She’d been worried about Wil since he left.
He must have been tired, and hungry, and why was he so dirty?
So many thoughts went around her mind, stupid thoughts …
But are they stupid? What is he hiding from me?
Her clock struck 10 am, and she looked at it, staring, hoping it was going to give her all the answers. But, of course, it didn’t. It just made her wonder about the time she’s wasting, just sitting there thinking. She knew she couldn’t just sit there and let time get away from her.
After all, it was nearly Christmas.
She got up and showered, suddenly feeling good about the day.
Stepping out of her building into the mid-morning Seattle rush, she noticed just how much she’d been missing. Seattle had been getting ready for Christmas right under her nose, and she hadn’t even realised. Decorations adorned the buildings high above the streets, jolly Saint Nick’s and reindeers looked down over the people, flashing and grinning. It was like someone had slapped her in the face and said, “Happy Christmas!”
Kids walked down the street, dragging their parents into the high street shops, calling them over to the new doll that they just had to have, or to the jewellery shops where the 13 going on 30 would ask for the most expensive diamond necklace in the store. She couldn’t remember ever doing that with her parents, but she was privileged for what they could afford. She never really went without. She didn’t go without clothes, food, water; she’d go without hugs and kisses and “how was your day?”s, but not food or water or clothes.
She knew she should be grateful – it’s not like her parents were rich.
But then, why do you have to be rich to love your child?
Alyn would never understand it, and knew she’d never get any answers. She knew that she probably just wasn’t special enough to love, that’s why no one does. Maybe that’s why she is thinking about Wil all the time. She knows she had to have been desperate to talk to him – he was running away from the police, dirty and smelly, he could have been dangerous. But she invited him into her home regardless, she gave him access to everything she had, she may as well have invited him to rob her blind. But she needed someone, and he literally fell into her lap. He felt like the answer to her prayers; she didn’t want to let him go. She knew he probably didn’t feel the same for her; there was no reason he should. She just wanted him in her life and that was that. Love to her was exactly this – wanting someone to love you back knowing they never will. Love was one-sided; it was an emotion that was never shared by the person you wanted it to be shared with. You can love someone with all your heart but it doesn’t work out, that’s what she thought. Love just isn’t enough sometimes. And she was afraid that she would never know what enough is. And she was afraid that sooner or later Wil would see that she wasn’t enough for him – and he would go.
Well, that’s if he comes back. She’d failed him already.
I should know what’s happening. He shouldn’t have to explain it. He should trust me enough but I’m obviously just not trustworthy.
She didn’t think that she loved him. She just needed him. Although, need can sometimes be just as bad as love. And she thought of that old saying, ‘Love is like a butterfly – hold on to it too tightly and you suffocate it, hold on to it too loosely and you let it go.’
She sighed as she stopped by a shop window, looking at the Christmas decorations displayed.
I was never any good with bugs.
