I was completely mortified. Is this really happening right now? I must be getting punked or something. My brain can hardly process that the girl from the bar earlier is now standing in my mother’s living room, and she’s not even here with or for me, but for my brother. Oh, and lets not forget that I just spit beer all over her. I couldn’t have moved quicker to set my bottle down onto the coffee table and rush back into the kitchen, returning with a handful of napkins.
The girl looked as stunned as I probably felt, “God, I’m so sorry, I’m such a klutz,” I apologized quickly, bunching the napkins together while attempting to clean the poor girl off. Slowly my eyes locked with hers and it wasn’t long before I was stuttering my way through a lie as I continued to wipe the beer off of her like an idiot, “It went down the wrong way and I choked…”
She smiled at me, “It’s okay, really,” I wasn’t so sure it was. And when I actually took the time to pry my eyes away from those lips, those eyes—hell, her face—I suddenly realized where my hands were.
“Oh! I’m sorry!” I exclaimed, drawing my hands away from her breasts so fast I probably could have snatched them right off. She chuckled quietly then, that adorable ass smile she was giving me casually forming into a full on grin, “That’s alright too,” she told me, laughing softly once again.
“Damn Kell, you don’t have any shame do you?” I spun around quickly on my heel and faced my brother. Well shit, I had forgotten he and my mom were even in the room until now.
I rolled my eyes and laughed nervously, “Oh please, she’s all yours bro,” I said, patting my older brother on his chest. He circled around me and stopped in front of Carrie, “She is a pretty big klutz…I don’t know how the hell she became a bartender,”
Um hello, I’m still in the room, “I’m a klutz when it comes to many things, but believe me,” I began slowly, causing Carrie to glance over my brothers shoulder and meet my eyes just in time for me to finish my sentence, “I know how to use my hands. They’re magical,” What the hell is wrong with you Kelly? You’re openly flirting with your brother’s girlfriend in front of him…and what the hell was that, did you just wink at the girl?
Luckily no one else in the room, besides Carrie it seems, realized I was only half joking. And thank goodness for my mom changing the subject afterwards, “Carrie, honey, why don’t you go on up to Kelly’s room and get changed. It’s late anyways and we should all probably get some sleep,”
Wait, what? Back up. Crazy lady that I call my mom just said what now? My mother must have read my mind because as I was turning to face her she was already speaking, “Carrie’s going to be sharing your room with you this weekend. I didn’t want any funny business from mister charmer here,” she pointed an accusing finger in my brother’s direction.
And you don’t expect any from me?
She went on, “It could give you two more time to bond or something, I don’t know. But she and Jason aren’t sharing a room,” and I guess that was that. But I’m almost certain that my brother wouldn’t exactly appreciate the bonding I had in mind where his girlfriend was concerned.
“I’m going to bed now. I’ll see you kids in the morning,” my mother announced before she finally ascended the staircase.
I clapped my hands together loudly before pulling them apart and slapping my brother against the back, “Well big guy, looks like I’m going to take your girlfriend to bed now,” oh god if he only knew how much I actually wanted to.
My brother rolled his eyes and laughed, like actually tossed his head back and laughed from the pit of his stomach laughed, “Even if you were being serious with what you were trying to insinuate just now, Carrie would never go for you,” hmm, I don’t know about that Jason, little miss “under different circumstances” looks like she definitely would have taken my bait had you not been in the picture.
I smiled widely and patted my brother’s back again, “Okay Jase, for your egos sake, I will let you believe that. Enjoy sleeping in bed all alone while I’m upstairs snuggling with that gorgeous girl right there,” I pointed at Carrie for effect and moved towards the stairs, “It’s just you and your hand tonight,” I sang, before I finally jogged up the staircase.
My brother knew I was only teasing—or at least to his knowledge, none of the things I had said were actually true—but I knew otherwise. I left the two of them downstairs to say goodnight to each other, quite possibly because I didn’t want to see my brother making out with the girl.
Pushing into my bedroom I slid my hand up the side of the wall and found the light, instantly the room was illuminated as I pushed the door shut behind me. I can’t even remember the last time I had slept in here was.
I moved towards the center of the room, unbuttoning my vest as I went, stopping at the foot of my bed. Sliding the vest off of my shoulders I tossed it onto my mattress while glancing up at the wall above my headboard. A bulletin board with pictures of my friends and I, accumulated over the years, filled the wide space. I was admiring the pictures and the memories that were behind them when my bedroom door was being opened.
I turned, feet planted firmly and only my upper body facing her, as Carrie entered the room.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” she said in surprise, turning quickly to put her back to me, effectively running head first into the side of the door. My eyes went wide with horror as I rushed to her side, “Oh my god are you okay?” I asked, genuinely concerned that something was wrong.
I watched her nod as I placed my hand against the door and pushed it completely shut before helping her to the floor before she possibly passed out, “Shit, I hope you don’t get a concussion or anything,” I mumbled, kneeling down in front of her as she propped herself up against the door, “I’m fine, really. I suppose the night wouldn’t have been complete if I didn’t embarrass myself too. I happen to also be a klutz,” she replied, nudging my shoulder with hers.
Offering a warm smile I gently grazed my fingertips over her forehead were a tiny bump was beginning to form, “It could probably use some ice, but I think you’ll be okay,” I concluded, lowering my fingers from her forehead before pushing up to stand.
I extended my hand out to her, “Let’s get you situated on my bed while I run downstairs for a bag of ice,” I suggested, tightly grasping her hand in mine and pulling her up from the floor, “Sounds like a plan,” she agreed, walking with me slowly to my bed. I lowered her down onto the mattress and stepped back, “Alright, I’ll be back in a second. Need anything else?” I asked.
When I looked down at her face I noticed that her cheeks were a light shade of red, “What?” I quizzed, wondering what could possibly be making her blush, “You um…uh…you…” she stammered, and I finally noticed my vest beside her. Oh, I had no top or bra on. Fantastic, that’s why she ran into the door.
Slapping my hands over my breasts I turned my back to her, “Right. Sorry, I’m so sorry,” I apologized, rushing to the other side of the room to my dresser. Pulling the top drawer open I tugged the first shirt that came into sight out and slid into it, “Sorry,” I repeated, turning to face her on the bed again, “I’m so used to not really having other people around, so I don’t even realize that I’m not wearing clothes, and even when some people are around it doesn’t even matter and I—I’m sorry, I’m totally babbling, and I think if I say sorry one more time, I’m going to shoot myself. Ice…I’ll be back,” I breathed out, disappearing out into the hall.
I returned a couple minutes later to find that Carrie had changed into pajamas. I think I’m a bit sad I missed out on that. Not like she would have actually changed in front of me anyways, but you never know.
Holding the zip lock bag of ice, I pushed the door shut and crossed the room until I met her where she sat on the right side of the bed now, “I come bearing gifts…well, gift…” I laughed nervously, extending the ice out to her.
She smirked, “Thanks,” she graciously accepted the bag of ice from my hand and placed it against her forehead, “Ah, that feels so good,” she moaned, and I think my throat just dropped to my stomach, “No problem,” I responded nonchalantly while taking a few steps away from her and clicking the lamp on my night stand on.
I was surprised then when she suddenly jumped to her feet, “I’m an idiot, I didn’t even ask which side you slept on—“
“Oh no, don’t worry about it! You sleep on the right side, that’s fine, it doesn’t matter which side I sleep on,” I told her, which was mostly true, though I did usually prefer the right side, I would happily sleep on the damn floor right now if the girl asked me to.
“Are you sure?” she asked uncertainly, while I made my way towards the wall where my door was and flicked the light off, “Absolutely,” I assured her, walking back across the room and taking a seat on the left side of my mattress, “Alright,” she whispered, lowering herself back down.
“You don’t mind if I take my pants off in front of you right…usually I like to sleep with as little clothes as possible, but I don’t want to make you uncomfortable or anything…the shirt I have on is pretty long and—“
“Kelly,” she cut me off, “It’s fine. This is your room and your bed. I think I can handle you sleeping in a shirt,”
I nodded, “Right. Yeah, of course, okay then,” I mumbled. Quickly I undid the button on my jeans, shoved them down my hips, and kicked them off onto the floor when they bunched at my ankles.
I drew the covers back on my side and slowly slid beneath them. Slowly I rolled over to face her, “Well, goodnight. You can turn that light off whenever you’re ready to, I can sleep with it on if you need it,” I told her.
She shook her head, “Oh, I can turn it off now, it’s no biggie. I don’t need the light on to hold a bag of ice to my head,” she laughed and leaned forward to click the light off, “Actually, I think I’m done with this,” I watched her in the dark as she lowered the ice from her head, “You can just set it down on the nightstand, I’ll toss it out in the morning. You’re sure you’re not going to pass out or anything, right?” I asked, needing to be sure.
She slid under the covers, rolled onto her stomach and then propped herself up on her elbow, “Not unless you’re going to make me pass out,” my eyes could have been deceiving me, it was dark, but I could have sworn she winked at me.
I chuckled, “I probably could, but I don’t think that would be appropriate,” she chuckled too and lowered her elbow until she was laying flat against the pillow, “You’re right. Well, goodnight,” she whispered, yawning.
Yawning was contagious, I followed suit, “Goodnight,”
Though the night definitely could have been a great one, because I knew not to cross a line with her it ended there. I had no doubt that sleep was going to be damn near impossible with her beside me, and this was going to be the first night in a long time that I was sleeping in a bed with a woman and not touching her.
Well, I suppose there is always a first time for everything—hands off Kelly.
