Everlasting Love(Pt2)
Amber sat down in the soft cushion lounge chair in the gazebo. She had enjoyed sitting here countless days or nights since her father had it built 8 years ago for Evelyn. Situated far enough away from the house to be cast in a dim light from any of the lights on the back porch. The distance also added for privacy for whoever chose to use it. Amber liked this time of year best of all. The gardens spread around the yard were in full bloom. The multitude of flowers cast their fragrant smells in the air. In the daylight hours the butterflies and bees danced from one flower to another. Birds dashed around the feeders placed in many places around the yard.
Amber rubbed her arms to chase away the chill, she glanced to the east to see the full moon rising above the trees, a hunter’s moon to many walks of life. She twisted in her chair to see Orion on his never-ending chase of Leo low in the western sky. Amber stood and went to stand at the railing, gazing up to the stars. Pinpointing many of the constellations that could be seen that weren’t dimmed by the bright light of the moon.
So many nights as she grew up, Amber would lay under the same stars with her father and Thomas, pointing out the wonders of the night sky or gazing through the telescope at the planets and the mountains and craters on the moon. Those times were special to all of them.
"You remind me of your mother standing in the moonlight."
Amber gasped and spun around. "Daddy...what are...don’t sneak up on me like that."
Joe chuckled softly and moved closer to her. "Sorry baby, didn’t mean to startle you."
"Yes you did." Amber smiled and smacked his arm.
"What are you out here thinking about?" Joe put his arm around her shoulder and drew her closer.
"Lot of things. All the times we spent...the three us or with mum...lying out here looking up at the stars. Chased each other or just sat around talking."
"Those were some fun times, but we still do them too."
"Do you still miss her?" Amber blurted after a long pause.
Joe glanced at his daughter. Taking her hand in his, giving it a gentle squeeze. "I will always miss your mother."
"Me too." Amber replied softly. "Sometimes I get the feeling that mum is here, watching over us." She met his eyes. "Have you every felt that?"
"All the time." Joe smiled at her. "Mum will always be with us baby, whether in spirit or in our hearts and mind."
Amber looked back out over the dark landscape. "I never thought her accident was an accident. Mum was always such a careful driver, even when we were in the car. She always took that curve going down the mountain so carefully. Then to just lose control like that one day..." Her words trailed off.
Joe squeezed his only daughters shoulder, pulling her closer. "I really never thought about it like that. Back then, I was so grief stricken to even take care of you and Thomas. But we will never know if it was an accident or not. Even now it will be to painful to open that part of our past."
"I know." Amber leaned her head on his shoulder. "I want to find a relationship like you and mum had."
"You will."
"I thought it was, when I was with Nick."
Joe scoffed at the mention of him. "You could always try it again with him, maybe this time it’ll work out."
Amber looked at him, then shrugged her shoulders. "Never thought I would hear you say that."
Joe scratched his head. "Me either."
"I still love him, and I’m sure he feels the same. Love was never our problem."
"He didn’t take your threat to heart did he?"
"Guess not and Nick still abuses Sav whenever it suits him. Why does Sav continue to let him do that?"
"I’ve asked myself that same question a thousand times and Sav too. We can’t change something that he doesn’t want to change."
Amber shook her head slowly. She’ll never understand Sav in that regards. "I was thinking of getting my own place in town."
"You don’t have to do that."
"Dad, I’ve been here since I left Jeremy, almost two years ago. I think I’ve over stayed my welcome."
"Nonsense, you can stay as long as you want. Besides...I like it when you’re here.
Regarding him a moment before going on to something else. "So what are you doing tonight?" Amber asked changing the subject again.
"Oh nothing much really....hunting."
"Ah yes, beautiful night for it." Amber smiled. "And just what are you hunting?"
Joe gave her a mischievous grin.
"Me."
Amber shrieked and spun her head at the deep voice. Her reflexes sprung into action and shoved a hovering Sav to the ground. "Why do you do that Richard?" she nearly yelled.
"Element of surprise." Sav chuckled as he jumped to his feet.
"Well I never....hope you get him good for that Dad."
"Oh I plan on it." Joe growled.
"You two are incorrigible." Amber huffed. "Well...what are you waiting for...go get him."
Joe quickly leaned forward and kissed her cheek. "See you later." He flew from the gazebo after Sav.
Amber laughed when Joe tackled him to the ground, pinning him beneath him. Sav bucked him off and flew deeper into the dark shadows.
Amber yelled after her father as he too disappeared. Shaking her head at their playfulness, Amber yelled goodnight and heard two muffled replies in different places. Crossing her arms against the cold in the air, she made her way back inside the house.
Evelyn was in the kitchen getting a drink of water when Amber walked through.
"They are at it again." She informed her.
"Hum...yes I know." Evelyn replied smiling.
"Goodnight." Amber called over her shoulder.
"Goodnight honey."
Amber made her way to her room and changed for bed. Kneeling beside her bed, she reached under and pulled out the metal strong box. Unlocking it with the key she had taken from the bedside table drawer. A family picture of the four of them lay on top. Picking it up she gazed at Rebecca, her mother a few minutes before laying it aside. She lifted several bottles of pills and dumped a few of each in her hand. Popping them in her mouth and chased them down with water. Putting all the items back in the box, Amber locked it and slid it back under the bed. Taking a deep breath she climbed in bed and waited for sleep to claim her.
