Disclaimer: This story is a work of fiction. I do not profit monetarily from this work. I don't know Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood. |
I hadn't realized that it had been so long since I had posted. I had more planned for the chapter, and I'll write the rest, I just want to post an update while I had some time to write. Fall Break should not just be two days.
Ch 19
Jason shut the trunk as he slung Kelly’s last bag onto his shoulder. “Remember I’m only a house away if you need anything.” He grinned and made his way up to the front door of Kelly’s house as his sister mocked him. He didn’t care if Kelly made fun of him; he wanted to be sure that Kelly knew he was around after the blow up with Ashley.
Carrie nudged Kelly with her elbow so that the brunette would stop mumbling about Jason’s comment. She thought it was a sweet offer, although she didn’t plan on taking Jason up on the suggestion for a few days. “Kel, just hug him or he might not leave.”
Kelly dropped her suitcase on the porch and immediately turned to grab Jason in a hug. She did not want her brother to hang with them. They had only just gotten home, and she planned to have Carrie all to herself for the rest of the day at the very least.
Jason hugged Kelly with his free arm, and then he set the bag down on the porch next to the suitcase Kelly had abandoned. “Okay, well, you two get some rest. I call you in a few days if I don’t hear from you.” He walked back to the car and thought about how he would enjoy the break from all the drama that had come into their lives.
“Hey, Jase?” Kelly remained next to her luggage as Jason opened the car door. “You remember that thing I asked you to do?” She glanced sideways at Carrie. Carrie would probably be on the first plane back to Nashville if her mother 'popped by' to check on her. “Don’t forget okay?”
Jason chuckled at the gentle reminder. “Yeah, I won’t forget. Bye, Care.” He smiled at the blonde, who actually waved goodbye to him, and then he shook his head and got in the car. It wasn’t like Kelly had to worry if their mother did come by to meet Carrie. He had promised to intervene, even though his mom had called him the day before to try to get information out of him.
Carrie barely managed to keep her grin to an appropriate level as she watched Jason drive away. “What did you ask him to do?” She grabbed Kelly’s bag and walked for the front door. She didn’t really care about whatever Kelly had asked Jason to do; she just wanted to talk about something normal so she didn’t blurt out that she wanted to kiss Kelly. Carrie had spent the weekend feeling psyched for the trip and nervous; that had all changed into anticipation though the second she had met up with Kelly in the Dallas airport.
Kelly grabbed her keys from her handbag and began to look for the right set. “Just some work thing. Nothing to worry about.” She wasn’t about to mention her mother. Ashley had snapped at her while she was on the phone with Carrie, because she had been ignoring Ashley, and said that Jeanne would not let the trip go by without meeting Carrie. Even though she hadn’t been able to see Carrie’s reaction, Kelly had been able to tell that it had freaked out Carrie. Kelly picked up her remaining bag when she found the keys she needed. “Want to tell me what’s up with grabbing my bags? I do have two hands you know?”
Carrie snickered while Kelly unlocked the door. “Please, you so don’t care that I picked up your bag. Just concentrate on getting the door open. I don’t plan on standing out here while you try to juggle bags and keys.” Carrie held on tighter to the luggage so that she didn’t give into the urge to kiss Kelly. She had been holding back since she first saw Kelly in the airport, and she didn’t plan to give in now that they were close to being in the comfort of the other girl’s home.
Kelly gave Carrie a look, but she opened the door anyway and stepped aside so Carrie could go in first. “You sure don’t sound like you missed me. That was you on the phone last night, right? Saying you missed me and couldn’t wait to see me?” Kelly smiled when Carrie scoffed. She wouldn’t let Ashley’s reaction, or her mother, mess up their vacation. Kelly walked into the house and dropped her suitcase right inside the door. “Put those down and come here.”
Carrie set their bags down next to the wall while she took another glance around at her surroundings. “So… we really get to be alone for a few days?” She walked over and put her arms around Kelly’s waist. “There aren’t going to be any weird two am knocks on the door from people?” They had yet to talk about Ashley in person, though Carrie had heard about the silence between the two best friends during her and Kelly’s phone conversations. She wouldn’t put it past Ashley to show up unannounced.
“If there are people knocking on the door at two in the morning, I’m handing you my freaking gun and letting you loose on them.” Kelly grinned and wrapped her arms loosely around Carrie’s neck as Carrie blushed. “Don’t worry. I’d totally back you up.” She laughed as Carrie pulled her close and called her a nerd. “Whatever, Tomboy.” Kelly quickly smirked before she rose up and kissed Carrie soundly.
Carrie moved one hand to Kelly’s lower back as she let the other drift to the brunette’s hip. She wasn’t about to let Kelly go since the other girl seemed to have missed her as much as she had missed Kelly. Carrie pressed forward and deepened their kiss. She barely felt it when her arm grazed against what must have been a table, what she did notice was Kelly’s loss of balance because of her move. Carrie pulled away and held Kelly by the hips to help her girlfriend.
Kelly stared at Carrie for a second, confused by the end of their kissing, although she took a deep breath when she saw the concern in Carrie’s eyes. “You do know that I think you’re worth a few bumps and bruises?”
Carrie looked away because she thought the same; she was just a bit too happy to kiss Kelly to answer. She raised an eyebrow when Kelly took her by the hand and led her further into the house. “Am I getting a tour? Can it involve kisses?”
Kelly giggled and laced their fingers together as she led them into the living room. “It could if you want, or I could just give you a tour later?” Kelly pushed Carrie into a chair, and then straddled the younger girl. “I’ve pictured you here before.”
Carrie straightforwardly slipped her arms around Kelly’s waist as the other girl leaned in to kiss her softly. “Really? I don’t even rate the couch?” She let her hands slip lower when Kelly smacked her shoulder for her comment. Carrie stared into Kelly’s eyes; she loved the amused look directed at her. She straightened up and teasingly kissed Kelly while she urged the older girl closer.
Kelly tried her best to return Carrie’s short kisses; however, she couldn’t quite keep up since she was trying to find a good place to put her hands. She should have thought out where they ended up, but she hadn’t, and still didn’t, care enough to change things. “You rate more than the couch, but we’re working our way up to it.” Kelly laughed when Carrie nipped her chin and tugged her down by her hips. She wanted to let things progress naturally. She wouldn’t just toss Carrie on the couch and make out with the girl, although Carrie had done that to her once.
Carrie had a retort on the tip of her tongue; she forgot about it though when Kelly began to kiss along her jaw. She wasn’t sure why Kelly hadn’t kissed her again; it was all she had thought about during the drive from the airport. She liked what Kelly’s lips were doing to her skin though, so she remained quiet and playfully rubbed her hands up and down Kelly’s sides. Carrie let her head fall back when Kelly reached the other side of her jaw and didn’t show any sign of moving on. “Lower.”
Kelly frowned and stopped with her kisses to look at Carrie. The blonde was still touching her and smiling… Kelly grinned and brought her hands up to Carrie’s shoulders. “How much lower?” She brought her lips down to Carrie’s when the other girl grabbed her tightly by her hips. Kelly had known it would be good to get some time to themselves, but she hadn’t thought that Carrie would be able to push everything away the minute they arrived at her house. She would have planned the trip much sooner if she had known.
Carrie didn’t think Kelly expected an answer, so she didn’t speak when Kelly started to gently kiss along her neck. She rubbed her hands on Kelly’s hips while she mentally thanked Kelly for going for comfort on the plane ride. She might have had to make Kelly change if the older girl had been wearing jeans. As it was, she couldn’t decide if she wanted to slip her hands underneath Kelly’s worn shirt so that she could feel Kelly’s skin, or if she actually wanted to comment on the pair of pants her girlfriend was wearing. When Kelly found a particularly sensitive spot near her ear, Carrie groaned. “What do I do in this scenario that you’ve made up about me and this chair?”
Kelly was thrown by the comment, so she momentarily ignored it as she lightly sucked at the patch of skin that had caused Carrie to groan. She forced herself to pay attention when Carrie said her name and grabbed her ass. “You were…” Kelly couldn’t say that she pictured Carrie watching sports in the chair, it would totally kill the mood. “Pretty much what you’re doing now.” She bit her lip when she felt Carrie’s hands move tantalizingly slowly over her ass. “You want me to think when you’re doing that? Seriously?”
“Yes.” Carrie smirked while she watched Kelly bite her lip again. She didn’t believe Kelly. She wouldn’t freak out if Kelly talked dirty to her. She didn’t know if she would do anything Kelly said, but she could decide if they got to that point. “I expect my girlfriend to tell me what she wants. Just like I’ll tell you the same.” Carrie continued with her motions and was unsurprised, but thankful, when Kelly went back to kissing her neck.
Kelly was going to talk to Carrie about the whole girlfriend thing, only she would do it once she was sure she wouldn’t cry, or ask Carrie twenty questions. Or maybe when she wasn’t on top of her girlfriend, with Carrie’s hands doing very nice things to her. Kelly quit kissing Carrie’s neck for a second to admire the hickey she had given Carrie, when she heard the distinct noise of a throat being cleared. She looked over in the direction the sound had come from and froze at the sight of her mom. Kelly didn’t know what to say; she was in her house after all, although she knew she had to say something before it turned into a meet the family type deal.
Carrie absently looked over to see what had captured Kelly’s attention. She blinked, but the woman was still in the doorway of the living room. Carrie looked back at Kelly to see that the other girl still wasn’t talking or moving. She hurriedly lifted Kelly, glad that the smaller girl didn’t try to fight her, and slid out of the chair. It was just her luck that someone was interrupting them out in the middle of nowhere Texas. Carrie didn’t take her eyes off the stranger, even though the woman didn’t have any kind of weapon. “How did you get in?” She lowered her voice so only Kelly could hear her. “Kel, get out your phone.”
Kelly rolled her eyes and moved so that she was sitting in the chair since Carrie had moved her to the arm of the chair. She was glad Carrie wasn’t freaking out, but Carrie still didn’t know that it was her mom and not an intruder. “Love you getting protective, but that’s my mom, Care. I showed you a picture of her. I know it was on the phone and all, but yeah,” Kelly looked back and forth between her girlfriend and her mom. “That’s her.” Kelly sighed and ran a hand through her hair because she could tell her mother was seconds away from laughing at them.
Jeanne struggled to hold in her laughter when Carrie’s bravado swiftly turned into surprised and nervous staring. She had come to Kelly’s house to meet Carrie and check on her daughter; and she had of course made a meal, which she hoped would at least get her however long it took Kelly to inhale it for her to visit. “Well, it’s obvious why Kelly likes you.”
Carrie backed up a few steps and stared at Kelly’s mom. She didn’t know what she was supposed to say about something so vague. She had a feeling though that Kelly’s mom was referring to what she had been doing to Kelly, and not the fact that they were both into music and hopefully not that she was funny for acting protective. “I, umm,” Carrie looked at Kelly for some indication as to whether Jeanne was angry with her or not. She needed to know if she should run for the door if the older woman was angry.
Kelly willed her blush to recede, even though she knew it wouldn’t work. “Mom, please don’t say things like that about me and Carrie. It’s just weird.” She wondered if any one else had to deal with a mother who thought it was funny to tease significant others about catching them in compromising situations. “Carrie, it’s fine.” Kelly stood up because her girlfriend didn’t look reassured at all. “Really.”
Carrie wanted to know why Kelly thought it was a good idea to move closer to her when Kelly’s mother had so clearly seen or heard them. She looked at Kelly’s mom again and relaxed when she saw that the woman was just watching them, although that didn’t mean she was anxious to move closer and shake hands. “It’s nice to meet you, Jeanne. I mean, Mrs. Clarkson, uh.” Carrie glanced at Kelly because for the life of her she couldn’t remember if Kelly had said if Jeanne had kept Kelly’s step dad’s name. “I mean Miss Jeanne. It’s good to meet you and I have the utmost respect for Kelly. Completely.” Carrie just hoped Jeanne was deaf and hadn’t seen her hands on Kelly’s ass, or that Jeanne was a slow runner.
Jeanne couldn’t hold in her laughter any longer and laughed at Carrie’s nervous ramble. If Carrie didn’t look so terrified, she would have continued to laugh over the girl’s speech. “Jeanne is okay by me, and I have to say it’s nice to meet the girl that’s kept Kelly from home. Though from what I’ve seen so far-”
“Mom!” Kelly interrupted her mother and grabbed Carrie’s hand before the blonde could run for the door. “That’s not funny!” She faced Carrie and reassuringly rubbed the taller girl’s arm. “She doesn’t mean it. I’m going to kill Jason. I know this is his fault.” Kelly was sure that it could only be her brother’s doing that she had gone from making out with Carrie to trying to calm her girlfriend down because her mother had decided to surprise her.
Carrie stayed quiet. She wasn’t about to open her mouth after the weird name thing because before she could stop herself she would be trying to tell a joke to ease the tension, and she could already imagine how badly it would go over; like with Reba. Only it would be worse though.
Jeanne rolled her eyes at Kelly’s dramatic yelling. “Calm down, sweetie. I’m just happy that you’re home and that I get to meet Carrie.” She smiled when she saw Carrie pat Kelly’s hand. “See? Carrie’s all right, so you can stop all the histrionics and give me a hug.” Jeanne held her arms out expectantly, and then hugged Kelly close when her daughter walked over. “I like her. She’s funny; a little wound up though.”
Kelly awkwardly patted her mother’s back when her mom didn’t let go right away. “Yup, and she can hear you still.” Kelly managed to muffle her sigh and walked back over to Carrie. “It’s not normally like this, I promise. She knows her keys are for,” Kelly looked back at her mother. “Emergencies only.” Kelly turned back to Carrie and was relieved to see that her girlfriend looked much calmer now. “And she’s going to be leaving soon. Right, Mom?”
Carrie appreciated that Kelly was all about her, but she didn’t want to mess up her first meeting with Jeanne any more than she already had. “I understand completely if you want to spend some time with us, Jeanne. It has been a while since Kelly’s been home.” Carrie ignored the dark look on Kelly’s face that she could see out of the corner of her eye, since she hadn’t looked away from Jeanne. “Can I get you something to drink? We need to get our bags still, but I could get you something real quick.”
Jeanne smiled brightly and looked at Kelly to see if her daughter felt the same. She would love to help Kelly unpack and catch up with the girls. “If Kelly thinks-”
“No.” Kelly let go of Carrie’s hand, but she didn’t bother to give Carrie a look for the invitation. She knew Carrie had only offered because of manners and to make a good impression.
“But I cooked. I should check on it while you unpack.” Jeanne wouldn’t stay since Kelly clearly didn’t want her around; she did remember that Carrie wasn’t out to anyone, so she knew she couldn’t tease the girls too much longer. “You’re gonna love it, Carrie. Kelly told me you were a vegetarian too, so I found the cookbook I bought Kelly and tried out a few recipes. You go on and get settled while I fix the plates.”
Carrie looked at Kelly to see that her girlfriend was not pleased at all. She had a feeling that she didn’t want to be around to see what Kelly had to say to Jeanne. “Sounds good.” Carrie walked out of the room before either woman could stop her. Maybe she could run to Jason’s house and they could drink the beers they had sent ahead. He had pointed his place out to her when they drove by. She thought she could get halfway to Jason’s before Kelly or Jeanne noticed her absence.
Kelly waited until she was sure Carrie couldn’t hear them, and then she spoke. “Why did you think it would be a good idea to surprise us? I’m pretty sure I remember telling you about how Carrie is shy and gets nervous around people she doesn’t know well.” Kelly loved her mother, she really did, it was just too much of a shock though to come home and find her in the house after everything that had gone on lately. “And I know Jason told you the same. Where is he? Why aren’t you at his place?”
“I would imagine your brother is at his house and I will go see him next.” Jeanne walked over to her daughter even though Kelly was pouting. “I wanted to see you and I wanted to meet Carrie.” When her words didn’t have any visible effect on Kelly, Jeanne tried to joke. “I wasn’t going to stay and eat with y’all. I made it because that girl of yours probably only gets takeout with you around. You both need a good meal. I have to make sure my baby is eating properly.”
Kelly crossed her arms over her chest and tried to keep up her anger. She really hated it when she couldn’t stay angry with her mom for very long. She had never been able to stay angry for long when her mother acted concerned. “Carrie and I both eat stuff other than fastfood. I totally had that plan to make her dinner, it wasn’t my fault the plane was late… or that she’s better at cooking than me.”
Jeanne laughed and hugged Kelly with one arm. “Like I said, I wasn’t planning on staying long. Although I do want to talk with Carrie before you two leave again.” Jeanne hugged Kelly with both arms, and then she kissed the top of her daughter’s head and let go. “I’m going to check on the meal. You go help that poor girl find the rooms.”
Kelly left the living room and ignored her mother’s laughter about how cute it was that Carrie had freaked out over the name thing. If she hadn’t of been surprised and upset, she probably would have found Carrie’s behavior funny too. Kelly sighed when she saw that Carrie and the bags weren’t by the door. She headed in the obvious direction of the staircase and found Carrie at the top of the landing. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know she was in the house.”
Carrie half shook her head and toed at their luggage with her shoe. She knew the topic would have come up if Kelly had known Jeanne would be waiting for them. “I’m sorry I spazzed.” Carrie looked over at Kelly and smiled a little when she saw the other girl’s nervous mannerisms. She closed the distance between them and took Kelly’s hands in her own so Kelly couldn’t wring them. “It took me until I got to the top of the stairs to remember that I didn’t know where I was going.” Carrie wanted to ask if Jeanne was staying, but first she wanted to reassure Kelly that she was all right.
Kelly had to smile at Carrie’s attempt to let her know that there wouldn’t be any running out of the house in terror. “That whole thing about you expecting me to tell you what I want?” She bit her lip nervously when Carrie grinned and hugged her close. “Would you think it was completely inappropriate of me to say that I wish my mom hadn’t dropped in because she wanted to meet you so much? Because I really liked that part where you said I was your girlfriend.” Kelly knew she shouldn’t be nervous, especially since Carrie had been the one to bring it up, but she was. “I’m like so incredibly-”
Carrie cut Kelly off with a kiss; sometimes it was the only way to get Kelly to be quiet. “You can call me whatever you want, and hopefully, maybe you can tell me some things later on tonight?” She cupped Kelly’s cheek with a hand and gave the shorter girl a brief kiss. “Because I really liked everything that happened downstairs.” Carrie was trying to joke around to ease Kelly; however, she was serious. She wished that she could have said it a bit more smoothly, so that Kelly would for sure get that she was talking about the physical stuff too, but she was still a little rattled by Jeanne’s appearance from out of nowhere.
Kelly stood up on the tips of her toes and kissed Carrie like she had downstairs before the interruption. “I can totally keep that promise.” Kelly hugged Carrie tighter for a moment before she let go, which caused Carrie to do the same. “Let’s get this into my room and freshen up, and then we can go back downstairs and eat with my mom. Otherwise, she’ll probably show up again tonight if we don’t.” Kelly just grabbed her suitcase when Carrie laughed and agreed with her.
