Ok. Still going a little slow. But I like to pay attention to detail. =)
I did research before writing the flight. I've never written anything with a flight so yeah. >.> I did my best.
This chapter is mainly getting to know the main character. But you'll like her. =D
Anyway, here you go. =)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
‘The past three hours seemed to fly by’, Scarlett reflected as she stood at the gate entrance hugging her mom goodbye. She’d always been there; her helper and her protector. A small wave of fear overtook her as it finally dawned on her; her mom wouldn’t be there to protect her anymore. She’d have to deal with the stares, curious looks, and questions.
Sensing her daughter’s distress and guessing the reason, Lily gave her an affirming squeeze saying, “Don’t worry about it. If anyone asks don’t be afraid to tell the truth. It’s always a good way to start any relationship.”
Grimacing, Scarlett released her mom. Digging her cell phone out of her bag she checked the time. 10:36 am. She had a fifteen and half hour flight ahead of her. Hard to believe that in fifteen hours it would be nine a.m. where she was going. She’d get there with enough time to have a quick breakfast and go to her interview. Scarlett smiled, grasped her mother’s hands and said, “Don’t worry about me mom. I’ll be okay.” A voice came over the intercom saying, “Flight 757 to Detroit is now boarding.”
Lily, wearing a sad smile, turned to her daughter, grasped her hand and said, “Come on. I’ll walk you to the entrance.” Scarlett heard the sadness in her mother’s voice and her heart weighted with guilt. She was leaving her mother behind, not knowing when she’d see her again. A lump started to form in her throat and a burning sensation behind her eyes. She swallowed and hung her head to hide her face. Seeming to sense her daughter’s distress, yet again, she squeezed Scarlett’s hand and wrapped an arm around her waist.
When they finally reached the gate, Scarlett stopped short and continued to stare at the floor. Should she get on the plane? Or should she stay behind and take care of her mom? Her mom wouldn’t mind if she chose to leave. But could she really live that far away from her mother? She was all Scarlett had left. She bit her lip and furrowed her brow. She felt her mother squeeze her hand yet again. Scarlett ignored it and continued to stare at her shoes.
A hand snaked under her chin and pulled up. Scarlett’s eyes met her mother’s emerald green ones. “Scar, you’re doing it again. Stop over-analyzing everything. Just go. I’ll be fine.”
As if on cue, a few tears escaped their prison, and slid down her cheeks. Lily hugged her daughter close and whispered, “Shhh. Don’t cry. Everything’s fine.” Scarlett sniffed and pulled her mom closer, burying her face into Lily’s shoulder. Her mother started rubbing circles on her lower back, trying to soothe the young girl’s sadness. “Sweetie, come on. Calm down. There’s nothing to worry about. We’re both going to be fine. You’re being silly, so stop your crying. Please.” Scarlett sniffled again, hugging her mother close. “Scar, you’re going to be alright. No need to worry. Now come on before you miss your flight.” Scarlett reluctantly released her mother, and rubbing the back of her hand across her nose.
“Sorry mom. It’s just I worry about what would happen if I left you.”
She felt a hand rubbing her hair, soothing. “Oh Scarlett, you worry too much. I raised you. Isn’t that proof enough that I’m capable to take care of myself?”
Scarlett shrugged, “I guess so.” She looked at her mom and smiled. They embraced one more time, and Lily whispered, “I don’t care what time it is when you get there. I want you to call me and give me an update. Tell me how your flight was and how your interview went.” Scarlett nodded, “Okay mom. I will.” Lily inhaled deeply and squeezed her daughter once more, “I love you.”
“I love you too, mom.”
As they separated, her mom reached up and stroked her hair. Scarlett leaned in and kissed her on the cheek, then turned and handed the ticket to the flight employee. A tear slipped across her cheek, she brushed it away before turning to face her mom. With one more, brief, sad smile, Scarlett accepted the ticket back and walked down the corridor to the plane, backwards, never once taking her eyes off her mom.
When her mom was no longer visible, due to the crowd of people, Scarlett hurried to get to her seat. The aisles were packed with passengers doing last minute bag checks and settling in. As she found her seat and began loading her bag into the overhead compartment, she caught a boy, no older than twelve, staring at her. ‘Wondering about my lip more than likely,’ she thought. She turned to him, arms half suspended with her carry-on, and gave him a genuine smile. The boy gasped as the scar stretched with her lips and revealed to rest of it on her chin. He quickly turned his head away and looked down. His mom turned giving him a curious glance. Scarlett turned away before she received an interrogation.
Sighing she stuffed her bag in the overhead compartment, shuffled down the row and flopped in her seat. She’d never flown before and, ironically, she’d gotten window seats on all her flights. She has a really bad fear of heights but it doesn’t ever really kick in unless she’s riding over a bridge suspended over water or going up into the attic. It’s going up and down the latter that really gets her. She sat there gazing out the tiny window, watching people do the last minute inspections on the plane, and saw the last of the luggage being loaded.
Heaving another sigh, she leaned back and closed her eyes. Finally, her life was starting. The only thing that bothered her was the fact that she didn’t know anything about the band. A loud ding emitted from the intercom, interrupting her thoughts and she opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling. A slightly bored male voice sounded throughout the plane, “Good Evening everyone. This is the captain speaking. We will begin our departure in ten minutes. Hope you all have a wonderful and safe trip. Thank you for flying Monarch Airways.” Turning to look at her neighbors, she found them still waiting quietly to see if there was more. When nothing happened, they turned back to their interests. Scarlett shrugged and turned back towards the window letting her thoughts pick up where they left off.
She didn’t know anything about the band or the company they were with. She hadn’t even seen a picture or heard the name. For all she knew, she could pass them on the street and not know it was them. Heck they might play beach music for all she knew!! She wondered how they’d react to her.
She wasn’t exactly normal. She was about 5’9” and had unusual straight hair that came half way down her back and bangs that reached her lips. The unusual part was the color: a mixture of mahogany and burgundy and natural gold highlights. People never believed her when she said it was naturally that way.
Everything about her screamed different from her clothes, to the way she interacted with others, to the music she listened to, even the way she walked!! She looked down at her outfit; a black top with short slightly ruffled sleeves that snapped down the front with a belt buckle at the top, her pants were her own creation made out of boredom with a pattern of swirls and dots crawling up the legs and stripes on the back pockets and tiny flowers on the top portion, her normal black arm warmers, a studded bracelet, a silver ring on her middle left finger, bottle cap earrings, an oval silver locket with pictures of her mom and Tyler, simple black eyeliner, and black high top converse. This was an everyday outfit; her formal wear was just as interesting. When it came to music she liked everything from Classical to Old School Rap to Japanese and Korean. She didn’t really have a liking for country just a few songs here and there, mainly the older stuff, but she loved almost anything Rock. She collected vinyl records and Harry Potter legos. Her bedroom was covered in band posters of every genre and painted purple, her favorite color. She detested the color pink. It wasn’t on any of her belongings. Once her aunt Debbie tried to get Scarlett to have her sweet sixteenth to be all pink, and the argument the ensued left many feelings hurt. If something ever bothered her, Scarlett always expressed her opinions and she was always open-minded.
Normally someone with her personality would be considered weird or an outcast. Despite her colorful self, in the two years of high school she did attend everyone seemed to like her. After the accident and the operations, she attended school for two weeks to see if things would ever return back to normal. She couldn’t stand the stares and whispers that everyone (including her so-called friends) shot at her or behind her back and begged her mom to let her attend college and get a GED instead. It wasn’t much better there but at least people didn’t have to pretend to like her or talk to her to make her feel comfortable. Alicia had been the one exception. She was a true friend. Never questioned the horrible scars or stared at them or acted repulsed by them. Scarlett even got to the point where she was comfortable not wearing arm warmers and letting her pick and call her Scarface. She reached up and touched her bottom lip. Her past she could hide, but that scar was a different thing altogether.
She absent-mindedly let her finger drift lazily over the curved one-inch scar. That was the day her life almost ended and her ability to fall in love again ended. On cue her right forearm started itching. It only did that for two reasons; when she started thinking about the accident or thinking about someone very dear to her. That would be happening a lot now that she was going to be apart from her mom.
Again the ding sounded, but a female’s voice came through this time. “Thank you for flying Monarch Airways. We will begin our departure in a few moments. Now we will be going over the safety rules for the plane….” Scarlett sighed again, and reached over to rub her forearm, turning to stare out the window. She hoped the flight would go by fast.
