Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. I do not know Orlando Bloom. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
It's been so long! I decided that while AFF was working out all the bugs I would hold off on updating. Now here we are! I'm also working on a revised version of this story, but I won't post it until I have it completely revamped. FBut for now here's the next chapter! Enjoy!
It was in this position that Orlando woke the next morning. He heard Jenna’s voice and that of a man he didn’t recognize. “No please you can’t!” Jenna said.
“I’m sorry, but there isn’t any other options. Even if she did wake up we aren’t sure what kind of life she’d have.” The man said. Jenna backed into the room with the man she was speaking to trying to move her. Orlando stood up as they entered. The man stopped short when he saw Orlando standing there. “Orli! This is Dr. Morgan and he wants to unplug Kellie.” Jenna sobbed.
The doctor grimaced and straitened his tie. He then offered Orlando his hand, which he didn’t take.
“Mr. Bloom, Jenna please try to understand.” He began.
“No, we don’t understand. I don’t understand!” Orlando yelled.
“Miss Parks hasn’t moved or responded to anything in a month. It’s time to let go.” Dr. Morgan said.
“She twitched.” Orlando said.
“What?”
“Her hand it twitched while I was talking to her.”
Dr. Morgan walked to the other side of the bed and checked a few read outs. He rattled off some medical terms and a time. Neither Jenna or Orlando knew what to think. He stood holding Kellie’s hand and stroking it. There wasn’t anyway he’d let them unplug her. They’d have to kill him first.
Dr. Morgan cleared his throat. “It seems that she did have a spasm.” Jenna almost shrieked as Dr. Morgan held up his hand. “But, whether or not it was voluntary still needs to be decided.”
“I’ll get her to do it again.” Orlando replied.
Orlando was unsure how long he’d been there. Nurses had come and gone, each doing their duties. No one had spoken to him. He just sat and held her hand. To get some sort of movement or acknowledgment from Kellie was all he sought. All night into the early morning hours he had reminisced about their time together. He had eventually moved onto what he’d been doing while they had been apart. He caressed her limp hand and then pressed it to his lips. She felt warm and alive. In a few hours Dr. Morgan would return. He’d glance at the read outs and see that she hadn’t had a spasm. He would then pull the plug and remove the ventilator. Kellie would either continue to breath or she would succumb and it would all be over. As these thoughts swirled in his head, Orlando began to cry. He pressed her hand to his wet cheek and rocked back and forth.
“Do you want me to beg?” His voiced cracked with emotion. “I will. I can’t let you go, not with all the mistakes we’ve, I’ve made! It can’t end this way.” He laid his head on the bed and cried himself to sleep.
Jenna found him this way when she and Elijah returned. They were followed by Dr. Morgan and a bevy of nurses. All there to complete their task. Jenna gently shook Orlando to wake him up. He blinked at the bright lights as a nurse turned them on. Dr. Morgan had crossed the room to a monitor with a steady stream of paper coming out of it. He looked at it and followed a few lines as they crossed the pages. His lips were pursed and his face grim. He looked across the bed at Orlando and the others. He sighed and dropped the read out. A quick glance at the clock told him it was eight a.m. “She hasn’t had any more spasms.” He said looking at Orlando.
“No.” Orlando said barely above a whisper.
“I’m sorry, but there isn’t anything else we can do.” Dr. Morgan said. “We have to do this.”
Orlando couldn’t answer. He heard Jenna softly crying and turned to look at Elijah. He wanted to bolt from the room, from the hospital, from this nightmare. Elijah took his hand and all three of them moved to the corner to watch the nurses and doctor go to work.
Orlando watched Kellie’s chest rise and fall as the ventilator continued it’s duty. The nurses removed several connectors and wires, leaving only the heart monitor attached to her chest. It only took them a few minutes, but it seems like hours. JEnna had collapsed against Elijah and was sobbing uncontrollably. Orlando turned to them, “Please take her out of here.” Was all he said. Elijah nodded and pulled Jenna from the corner and out into the hall. Still convinced Kellie could hear them, he didn’t want her last moments to be absorbed with Jenna’s tears.
The waves of darkness ebbed and flowed. Kellie couldn’t tell if it had been days or hours. She felt Orlando holding her hand and felt his tears. She heard his plea, but couldn’t respond. Now she felt the gentle tugs as hands removed things from her body. She hear Jenna crying and then all was silent for a moment. She then felt someone touching her face.
“This won’t hurt her, she won’t feel anything.” A male voice above her said. “There’ll be whooshing sound and her chest will continue to rise and fall for a few seconds, but then it’ll be over.”
What will be over? What are they doing? Orlando! I’m here! Please hear me!
Kellie struggled to make her body moved. She couldn’t know if she was successful. She was struggling when she felt warm hands cup her cheeks and a kiss on her left brow. Orlando!
“I love you.” He whispered.
Then he was gone and she was cold.
No! I’m here! Why can’t I move or make a sound!
Kellie was thrashing mentally, but her body never moved. Someone laid her bed down and she was flat. She felt a set of hands move her head and then she heard someone take a deep breath. Then the “whooshing” the man had referred happened. Kellie felt the tube as it left her throat and took all the air in her lungs with it. She fought to take a breath. She needed to scream.
Orlando stepped back and let the circle of nurses close back in around Kellie. He went to the foot of her bed and watched as Dr. Morgan took a deep breath and then removed the ventilator. Everyone stepped back and watched as her chest rose a few times before it stopped moving. The heart monitor flat lines and a shrill noised filled the room. Orlando gripped the foot of the bed to keep himself from falling to the floor. He felt like all the air had left his lungs. Suddenly a scream pierced the room. Orlando looked up to see Kellie sitting straight up in bed. Her eyes weren’t open but she was screaming. With out thinking he crawled up the bed and put his arms around her. He pulled her against him. “Kellie!” He yelled. “Breathe!”
Almost as instantly as she had started, she stopped. She slumped against him and took a deep breath. Orlando felt her relax and go limp as her lungs began filling with air. He watched as her chest move on it’s own. He looked up at the shocked nurses and doctor. “She’s breathing on her own.” He said.
Elijah and Jenna stood at the door. They had heard the monitor flat line and then the screaming. They both were frozen in place staring at Orlando holding Kellie in her hospital bed. She looked like she was sleeping. Jenna inched towards the bed and looked closely at Kellie. “She’s alive?” She whispered. She looked from Dr. Morgan to Orlando.
“She’s breathing on her own.” Dr. Morgan answered.
Jenna and Elijah stood frozen watching Orlando cradle Kellie like a baby. He was stroking her hair and seemed to be whispering to her. Dr. Morgan was conferring with the nurses on the other side of the room. It was all so surreal. Finally after what seemed like hours Dr. Morgan stepped away from the nurses and walked over to the bed. He began to check Kellie’s pulse and listened to her heartbeat. Orlando moved only a little to accommodate him. He lifted her eye lids and glanced at her pupils. They grew tiny from his pen light. Orlando watch all of this and felt his heart clench. Would she continue to breath on her own? If she’d only open her eyes and looks at him!
“It would seem that she’s stable and able to breath on her own.” Dr. Morgan finally stated. “But I need to warn you, this means nothing. She could continue like this for a day or a week before her body just gives up. She responds to some stimuli, since she has yet to open her eyes I’m doubtful of a full recovery if any.”
His grim news hung in the air. Jenna still huddle against Elijah and watched Orlando’s continued administrations to Kellie. What would happen to him if she didn’t live? Jenna feared Orlando might break. He hadn’t even acknowledged that the doctor had spoken. Jenna realized that Elijah was speaking to the doctor and thanking him. She continued to watch as Orlando hugged and rocked Kellie. She couldn’t hear what he was saying and didn’t dare move any closer. She felt a hand on her arm and turned slowly to look at Elijah.
“Come on lets go get some coffee and leave them alone.” He said heading for the door.
Jenna took his hand and followed wordlessly.
Orlando had been attending to everything that happened and was said in the room. He didn’t care what the doctor said. Kellie had screamed and then had calmed almost immediately upon hearing his voice. She was in there and could hear him. He had to believe that she had heard everything he’d said to her. Even now he continued to whisper endearments and pleaded with her to open her eyes.
“You have to open your eyes, prove them wrong.” He whispered. “I won’t give up on you and I won’t leave until you can leave with me.”
I can’t breathe! Oh God please help me! I can’t breathe! It hurts so much! Orlando where are you” Please help me!
Then she felt someone grab her arms and heard Orlando shout close enough to her face that she felt his breath. “Kellie! Breathe!” He shook her slightly and that was all it took. Kellie immediately stopped screaming and took a big breath. I can breathe! Oh my God! I’m doing it! The pain in her chest subsided and she stopped fighting against the weight she felt. She heard Orlando whispering to her and felt his hand as it stroked her hair. She was warm again, she was safe.
Kellie still couldn’t open her eyes or make any part of her body respond. She felt like she’d been drugged. She listened intently to all that was going on in the room around her. It wasn’t as noisy as before, but she could hear other voices beyond Orlando’s. The next thing she knew she was seeing light. What is that? It looks really far away.
“Her pupils are reacting.” A voice said.
“Good girl, but you have to open your eyes for me.” Orlando said.
Kellie wondered at the exchange and then realized that the doctor must have been shining a light in her eyes. I saw it! I saw the light! Now I just need to get my body to cooperate. She felt exhausted from all the emotions that overwhelmed her. She continued to try and move her fingers, but they lay limp on the bed next to her. Orlando continued to hold her and talk to her. He moved to re-position himself a couple times, but her never left the bed or let go of her. Kellie dropped off to the gentle lull of his voice in her ear.
Kellie woke with a start. She listened and realized that she didn’t hear Orlando’s voice anymore. She almost panicked until she realized there was a weight next to her and someone breathing into the crook of her neck. He’s asleep! Poor guy he’s been here forever and I can’t even tell him I forgive him! It was then that Kellie tried to move her hand and realized that It had indeed moved! She then tried to pry her eyes open. It took more effort than her hand but in the end she was squinting at a white tiled ceiling. Her eyes felt gritty and tears immediately formed to wash them out. Again she moved her hand and was able to wipe her eyes. The room was dimly lit and quiet except for Orlando’s breathing, almost snoring. I need to turn my head. With more effort she managed to turn her head towards Orlando’s face. She was sweating from the exertion but she could now see the top of his head. His hair was tickling her chin. She smiled at her accomplishment and moved her hand to smooth his hair down. Orlando didn’t move when she touched him, so she continued to stroke his hair and study the one side of the room. All the machines had been pushed up against the wall and stood silent. Kellie almost shuddered at the thought of what she must have looked like hooked up to all of them. Kellie’s hand was still stroking Orlando’s hair, but it was tiring and her movements were getting clumsier. Her hand would fall heavily onto his head before she jerked it away. It was one of these movements that woke Orlando up.
He had been dreaming about her. They were sitting on the beach discussing something he couldn’t remember what, when something hit the back of his head. Orlando slowly realized he was curled around Kellie in her hospital bed. Then he felt it again. Someone was stroking his hair and kept resting their hand on his neck. Orlando Slowly raised his head and looked into two emerald colored eyes. Realization quickly took hold and he sat up straight. Kellie’s mouth twitched at the corner. She was trying to smile. Orlando cupped her face and looked into her eyes.
“Are you really awake or am I dreaming?” He asked.
Kellie found her mouth didn’t want to work yet and could only nod slightly. She looked into his eyes and saw all the love he’d been professing. She lifted her hand again and grasped his. It was all she could manage. Her limbs still felt weighted.
Orlando leaned closer and placed a soft kiss on her lips. When he pulled away she saw his eyes were glistening with unshed tears. He clasped her hand and brought it to his own cheek. He closed his eyes and savored the warmth of her hand as the tears began to fall.
