Chapter 21
A few weeks later….
Cassy watched out the window as Orlando shoveled the front walkway. The snowstorm the night before had deposited another several inches of snow and ice. Orlando had forbidden her to go out until he had shoveled the walkway. Her knee was still on the wobbly side, but she had finally relented and started wearing her brace. She wanted take a short walk over to her friend’s house next door. Elizabeth was helping her with some quilts for the babies and it was a long process, even if you knew what you were doing. And in her case Liz was an expert, at least that’s what Cassy thought. The two women had gone to a local craft store and bought a lot of very colorful fabric and thread. Cassandra couldn’t wait for the finished product, but it was going to take a long time to get the blankets done, a long time and many pinpricks. It was so nice to keep busy during the winter, as there really wasn’t much to do outside. She still couldn’t walk long distances due to her knee, which annoyed her to no end; she missed her walks. With all the time that she had indoors, Cassy’s crafty side had come out, plus Deanna had already bought many outfits for her “niece and nephew”. Orlando’s mother had sent stuff and Cassandra was sure that her parents would have “tons”, their words, of stuff. Her sister told her in confidence about many of the things her father had bought for his coming grandchildren.
Orlando breathed deeply of the cold air as he shoveled the last bit of snow from the sidewalk. He was glad that the sun was out, especially after last night’s snowstorm. He could see some of their neighbors digging out from the snow. He waved to Steve, Elizabeth’s husband, with the shovel. Steve returned the greeting and returned to his own shoveling with a grin. Orlando would be glad to see spring come, the green of the trees and plants would be a welcome change from the white and gray of winter. He braced himself on the shovel as he thought of the trip that Cassy and he would be making in a few short days. He was excited to be going to see his family, but he was also a little nervous about meeting Cassy’s family face to face. Just as Cassy had spoken to his mother, he had spoken to her father on the phone. Her father was a gentle man, but he was also very protective of his loved ones. Cassy was so like her father; so very protective of those she cared for. Orlando sighed, and then continued with his work and after a few more minutes he finished, then made his way back to the house. He stepped up onto the porch and cleaned off the shovel. He opened the front door and stepped into the warm interior. He kicked off his boots and made his way into the kitchen for some hot tea. He was in the habit of keeping a teakettle full of water on the stove. It made it a lot easier to make tea, especially when your hands were half frozen. As he passed by the living room, he glanced in and saw Cassandra gazing out the window. She had a blanket over her lap and looked comfortably warm. “ Honey, do you want some hot tea?”
Cassy turned towards his voice and smiled as she saw him. “Yes, I would love some, thank you.” She glanced back out the window, and then started, “ Are you finished with the shoveling?”
“ Yeah, I’m finished.” He answered wearily.
“OK, then don’t worry about the tea, I’m heading over to Liz’s. I’ll have tea there. I really want to get those quilts finished sometime in the near future” She struggled to get out of the deep cushions of the chair, she sighed, then yelled “ Orlando, Come get me out of this damn chair!”
Orlando laughed and rolled his eyes as he made his way back to the living room, “What, is the chair trying to eat you again?”
Cassy gave up the struggle and waited for him, “ Stop making fun of me. I don’t why I keep sitting in this darn chair. This happens every time. It happened even before I was pregnant. I should have let Deanna take this stupid chair.” She huffed in annoyance.
Orlando grinned, “You kept the chair because you love it, so stop complaining”
“Whatever.” Cassandra reached up for Orlando's offered hands and let herself be pulled up. It never ceased to amaze her, how strong the slender man was. She smiled as the memory of the last time he pulled her up from the chair went through her mind. She let herself be enfolded in his strong arms and laid her head on his chest.
“I love you.”
I love you too.”
She pulled away to kiss his lips and was rewarded with a wonderfully satisfying response from him. A stab of desire in her lower belly made her sigh. She knew that if they were careful of her injured knew they could make love, but Liz was expecting her anytime.
Orlando pulled away slightly, enough so that he could speak, but still kept them connected, “Liz is expecting you, right?”
“ Yes, I really need to go.” She mumbled against his soft lips. She kissed him again quickly, and then pulled away. “Maybe later when I get back, we can finish what we started...” She gave him a smoldering look as she started to pull away, her hands sliding slowly down his chest.
“Sweetheart, if you keep looking at me in that way, you won't be leaving this room.” He growled.
“Uh-oh, then I better get going.” She grinned, tossing her hair as she turned to go put her coat and boots on. She heard him inhale deeply, then begin to chuckle.
“Yes, love. You do that.”
She smiled the entire time as she stepped into her boots; she was still able to bend, but only just barely. She was able to get by only because of the step stool that Orlando had put near the door just for the purpose of her putting on her shoes. She knew that within the next couple of weeks even the stool wouldn't allow her to bend the slight amount that she was able to now. When the time came, Orlando or whoever was available would have to help her or she would have to wear slip on shoes. She was leaning towards the slip on shoes. She pulled on her coat, put her hat on and gloves, and then opened the door to step out on the freshly shoveled and salted porch. She shut the door behind her and leaned on the door for a moment. The air was cold and crisp; the smell of the snow and pine tree that stood near the house was strong. She inhaled deeply, then made her way down the steps and onto the sidewalk. She walked slowly and carefully, but it only took a few minutes to make it to Liz and Steve's home. She knocked then entered calling out a hello.
Liz came out from the living room with a smile, “Hi there, I was starting to wonder if you were coming or not.” She said as she helped her pregnant friend out of her coat and boots. “Do you want some tea, I have some of the decaffeinated tea that you like.”
“Yes, please. Thank you so much, oh do you have anymore of that awesome wildflower honey?”
“Of course I do, I always stock up on honey before winter. You should know that by now.” She chuckled as she led the way to her homey kitchen, “But then with Steve's sweet tooth, you never know.” Both woman laughed, Cassandra was still chuckling as she sat at the table. The large windows overlooked the couple's side yard, just as her and Orlando's did, but the colors in the kitchen were different. Instead of the blue and yellow in her own kitchen, Liz's kitchen was a warm orange, almost adobe color. It was decorated in a southwest motif that was instantly welcoming and comfortable.
“Here you go, decaffeinated Earl Grey, with wildflower honey.” She placed the steaming mug down in front of her friend. “I still don't know how you can drink that, but as long as you like it, I'm all good.”
“What do you mean, it tastes almost exactly like the regular stuff.” She responded, with a grin. This was an ongoing “argument”. She knew that Liz was just teasing and she teased back, “ Well, I don't know how you can drink that green stuff that you drink sometimes.”
“Whatever.” Liz stuck her tongue out, and then giggled. Steve walked in at the tail end of the conversation.
“ Are you teasing Cassy about her tea again, Liz?” He leaned on the island counter in the middle of the kitchen. “Speaking of tea, don't you dare use up all my honey.”
Cassy frowned dramatically, putting a bit of “whine” in her voice, “You would take away a pregnant woman's honey.” Her lip wobbled and she burst into fake crying.
“Whahhhhhh” She wailed loudly. Both Liz and Steve laughed uproariously at Cassy's antics. After another couple of seconds, Cassandra stopped wailing and picked up her tea mug, taking a sip of the warm liquid. “ Perfect as always Liz, thank you.” She smiled.
The next couple of hours passed without any significant happenings, other then pricked and cramped fingers. By the time they were ready to stop for the day, the quilt was almost finished, with only the backing to be completed.
Cassy spread the colorful blanket out on the table and admired it. She was so proud of the work she did. Of course with Liz's help, she would have the quilt finished within the next few days. Hopefully before they left to see her family. She folded the blanket and put it in the storage container. Liz would put it away when she ready to clean up her own crafts. She stood up, just as Steve came in, “ Hey Cassy, the temp has dropped a bit, so the sidewalk is freezing up. I'll help you home, if that's okay with you?”
“Thanks, that would be great. I was hoping I'd get home before that happened, but Liz and I got to talking about patterns again.” She sighed, shrugging her shoulders.
She pushed her glasses back up her nose and stood, “ I better get going, Orlando's probably starting to get worried.” She walked towards the entrance of the house slowly; her knee was a bit sore from standing so much. Liz followed them out to help her friend get her boots on. She thought to herself that maybe she should place a chair or step stool near the door. She knew that Cassy hated having to rely on anyone for help. She made up her mind to find something sturdy and safe for Cassy to use.
Cassy put her coat, gloves and hat on after Liz helped her with her boots. Steve was dawning his winter coat and gloves as well, but wasn't putting on a hat. “Hey, you better have a hat in that pocket that you going to put on that head of yours.” She glared with her hands on her hips.”
Steve withheld a laugh,” Yes ma'am, I do.” He reached in his pocket and pulled out a black knit hat and pulled it on. “ Is this acceptable Ma’am?”
Cassy pursed her lips,” Yes it will do, smart ass.” She hugged Liz goodbye, telling her that she would see her again soon, then opened the door and stepped out into the cold evening. Steve followed her out, shutting the door behind him. They made their way carefully out to the sidewalk, his arm around her waist. They were walking up the stairs when the door opened and Orlando stood there. He smiled, “ There you are. I was wondering if I'd have to come get you.” Steve handed her over to the dark haired man with a grin.
“Sorry, honey, just lost track of time.” She shrugged. “Thanks again Steve. Have a good night.” She waved goodbye at her tall red haired friend.
“Good night Steve and thank you for bringing her home,” Orlando said.
“No problem, good night you two.” He started down the steps toward home as Cassy and Orlando entered their home.
After Cassy was divested of her coat, gloves, hat and boots, she slipped her feet into her slippers and started toward the kitchen.
“So,” Cassandra started, “ are you cooking tonight or are we ordering out? My knee is a little on the sore side, I did a little too much standing while we were quilting” She sat down at the slightly cluttered table.
Orlando grinned, he knew his fiancée’s moods very well, her mentioning take away, he knew the correct answer was that they were ordering dinner to be delivered. “We can order whatever you want, love. Actually I wouldn’t mind some Indian food. We could order then I’ll go pick it up, instead of paying an extra delivery charge.”
“My dear you know me so well, I’ve been craving Chicken Saag something crazy! And lots of rice, oh and don’t forget the samosas and the naan bread, with plenty of sauce. Wow, I’m starving! All this talk of food is making me ravenous. So yes, I think it would be a great idea for you to go pick it up.” She looked out the window, “I hope the roads aren’t to bad”
“ I doubt it and the restaurant isn’t far, I’ll only be gone for a few minutes, love. Plus while I was out shoveling I saw the salt trucks out, so it’ll be fine.” He moved up behind her and dropped a kiss on the top of her head. “ Let me get the food called in.”
Cassy listened as Orlando made the call and put in their order; then glanced out the window again. It was starting to snow again and from what she remembered from the news, they would get another few inches of snow over night. Orlando puttered around the kitchen, clearing off the table, putting dishes away from the dishwasher. She felt guilty about not being able to help him as much as she wanted to. But anytime she tried, she would be given the “look”. The look of course meant for her to sit the hell down. Orlando had started her in physical therapy a few weeks ago and her knee was responding well to treatment. However, that didn’t mean that she was allowed to over do it. Plus she had the added weight of the twins, so that meant she only exercised her knee when she was supposed to. And always wore her brace when she needed to up and about. There was talk of replacement of her knee altogether. She had been expecting this kind of talk for a long time actually, during her teenage years she had sprained her knee so many times the doctor took her out of any type of sports. The only thing she was allowed in her gym class was walking and riding a bike. Well, the bike was out of the question for her, seeing as the damn thing was one of the reasons she had sprained her knee in the past.
So because she was only able to do minimal exercise for most of her teenage years, her weight crept up. She managed to keep it within the slightly overweight category with her eating habits and walking. She sighed as she thought about her teenage years and wondered if her knee would ever be normal. She doubted it and gave a mental shrug. Cassy would just have to be careful and she knew that was going to be hard, especially when she had twins to chase after in a short time. She smiled as she looked down at her belly and gave it a rub.
Orlando sat down across from her; he smiled as he watched her rubbing her “bump” as she called it. He had never in a million years thought that would fall in love so deeply with anyone. And have a family…well that hadn’t been anything he’d really thought of. For most of his adult years, he’d been so engrossed in schoolwork and becoming a doctor, that dating was kept at a minimum. Anytime there had been even a hint of the girl wanting to turn serious, he’d ended the relationship. He remembered a conversation he’d had with his mother right after he’d finished Medical School. She had told him that the woman that would capture his heart would be special and he wouldn’t be able to talk himself out of the relationship. That it would hit him like a ton of rocks and boy did it. Cassy must have felt his eyes on her, because she looked up and met his gaze. Her deep brown eyes filled with emotion and she mouthed, “ I love you.”
“ I love you too,” he whispered as he stood. He came around the table and went to his knees. He rested his head lightly on her growing belly, listening to her heartbeat. Sometimes her could feel the twins moving, or kicking. The feel of a little hand or foot pressing on his skin was an amazing feeling. He felt his eyes start to sting with oncoming tears…. just as her stomach made a very loud growl. He sat up with a laugh. Cassy laughed too.
“ I told you that I’m really hungry. Do you think the food is ready?”
“I doubt it, it’s only been about fifteen minutes and you know that it takes longer then that. I’ll leave soon though.” He assured her as he got to his feet. “ Do you want to stay here in the kitchen or come sit on the couch with me?”
“ I’ll come sit with you, I want to watch the evening news.” She took his offered hand to stand. Her knee gave a slight twinge as she walked to the living room. Yep, she had definitely over did it. She would need to elevate and ice it again. As she sat on the couch she asked, “Could you bring the ottoman over here and maybe an ice bag?”
Orlando brought the ottoman over and help her place her leg in a comfortable position, then examined her leg. “ It’s a little swollen. Cassandra, you have to be more careful or you’ll take even longer to heal. No more standing while you are quilting. In fact I’ll have a talk with Liz. You must have told her that you were fine, so she didn’t push it. Do I have that right?” He asked sternly.
Cassy pouted slightly, “Of course you have it right, why do even bother to ask? Yes daddy, I’ll not stand while I’m quilting. Cross my heart,” She crossed her finger over heart. She mentally cursed, she knew better. At this rate it would take her forever to heal, damn it. They were leaving for Florida in a few days.
Orlando went to the kitchen to retrieve the ice bag, as he headed back towards the living room, he heard a knock at the front door.
“ Orlando, someone is knocking at the door,” Cassy called out, he knew that she was most likely trying to get up from the couch. “ I heard, don’t get up.” He responded.
He looked out the small window in the door and saw that is was Liz. He opened the door with a smile. “ Hey, what’s up, come in, come in.”
“ Hey guys, I’m sorry to bother you guys, but I wanted to tell you that our phone is out for some reason. Steve is on the cell phone trying to find out what is going on. You may want to check your phone too.” She said as she kicked off her boots and unzipped her coat. Liz went into the living room; she saw that Cassy had her leg elevated, “Damn it Cassy, why didn’t you tell me that you were…”
Cassy held up a hand to interrupt her friend, “My dear almost husband has already read me the riot act and I’ve promised to be more careful. And I will, I want to get better more then anyone, believe me. I will take it easy, I promise. And Orlando, isn’t about time you go pick up our dinner?”
He nodded as he placed the ice pack on her swollen knee. “ Yes, “ I’ll head out in a couple of minutes, let me check the phone first.” He picked up the phone and listened for a minute, “ It’s dead too, great! Let me call the phone company too.”
“ Honey, I can do it, just grab my cell phone from my purse, you go, get our food. Liz, would you mind hanging around until he gets back? I would really appreciate it.”
“Sure no problem,” Liz responded as she sat next to Cassy on the couch. “ I’m sure Steve will be over in a few minutes anyway. We ordered take out too, he was going to call and add something to our order, but of course our phone was dead. We ordered Indian.” She grinned.
Cassy laughed, “Great minds think a like, so did we. When did you order?”
“Oh just a few minutes after you left, it’s ready by now.”
“Hey why don’t I grab Steve, well go over together to pick up our food, then you guys can eat with us, how’s that?” Orlando asked as he put on his coat.
Liz and Cassy exchanged a look, “Sure” the both responded with a grin.
“ Okay then it’s settled, we’ll be back in a few, don’t have to much fun with out us.” He came back into the living room for a kiss from his fiancée, then made his way out into the cold night, locking the door behind him.
