He woke up for the first time in weeks feeling rested and free of the lingering fear the nightmare usually left him with, in fact, he’d only had it the one time. He smiled happily to himself in his bunk and decided to get up and claim the bathroom first. Quietly he opened his curtain and peeked out, everyone else was still out cold; today was going to be a fantastic day.
Quietly sliding out of his bunk he noticed his pants were a little looser, hell, his clothes in general felt a little weird. He shook it off though; hangovers were never a walk in the park. He closed the door to the bathroom before turning on the light and dumped his clothes on the floor by the sink. When he looked up into the mirror he froze. His chest tightened, knees turned to water, and he was pretty sure he was going to pass out again. He had to be dreaming, maybe another nightmare, because shit like this just didn’t happen in real life.
He reached out a shaky hand and touched his pale reflection on the mirror, the glass was cool and smooth under his fingers. The floor beneath him was cold on his bare feet, his clothes felt strange, the light was bright in his eyes. He wasn’t dreaming. The sensations were too real to be a dream. He was staring at himself, but he wasn’t himself.
He screamed.
Faster than he thought possible the door to the bathroom was wrenched open and his four friends stood in the doorway red eyed and in full defense mode. They froze and stared at him completely bewildered.
“Who the hell are you?” Matt’s voice was rougher with sleep and had the slightest undercurrent of menace. He couldn’t help it, he burst into tears. His voice was wrong, his hands were wrong, his whole fucking body was all wrong and now not even his friends recognized him.
“Dammit Matt, be a little gentler would ya’.” Brian muttered. He pushed past the throng in the doorway and cautiously reached out and took his hand, “Hey it’s okay, he’s just pissy because he’s got a hangover.” He murmured. “Relax honey we’re not gonna hurt you.” His hand was warm and for anyone else it would have been a comfort but it only made Zack cry harder, “Syn it’s me, it’s Zacky.” He pulled his hand away from him and backed up as far as he could in the small space and sank to the floor.
“Crazy chick in the bathroom, what a great way to start the fucking morning.” Johnny muttered.
“Zacky’s not in his bunk,” Jimmy’s voice was low and angry, “but there’s blood in it.”
“What did you do with Zack?” Brian asked sharply. Zack trembled, “I am Zacky.” He whimpered and drew his knees up hiding his head in them still crying.
“The fuck you are!” Matt snapped, “Where’s Zacky?”
He cowered back and trembled more, he really didn’t want to be yelled at right now and he was terrified of what would happen if they called the police, which they were probably gearing up to do. There had to be something he could do, something he could tell them to convince them he wasn’t some whacked out fan that snuck onboard the bus.
“It’s me, I swear it’s me. I had a bloody nose last night that’s why the blood is there.”
“Fuck this, call the cops.” Johnny said disgustedly. Ice settled in his stomach and he shook his head as fresh tears rolled down his cheeks, “No, please guys, please believe me! I don’t know what happened!” The solution came to him at once, almost like it was waiting to make a grand entrance, “Brian’s gay!” he looked up at the guitarist as the rest of the band fell silent. Brian’s eyes took on an edge and Zack scrambled to finish his explanation, “Last night you told us.” He racked his brain desperately searching for any hazy detail that would confirm who he was. “The king is dead, long live the queen!” he blurted out. Brian’s eyes widened. All four were silent for what seemed like an eternity.
“Holy fuck.” Johnny finally breathed. Brian crouched down in front of him and hesitantly ran his fingers down the side of his face, “Sweet mother of God.” He murmured, “Zacky.”
Zack wrapped his arms around him still shaking, Brian held him close, “God damn…Zacky…how?” his breath was warm against his neck, grounding and reassuring, quiet and the comfort he was desperately seeking. He clung tightly to his friend as shock slowed his brain down and forced him into sleep.
He woke up groggy and with a screaming headache. He groaned and stopped, his voice was off, high and light. The revelation from the morning hit him with the force of a two by four and his breath caught in his chest. He sat up and felt his face; no stubble, his cheek bones were higher, his hair fell past his shoulders. He pulled his shirt out and looked down it, two small creamy mounds tipped with rosy buds. He dropped his shirt and wrapped his arms around his waist trying not to cry.
Someone quietly moved his bunk curtain back a little and Brian peeked in, he smiled a little when he saw Zack awake and staring at him, “I’m not gonna hurt you Zacky.” He murmured. Zack realized she probably looked like a frightened animal. She tried to loosen her arms but they refused to obey and instead she shuddered. Brian pushed the curtain back all the way and slowly reached in. His fingertips lightly brushed her bare arms and she relaxed and scooted a little closer to the edge of the bunk. Brian’s smile widened and he easily wrapped an arm around her small body and pulled her to him, “Zacky,” his arms were as warm as his voice and just as comforting, “I don’t know what the fuck is going on, but we’re gonna figure it out.” His arms tightened a little and Zack completely relaxed uncurling her arms from around her waist and wrapping them around Brian’s neck, “This isn’t real.” She sniffed. Brian sighed and lightly kissed her temple, “It’ll be all right Zacky.”
“Another nightmare? Or is he awake.” Matt’s husky voice drifted over to her and she raised her head a little. Matt gave her a small smile, “Hey Zacky.” He murmured, he came over and stood next to Brian. His hazel eyes darkened with worry when he took in her haggard appearance, “Fuck, Zacky.” He sighed. Zack nodded in agreement, he had no idea what to do either.
“We need to come up with an excuse to cancel the rest of the tour.” Brian said softly, his warm hand stroked Zack’s back reassuringly. Zack stiffened and sat up shaking her head furiously, “No.”
“Zack—” Matt started, but Zack cut him off angrily, “No! I’m not going home so I can sit in my house hiding from everyone and have even more time to dwell on this.” She pointed to her body and then crossed her arms glaring at the two. Brian was the first to move, he cocked his head to the side, “So how are we going to explain this to everyone?” he asked logically. Zack looked down and fidgeted; how could she go from depressed to angry back to depressed in less than thirty seconds? “I’m not going home.” She muttered sullenly.
“We got a show to play in a little over eight hours, you either come up with a damn good excuse as to why you’re now a woman or I’m telling everyone my voice is going again.” Matt said evenly. Zack’s anger returned, “Fine.” She snapped. Brian snorted, “I don’t know what happened to you Zacky, but you’re definitely a chick through and through.”
Her anger faded again and was replaced with confusion, “What?”
Matt laughed, not his usual response when people snapped at him, “You just went from calm to bitchy in less than a minute.”
Zack tried not to glare at him, but figured he failed once he started laughing harder, “I’m so glad I don’t have a sister.” He snickered. Brian joined in the laughter too, “God you would’ve driven her crazy, I still feel sorry for your mom.”
They started picking at each other but Zack tuned them out, instead she focused on her excuse to stay on tour.
“We’ll tell everyone I’m my sister.” She said breaking up her two friends’ bantering. The both stared at her confused, “We’re gonna do what?” Brian asked. Zack wrapped her arms around her waist again, “We can tell everyone I’m a sister, Zacky got sick and I stepped in to keep the tour going.” The plan sounded pretty solid to him.
“And what are we going to tell the friends and family that know you don’t have a sister?” Brian asked. Zack shrugged, “I don’t think mom will mind having a girl for a little while.” She didn’t let herself dwell on the possibility that it might be the rest of her life. Matt rubbed his temple and relented, “Fine, start making calls.” He sighed. Zack smiled and hopped out of the bunk and hugged him. She’d never really thought about how big Matt was, but now that she was on the ground with him she realized all of her friends were going to be a great deal taller than her, well, except for Johnny. Matt wrapped an arm around her waist and gave her a gentle squeeze, “What are we gonna call you?” he murmured. Zack looked up at him and rested her cheek against his chest while she thought, “Raven.” She said after a moment. Brian came up behind her and she suddenly felt tiny between the two of them, she pressed a little closer to Matt.
“You got a stage name Raven?” he asked playfully. She smiled and swatted his leg, “When I think of one you’ll be the first to know.”
Once Matt and Brian left to go tell the others about her new identity Raven dragged her bag out and started the arduous process of finding a clean outfit. Less than a minute into her search she realized all of her clothes were going to be too big on her smaller body. Her pajamas were already practically falling off her. She glowered at the bag for a moment and then went to find Johnny.
She found the little bassist lounging in the front with the rest of the band nursing his hangover. Her confidence faltered and instead of striding confidently in to their midst like she was used to she paused at the doorway. She was acutely aware of how loose her clothes were, a few seconds ago it had been only irritating, now it made a light blush creep across her cheeks. She fidgeted in the entry trying to coax her shattered courage to the fore.
“We’re not gonna bite Zacky.” Jimmy said from the table, how he knew she was in the doorway was a mystery to her. He had his back to where she was and as far as she knew she had made barely any sound and no one else had noticed her until he said something. The other three turned to look at her, what was left of her courage and confidence fled. She dropped her eyes to the floor mumbled something incomprehensible even to herself. She couldn’t remember why she was even in the front lounge.
“Zacky, it’s okay.” Brian’s voice was close and a split second after his feet came into her line of vision two arms circled her waist and pulled her close, “You know us Zacky, it’s okay.” He whispered. Raven took a calming breath but didn’t raise her head, “I need to go shopping.” She murmured. Brian gently tilted her head up and kissed her forehead, “Anything.” He said softly.
“Can I borrow some clothes Johnny?” She asked quietly. He nodded and got up, “Yeah, no problem.” He slipped past her and crouched down by the first lower bunk and quickly pulled out a shirt and pants. She took them with a quick ‘thank you’ and all but ran to the bathroom.
Once she was in the small safe haven she turned the lock and sank down in front of the door. “The fuck is wrong with me?” she muttered, then laughed weakly, “What the fuck isn’t wrong with me?” She pulled her too big shirt and pants off quickly and put on Johnny’s. Someone knocked softly on the door, “Zacky—er—Raven, what’s wrong?” Matt’s soft voice whispered through the wood. Raven got up unlocked and opened the door. Matt stepped back and smiled wryly, “Relatively speaking that is.”
Raven smiled at him and wrapped her arms around herself, “I dunno, just a little shy I guess.” She murmured. Matt flashed a warm smile showing his dimples, “I think a new wardrobe would help that.”
Raven grimaced. The bra was way too small.
“Well?” Jimmy asked impatiently, Raven scowled, “You were right.” She admitted. Jimmy laughed triumphantly. They had argued while searching through the bra and panty section of Kohl’s about what size she would need. Raven had thought her breasts to be a little small and grabbed an A cup; Jimmy had disagreed and picked out a C. Jimmy, of course, was right. The A was too small and the C fit perfectly. She opened the door and peeked out, “Stop celebrating and get me a couple more.” She ordered. He was leaning in the entryway, which was probably freaking out the other women who were shopping. He straightened and saluted and went to get her more underwear.
When she had told the guys she needed to go shopping she wasn’t expecting any of them to want to go with her, instead they all came along. Jimmy and Matt, not to the surprise of anyone, were the best at guessing her size in everything. Particularly the underwear.
A strip of clothing fell over the door and landed on her head, “Hey!” she huffed. She pulled it off and then promptly threw it back over, “Hell. No.”
“Ah, c’mon Raven, every woman needs at least one.” Matt laughed and tossed it back over.
“I’m not wearing a thong to satisfy any of your perverse fantasies.” She answered. She threw it back over and again it came back over the door, “With some of the jeans you picked out it’s either that or a panty line.” He retorted.
“I could wear nothing.” She purred. Matt had nothing to say to that and she threw the strip of material back over at him.
Raven dumped her overstuffed bags of clothes into her bunk and started rummaging through the piles. “Matt!” she yelled. The singer looked away from his bunk and at Raven with mild alarm on his face; until she threw the thong on his head. He laughed and pulled it off and threw it back at her.
“What happened Brian asked coming in from the front lounge. Raven glared at Matt, “He thinks he knows what I need to wear.” She tossed the thong to the end of her bunk. Matt was still snickering as he grabbed his hat and headed for the back lounge to start his vocal warm-ups. Brian rolled his eyes and hugged her, “Have you called your parents yet?” he murmured. Raven cringed, “No. God what am I going to tell them? I mean, you guys didn’t believe it was me and you were looking at me, I can only guess what they’ll do.”
“Sorry Raven, I don’t know.” He sighed. Raven sighed too, “Maybe I’ll just wait for the media to let them know.” She mused. Brian gave her a small squeeze, “You think they’ll take it better if someone else tells them?”
“No, but I won’t have to be the one to break it to them.” She said. Brian chuckled, “True. Do whatever you think is best love.” He kissed her cheek and went to finish getting himself ready. Raven smiled happily to herself, Brian always knew how to cheer her up. Now, she had to figure out what she was going to wear on her debut night.
