The Decision
Steve continued to play. “How do you like the room?”
Joe overcame his initial shock and stammered over his words to looked around the room with its stained wooden walls, “It…it’s just as I… remembered….”
“We all hated this place, but I’ve grown to love it here.”
“We had some good times here…and loud.” Joe replied moving closer.
“And new discoveries were made here.” Steve finally looked up at him, giving Joe a warm smile.
Joe stared at him, until the blue eyes of his long lost friend turned back to the guitar that lay across his legs, fingers barely touching the strings to make the soft music flow out from years gone.
Joe brought his arm up and raked his fingers through his hair, where they remained to grip tightly, “I must be dreaming, this can’t be real.”
“It’s as real as you want it to be.”
“But this…this place has been gone for years.”
“And so have I.”
Joe suddenly reached out to touch him and quickly snatched his hand back. “But you….you’re warm.”
“And the walls are cold, just like before.” Steve told him.
Joe continued to watch him in disbelief as he came to terms of where he was, “What did you mean by new discoveries?”
“The connection you share with Sav, it’s always been there. I noticed it right off.”
“But it was that of just friends.”
“No," Steve sat his guitar down and pulled out another cigarette, sticking it between his lips, he looked up Joe again, "It was more than that.”
“We never thought about crossing that line until recently.” Joe said thoughtfully.
“Yes I know, but before that happened, you buried your feelings deep inside you, Sav didn’t, he just never let it show...not that much anyway.”
“And ever since he became…” Joe’s voice trailed off as he realized this was all too real.
“A vampire, I know about that too.” Steve replied.
“But how….”
“I met him here, same as you. I knew both of you were coming some time ago.”
“Here, where is here?”
“It’s called the cross roads by many. I choose this one because I knew it would be familiar to you," Steve swept his arm around in a gesture to include the entire room they were in, "It would bring about good memories.”
Joe looked around the room again, it was exactly as he remembered it the last day they had all spent there, before packing all the equipment in Rick's van. Even the large pile of rubbish was still there that Joe had swept there himself. “Sav did this, he made me come here, didn't he?” Joe asked.
Steve was nodding his head. “He just didn’t want it to be this soon.”
“I don’t think he realized it at first, what he did.”
“No, he didn’t. What Sav kept telling you was the truth. He only learned of what the consequences of his action were, after the night in Paris with you. Not until he read Nick's journal's did he understand what you would be facing.” Steve reminded him.
“I told him to get out of my life.” Joe’s eyes began to tear up at the memory. “I didn’t mean that, but he tried to kill himself anyway.”
“But you brought him back.”
“Did he come here again?” Joe asked.
“You only get one chance to come here.” Steve answered. "Only one decision to make."
“What did you tell him the first time?”
“That it wasn’t his time and he had to go back. The ultimate choice was his to make, just as it is for you.”
Joe stared at him a moment before his next question was asked, “What would you say to me?”
“You have to go back, you can’t stay here either.”
“But what if I want to stay?”
Steve sighed sadly. “Then it would destroy Sav. He would die this time and no one could help him.”
“I never wanted to be what he is Steve.”
Steve could see and feel his doubts about returning. His smile was warm as he looked at Joe again. “And you never wanted to have a closer relationship with him either, but you do.”
“How did you know about that?”
“I know everything.” Steve smiled as he picked up his guitar and began to play again, music filled the room. “I know about Amber and Thomas Richard, and Rebecca, very beautiful and loving woman. She loves you and Sav very much. And I know about Nick.”
“Really, then you know what he’s done to Sav.”
“Honestly, I wanted to go down there and scare the wits out of him, but they wouldn’t let me. But know this; Sav does love him in his own twisted kind of way.”
“And he loves me.” Joe mumbled looking at his feet.
“With every fiber of his being,” Steve replied sternly. “If you don’t go back, every one of those people, including Nick, will be devastated, not only for your death, but for Sav’s as well.”
A soft voice echoed through the room and Joe looked around. He felt the tingling sensation in the pit of his stomach. It came again stronger and louder this time. Steve put his guitar down and stood up. Joe turned around as he pinpointed where the voice was coming from. Steve came up close behind him.
“You must go now, Sav is calling you.” Steve whispered in his ear.
“But I’m afraid again.”
“Don’t be, Sav will guide you.”
“But I want…”
“No, you must.” Steve told him and gently nudged him. “Just remember that I will always be looking over you and yours.”
“Come with me?” Joe asked him.
“I can’t leave here, Joe. I made my choice years ago, and now you must make yours.”
Joe could clearly hear Sav now. His pleading voice called out to him to come back and the tremor there as the emotions over took him. Joe could feel his pain and desperation when he didn’t respond to his pleas.
“Joe please come back to me….please.” Sav begged through unseen tears.
“I can help you make that choice.” Steve said in his ear and kissed his cheek, then pushed him forward. “Go.”
Joe took several steps toward Sav’s voice and was pulled back without any more help from Steve. He felt the liquid dripping into his mouth, his own throat moving of its own accord, swallowing what had pooled in his mouth. It burned its way to his stomach and his body demanded more. He gripped the arm that was offered to him and sucked hard, pulling the freely given blood into him, to quench the burning in his stomach. He didn’t recall the bottle being shoved into his hand and drinking all of it. When Joe had satisfied some of his thirst, he opened his eyes and found Sav sitting right in front of him. He watched the tears escape his eyes to run down his cheek. Joe reached up and gently wiped them away.
“I thought I lost you.” Sav choked out.
“I saw…saw…”
“Steve.” Sav finished for him.
“Yes, he was waiting for me.”
“I know.” Sav whispered. “Lye down, you need to rest. We can talk about that in a few days when you’re strong enough.”
“I don’t want to lye down.”
“The next couple of days and nights will be painful. Your body is still going through changes as the rest of your human blood dies. You will feel the pains of first hunger soon and you will need your strength to fight it. It’s enough to drive you crazy, and you will stop at nothing to get what your body demands.”
“And what is that?”
“Your first kill, to satisfy that hunger.” Sav informed him.
“What?”
Sav reached up and touched his face. “Its ok, I’ll be here to help you. You can’t kill me if it’s mine you take.”
“Is that what you did, kill someone?”
“No, Lacey kept me from doing that.”
“But you did anyway.”
“Yes.” Sav whispered. “No more question, we’ve plenty of time for that.”
Joe watched him shed his robe and slip under the covers. Sav gently pulled him down and moved closer behind him, wrapping his arms tightly around Joe’s cooling body. Joe held tight to his hand and closed his eyes. He could feel the exhaustion creeping in from what he had just been through. Before sleep claimed him, he heard Sav whisper in his ear. “I love you too Joe… forever.”
“Forever…” he mumbled back.
