Part 2: Shuji’s revenge.
“If you don’t hurry up I’m going to leave without you no matter what father says!” he shouted up the stairs from where he waited at the door. Annoyance radiated from him, and he glowered at the two youngest boys who grinned and then ran off together to do mischief.
Suujii came down the stairs and slipped on her shoes, ignoring her brother’s glares and grumbled complaints. Just then their father came out from the kitchen. “Have a great time! Here,” he gave them each some money. “See you tonight. Shuji, watch over her. As her older brother it’s your responsibility to watch for her safety.”
She didn’t wait to hear his reply, but opened the door and stepped outside. She certainly was aware of his presence as they headed down towards the school where everyone was to meet. Suujii made no attempt at conversation. Her brother wasn’t glowing with family love so she figured it was best to just leave him to his brooding. She hadn’t really wanted to go with him and all his adoring little friends. If anything it would probably make her ill watching how they acted around him.
It was a long silent walk, but they finally arrived at the school and she saw the six couples, and the girl Shuji ate lunch with every day. Glancing around she didn’t see a male waiting alone. “Hey, Shuji, why’s your sister here? This is a couple’s day!”
“He bribed someone to be her date,” another said, and some laughed.
Suujii hid the hurt that comment created, and stiffened her spine. She would not cry in front of these teenagers! She glanced quickly at Shuji to find him watching her, and then she hurriedly looked away. She didn’t want him to see how much it had hurt her either. That’s when she saw someone biking up, and by the way he let the bike weave and by the sound of his laugh she knew who it was.
“You set up your sister with Kusano?” one of the girls laughed.
“Step-sister,” he corrected, moving forward. He’d seen the hurt in her eyes before she turned away, and it had made him feel uncomfortable. To ease that feeling he walked to the others, and put on his best act to hide his annoyance and irritation.
Akira was putting his bike away, locking it up, but Suujii overheard another teen’s comment. “Kusano must be desperate for a date so it shouldn’t have cost you too much to bribe him!”
She wasn’t sure if he’d heard any of the comments, but Akira came bounding over, and stopped beside her. She’d been watching him so she was startled when the glow in his eyes faded a little, and he tilted his head quizzically. “Why were you crying?” he asked.
The others had already started to walk off so none had heard his question. Suujii blinked and shook her head. “I wasn’t.” She smiled up at him. “Hello, Akira-kun. I guess I’m supposed to be your date.”
He flushed, and the glow returned to his eyes as he laughed. “Suujii-chan.”
“We’re going to leave without you,” Shuji shouted back to them.
They took a bus, Suujii made to sit with the girls while the boys all sat together for propriety’s sake. She endured the girlish giggles and whispered comments about the boys, and didn’t venture any comments as none asked any of her. They disembarked near the aquarium, and she gratefully let the others go ahead. When someone appeared at her side she looked over, and saw Akira’s profile. He was watching the others, not her, and yet she had the distinct sensation that he was more aware of her than of them.
“Suujii-chan,” he said in a singsong, and his head dropped back as he gave a silent laugh. Lifting one hand he pointed towards the aquarium, and lifted his head to gaze intently ahead. “Let’s go!”
Despite the horrid situation she couldn’t help but smile, and she nodded. “Let’s go!”
It was awing. Whole walls of glass that left a person feeling like they were just a step away from the wonderful and eerie underwater world. Suujii reached a tentative hand towards the glass as exotically bright fish darted past. “I feel like if I touch the glass I’ll fall through,” she whispered.
Akira’s gaze shifted from the fish to her profile. “What would you do if it happened?”
Her fingers hesitated a breath away from the glass. “As I fall in I’d reach back and pull you with me.”
“Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?” he laughed, falling back a step. Darting forward he caught her arm, and drew her hand away. “Don’t touch it! Don’t touch it!”
Others were staring at them as they laughed and hurried away. Up an incline they went, and the glass was an arc over them, small bright fish darting close and then away. Up they hurried, laughing, and admired other sea life. They ended the tour of the aquarium at a gift shop, going in to browse. The others were scattered about, some still below, and some gone out to the patio to sit and have a drink. She laughed when Akira lifted a stuffed shark toy off a shelf and made it lunge at her shoulder as if to bite it. There were stuffed toys, jewellery, and other paraphernalia.
As they left the gift shop they saw a photo booth. Suujii grabbed his arm, and dragged him to it, shoving him inside, and then following. She knew she was blushing, being so bold, but she wanted to remember the fun she’d had here with Akira. He didn’t seem to mind. He was already looking at the backgrounds offered, and they chose one that looked like an underwater world. Their first photos they made hilarious faces like they were drowning or were stunned to suddenly be under water. They then did the popular peace sign, and laughed.
The sky was blue with barely a cloud in sight when they found a table to sit at. Suujii sat, and lifted her face to the warm sun, shutting her eyes as she did so. “Ahhh, it feels so wonderful!”
Akira stood by the other seat, watching her for a moment, and then set a large bag on the chair. “I’ll go get us something to drink.”
“Suujii,” a girl spoke as three of them neared. “How’s your date with Kusano?”
Suujii frowned as they snickered and moved on. Bitches, she thought with irritation. Reaching in her pocket she pulled out the souvenirs she’d purchased. Two cell phone straps that had small colourful plastic fish at the end. So they could remember their trip to the aquarium. She was chewing on her bottom lip and wondering if she had the courage to give one to Akira when he returned and set a glass of iced tea before her.
“Thank you,” Suujii smiled, and watched as he sat. “Here,” she held out one of the fish straps, flushing as she did so. “I wanted to get something to remember our trip here.”
Akira hesitated, and then took the strap. A slight flush coloured his cheeks, and he held it up and watched the little plastic fish twirl. It was the first time a girl had ever given him anything to commemorate their time together. His blush intensified, and he jumped up, moving away a few paces and holding the fish up to stare at it. A girl had given him a gift! A girl had! He wanted to shout it to the world that a girl had given him a gift because she had enjoyed their time together!
He saw Shuji, and he rushed to him, throwing an arm around him and laughing. “A girl gave me a present.” When Shuji scowled he lifted up the fish cell phone strap. “Look! Because she wanted to get something to remember our trip here.” He leaned closer to Shuji’s ear. “A girl!” He laughed in delight, flushing in pleasure. “Shuji-kun! Look!”
Shuji saw his step-sister sitting at the table watching them, her face heated, and he scowled as he shrugged the other male off and moved a step away. “It’s just a cell phone strap,” he said with some irritation.
Akira leaned closer again. “A girl gave it to me,” he repeated.
Shuji backed up. “Fine, a girl gave it to you.” He went to a different table with his date.
Akira returned to the table where Suujii waited, and pulled out his cell phone. He attached it, and held it up so it dangled between them. His eyes glowed, and he looked at her. “Thank you. Ohhh!” He lifted up the bag that was on another chair, and pulled out the stuffed shark. It was as long as his forearm, and he playfully made it lunge at her again. “Here.”
Suujii blinked, and took the toy. “Thank you, Akira-kun.”
He flushed in embarrassment, and pointed to her drink. “Drink before it gets warm.” But as she cradled the shark in one arm and drank some of her tea he watched the blush that still wasn’t fading from her cheeks, and the smile that wouldn’t go away even as she drank.
They later went to a mall, and browsed. The shark was safely in the bag again, and they explored several of the stores. Shuji tsk-ed in annoyance and watched as Akira and Suujii tried on hats and sunglasses and posed for the other to judge. They were laughing and ignoring everyone else who was snickering at them. He hadn’t thought they’d get along so well. It had been a bit of revenge to get Kusano to be her date. Why he’d had to take her along he had no idea. Family or not ~~ and he didn’t consider her family ~~ he wasn’t pleased to have to include her into all parts of his life. So out of spite he’d paired her up with Kusano. Only, they were having too much fun! Even at the aquarium they’d been having a good time. And she’d bought a present for Kusano!
It was enough to ruin his day.
They ended the day with a boat tour. The sun was hanging low on the horizon, and the pinks, purples, and reds of a flaming sky were reflected on the surface of the water. Suujii lowered her sunglasses and watched the sunset. Akira stood beside her; his sunglasses were perched atop his fedora hat, and contemplated the ocean and the sunset as well. She had a similar hat on, and was thankful for the fact, as the sea breeze would have had her hair flying into her face.
“Akira-kun?” When he glanced at her she smiled up at him. “Thank you for today. I had a great time.”
……………………….
“Well, welcome back!” their father greeted when they entered. “How was your day?”
Suujii beamed. “I had a great time! We went to the aquarium, the mall, a boat tour, and then out to a restaurant for a late supper.” She kissed his cheek. “I’m going to wash up and then get to bed. Good night!”
“Good night,” he smiled. He glanced at his son. “Did you get to bond with your sister?”
“It was couples,” Shuji reminded. “So we didn’t really get to talk. I’m going to wash up once she’s done and get to bed.”
His father frowned slightly. “Did you have a good day?” he asked.
Shuji paused in the stairs. “Sure. Good night.”
“You can’t force them to love each other.”
Their father watched his son go upstairs, and sighed heavily. “I know,” he replied to his wife. “But I was hoping that today would have helped them to bond more.”
“Give them time.”
Upstairs Suujii didn’t linger in the shower or the tub afterwards. She knew Shuji still had to wash. Besides, she wanted to unpack her souvenirs from today. In the room she shared with her sister she went to her desk and placed the two bags on it.
“What’s all that?”
Suujii flushed. “Things Akira-kun and I bought,” she said with a smile.
“Ooh. So you had a good time?”
She faced her younger sister, and nodded. “It was great!” As she recounted her day she pulled out the shark, the cell phone strap, the hat and sunglasses, a few small boxes of treats, and some other little toys and things that could only be called souvenirs. Each were given a special place on her desk or dresser, except for the shark that she named Akira-kun and placed on her bed. Lying there, and cuddling up to it, she shut her eyes and sighed.
He’d been so attentive. He’d been so kind and thoughtful. He’d noticed when the sea breeze had chilled her, and he’d removed his long sleeved shirt and draped it over her shoulders. He’d known when some of the other girls had upset her, and he’d start to say or act funny to cheer her up. There was also that glow in his eyes. It was so often there, and when he looked at her she wondered if he could hear how her heart sped up loudly.
Had he enjoyed today too? Did he hope they could go out again like she hoped they could? Was he lying there on his bed thinking of her like she was thinking of him? She hoped so because as it stood she very much liked Kusano Akira.
