“What are you in the mood for, Baby?”, Adam asks.
“I dunno. Whataya got? Your mom stocked the fridge a couple days ago.”
“I know. I told her what to get. You like eggs? I make killer omelettes. I can put in whatever you want. Mushrooms, peppers, onions, cheese?”
“All of the above?”
Adam grabs ingredients from the fridge. Tommy already knows where the coffee is stashed, and sets up the coffee pot, then looks through the cabinet for plates.
“Let’s go sit on the back porch”, Adam suggests.
Tommy opens the sliding glass door and steps outside, squinting in the bright sunlight. He sets the table, then comes in and watches Adam. He grabs a kitchen chair and sits on it backwards, resting his chin on his arms. Adam chops up the veggies and beats the eggs, waiting for the skillet to heat up. Tommy wonders if there are any tortillas in the fridge, to wrap it all up in. He gets up and starts poking through the fridge.
“Whataya looking for?”
“I wanna see if you have any tortillas in here. Easier to eat that way.”
“Bottom shelf.”
Tommy pulls the package out.
“Score!”
Adam laughs. Tommy stands next to him, watching, and steals a mushroom from the pile of veggies.
“Observe the master at work. First, the eggs, then you swirl the pan to distribute. Then the cheese. As soon as it starts melting, we throw in the veggies. Then we fold it over and let it cook.”
“That looks awesome, Adam, and it smells even better.”
Tommy finds the biggest mug in the cabinet, and pours himself a cup of coffee, and one for Adam. Adam finishes the omelettes, and they take their breakfast outside. Adam watches Tommy take a bite.
“Is it good?”
Tommy holds up one finger while he’s chewing.
“Oh my God, yes! It’s awesome! The cat’s pajamas! You rock, Babyboy.”
Adam just smiles. Tommy’s attention is captured by something a few feet away.
“I didn’t realize you had a grill back here.”
Adam shrugs.
“I never use it. Came with the house.”
“Does it work?”
“I dunno. Never tried it.”
“You should. I love cookouts.”
Tommy gets up to investigate.
“Dude! The tank is nearly full. We could whip up some awesome burgers and hot dogs and shit, and have friends over.”
“I’m not much of grill guy.”
“I totally am! It’d be so cool!”
“You know how to cook on one of these things?”
“Yeah. I used to do it all the time.”
“If I get the stuff, you’re cooking it.”
“Deal, Babyboy!”
Adam yawns. They finish their food and go back in. Adam wants to lay back down, but Tommy convinces him that it would be better for his digestion if he sat up for awhile, so they snuggle on the couch. Tommy grabs the remote and goes for the Syfy Channel. Adam holds him and closes his eyes.
“Thank you so much for breakfast, Babyboy. It was delicious.”
“Aw, you’re welcome, Sweetie. Happy?”
“Very.”
“Good. I want to make you happy.”
“You do.”
Adam’s cell phone rings. He looks at it.
“It’s Danielle. Hi Sweetie.”
Tommy goes to get up, but Adam shakes his head and tells him to stay.
“Aw, I’ve missed you too. It was amazing. I have so much to tell you. I have news. Or should I say, ‘We have news.’ Yeah. Tommy and I. No, we want to tell you in person. What are you doing for dinner? Good, then come over. We’ll order in.”
Tommy interjects.
“I can grill something.”
“Hang on, Sweetie.”
“Let’s do a cookout. Does she like burgers?”
“Tommy wants to know if you like burgers. He wants to cook on the grill. You will? Cool. Awesome. How about 6? Okay. Six it is, at my house. Love you.”
Tommy turns to Adam.
“I need to run home for a little while. I have a few things to take care of.”
“Like?”
“Clothes. Laundry. Post office. Pay bills.”
Adam nods.
“If I give you the money, will you pick up the food on the way back?”
“Yeah.”
They make a list, and Adam walks Tommy to his car and kisses him.
“See you in a few hours, Glitterbaby. I’m gonna get a little more sleep. Love you.”
“Love you too. You have my heart, Adam.”
Adam beams and strokes Tommy’s face.
“You have mine, Tommy.”
Tommy heads off to take care of a few things, and Adam goes back to sleep. A few hours later, Tommy is back. He lets himself in. Adam is in the shower.
“Hey Babyboy.”
“Oh good, you’re back. Danielle’s bringing dessert.”
“Cool.”
Adam gets dressed. Tommy is in the kitchen, setting up for dinner. Adam joins him.
“Do you realize this is our first dinner party together?”
Tommy laughs.
“One friend is a dinner party?”
“Well, yeah, kind of. We’re still entertaining together.”
Tommy shrugs.
“Okay. Oh, here’s the change.”
“You can keep it if you need it.”
“Adam...you don’t need to give me money.”
“What, I’m gonna let you go without stuff you need? Shut up, Tommy.”
Tommy rolls his eyes and puts the bills in his wallet. The doorbell rings. Adam opens it. He and Danielle embrace.
“Ooh, I missed the shit out of you!”
“Tommy!”
“Hey Darlin!”
“You give the best hugs! Here guys, put this in the freezer.”
“I’m gonna whip up a pitcher of margaritas. Who wants one?”
“Look at him, you’d think he lives here or something,” Adam jokes.
“Well I’m here more than I’m home.”
“Okay, so what do you guys have to tell me?”
“Come sit in the living room.”
Tommy brings Adam and Danielle their drinks. Adam pulls him onto his lap.
“We’re officially a couple. We’re doing a gradual public reveal. Have you seen Tommy’s Myspace page? He’s totally shipping us.”
“Eeee! I’m so happy for you! I love you both so much!”
(Group hug.)
“So what made you decide to do this? Your management is gonna shit a brick.”
“They know. We told them. I refuse to live a lie. Tommy’s my guy, and I don’t want to hide that anymore, and I don’t want him to either.”
“I thought you weren’t out to anyone yet, Tommy?”
“I wasn’t. I told my roommates, and some of my girl friends. Everyone’s cool with it. I’m telling my parents tomorrow at Easter dinner. You know what? If they can’t handle it, whatever. My life.”
“You don’t think they’ll like, disown you or anything?”
“Not sure how they’re gonna take it, but I guess I’m prepared for the worst. If it goes better than ‘get your gay ass out of my house’, I’ll be relieved, but I can’t pretend to be who I’m not anymore.”
“You’re ready to risk losing your parents for Adam?”
“I love Adam, and I’m ready to stop lying and leting them make me feel ashamed for it. I didn’t do anything wrong. Falling in love with someone isn’t a sin. Girl, guy, whatever.”
Adam smiles and hugs Tommy.
“God, I love this guy!”
Tommy kisses Adam and hops off his lap.
“I’m gonna start the grill.”
He leaves Adam and Danielle to talk. She asks him about the trip.
“Oh, that reminds me. I got a few souvenirs for you. Be right back.”
He comes back with jewelry and clothes for her. Tommy comes in and gets the burgers out of the fridge.
“Okay, who wants what?”
“Two. Well done.”
“One. Medium.”
“Got it.”
“Adam! You didn’t have to do this.”
“Honey, you love bling as much as I do. Enjoy it.”
Adam and Danielle get the rest of the food out of the fridge.
“You didn’t want to eat outside?”
“Too many bugs out there. I gotta have the exterminator come. Besides, Tommy’s allergic to bees, so unless you wanna see him scream and flail, no.”
“I knew you two were falling in love. I could just tell. You know Adam, sometimes when you least expect it, it finds you, and not always when it’s convenient. You just gotta go with it.”
“How cool is it that he’s gonna be traveling with me?”
“Well, considering how I had to listen to you both cry for a month while you were apart...”
“Wait, you and Tommy were talking this past month?”
“Duh. You both were saying exactly the same thing. 'I love him. I want to be with him. I’m dying without him.' ”
Adam sighs.
“I wanna go with him tomorrow, but he wants to do this by himself. I guess it’s just something he needs to do alone. At least if his parents freak out, he still has mine.”
“You’re both so sure they don’t know he’s with you?”
“If they do, they haven’t said. I just...I dunno, I wanna protect him, I guess. I can’t bear the thought of them rejecting him because of me. Because of us. But we’re 28. We don’t need anyone’s permission. I just want him to be honest with his parents, because if they don’t hear it from him first, they’re gonna hear it from someone else later.”
“Try not to worry. I think it’s gonna be okay.”
“I hope so.”
