Chapter 20
As the day was ending, he looked in on his sleeping fiancé and grinned. She was curled around a pillow sleeping soundly. He wondered how much longer she would sleep. He was hesitant to wake her, especially with all that’d happened in the past couple of weeks. She was exhausted. What mattered was that she was resting; she needed it.
He moved farther into the room and to the window, the shades where drawn closed to keep the sun from her eyes. However the sun was going down and a few traces of sunlight could enter the room. He moved the curtains aside and allowed the last rays of the sun to caress her face. She stirred and moved her arm over her face, groaning as the sun hit her in the eyes.
“ Okay, who was the dumb ass that left the shade open?” She mumbled sleepily.
Orlando moved towards the bed with a grin, “Sorry love, I didn’t expect it to be bright enough to wake you. But now that you are awake from your nap, you can have some dinner.” He sat on the edge and rubbed her burgeoning belly.
Cassy opened her eyes slowly, he was blocking most of the sun, and so she wasn’t completely blinded. She reached for her glasses and put them on. She stretched mightily and smiled,” So what’s for dinner? I’m starving.”
Orlando chuckled, “ I can tell, I can hear your stomach rumbling. I made a nice big Greek salad with lots of feta and black olives, just the way you like it. And there is also some nice chicken breast sliced if you’d like to add that to your salad. Oh and I also picked up a nice loaf of that rosemary bread. Will that do?”
“That sounds wondrous, my love. Thank you very much,” She pushed herself up and gave him a hug, along with a loud kiss on the cheek. “You are the most wonderful man on the face of the earth. Now let’s see if I can get out of bed without popping my knee out again.”
In the last few weeks as her knee healed, she’d noticed that her knee would pop out of alignment at the most inopportune times. It was not hugely painful, just annoying, but there wasn’t really anything that could be done…other then surgery. Cassy wasn’t going to do that. She still hated going to the hospital for anything.
Orlando stood up and helped Cassandra out of bed. He helped her into her robe and slippers, then out of the bedroom and downstairs to the large kitchen. She was able to make it by herself most of the time. He knew she hated the knee brace, but he was insistent that she wore it. She had taken it off earlier that afternoon before she went upstairs to shower and just as she had been getting out of the shower, her knee had gone out from under her. She’d let out a shriek and grabbed the towel bar and the shower door to prevent from going down. Orlando, who had been in the bedroom putting his laundry away, came at a run. He’d helped her out of the bathroom and into bed. He had grumbled the entire time while tucking her in, until she had kicked him out of their bedroom to let her rest.
They made their way into the welcoming kitchen; he helped her to sit at the table, and then gave her a kiss. The table had already been set and the bread was ready to be cut. Orlando got the salad and chilled chicken breast from the refrigerator; along with the dressing he’d mixed earlier. He set the large salad filled bowl and dressing on the table.
“This looks so good, honey. Thank you for making dinner tonight. I really appreciate it.” Cassy said as he sat down across the table from her. She served herself some salad while he sliced the bread. They ate dinner and talked about their upcoming trip; they also talked about names for the babies. It was an on-going conversation, which almost took up all of their conversations. Cassandra had gone on-line many times in search of the right names.
She’d found out the week before that she was supposed to have a boy and a girl. Deanna had been with her at the appointment, because Orlando had an emergency at the hospital. Cassy was so excited about it, that she’d almost called him on his cell phone. Then she remembered that he wouldn’t have had the phone on. So she’d waited patiently with Deanna at home. Deanna and Missy had kept her company; while they ate some wonderful chocolates that Dee had brought with her from her last business trip to Switzerland.
When Orlando had returned from the hospital, he’d found them on the couch surrounded by wrappers and the room had smelled like a chocolate factory. Cassy had looked a little green around the gills and Dee had looked like she was about to bounce off the walls. Deanna had bounded to her feet and gave Orlando an all-encompassing hug of joy. Then she’d spilled the beans before Cassy could’ve opened her mouth. Of course she had been forgiven, but Cassandra was still a little upset with her about that.
After they finished their meal, Orlando cleaned the kitchen while Cassy sat on the couch in the living room. The leather furniture that had been there before had been replaced with soft and comfy furniture. The colors were still soft, muted earth tones, but with a few jewel tones thrown in. And the ivory tusks had gone with Deanna, which didn’t bother Cassy in the slightest. Cassy watched the evening news and waited for Orlando to join her. It was their nightly ritual, to watch the news together and talk. Their relationship was comfortable and loving, but in the back of Cassy’s mind she wondered if something would happen. She still worried about Marilyn. Would she continue to leave them alone? Or would she strike out of nowhere?
Across town in the snug trailer Marilyn called home, she stood in front of her mirror. She preened and smoothed imaginary wrinkles from her pink silk blouse and sleek black pants. She wanted to make an impression on her new psychiatrist. The previous one had apparently left his position due to the stresses of the job. She thought that rather strange, but he was human. Maybe he couldn’t handle the complexity of her mind, she thought.
She had been forced to see a psychiatrist until the court thought she was deemed safe enough to be with out one. She was glad that she hadn’t been put in jail or made to wear one of those silly contraptions around her ankle. She wasn’t stupid enough to get caught doing anything wrong again. The police were keeping an eye on her but she knew how to get around that. Unfortunately the man she’d hired to take care of “The Cow” had fingered her as his benefactor. But she’d managed to get out of that because she’d made sure there were no witnesses and no paper trail of their transaction.
She smiled as she slipped into her black, high-heeled boots. She couldn’t wait until summer, and then she could wear those gorgeous sling backs that she had found at the shoe store. But the boots looked good with the outfit also. She fluffed her hair on last time, and then left her bedroom in search of her heavy winter coat and scarf. A few minutes later she was ready to go, she grabbed her purse and keys, then set off.
Meanwhile….
Orlando dried his hands on a dishcloth hanging from the oven handle, then made his way into the living room. He sat next to Cassy and gave her a gentle kiss on her cheek. She seemed a little distracted, like there was something bothering her. He knew that if she wanted to tell him she would, but his concern for her outweighed his hesitancy.
“Cassy, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing really, just thinking about Marilyn and for the life of me, I don’t know why.”She answered without looking at him, which Orlando thought was strange, because when she spoke to someone, she always gave him or her the courtesy of looking at them.
Casey wasn’t sure why she was so worried; surely Marilyn had learned her lesson. But for some reason there was a little niggle of worry in the back of mind. She just had a felling that Marilyn was up to something. She didn’t seem the type to just give up on something she wanted so badly.
