Chapter 2:
Zachary awoke not even two hours after he had endured another nightmare, the dull and irritating beeping of his alarm clock the culprit. He groaned softly and rolled over to shut off the annoying noise. He checked the clock. 7.00AM. He let out another sigh as he slowly got out of bed, grabbing his towel that hung on the end of his bed and heading straight towards his bathroom in his tiny apartment.
He turned the shower on, removed his clothes and stepped underneath the hot water. He smiled as the warm water rushed over his body, relaxing the tense muscles from not enough sleep. He lathered himself up in soap, closing his eyes for a moment as he felt the loofa scrub away the dirt on him. His eyes immediately snapped open when he heard the bathroom door open.
He stood completely still as he waited for another noise. He peered out of the shower curtain and saw the door standing wide open. He quickly rinsed off the soap that was still on his body, shut off the water and got out of the bathroom as quickly as he could.
He dressed quickly, and ducked into the bathroom for about a minute as he quickly brushed his teeth. He grabbed the briefcase that was sitting on the kitchen bench and headed out the door, not taking another look into his apartment.
He made sure the door was locked before he walked to the elevator and made his way to his car. He didn't know what it was about that apartment, but there was something that made him feel very uncomfortable most of the time. It didn't help the odd noises or random doors opening when there was no one around. But there was no way he believed in that stupid paranormal bullshit.
The elevator dinged when it hit the bottom floor of his apartment complex. He exited the lift quickly and headed to where his car was parked. He unlocked his door and climbed in and started up the ignition. He pulled out of the small tenants’ parking lot and drove to his work. He knew that he was at least an hour early before he was due to begin work, but he also knew that before at work earlier then he was supposed to was a helluva lot better then being at home.
He made his way to his work in a relatively short amount of time and easily found a park in the large employee area. He put the car into park, pulled the handbrake on and shut off the ignition before taking a long, deep breath. He pulled out his phone from his briefcase to check the time and grumbled. It was only 7.55AM.
After a few moments, he exited the car, making sure he locked it, and headed towards the Starbucks that was right next door to his work. He sat in there for almost an hour, eating breakfast and drinking his usual double strength morning cup of coffee before he finally made his way into work.
As he arrived at his office cubicle, he noticed that the man who was in the cubicle next to his wasn't there yet. He sat down at his desk, placing the coffee next to the computer keyboard and pulled the first part of his work for the day out of his tray and began his work day fifteen minutes early.
A few minutes after he began typing, the other man who was in the cubicle next to his arrived. He looked over Zachary for a moment before commenting, “You're a bit keen today, aren't you Zack?”
Zachary stopped typing for a moment to look at the other man. “There’s nothing better to do.” He shrugged. “Besides Matt, you’re the only one I talk to in this office anyway.”
Matt smiled as he went to sit down at his desk. “Well maybe you should get out there and talk to the other people we work with.” He grinned at Zack, his dimples popping out as he spoke.
Zack turned around to give him a look, and Matt noticed how tired he was. “Please, I barely have time for myself, let alone socializing.” Zack grumbled, taking a sip of his coffee.
“Dude, you look awful.” Matt said plainly to which Zack cocked an eyebrow up at him. “No, I don’t mean to be rude, but you look like you haven’t slept in about a week.”
“Well, I haven’t really.” Zack said nonchalantly.
“Are you STILL having that dream?”
Zack sighed. Matt was, aside from his ex-girlfriend, the only person that he had told about the nightmare that was plaguing his life. Now he wished he hadn’t because all Matt did was ask him about it. He wished when Matt had asked why he was looking so tired that he’d just say he’d had “trouble sleeping” or something other then the truth. But he did and there was definitely nothing he could do now.
“Yeah.” Zack answered.
“I think I know what could help.” Matt said after a moment’s pause.
Zack looked at him skeptically for a moment, “I seriously doubt it.”
“No, hear me out.” Matt said. “I remember having these awful nightmares a few years ago. So one night I went out and got completely hammered and haven’t had another one since.” He grinned proudly.
Zack sighed. “I’m not really a drinker.”
“Zack, come on man. It’s one night and you never have to do it again.” Matt’s reasoned with him, and Zack had started to believe that maybe it was a good idea.
“Maybe I can do it once.” Zack said quietly after a few minutes.
“A few of us from work usually go out after we finish. You should come tonight.” Matt’s smile was so wide it was nearly vertical.
Zack took a deep breath. “Yeah, okay. Sounds good.”
------
By the time 5PM rolled around, Zack was nearly itching with excitement. He had no idea why he was so excited about tonight, but it may have had something to do with how enthusiastic Matt was being. In truth, it had been so long since he’d been out to a bar that he could barely remember what it was like.
Zack turned off his computer and packed up his things into his briefcase. He could see out of the corner of his eye that Matt was hurriedly finishing what he was doing and by the time Zack had finished, so had he. “You ready?” Matt grinned.
Zack nodded and followed the much larger man out of the office. It wasn’t until they got to the elevator that they finally spoke to each other. “Where are we going anyways?” Zack asked curiously.
“It’s called Dusk.” Matt answered. “The prices there are pretty cheap, so that’s why we go there and it’s just around the corner.”
The pair exited the elevator as it hit the bottom floor and both walked over to their car’s, throwing their briefcases onto the passenger seat and putting their wallets in their back pockets, before they set off out of the car park and to the bar. Zack glanced up at the sky as they walked, the sun starting to set on the west. He smiled; it was a beautiful night.
The walk to the bar took less then five minutes and as soon as he stepped in, Zack was captivated by the inside. He followed Matt right up to the bar itself where one other person was sitting. Matt sat down next to the rather small man, who had short, shaven brown hair and Zack could see a few tattoos poking out on his neck from under his business shirt. Despite his small size, however, Zack felt very intimidated and nervous around this man.
“Hey man, how’s it goin’?” Matt said casually as he planted himself on the bar stool that looked very inadequate compared to his size.
“Been better.” The other man grumbled, his voice slightly hoarse. “Who’s this?” He gestured to Zack who was still standing awkwardly behind Matt’s stool.
“This is Zack. Zack, this is Johnny. He works down in payroll.” Matt smiled at him before turning back to the other man.
Zack reached out his hand to shake Johnny’s, who reluctantly returned the gesture. “Hurry up and sit your ass down.” Johnny smiled at Zack, who promptly sat down on the vacant stool next to Matt. “What’re ya drinkin’?” He grinned at Zack, taking another sip of his beer.
“I’ll probably just have some beer.” Zack replied, turning away from the other two to survey what was behind the bar.
“Nope. Beer’s for pussies.” Matt spoke up, earning a hard glare from Johnny. “We’re doing the hard stuff tonight.”
“I dunno…” Zack trailed off.
“Oh come on Zack. Harden up.” Johnny grinned, to which Matt laughed. “Three shots of Tequila, bartender.”
“Comin’ right up.” The bartender smiled and poured them three shots, placing one in front of each of them.
“Okay, guys. On three” Matt grinned, encouraging the other two to pick up their shots. “One. Two. Three!”
The three of them drank their shots before slamming the empty glasses on the bench. “How’d you like that Zacky?” Matt grinned.
“I forgot what it tasted like.” Zack giggled.
“Ease up there, turbo.” Matt grinned. “We’ve got a big night of drinking ahead.”
---
After a long night of drinking, which involved far too much alcohol, Zack managed to stumble out of the bar, into a taxi and make his way back to his tiny apartment. He giggled as he tried a few times in vain to get into his apartment, eventually winning the war with his key and shutting his door with a quick snap.
He didn’t even bother taking off his clothes as he stumbled through his apartment and collapsed face down on his bed. It took only a few moments before he could feel sleep take him.
His eyes shot wide open as he looked around what could only be described as a dungeon. He could see streaks of blood across the brick floor and could hear the tortured screams coming from another room. He gulped. He hoped that he wasn’t next.
There was a loud boom noise and the door immediately to the right opened, the other side hitting the brick well right next to where his head just was. Out walked three men. The first he knew was Synyster, there was no way he could not have recognized him, his black, dead eyes surveying the room while his lip curled up in and evil smirk.
His breathing hitched when he saw the other two men. The taller one was identical to Matt in facial features except for the eyes, which were dead and black, like Synyster’s. His arms were bulging with muscles and wrapped in numerous tattoos.
The third man was short in stature and identical to Johnny, except for the dead black eyes. His attitude was worse then ever and he was very fearful of him. He was silently hoping that they hadn’t noticed him.
Synyster ran his hand through his hair. “This is taking far too long.” He muttered. “We should have him by now.”
“His will is too strong.” The man identical to Matt spoke in a harsh voice that was so unlike his in real life. “He will not give in without a fight.”
“That’s what you’re supposed to be doing Shadows.” Synyster growled. “You are supposed to be bending his will to conform to me but all you’re doing is befriending him. Pathetic.” He spat, glaring harshly at Shadows.
Shadows tried to speak, “I’m sorry-” but his words were cut short by a hard slap across the face.
“Sorry is not good enough!” Synyster yelled, causing the other two men to wince slightly. “Our father grows impatient with our slow work.”
“Then do it yourself.” Shadows spoke softly, immediately regretting it.
Synyster waved his hand and in an instant, Shadows’ heavy body had been lifted off the ground and slammed up against one of the hard walls. Synyster stepped over more closely, leaving three feet between the pair. He raised his hand, flattening it out, fingers pointing to the ceiling, he bent his head down forward, his eyes narrowing as he focused on nothing but the other man.
A loud yell filled the dungeon as Shadows started to scream, a blinding white light making its way from Synyster’s hand and wrapping itself around Shadows’ body, constricting more and more with every second that passed. Shadows started to splutter, his yells growing less and less in volume. Synyster dropped his hand and the light disappeared, Shadows began breathing again.
Synyster raised his hand again and slapped Shadows hard across the face, causing the other man to fall to the floor. Synyster reached down and entangled his fingers in the little hair the other man had on his head and yanked his head up so Shadows’ eyes were looking straight into his.
“Don’t you ever fucking talk to me like that again!” He raged, the walls themselves felt like they were shaking in fear. “I will fucking kill you the next time you talk to me like that!” He spat, letting go of the Shadows’ hair. He instead raised his foot and kicked him hard in the face.
Synyster strutted away from Shadows as he bled and coughed on the ground. He turned to look at the other man, who had not moved a step since they arrived in the room. “But you are right, Shadows.” Synyster’s drawling voice spoke, causing the man on the floor to look up at him. “Perhaps I should do this myself, since I have two fucking idiots as my workers.” He spat, glaring at the two. “Maybe it’s time I went to the surface.”
The shorter man gasped. “But surely our father would not allow it.”
“Our father would allow it, Christ” He spat at the shorter man. “Because unlike you two, he knows that I will get the job done the first time, not after twelve months of waiting.”
“We have been doing everything you have told us!” Shadows protested. “His will to fight is far too strong!”
“Exactly why I need to leave this place to retrieve him myself.” Synyster smirked.
“But you can’t leave Hell!” Christ protested.
“You have no fucking control over what I can and cannot do.” Synyster snarled at Christ, raising his hand and this time slapping the smaller man hard across the face. “Zachary Baker’s soul will be mine and I will not stop until it is!” His grinned turned pure evil as he looked exactly where Zack was standing.
Zack looked into the other man’s evil eyes for a moment before he squeezed his eyes shut. He reopened them a moment later to find he was once again back in his room, but was now lying on his back. He sat up and turned on the light.
He took a few, steady breaths as he ran his fingers through his hair. “What the fuck...”
