CHAPTER TWO
“Hello.”
He looked up at the voice, away from his drink which had long since become weak from the melted ice. He gave a small smile.
“Hello.”
The man smiled. He was much taller than he was, even from his seated position. He had spiked dark hair, a wicked pout and distinctly bedroom eyes. He couldn’t tell what colour they were, due to the light in the club, but he guessed them to be light, perhaps. The man was lanky, almost painfully thin, but just this side of slender. And if he wasn’t mistaken….. was he wearing lipgloss? He wore black leathers, a black mesh shirt and boots. The shirt was almost too sheer, just this side of obscene. He could see two tattoos on one arm, arms that tapered down to large but graceful looking hands, long fingers with nails painted in black and adorned with various silver rings.
He had a sudden urge to have those hands touch him.
“My name is Jay.”
“Really?” He pretended to sound bored, because he was fascinated by this…this….apparition was the only word he could think of. Like a wraith or something, only with form and flesh. “Nice.”
He grinned. “I’ve seen you perform.” Without asking, He sat down across from him. “I miss seeing you at Venice pier.”
He raised a brow. “Yeah?”
He nodded. “I used to go there and see you all the time.” He sat back. “Though I guess acting pays more.” His voice was teasing and slightly deep and sleepy sounding. He didn’t knoy thy that didn’t alert his usual defensive senses, but instead alerted the wrong parts of his senses. The ones that activated when he wanted someone.
“Yeah, a bit.”
“Buy you a drink?”
He shrugged. “Sure.” He waved over a waitress and told her the order, then looked back at Joaquin.
“Thanks. I owe ya.”
“Don’t worry. You’ll pay me back later.”
He raised his brow. //What does he mean by that?// “So, Jay,” he started. “What brings you over here?”
“You, of course,” he said with a light chuckle.
Joaquin smiled back. “That is the worst line I’ve heard all night.”
“The night’s young.”
The drinks arrived and the waitress took away his half-empty glass, then set the two drinks down. He picked it up and took a sip, looking back at Jay. “So Jay….what do you do?”
“I used to sing, but now I manage a few groups around town. Me and a friend of mine. He runs a club in West L.A., maybe you’ve heard of it? Mass Destruction?”
He nodded- it was borderline seedy/trendy goth/industrial/electronica/rave club that had been around for a while. It was always packed, near as he could recall. He’d gone a couple of times, but couldn’t remember ever seeing this man there, though he definitely looked like a club goer. “Yeah, been there a few times.”
Jay smiled again. “I’m actually on my way there….maybe you’d like to come?”
He drank more of his drink. //Definitely a come on.// “Nah, no thanks.”
“You sure?,” he asked, raising an arched brow even higher. “It promises to be good tonight- it’s an all weekend rave.”
//Damn…haven’t been to rave n months.// With all the work on his movie, he hadn’t had much time for going out, apart from this weekend. He shrugged. “Okay, why not, this place is dead anyways.”
Jay smiled, and if he’d been paying attention, he would thatthat it was less friendly and more predatory. “Great, I’ll go get my car, and meet you out front.”
He nodded back and Jay got up from the table. He watched his long form disappear into the crowd and he shook his head.
“Quin, you just got hit on, picked up and didn’t stop it,” he said out loud to himself. “You must be burnt.” He chuckled, then got up from the table and eased his way through the crowd, stopping only to say a few words here and there. The smokiness and bland music of the club was shut out as he exited. He paused at the curb, watching the traffic of cars and people go by. He ran a hand through his hair and exhaled. A set of lights belonging to a car pulled over to the curb and a window lowered.
“Hop in,” Jay said, unlocking the doors. He climbed in and closed the door. Jay pulled out and into traffic. The cd player was cranking an old Cult cd and he sat back with a smile.
“Hope you don’t mind the music,” he said, weaving through traffic.
Joaquin waved the comment away. “Nah, it’s great. I like this Cult cd.”
Jay grinned, looking at him. “Yeah…I figured you might.”
“You did, huh?,” Joaquin said with a chuckle. “Are you a mind reader too?”
He shook his head, coming to a stop at a red light. “Just figured you would.”
“Well, you figured right.”
“Thought I would. Tell me, Joaquin….what’s it like? To act, I mean.”
“It’s a job, nothing more or less.”
“Bet people ask that a lot.”
“Eh, comes with the territory,” he replied, smiling.
“Just….wondered what it must be like to have people wanting to kiss your ass all the time.”
“Boring as hell.”
Jay laughed. “Yeah, thought so.”
“You think a lot,” he cracked.
“Not as much as you’d think. Most of the time I’m just…. Impulsive. A bit spontaneous.”
“That’s cool, too.”
“Guess you could say I was not quite normal.”
“Not many interesting people are.”
He gave Joaquin a small smile and a pointed gaze from the corner of his eye. “You’re so right. Normal is boring….and so is innocence.”
“Yeah, like you were ever innocent,” he cracked, then laughed. “Who is innocent these days?”
Jay refrained from saying out loud what he was thinking. //You, of all people, should know about innocence. Pretty innocent thing you are.// Jay know that despite outward worldly appearances, this one was still ignorant and untouched. He didn’t even realize that even now.
He would after tonight.
