Part 2:
Brian woke early the next morning, unable to stand the obnoxious snoring and grunting coming from the other bunks around him. He quietly rolled out of his own bunk, and tiptoed through the door and to the front of the bus. He yawned as he took a seat on the uncomfortable couch and turned on the television, keeping the volume low as he channel surfed for something decent to watch.
He had barely slept at all last night. His thoughts were too preoccupied on Zack, hardly being able to get the sounds of hearing him vomit and then the repeated flushing of the toilet that followed. He felt helpless that he couldn’t do anything, he could barely say anything let alone do anything each time he heard it. It made him feel only a fraction better knowing that the rest of his band was in exactly the same position.
He turned as he heard the door to the bunk beds creek open. His eyes widened in shock as he saw Zack walking out, already dressed in exercise clothing. Zack’s eyes also widened in shock as he saw the other man sitting on the couch watching him.
“Just goin’ for a run.” Zack mumbled as he walked towards the door, his gaze dropping away from his friend’s.
“Are you going to eat first?” Brian asked bluntly, causing Zack’s normally placid green eyes to turn violent and angry instantly. “You should always eat before you exercise.”
“I’ll be fine.” Zack snapped; turning away from the other man and snatching open the front door, slamming it as he left.
Brian sighed as he rested his head in one of his hands, rubbing his temple with his thumb and index finger, feeling the annoying start of a headache coming. He honestly didn’t know what he could do. Zack had made it perfectly clear that he didn’t want help, despite the fact that he was in obvious need of it.
He was alone with his thoughts for barely a minute before he heard the sound of the door creaking open. He didn’t bother looking, knowing who it would be. “What’s with all the fuckin’ noise?” Jimmy asked as he yawned.
Brian lifted his head from his hands and looked at the lanky drummer. “Zack just left.”
“What the fuck did you do?” Jimmy asked, half-laughing, half-serious as he planted himself next to the lead guitarist on the couch.
“Told him he should eat before he exercises.” Brian answered with a shrug.
“Big fuckin’ mistake.” Jimmy said with a smug grin.
“How can you not take this seriously?” Brian snapped, his brown eyes narrowing to look into the blue eyes that looked back just as viciously.
“What am I supposed to do, Brian?” Jimmy spat back. “Force food down his throat and keep my eyes on him twenty-four hours a day so he doesn’t throw it back up?”
“Like I fuckin’ know.” Brian sighed as he stood up and walked the few steps to the small kitchenette, grabbing the largest granny smith apple in the fruit bowl and taking a large bite out of it.
He looked over at Jimmy, who had already set up camp on the small lounge, his arms propped up as he watched the small screen. He took a deep breath as he threw the apple core into the bin and left the kitchenette area and headed to the bunk area.
He dug into this suitcase and pulled out a pair of shorts, a singlet and a pair of socks. He quickly changed and headed out to the front area, pulling on an old pair of joggers.
“Where are you going?” Jimmy called to him.
“Gonna go for a run.” Brian answered as he opened the door on the bus and stepped out in the crisp air.
He shut the door quietly behind him as he started his warm up stretches. He warmed up for the next few minutes, doing his stretches and exercises, before he finally started running, deciding that today he would run to the West and do a loop back towards the bus.
He began running at a normal pace, swinging his arms as he felt the cool air whip at his face, invigorating his senses as he was spurred on to run faster. But he found himself almost falling over as he went around a bend and saw someone in the distance who looked a lot like Zack that was hunched over and looked like they were in pain.
He felt his stomach drop as he got closer and realized it was Zack that was on the path, tightly clutching his chest. “Zack!” Brian called out but the other man wouldn’t look up at him. “Zack! Are you alright?” He asked as he knelt down to the other man.
Zack looked up at Brian, his eyes were glazed over and he was much paler then usual. “I’m okay.” He managed to choke out; his breathing was still very ragged. “Just felt a little dizzy and had to sit down.”
Brian looked at him with nothing other then worry. “What’s wrong with your chest?”
“It hurts.” Zack whimpered.
“We’ve gotta get back to the bus, c’mon.” Brian said quickly as he stood up.
Zack shook his head. “I can’t.”
Brian reached down and pulled the smaller man up to his feet. “I’m not taking no for an answer, c’mon.”
Zack merely nodded and stayed silent as he walked slowly next to Brian, still clutching at his chest. He had no idea why it hurt so much but he knew things would only get harder now that Brian had found him and was forcing him to go back to the bus with him.
The pair reached the bus and Brian opened the door, all but shoving his band mate into the cramped front area where their other three members sat together, eating breakfast. Zack turned back to look at the other guitarist, who was glaring slightly at him and told him one word, “sit”.
Zack sat nervously on the available chair, feeling the intense gaze of the rest of his band mates watching his every move very carefully. He looked up just in time to see Brian dump a big bowl of sugary cereal swimming in full fat milk right in front of him.
“Eat.” Brian said commandingly while Zack shot him a pathetic look. “Now!”
Zack sighed as he cautiously picked up the silver spoon and dipped it into the bowl, scooping out some contents before he put it in to his mouth. He held the food in his mouth for a few moments, feeling repulsed by the taste of something so sugary in his mouth.
“Swallow it.” Brian said in an assertive tone, much to the confusion of his other band mates. He smiled slightly when he heard the audible sound of Zack gulping down his food. “Good.”
“Brian, what the fuck are you doing?” Matt snapped at him.
Brian turned his head to look at his singer. “What am I doing?” He said, half-amused. “Zacky refused to eat before exercising this morning and after I found him hunched over on a bend not far from here, I am forcing him to eat something.”
“It was nothing.” Zack said quietly, spoon perched in his hands as he stared at his bowl.
“You told me your chest was hurting!” Brian exclaimed, perhaps a little louder then he would have liked after he saw Zack flinch at the noise. “You need to realize that you have to eat!”
“Brian, stop.” Jimmy said quietly, seeing the anger welling up inside of the rhythm guitarist.
“No.” Brian spat as he placed both of his hands on the table and stared Zack directly in the eyes, their brown and green eyes locking in a fierce battle for dominance. “I am not moving until you’ve finished that bowl.”
Zack’s eyes narrowed as he dropped his spoon and lifted the large bowl up and poured it over Brian’s head. “Don’t you dare fuckin’ tell me what I have to do! Keep your nose out of shit that doesn’t concern you!” He screamed as he slammed the bowl back onto the table and stood up, bravely looking Brian directly in the eyes as the larger man was visibly shaking from anger. “Leave me ALONE!” He snarled before storming back into the bunk area, slamming the door on his way through.
“I give up!” Brian yelled, batting the ceramic bowl onto the floor of the bus, which made a shrill noise as it smashed. “Maybe I should just be fuckin’ ignorant like the rest of you! Because what’s the point in trying to care about someone who doesn’t want to be cared about!” He snapped as he reached for his packet of cigarettes and headed for the bus door. “Hope you heard that, you ungrateful fuck!” He yelled through the bunk area to Zack before he slammed the bus door shut and lit up one of his delicious cigarettes.
He was alone barely a minute before he saw the drummer’s lanky body coming out of the bus door and standing next to him as he leaned against the bus. “What?” He snapped.
“You’re not even going to offer me one? You’ve changed.” Jimmy said with that little smirk he always had.
Brian groaned and pulled one of the long, white cigarettes from the packet and handed it to the drummer, who lit it up immediately. “You're welcome.” He said shortly as he exhaled a breath of smoke.
“None of us appreciated what you said in there.” Jimmy said as he took a long drag from the cigarette.
Brian turned to look at his best friend, eyes narrowing as he took another long drag. “Well, it would be nice to have some support from you three.”
“If there was something I could be doing to help him, I would be.” Jimmy responded shortly, taking another long drag. “I feel just as helpless as you, Matt and Johnny do.”
“Somebody’s got to help him.” Brian tried to reason.
“He doesn’t want to be helped.” Jimmy answered.
“I know.” Brian sighed as he took another long drag from his cancer stick. “But that doesn’t mean I’m going to give up on him.”
“I think he’ll grateful for that one day.” Jimmy said solemnly.
Brian didn’t say anything as he stubbed out his cigarette before he pulled out another one of the addictive, white sticks, offering another to the drummer who politely accepted. The pair stayed silent as they both got lost into their own thoughts.
Brian had no idea what his next move was going to be.
