Chapter 20
On the drive to the grocery store Jodie filled them in on what she had experienced in the last few days. She was from Pictou County which was the next county over from the one they were currently driving in. They had heard about the riots in Los Angeles and how the zombies were spreading across the US, the last she had heard they were in Toronto and Mexico City. Her family couldn't get on a plane to Europe and by the time they tried to get on a ship it was too late, a zombie had shown up in Bangor and it hadn't taken long before they were all over the place. Her mother lived in Dallas and they hadn't spoken for six years, her father called her before the phones went out and told her he was on his way home and to keep the doors locked til her got there, she had holed up with Lou, Lou's little brother Jeremy and their mother Jill. Jodie's dad had never come for them and soon they were out of water and food. They took Jill's car to look for supplies and were surrounded by the zombies who smashed in the windows and dragged Jill and Jeremy out, they didn't even have any weapons to help them...Jodie had taken Jill's spot behind the wheel and drove, just wanting to get away. It was Lou's idea to go to the gun store, the zombies there had surprised them as soon as they got out of the car, running from the rear of the building, Lou helped her climb up onto the roof of the shed and then Rob and the others drove up and saw the rest.
“Do you think there are any boats that could take us to Europe?” Brad asked.
“I don't know, all the big cargo ships already left. Could one of the smaller boats make it that far?” Jodie asked.
“Even if it could, none of us know how to navigate.” Brody said. Renee fiddled with the buttons on the radio, hoping they could get a signal somehow.
“What's the solution? We can't stay here. Do we go on a boat and risk sinking or getting lost and running out of supplies?” Josie asked them.
“I'd rather die out there, at least I won't be getting eaten by one of them.” Pompey gave his opinion.
“Me too.” Renee agreed.
“Maybe once we get off shore we can try a CB and get a bigger ship or even military....they have to have ships close by.” Brody thought out loud.
“But will they even help us?” Grace asked and no one could answer.
Jodie directed them to a grocery store she knew was nearby and they pulled into the parking lot. Markham's Grocery and Drug Store appeared to be abandoned; there were a few cars sitting with doors open and the windows broken out of them, shopping carts with groceries in bags laid on their sides. The doors to the grocery store stood open no lights on inside.
“Power in this area has been out for a couple of days.” Jodie said. There was no sign of any zombies outside the store they came up with a plan. Pompey would stay with the van, ready to drive as soon as the others exited the store, Grace would stay with him since she couldn't move quickly. Jodie was lifted up onto the van to be a lookout, at the first sign of any zombies she was to jump down and into the van, Brody gave her a shotgun and a quick lesson, basically telling her to point and shoot if she had too. That left, Brody, Rob Renee, Brad and Josie to do the shopping. Before they went inside they mapped out a grocery list.
“We need proteins and vitamins to live. I say we get as much canned meat, beans and canned fruit as we can. As well as water and maybe several bottles of multi vitamins.” Renee suggested.
“Power bars too. They are packed with everything you need.” Rob added.
“Those canned stews are pretty good too. They have everything you need in them.” Brad chimed in.
“We may not have time to load the van so we need to have everything ready to go before we leave the store.” Rob thought out loud. “We can't just throw stuff into the cart.”
“Right, we take some boxes from the store and put everything into the boxes as we go. Rob and Josie will be in charge of getting the food off the shelves and into the boxes, Renee, Brad and myself with cover you. We should grab some powdered milk and juices. They might not taste the best but we will be needing variety.” Brody planned.
“Alright our list is, canned meats, stews, beans, vegetables and fruits, power bars, powdered juices and milk and vitamins. We should also take anything from the pharmacy section we will need for first aid, bandages, antiseptics, antibiotics, feminine products.” Josie blushed at the final mention.
“We are going to need that stuff Josie, don't be embarrassed.” Brody gave his approval to her. “We'll need sunscreen too if we are going onto the open ocean. Get lots of that. Toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant couldn't hurt.”
“Anything else?” Josie asked. No one could think of anything else so they all picked up their guns and got out of the van.
As quickly and as quietly as they could they went inside, Rob and Josie each grabbed a cart from the front of the store and then grabbed some empty boxes that were provided for customer's groceries, and they made their way through the store, not talking at all, the only sound was the cans as they moved against one another. Once they had all the canned products that were on the shelf they made their way to get the power bars where Rob just picked up the whole boxes off the shelf and placed them in the cart. He even reached up onto the top of the shelf and took whatever full cases were stored up there as well. They took several 10 litre jugs of water and a few cases of single bottles of water and headed for the juice aisle where they got several bags of powdered milk and juice and headed for the pharmacy. On the way they passed the chocolate bars, Rob paused momentarily and threw in all the Mars bars they had as well as most of the other types.
“Sorry...I've got a sweet tooth.” He apologized and then moved on to get the things they needed in the pharmacy. The took all the different sized bandages and medical tape, three boxes of antiseptics, most of the Aspirin and Tylenol and some allergy and cold medication, vitamins and then grabbed huge containers of penicillin, codeine and a few others that they knew where antibiotics. Josie grabbed several boxes of tampons and feminine pads and even took some condoms off the shelf and put them in the cart. Brody shot her a look but nodded his approval...they didn't know what would happen and it stood a good chance some of them would be sleeping together before long. They left the store and loaded up the van, all without encountering anyone or anything. It had taken them less then 30 minutes and they all squeezed around the groceries with Rob cheerfully handing out chocolate bars. Their next stop was the harbor front.
