AN: All right, all right, all right. You convinced me to post ONE LAST CHAPTER! The song that Charity sings is Forever by Vertical Horizon, and I really think it describes the relationship she has with Johnny.
Johnny crept into the coffee shop. He sat to in a chair far towards the back. Charity say up on the stage, her fingers already plucking at her guitar strings. Johnny bit down on his lip as he listened to her.
“Take these roses off of me, let me live and let me be, for a little while. Let my eyes see everything and nothing in their time, I do not mind. Who’d have guessed I’d ever learn to let the walls around me burn, and light up the hillside. My words, I ate them for so long and nothing changed, it just was the same. And I don’t know if you see me here, but I can tell you your face is clear. I will see you forever. Forever, forever, I will see you. Forever, forever. ” She was singing. Oh God. He loved it when she sang. How much had he missed the sound of her voice? Three weeks had crawled past, and every day had been worse than the one before.
Johnny had taken to sending her a dozen roses a day. He knew that she didn’t have a place to put them, probably didn’t even want them, but he couldn’t bring himself to stop. Johnny just wanted her to have one little reminder that he loved her, that he hadn’t forgotten her.
“Call me close once again. Call me teacher; call me friend, just like the first. Call my name; it echoes in the walls around this room, it’s all you. And I don’t know if you hear me there, when it’s darkest and no one cares. I will hear you forever. Forever, I will hear you. Forever, forever.”
That line made Johnny smile. Charity had been his teacher. She had taught him that he didn’t have to be unhappy if he didn’t want to. That he was a good father to his children. That four different kinds of snack cakes didn’t make a whole meal. She had been everything to him. She still was.
“And I wanted you to be everything to me, and now I’ve got to learn to carry on. And I know I cannot hide this emptiness inside. Nothing is the same since you’re gone. Send me letters from above. Send me strength; send me love, such sweet love. Sing me song that echo in my head and in my heart. That’s where you are. And I don’t know if you feel me here, but I can tell you one thing is clear. I will feel you, forever. Forever, I will feel you. Forever, forever. And I will hear you, forever. Forever, and I will see you. Forever, forever. Take these roses off of me, let me live, let me be.”
Johnny knew that she was moving up in the world. Knew that a producer had called her, had heard her and said she was talented. He knew she had a contract now, that she was going to be playing paying gigs with a real band. Her voice was going to reach people now.
And he was going to be stuck here by himself.
When the song was over, Johnny clapped harder than anyone else did. Charity’s eyes squinted into the darkness and landed on him. A warmth lit in the pit of his belly.
“Johnny!” she cried as she ran off the stage. He opened his arms and she ran into them. He held her for a moment, both forgetting just why it was they weren’t supposed to be doing this.
“You shouldn’t be here.” She quickly put some space between them. It felt like miles, even though it was inches.
“I just wanted to say good luck and all that.” He stuck his hands in his pockets. There was a moment of silence. She didn’t ask him how the children were, how Vanessa was. He knew that she didn’t want to know. It hurt to ask about the children, and she didn’t even like his wife.
“I’m leaving to New York tomorrow. I have to meet with some agents and some people for my back up band.”
“Oh?” he sighed. Charity nodded and hooked some of her hair behind her ear.
“We’re going on a tour then. A year, at least.”
“I’m divorcing Vanessa.” Johnny blurted out. “She’ll be gone in a year.”
“Johnny, don’t make me promises you’re not going to keep.” She sounded so tired.
“I’m not, Charity.” He gently grasped her shoulders. “I’m not.”
“Will you be waiting for me in a year?”
“I’ll be right here waiting for you.” He said softly. Charity stood on tiptoe and brushed a kiss to his nose.
“Then this is where I’ll find you.”
