I had to stay in the hospital for a few days of observation. During that time everyone came to see me. Well, almost everyone. The last two who’d come into my room just before the pain in my head made me pass out did not come to visit. For some reason I didn’t feel the need to ask about them or ask that they do come to visit. But there was one person I did want to see often.
“Saika?”
“Hmm?” She was standing by the window, re-arranging the pretty flowers she’d brought me in a vase. The sky outside was a lovely blue and the sun felt warm on my skin where it touched me. It also made her ebony hair glisten.
I’d been poking around at my food, not really hungry. “What will happen now?”
She left the flowers, turning towards me, and sitting on the foot of the bed. A smile curled her lips, and she took the chopsticks away from me. “You get to go home today. Kaoru said he’d come get us. Mama and I agreed that I’ll stay with you at your place. We can watch the dramas you liked, and listen to the music you liked, and we’ll look at photos of us growing up.”
She was trying to feed me since I wasn’t eating myself, but I pushed the chopsticks down, grimacing. “I’m not hungry. The food here tastes weird.” I liked her. I felt that she meant something strong to me. Best friends. Like sisters. That’s what she’d told me. I could believe it. When she was around I felt… almost whole. “Kaoru-san? He’ll come get us?”
She was nodding as she removed the tray. “Yes. He should be here soon, actually. How ‘bout I help you get dressed and I fix your hair?”
I felt warmth at the thought that Kaoru, the one with the warm face, was going to be here soon. “Okay.” Something about him made me want to just… continuously press myself against him in a hug and let him just hold me. It was odd. Like the safest place, the place I felt the most secure and warm, was in his arms. Could I tell Saika that? She said we always used to confide in each other. “Saika? Can I tell you something?”
“Always,” she was setting my clothes on the bed, clothes she’d brought from my home. “What is it?”
“Is it odd that I always want to hug Kaoru? It makes me feel… safe.” I tilted my head, eyeing her curiously. I was blushing. I knew I was because the heat of it crept up my neck and face. “It is, isn’t it?”
She was considering that. “Actually, no, it’s not weird.” She smiled, nodding as she spoke. “Kaoru is the one we always ran to when we were little and someone hurt us. He’s the best older brother. Okay, he can get overly protective and annoy the hell out of me at times, but he’s a good guy. In a way they all are. They always watched over us. Still do. So it’s natural you’re drawn to that protectiveness.”
Ah, that made sense!
“And he does give good hugs,” she added with a chuckle.
The door opened slightly, and Kaoru poked his head in. “Excuse me for intruding!” he called. He smiled at us. “I’m here. Ready to go home, little Suji-chan?”
I nodded, beaming. “Hai!”
Saika snorted. “First let’s get you dressed. Kaoru, get out.”
“I’ll go finish up the paperwork and speak to the doctor before we go. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” He shut the door as he disappeared.
During that time I changed clothes, and brushed my teeth. Saika then made me sit and brushed my hair. Something about that felt comforting and I shut my eyes, sighing happily. A fragmented but bright image of two little girls sitting there with one brushing the other’s hair popped into my head, and I gasped.
“Oh! Did I pull your hair? I’m sorry,” Saika stopped brushing my hair.
“No, no! I’m fine. Saika, I think I remembered us as girls!” I excitedly told her.
She inhaled sharply. “Really? What did you remember?”
“Two little girls sitting on the floor, one was brushing the other’s hair.” I tried to bring the image back, to see if there was anything else I could tell her. “The one doing the brushing has a t-shirt on that has sakura blossoms on it.”
She laughed. “Oh man, you wore that tee until there was nothing left of it! You love sakura blossoms.”
The door opened, and Kaoru popped his head in again. “Everything’s set. I’ll carry the bags out to the car.” He entered and came to the bed. With a smile on his face he reached out and gave me a gentle little chuck beneath my chin with a hand, and then took the bags and left the room.
Before long we were on our way. Saika sat in back, letting me sit in front beside Kaoru since she knew he made me feel warm and safe. I was watching the scenery, not really thinking of anything, just kind of half dozing in my seat when another image popped into my head. It was Kaoru, driving, and I was sitting beside him laughing and admiring his profile. Blinking I turned my head to look at him. He did have a handsome profile.
Kaoru glanced at me, and arched a brow. “What?”
I tilted my head some, and smiled. “I just noticed that you’re handsome.”
Saika laughed. Kaoru snorted. “Just noticed, huh?” His chest puffed out, and he grinned. “I’ve always been handsome. Handsomest in the family,” he teased, and winked playfully.
Saika snorted. “I don’t think looks have been a problem for any of you. I’m blessed with having five gorgeous brothers… or so every female aged 2 to 200 tells me.”
“You are definitely blessed,” he nodded. “I only wish you’d remember that more often, and show your gorgeous brothers a little more respect.”
She snorted once more. “I do show respect. I just also show irritation, annoyance, and frustration.”
“Not to mention ticked off-ness,” I nodded. Then I blinked. “Oh! How did I know that?”
Kaoru reached over and gave my hand a small squeeze of encouragement. “You’re slowly remembering. Just don’t rush it, Suji-chan. It will all come back to you in time.”
………………………
Kaoru carried the bags and Saika the flowers. I let my gaze pass over the area, feeling a very strong sense of elusive familiarity. Kind of like when you see an actor in something, and you know you’ve seen them elsewhere, but you can’t place who they are, or where you saw them. I knew this place, but I couldn’t quite figure it out. They opened the gate to my house, but I turned and faced the house across the street. I could almost hear childish laughter and see two little girls and a little boy running from that house towards the fields out beyond the town.
“Suji?” Saika worriedly called.
Turning back I smiled. “Coming!” I laced my arm through hers, and we followed Kaoru into the house. Once inside I peered around. “This seems familiar…” I started up the stairs, and turned into one of the bedrooms. I smiled at the cream wallpaper with pale blush pink sakura blossoms. “My room, I gather?”
Kaoru put the bags on the bed. Just about then his cell rang, and he excused himself and answered. “Hello? Ah, Mama… yeah, we just got in.” He glanced at me, and then went to the window. “Okay, no problem. Thanks, Mama.” Hanging up he sighed heavily. “Okay, Mama’s sending over food. She’s sending Kyo and Shinya over with it. I have to go.”
I moved to the window seat, but glanced at him. “So soon?”
“Only for a bit. Mama knows that Saika is staying here with you, but she’s volunteered me to stay too.” He glanced at Saika briefly, and I wondered what the unspoken message was that passed between them? “I’ll be back after I get some stuff together.”
I looked out. “I see them coming with the food now.”
Saika nodded. “I’ll go help them. Why don’t you unpack, and I’ll bring something to eat up for us.” She headed down the stairs. “Mama thinks Die or Toshiya will try to see her?”
He nodded. “I’ll be sleeping down here.”
Upstairs I unpacked the little that was in the two bags. Mostly books or food that they’d brought for me while I was in the hospital. The voices downstairs felt like a comforting buzz, making me smile. Returning to the window seat I sat, and reached for one of the pillows when something caught my eye. It was a small hard-covered book. The cover had cherries on it. Opening it I found it was a diary. Curious because it had to be mine, I started to browse through it. It had more recent entries. But before I could start to read it Kaoru, Shinya, Kyo and Saika brought up several containers of food and drinks. Putting the diary down I moved to sit on the floor with them.
“How you feeling?” Shinya asked, pouring tea and offering me a cup of it.
I shrugged, but grinned. “Fine, except for the whole not remembering thing.”
Kaoru gently patted my arm. “You will in time. Don’t rush it. We’re here for you.”
Everyone else nodded so I couldn’t help but smile. Somehow, knowing they’d be there made me feel much better. Hopefully that diary would shed some light into who I really was. I knew my name. That was kind of it. My surroundings felt familiar, faces felt familiar rather than looked it, and that broken mirror inside my head was still so, but sometimes a piece drew near enough that I could see a moving image in it, and knew it was a memory.
…………………………
“Kiss me.”
It was a rough command. Not one that was frightening in that it was cruel, but one that was frightening in that it made me want to. I couldn’t see a face, only the full warm lips. I wanted to reach up and kiss them, run my tongue over them to know their taste, and feel them then take total control of mine.
The dream spun dizzily, and when it settled down my heart was racing. I could hear music, and everything was dark. I didn’t much like that nothingness that is darkness. There was a touch on my face, and I gasped softly, but that gasp was soon swallowed up by soft and warm lips. The kiss made me sigh. The lips grew bolder, and I groaned. A hand was on my breast. The touch was brief, but it ignited a heat inside me that made me arch up for more. Again! Touch me again! I wanted to say it, but didn’t. Why didn’t I say it?
The dream spun again, and when it settled once more I was facing Kaoru. “Don’t worry. You’ll be safe, and I’ll come by often.” I was feeling upset and anxious. It wasn’t directed at Kaoru. I knew that much. He reached up a hand and smoothed my hair from my face. “Suji-chan, it’s going to be okay. Trust me.” I did. I trusted him with my life. And to prove it I moved forward and put my arms around him, burying my face against his shoulder, and he held me while I cried.
Sitting up in bed I blinked several times. Then the insistent throbbing at my temples made me groan, and I stumbled out of bed, heading for the bathroom where I knew packets of medicine for headaches were. I would have considered the dreams, but the pain was too distracting. All I knew for certain was that I trusted Kaoru, and cared for him.
I quietly made my way downstairs, going to the kitchen to get a glass of water so I could take the medicine. I was on my way back upstairs when I heard the soft snoring, and I peered into the living room. Kaoru lay on the sofa; one arm flung over his head, a knee bent, and a blanket half off him. I went over to lift the blanket and settle it over him, putting my glass of water on the coffee table. He was bare-chested, sleeping in grey sweatpants only. Bent over him, I was just lowering the blanket over his chest when he woke with a start, his hands grabbing at my arms, and his eyes narrowed. I gasped, his quick reflexes startling me.
“Suji?” he whispered, surprised. “What’s wrong?”
My gaze lowered from his intense one, and fell on his lips as he spoke. Frowning, I considered my dreams, and before I could think further I let myself fall into him, and kissed him.
