Winds of Destiny(Pt19)
Carefully making his way to where Joe had been standing seconds before, Nick leaned over the rail to yell for him. He stood straight as Sav came over to him.
Chelsea came from below followed by Crystal. “What happened?”
“A rogue wave, we think. Joe lost his balance and fell overboard.” Travis told her.
“He did it on purpose.” Sav scoffed, standing close to Nick to look down in the water.
“Why would he do that?” Nick glared at him.
“To get attention.”
“He should be back on board.” Nick shot back.
“Give him a minute to get his barring.” Chelsea called out.
“Maybe he stayed in for a swim.” Sav suggested when that minute went by and Joe hadn’t returned.
“Travis, bring us about!” Nick yelled and started stripping his clothes off.
“Joe is playing his stupid game again and you fell for it Nick.”
Nick spun on him, grabbing Sav by his shoulders. “Joe is not playing games.”
Sav knock his hand away. “Yes he is.”
“Open your eyes Richard, you are pushing Joe to depression, that could possibly kill him, because you are ignoring him.”
“He certainly can’t do it by drowning.” Sav scoffed.
“No…he can’t.” Nick brushed past him. “What is the depth in this area Travis?”
He glanced at the gauges. “About 915 meters(3,000 feet).”
“He may not be able to drown, but the pressure of the water as he sinks deeper, will crush him to death.”
“If that is what he is doing.” Sav shot back. “Have you forgotten the games he played, followed me all over France, making me think…”
“He did that out of desperation!” Nick yelled. “A man will take desperate measure when he thinks he has lost everything.”
“Joe hasn’t lost everything.” Sav snorted.
“Well, he believes that he has. What does he have to come back to? Certainly not the man that he is madly in love with, would die for. Open your eyes Richard and you will see that desperation in him.”
“If you two are finished arguing...” Travis cut in. “I believe we are coming up to the place where he fell off.”
Sav thought about what Nick said, remembering all the crazy things he had done since Marseilles. Alarms went off in his head, ones that he had grown to recognize over the years with Joe. “I’m going too.”
“No, you stay here and guide Travis to where ever we come up.”
“Chelsea, drop the mainsail.” Travis yelled. “Crystal get the gennaker down, I’ll help you in a minute. We will have to do this by motor.”
“Hurry and find him Nick.” Crystal said as she scrambled to the bow.
Travis grabbed a now stunned Sav to drag him to the helm. “You steer the yacht, listen to my direction and you’ll do just fine.”
“But I…I…”
“Yes you can.” Travis told him and started the motor, leaving it in neutral. “I know a little about the bond thing you have with them. Maneuver the yacht as if you are walking toward them. Push this handle forward a bit, it will engage the propellers to move us forward…” Travis noted the blank expression on Sav’s face. “This is your gas peddle, forward, goes faster, back all the way, reverse…OK.”
Sav nodding his understand, feeling for Nick, then dropping the wall between himself and Joe, hoping he would believe the plea for him to not to go any deeper in the water. Pushing the throttle forward, Sav maneuvered the yacht through the water. Five minutes later Travis yelled at him to turn hard to the right, bringing them back around, he spun the wheel and the yacht quickly responded.
“Travis…how far…deep…does Joe hav…”
“Anything past 130 meters (420feet) would be dangerous for any normal human, but Joe isn’t normal. Why?”
“I..I can feel him.”
“Even through all the water?”
Crystal came over to stand beside him. “Is he in pain Sav?”
“Yes…no…” He quickly added. “No…he isn’t in pain…maybe a little.”
“Did Nick reach him yet?” Crystal asked.
Sav frowned and tilted his head sideways. “No.” He turned the wheel to retrace the path through the water. The minutes ticked by in silence and Sav once again turned the yacht around, plowing through the calm dark waters. Pushing the throttle forward to get more speed he turned again.
“They’re coming up, but not where we are.” Sav told them.
Ten minutes later Sav pulled the throttle back, quickly stepping from behind the wheel to peer over the side. Grabbing the rail he leaned over intently staring down into the blackness of the water.
A few minutes later, Nick surfaced and with his arm tight around Joe’s chest, he flew over the railing to drop heavily on the deck, he laid a semi-conscious Joe down on his stomach.
Coughing to clear the little water he had inhaled, Nick straddled Joe’s waist to push hard on his lower back to purge the water from his lungs. He did that three more times before Joe sucked in a shallow breath, coughing up more on the exhale.
Chelsea offered a towel to Nick. “I thought you didn’t need air to breath.”
“We do, just not as much as you require.” Nick slid from his back to sit on the deck. “Give him a few minutes to recover and we can take him below.” He stood up on wobbly legs, gently rubbing Crystal shoulder.
Joe slowly turned over, flopping to his back, still coughing. He opened his eyes to see the stars twinkling overhead.
“Trying to kill your self by sinking to the bottom? What the hell were you thinking Joe?!” Sav loomed above him.
Pushing himself to a sitting position, Joe glanced up at him and rasped around the soreness in his throat. “Why do you care?”
Without warning, Sav punched him in the mouth, sending Joe sideways to his hands.
“Rick!” Crystal yelled and knelt beside him, helping him to sit up again.
Mumbled something under his breath, Sav stomped down the stairs.
Travis overcame his initial shock at what he did. “Mr. Elliott, if you wish to remain a guest on board my yacht, don’t pull a stunt like that again, understood.”
Joe wiped the blood from his lip. “I didn’t intentionally fall over..wasn’t expecting the boat to roll like that.”
“Open sea is no place to be careless.” Travis shot back.
“I wasn’t being careless.” Joe uttered, coughing again. “I’ll leave when we reach Santa Cruz.”
“Oh no you are not Joe.” Nick hauled him to his feet, then pushed him down on the bench seat. “You are staying here where I can watch over you.”
“You can follow me back to Dublin Nick and watch me there all you want. It doesn’t matter anyway, because you already know what’s going to happen or already started.”
Chelsea moved to stand in front of him, taking the towel, she unfolded a corner. “You must have hit your head, your bleeding.” Using her finger, she gently parted the hair for a better look, then pressed the towel to the deep gash to stop the blood flow.
Joe flinched from the slight pain and glanced up at her. “Explains why I was so disoriented down there.” He swung his eyes to Travis. “And not ‘pulling a stunt’.”
“My apologies for jumping…”
“Don’t worry about it.” Joe told him and closed his eyes.
“Do head injuries affect you the same as us?”
Joe shook his head, felt the cooler glass bottle touch his hand. Taking a long pull of blood wine, eyes opened to stare out at the dark horizon.
“It stopped bleeding.” Chelsea informed him.
“Thanks.” Joe replied with a weak smile. “It will be gone in a few hours, not even a scar.” With that said, Joe took the towel Chelsea held and stumbled down to his room.
Nick ran his fingers through his hair and glanced at Travis, seeing the uncertainty in his eyes. “Don’t worry Travis, everything will be fine.”
“Maybe you should explain to me more of what’s going on Nick.”
“I will, just let me change out of these wet clothes first.”
Hours later, with the sun slowly gracing the sky, he was staring at the wood grain on the door until it became blurred. Sav finally cleared his vision, sucking in a deep breath. He didn’t bother to knock as he swung the door open. Letting his eyes adjust to the darker room, he found Joe curled up on his bed facing away from door, still wearing the same clothes he had on when he fell overboard.
“Are you going to change?”
Joe didn’t respond, choosing to ignore him.
Sav sighed, moving further into the room, he sat the bottle of blood wine on the small table. He went about finding him a change of clothes, pulling out a pair of shorts and shirt for him. “I know you’re not asleep, so stop ignoring me.” He tossed the clothes on the mattress and sat down. Reaching out, his fingers mere inches from touching his shoulder, changing his mind Sav quickly jerked his hand away. “Are you going to change Joe?”
“Why?” His reply was soft, but strained.
“I…because I know its uncomfortable wearing wet clothes.”
Joe blindly reached for the garments to pull them in front of him. “I will change later, need a shower first.”
Leaning to the table he grabbed the bottle to pull the cork out. “I brought….are you hungry?”
Joe slowly turned over, catching his eyes a moment before looking to the bottle he held. Moving his gaze upward, he settled on Sav’s throat, his tongue came out to wet his lips.
Sav felt the weight of his eyes and shifted on the bed, causing Joe to sit up to reach for the bottled, then stopped. “I’m not….hungry.”
“I’ve noticed you’re looking thinner, dark circles under your eyes, you have to eat.”
“You seem concerned about my health all of a sudden. Why, feeling guilty about something?”
“I’m not guilty for anything. Yes, I’m concerned about you and came in here to make sure you were alright after hitting your head and fa...”
“Well Rick, I’m not alright, you made sure of that. Now why don’t you just go away and leave me alone. You have been real good about that so far.”
Sav held his temper as Joe once again accused him of their problems. He sat the bottle back on the table and stood up. “All right Joe, have it your way. But, I’m not the one that made you feel this way, you and you alone did that.”
“That is such bullshit Rick.” Joe scooted to the edge of the bed. “What part have you missed in all these weeks? I have done everything I know of, bent over backwards for you. Tonight was the first time…the first fucking time you really acknowledge that I was here and you do that by smashing my mouth. Then come in here acting all concerned for...”
“I acted out of anger…I didn’t mean to hit you. It just…I was afraid when you didn’t come back on the boat. Thinking that you were sinking to the bottom, to be crushed, like Nick said…it scared me. We didn’t know you banged your head at the time.”
“The bottom of the ocean would be a better place than on this boat with someone that doesn’t even notice me.”
Sav shoved his hands in his pocket and stared at the floor. Joe raked his fingers through his hair, cringing when he felt the stickiness of saltwater.
“As usually we fight and it gets nowhere…” Joe swallowed around the tightness in this throat. “..so why don’t you just go back to Nick and have a fucking jolly good time, pretend nothing is wrong. I’ve had enough of your entertainment to last me a life time. Oh wait…it has been a life time hasn’t it?”
“Yes Joe, it has.”
“I guess we’ll be enjoying the next life time without each other. You will anyway, ‘cause you will have Nick around to entertain you. And we all know how you like his ‘I never had to forgive him’ entertainment.”
“That’s not fair.”
“Nothing is fair in your world Rick.”
“What is that suppose to mean?”
“You’re a smart guy, you figure it out.” Joe huffed and lay back down, diverting his eyes so that Sav couldn’t see the tears that threatened to spill. “I can’t take this…distance between us anymore, it’s tearing me apart inside.”
“You don’t think I feel the same way?”
“No.”
“You are wrong Joe. I don’t like this any more than you do. You are the one that has to take the first steps, coming to terms with your problems, the ones that are keeping us apart.”
“You said you would help me?”
“And I will. Whenever you are ready to face it, come to terms with the last year, I’ll be there for you.”
“You haven’t been so far.” Joe glanced up at him, then turned over, facing the slightly curved wall.
“You have to be the one to come to me Joe. I tried so many times at home to get you to open up, talk to me, instead you pushed me and every one away. All the denial, blame from you, is what put us here.”
Sav took the hint that the conversation was over, when Joe didn’t respond. Darting his eyes around the small room, he took a deep breath as he held the knob to look back at Joe to notice his shoulder barely shaking. “Get some rest Joe.”

A few days later Nick was leaning against the door jam, his arms folded across his chest, watching Joe move about the small sail room. Things had not gone as he had hoped and he was going to make one more effort with the two men in his life.
“Are you sure there isn’t anything I can do to persuade you to change your mind?”
“No.” Joe replied.
“Maybe…promise to tie myself to the mast awaiting the sun…you could watch. Would that do it?”
Joe turned to see him smiling, but didn’t or couldn’t see the humor in his remark. “That would make a big mess for Travis and Chelsea to clean up.”
“Not really, they could get under way and blow me off.”
“If you’re trying to be funny Nick, its not working and neither did the plan you had to get us back together.”
“So it would seem.” Nick pushed off the door to approach him. “I still don’t think this is the best course to take.”
“What other options do I have?”
“The only one….stop denying you blame Rick for Thomas’ death.”
Joe threw the clothes he held into his case. “I...don’t blame him.”
Nick politely smiled, he dare not tell Joe that he was in deep denial of the truth. “You must try harder to win...”
“I don’t have the energy to try harder.”
“That never stopped you before.” Nick told him.
“Relationships are harder to keep, especially this one, much harder than a career in music. I don’t have the energy for our relationship anymore.”
“We never had one Joseph.”
“You know who I mean.” Joe snapped and shoved him away.
Nick held his hands up in surrender. “Alright, it’s obvious I can’t stop you from doing this, you should reconsider your decision.” He left him to think about it and went back on deck to help finish bringing on the supplies they would need for the next leg of their journey.
“I have reconsidered it Nick, nothing will change.” Joe said softly to the room as he zipped his case closed. Grabbing the handle, he glanced around the room that he called home for eleven weeks, then closed the door. Taking a deep breath he turned around and went a few feet down the passage way and nearly collided with Sav as he was coming out of his cabin.
Sav quickly stepped back in the doorway to let him pass, then saw the bag in his hand. “Going somewhere?” He asked looking up at Joe.
“I’m going home.” Joe curtly replied.
