan smiled.
Mya-vi poured the beauty a small cup of sake and refilled his own.
“That's a good way to put it... I myself wonder about that... It's a shame really that the dream has to end so quickly...”
“Who says it's a dream?” breathed Mya-vi. Leaning forward and nibbling along the pale neck and then carefully finding the soft open lips, which tasted of strawberries and roses. “And who says it's gonna end?”
“My apologies...”
“No need to say sorry... in fact, no need to say anything...” Mya-vi said incoherently between kisses.
Their tongues flicked in and then out in some sort of mating dance. Or maybe it was battle between strength and wits... or maybe it was nothing but the heat of a moment. Somehow, he managed to find his way to his feet, his hands firmly gripping the ivory shoulders which emerged from the revealing kimono. Edging back, he found a small room off onto the side.
“Bed,” he gasped – and then kissed along the jaw of the courtesan.
It seemed like an age – but in reality, it was only fifteen minutes later that they were both half-naked and lying on the bed. Mya-vi leaned down and kissed down the neck to the hollow at the collar bone and further down – to suck and playfully bite an already hardened nipple.
“Let me...” gasped the courtesan, bending back with the agony of excitement.
Already Mya-vi could feel the a response... It made him laugh as he ground down, their hips grinding together brought even more heat to his groin. It was a heady feeling – and as the courtesan returned the favors, Mya-vi knew that he had found something...
And the courtesan...
The courtesan...
“What's your name?” he asked, rolling over the man and taking top position again.
“Name?”
A pause and then the dark head turned away.
“Does it matter?”
Mya-vi thought about it for a moment.
It's a shame really that the dream has to end so quickly...
“Yeah...” He murmured to himself. “It does... For you and for me...”
Another silence.
“Then... you can call me whatever...”
“No,” Mya-vi groaned, his fingers already undoing the heavy sashes of the kimono. “Your real name... Allow me the pleasure of screaming it...” He winked at Asagi, as the sashes fell apart and the kimono shifted open. He lowered his lips to the half-erection.
“It's...” The dark-haired angel bit his lip, trying to stifle a groan of pleasure as Mya-vi's tongue and mouth found their way around his balls and then surrounded his groin with warmth. “A-A-Asa-gii...”
“Asa-gii.”
“Y-ye-yes...”
“The name's Mya-vi. Remember it!”
-
Asa-gii woke up in the morning. Not alone. Not stiff. Not even aching like he normally did. He lay there – in the warmth of two arms which surrounded him. He turned suddenly – and found himself face to face with a dopey grin on Lord Mya-vi's face.
“Hello, beautiful.” Mya-vi grinned.
No. He thought, for once in his long life, unsure of what to think. Not alone...
