CHAPTER ONE: BEGINNINGS
Don’t get close to anyone. That’s what my mother taught me when my father left us. I was only four years old at the time, but now I can see why my mother began to think that way, with the way my dad claimed to work late every night, then coming home at dawn reeking of alcohol, then eventually walking out on us for another woman.
I was only four when I met Chad. We met in preschool, when I stole a toy car from him and threw it at his head. We were inseparable from then on. We were the best of friends. We went everywhere together, gave each other advice on life, and were there for each other when times were the roughest.
He was there to offer me a hug when my dog got hit by a car.
I was at his house every day and night for two weeks when his grandmother died.
He held me and let me cry when my aunt was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Now I am calling
Hoping you'll hear me
We all need somebody
To believe in something
And I won't fear this
When I am falling
We all need somebody
That can mend…these broken bones…
Up until sixth grade, Chad was the only friend I had. We were labeled as the outcasts of Pointe Park Middle School; a title that would follow us until our high school graduation. Outcasts for what, I didn’t know. Maybe it was our open-mindedness on life. Maybe it was because I was raised under the religion of Wicca, and no one wanted to associate with the so-called ‘Satanic’ girl and her boyfriend.
In sixth grade, however, we met Mary and Brad. They were the first –and only– classmates who didn’t look down on us for being different. They were the ones who taught us to laugh off the cruel remarks made by other peers.
Brad, Mary, Chad and I had a special friendship that not even the roughest storm could mess up.
Many Saturday nights were filled with the four of us piling on my bed for horror movies. We even began our own Mystery Science Theater 3000 by renting the dumbest horror movies we could find, just to make fun of them. The guys usually left around midnight, and Mary would stay over with me.
A week before our junior prom, I decided to ask Chad if he wanted to go with me, ‘as friends’. I didn’t mention the fact that I’d had a crush on him since freshman year. “It would be awesome,” I said. “Mary and Brad are going together, we can all just hang out.”
He said no. He was already going to the prom with a sexy senior named Leah Turner. Leah had had her eye on Chad for months. She was beautiful, and she knew it. She also knew how to use her beauty to get any guy she wanted. Chad didn’t know that Leah was only using him to get the attention of the quarterback named Josh Davidson.
I went dateless to the prom. I was talking to Brad and Mary when I spotted Chad – handsome as ever, enter with Leah on his arm. I couldn’t help but feel jealous when I saw them together. Maybe if I had long blonde hair and blue eyes, a supermodel smile, and the body of a twenty-one-year-old, I’d be dancing with Chad instead.
When I saw Leah grab Chad and kiss him, I could not bear to see any more. I tore my eyes away from them and ran out, tears blurring my vision.
I heard Mary yelling for me to stop, but that only made me run faster. I stopped when I got to the parking lot, leaned against one of the cars, and began sobbing. Soon I felt two pairs of arms around me; Mary on my left and Brad on my right, hugging me.
I heard a voice say, “What’s wrong?” and I tensed up when I realized the voice belonged to Chad.
Mary told him that he was what was wrong. She began to tell him to fuck off, but I stopped her. “I need to talk to him for a minute,” I said.
As Mary and Brad went to leave, Mary said, “If he hurts you again, let me know, and my stiletto heel boots at home will make sure he never has kids.”
I nodded and they went back inside.
“What’s wrong? You ran out of there pretty fast,” Chad said.
“What’s wrong? What’s wrong? You turned down your best friend for the prom to take that…that…” I sputtered, “…that slut! She doesn’t even like you! I overheard her in the restroom. She’s just using you to get to Josh Davidson!”
There was a long silence. “Why didn’t you tell me this?” he asked.
“I tried. Several times. You shrugged me off because you didn’t want to hear it. I finally gave up because…well…you were happy. Who the fuck was I to get in the way of that?”
More silence. So I continued.
“She doesn’t care about you, Chad.” Then I whispered, “Not the way I do.”
He moved closer. “You care about me?”
I nodded. “A lot. I have since freshman year.”
Time after time
I keep running in circles
I can't deny what is real
You're the one…
Those words hung, suspended in the warm night air. I slowly raised my head to see Chad’s blue eyes locked on my hazel ones. He slowly leaned in, and my breath caught in my throat. Before I could say or do anything else, his lips were on mine, in a gentle, breathtaking kiss. My first kiss.
Time seemed to stand still. Nothing mattered except us. The warm May evening, the parking lot, the loud music coming from the gym…it all disappeared in that one instant.
Just when I thought all was lost
You came and made it all okay
I can’t be held responsible
This is all so new to me
Just when I think I’m invincible
You come and happen to me…
They say a kiss that wonderful only happens once.
They were right.
