Chapter 21
They passed numerous abandoned cars along the way, at one point, Brody and Rob had to get out of the van and push a car that was blocking the road out of the way, with Renee and Brad keeping watch for zombies. They arrived at the marina and saw that there were hundreds of boats docked there. Many were expensive yachts that looked capable of sailing on the open ocean but since none of them knew anything about it they weren't sure.
“What about fuel?” Asked Brad. “I don't want to get stuck without fuel and then be drift. We could be lost forever like that.”
“Good point but these things have to cross the ocean at some point. How do they get to Europe or Africa? There aren't any gas stations halfway there. They must have enough fuel to last the whole way.” Renee offered up.
“Well regardless of fuel...how do we even get one? Won't we need keys?” Rob asked.
“Well isn't there an office where everyone has to register and pay fees to? Like a management of some sort?” Renee asked.
“Yes there would. And they would have a chart where every boat was docked and they might have keys for the locks. And they usually have a fuel pump for people to buy gas.” Brody spoke up. “So we drive as close to the management office as we can.”
Pompey nodded and they followed the signs to a parking lot that sat fairly close to the office. It was behind a tall fence, with access through a gate in the fence. There was no lock on the fence but Brody came up with the idea to park the van right beside the opening, with the sliding side door at the opening. Then they would be blocking off the only entry to the marina and they would be able to safely unload all of their supplies. Once again Grace, Pompey and Jodie stayed with the van while Rob, Brody, Josie, Renee and Brad went in search of the keys to a yacht.
The door to the office was locked but Brody was able to kick in the door easily enough, there was an alarm panel next to the door but there was no longer any power so it didn't go off. Inside there was a desk, a cash register and Several shelves of hats, clothing of various styles, swim suits and towels and jackets all emblazoned with the name Sun Harbor on them. Behind the desk was a wall with a peg board and hundreds of keys below numbered stickers. While Josie and Rob decided to help themselves to the clothes and merchandise, Renee and Brody started going through the filing cabinets looking for the chart that would tell them where the boats were docked and what keys were for which yacht. Brad kept watch at the door.
“Okay, I have a match. Dock 1267 E has a set of keys here, according to the file that contains a receipt for filling up the tank on the Tequila Sunrise, last week.”
“Let's get a few. We have to make sure we can get on one of them and that they are big enough for us all.” Brody told her. She nodded and paper clipped the keys to the file and continued on. They found files for most of the keys but decided to take only the keys that had receipts for recent re-fueling. Rob and Josie had loaded all the clothes into some plastic bags from behind the desk and then left them just outside the door to the office, wanting their hands free for their guns if they encountered anything.
The Juggernaut was the first boat they found, it was in good shape but was too small, more of a boat for a day trip, having room for only about four people. Renee left the keys for the boat on the deck, in case they had no choice but to return to it and took the file so they could find it without a long search.
The Tequila Sunrise was next, it was huge, obviously large enough for them all but the keys they had fit into the locks on the boat but not into the actual engine, they decided to leave it for now and hope that they could do a search of the boat for the engine key if they needed too.
Josephine's Sailing Machine was next. They were able to access the boat easily, the key to the engine was in the ignition, and she was large enough for them all. The gas gauge said she was still full and she appeared to be 3/4s full of fresh water in her tanks.
“Now if we can sail it then she's perfect. Brody stated.
