Chapter 21: An Extended Family
∞♥♥♥♥∞
I couldn’t believe how the time had flown. The twins had just celebrated their fourth birthday. I hated how they were growing up so fast! I knew that Chris and I had to cherish their childhood, for it would be gone before we knew it.
“I’m glad we got her that doll. She has barely let go of it since we gave it to her,” Chris said, hugging me from behind and resting his chin on my shoulder.
I smiled as we watched Bliss sitting on the couch with the new doll we had given her for her birthday. It was really realistic looking. She had named it Ariel after her favorite Disney princess. She was currently feeding her a bottle. It was a doll that had a hole in it’s mouth so that you could feed it a liquid, and the liquid would come out in its diaper. Right now, it was filled with milk, but we only let Bliss feed the doll milk occasionally. After all, we didn’t want to waste the milk. Usually, Bliss would feed the doll water. “Before we know it, she’ll have a real baby of her own to feed.”
Chris released me. “Ugh! Don’t say that. She has plenty of years until she has a kid of her own.”
I smiled. “You’re right. It just seems like she is growing up so fast.”
Chris nodded. “We just have to make the best of the time we have with them as kids.”
We looked over at Colin, who was watching TV while swinging back and forth on his rocking horse. We had gotten him and Bliss each one for their birthday. We had also gotten them both a motorized car now that they were old enough for them. Bliss’ was hot pink, and Colin’s was bright blue. They were only allowed to ride them outside though.
We had given Colin a couple new matchbox cars and a track complete with a car elevator and ramps as well. That was to even it out since we had gotten Bliss her doll.
We wanted to get them one more thing, but we weren’t sure what. We figured we’d take the twins to the toy store and let them pick something out. Though, we hadn’t gotten there yet, and they had been four for a week now.
Suddenly, a commercial for saving the abused animals came on.
“I hate that shit. It’s so sad. I hate seeing abused animals,” I said. I wasn’t the world’s biggest animal lover, but I still liked animals, and hated seeing them get abused. Animal abusers really ticked me off.
“Shit!” Colin said.
“Colin say a naughty word,” Bliss stated. “Daddy say naughty word first.”
I blushed.
“Blake, remember we talked about not using that kind of language around the kids,” Chris chastised.
“Sorry.” I turned to Colin. “Baby boy, don’t say that word. I know I said it, but I was bad.”
Colin looked at me. “I sorry, Dada.”
I smiled, and gently stroked his hair. “It’s okay. Just don’t say it again.”
“You know, we shouldn’t swear either. We’re setting a bad example for the kids,” Chris said.
I nodded. “I know. Sorry. It’s a force of habit. I always thought that parents who swear, but expect their kids not to are hypocritical. Now look at me.”
Chris stroked my hair. “It’s okay, grown up boy. Just don’t say it again,” he teased.
I laughed, and playfully pushed him. “You’re hilarious.”
Chris grinned. “Aren’t I though?”
“I want a kitty,” Bliss said, looking at the TV. A white cat with a bloody nose was displayed.
“No, I want a doggy!” Colin said as they showed a sickly looking dog with his ribs showing, being pulled from a cage.
“Kitty!” Bliss yelled.
“Doggy!” Colin hollered.
“Kitty!”
“Doggy!”
Chris and I both chuckled.
“Man, our baby cakes have little tempers on them, don’t they?” Chris asked.
I nodded. “You got that right!” I smirked at the twins.
“Well, we have been wanting to get them another birthday gift. And we’ve been talking about getting them a dog even before they were born,” Chris reasoned.
I looked at him. “Are you saying we should get them a dog?”
Chris nodded. “Well, a dog for Colin, and a cat for Bliss. We can teach them early how to care for them. We can walk the dog with them, and they can help us feed both pets.”
I wrinkled my nose. “A cat? I don’t know. I’m not much of a cat person.”
“I prefer dogs better myself, but cats aren’t bad. They can be cute. We could go to a shelter, and give a home to two pets who really need one,” Chris stated.
“Kitty!”
“Doggy!”
I watched as the twins were pushing each other now.
I sighed. “Hey, you two. If you want a kitty and doggy, you better stop fighting. Otherwise you’ll go in time out, and get nothing.”
Bliss and Colin immediately stopped fighting.
“I get a kitty?” Bliss asked.
“I get a doggy?” Colin asked.
I grinned and nodded. “Yes, if you’re good.”
Bliss and Colin both smiled so brightly.
“Yay!” Bliss said, clapping her hands and laughing.
“Doggy!” Colin said, also clapping his hands and laughing.
They ran over to us then.
Bliss hugged my legs, and Colin hugged Chris’ legs.
Chris and I grinned at each other.
“We’re making the right decision,” he said to me.
I smiled down at Bliss. “Yeah, yeah, but if we get an indoor cat, you’re going to be the one changing the litter box; not me.”
“Fine, then you can be the one to scoop the dog’s poop and put it in a baggy when we take it for a walk,” Chris stated.
I sighed. “Joy.”

So it was settled. The twins were so excited about getting new pets that we decided to get the pets that very day.
So, we went out to lunch, and then went to the grocery store to get the pets supplies.
First, we got a crate to bring the cat home in, and a leash for the dog. Then, we got new food bowls, dry food, wet food, treats, toys, and beds.
“How about pet shampoo and flea medication?” Blake asked.
“We can get them prescription medication. If we’re going to get them flea medication, we might as well not be cheap about it,” I said.
“Well, we’re getting the shampoo at least. I don’t want that dog smelling up the house. I’ll wash the dog, and let you can take care of washing the cat,” Blake said as he put two bottles of pet shampoo into our cart.
I smirked. “Be my guest. I don’t have to bathe the cat. Cats bathe themselves.”
“How is licking yourself bathing?” Blake asked.
“I wouldn’t know. I never tried it before,” I quipped.
“Well, I lick you all over your body, and you still take showers,” Blake reasoned.
I blushed. There was an old lady in the same aisle, looking at cat toys. I knew she could hear us. There was just something about the way she was standing that told me she was eavesdropping.
“Such a kidder,” I said with an embarrassed laugh as I quickly hurried Blake out of the aisle.
“What about litter boxes and litter? And litter scoopers?” Blake asked.
“Next aisle,” I said firmly.
“What is the big rush?” Blake asked, totally oblivious to the sheer humiliation he had just caused me.
“You didn’t have to say that part about licking me all over, you know. There was an old lady behind us that got an earful,” I explained once we were in the safety of the next aisle, which, thankfully, was empty except for us and the twins.
“Oh, please. That old bag? I doubt she could hear if I said it right in her ear,” Blake said with a smirk.
Suddenly, we heard someone loudly clear her throat.
We both looked to see the same old lady, only about a foot away from us. She must have come down the aisle from the other end.
The lady didn’t say anything, but she cast Blake a dirty look as she reached past him to grab a container of litter.
Blake blushed.
“Next time, don’t run your mouth like that,” I said to him once the lady was gone.
Blake grinned. “Come on. You know you love when I run my mouth..all over your body. Especially over your—” His reply was muffled as I placed my hand over his mouth. He licked my hand, and I removed it.
“You’re disgusting! I can’t believe you licked me,” I said, wiping my palm against my jeans.
Blake raised his eyebrows up and down. “You never complained about me licking you before.”
“Enough,” I said, rolling my eyes.
Blake smirked, and tuned to face the litter. “There are so many kinds. What is the difference between them all? Let’s just get the cheapest kind and be done with it.”
I stopped him from pulling out a cheap box of litter. “Wait. We have to get a good brand. A cheap brand will make the house smell.”
“Well, then, you pick one out. I’m already regretting our decision to get pets,” he muttered.
“You have no patience,” I said as I scanned the boxes of litter.
“Why do some say scoopable and some don’t? I thought the whole idea of litter was so that you could scoop it,” Blake quipped.
I laughed. “Good point.” I decided on one that claimed to smell fresh no matter what, was scoopable, and flushable, and then put it in the cart. I got a green litter box with a matching green scooper, and finally, we were ready to go.
We went to the checkout line and paid once it was our turn.
“Can we get the kitty now?” Bliss asked as we drove out of the grocery store parking lot, minutes later.
“And the doggy? Colin chimed in.
“Yep! We’ll go get them, but you guys be nice when it comes to picking one out. No fighting over what you get. You both have to agree, all right?” I asked.
“All right, Daddy!” both twins said in unison.
I smiled at them in the review mirror.
“We’re not getting any nasty cat who claws. I’ll tell you that much,” Blake grumbled.
I rolled my eyes and shook my head, smiling nonetheless. I bet the cat would grow on him once we got it. If not, well, it would be interesting to see who won in a fight—Blake or the cat. My bet was on the cat. Ha!

When we got to the shelter, the lady behind the front desk, Linda, directed us to the cat room first.
“We have just over two hundred cats, so you have plenty to choose from. So many people abandon their cats. It’s sad,” Linda told us.
“That is sad,” Chris agreed.
“We take good care of them here, but it’s always nice to see one being adopted by a loving family. Do you have any particular color in mind?” Linda asked.
“Um, I’m not sure. We’re kind of just going for whatever cat our daughter likes, and our son agrees upon,” Chris answered.
“Sounds like a good plan.” Linda winked at Bliss.
We entered the cat room, and more than half the cats came over to us.
One particular long haired, pure white cat rubbed against my leg.
I wrinkled my nose. “Go rub up against her.” I nodded towards Bliss. “She’s the one you have to butter up. Actually, you can butter me up by staying away from me,” I told the cat.
In response, the cat started to purr, and rubbed up against me again.
I sighed, and gave in. I bent down to pet the cat.
“Kitties!” Bliss giggled, and released Chris’ hand, for Chris had been holding her hand. She ran off to pet every kitty she could reach. The cats were more than happy to return the affection. The poor things appeared to be starved for it.
I stood up, and sat down on the bench that was in the room.
Colin sat next to me.
No sooner had Colin and I sat down did we both have a lap full of cats. The cats had simply helped themselves to our laps.
That darned white cat was there again, and it stood up on its hind legs and put its front paws on my chest. Then it snuggled its head against my chest.
I pet its head. "What's up with you?”
Chris smiled, noticing this. “I think it likes you.”
“Yeah, well…” I trailed off. It was kind of cute for a cat I guess.
Bliss looked at the cats for a good ten minutes.
“All right, baby girl, do you know which one you want yet?” Chris asked her.
Bliss tapped an index finger to her lips, then turned to me. She smiled when she saw me petting the white cat. “I want that one!” She pointed to the white bundle of fur in my lap.
Chris smiled. “Well, it’s already bonding with Dada at least.”
“The feeling’s not mutual,” I muttered, though deep down I didn’t exactly mind all that much.
Chris held the cat, and knelt down low enough so that Bliss could pet it. “Are you sure?”
Bliss pet the cat and smiled. “I want that one, Daddy!”
“Do you like this one, Colin?” Chris asked, turning to face our son.
Colin shrugged. “I don’t care. I want Doggy!”
Chris grinned. “All right! This one it is then.”
“That one is a girl. Her name is Snowbell for our records, but when singing the adoption papers, the name can be changed. I know that most people who adopt want to name their own cat,” Linda explained.
“How old is she?” Chris asked.
“She is only a year old,” Linda answered.
“Perfect! She has a lot of years left in her then,” Chris said.
Linda nodded and smiled. “Indeed she does. Well, if you want to put her in the crate, we can come out and get those papers signed. There is a forty-five dollar fee for cats, and a fifty-five dollar fee for dogs, but all our animals have been spayed or neutered, and are up to date on all their shots. They all have a clean bill of health.”
Chris nodded. “Sounds good!”
I helped Chris get the cat I the crate, then we left the cat room.
Linda looked at Chris as she sat behind her desk. “If you want, Gregory can take them to look at the dogs while you sign the adoption papers for the cat,” she said, referring to the kids and me, I assumed.
Chris nodded. “Sure.”
“I stay with you, Daddy,” Bliss said, hanging onto Chris’ leg.
“Are you sure you don’t want to go help pick out the doggy?” Chris asked her.
“I stay with Daddy and kitty,” she said.
“All right,” Chris agreed.
Colin tugged on my hand. “Let’s go pick out the doggy, Dada!”
I smiled down at him. “All right.” I looked up at Gregory. “I guess we’re ready to see the dogs.”
Gregory nodded, and smiled at us. “Right this way.”
Colin and I followed him down the hall and towards a door that had loud barking at the other end.
I wondered what would happen if the dogs ever got into the cat room. I was guessing fur would be flying. Now that would be a sight to see. Ha!
B∞C
“Do you want to keep her name Snowbell, or do you want to change it?” I asked Bliss.
“I like Snowbell,” Bliss answered.
“You sure?” I asked.
Bliss nodded.
“Okay!” I took the papers Linda sent me, and signed them. I then gave her the forty-five dollars in cash.
“Thank you so much! Congratulations. Snowbell is officially yours, sweetie,” Linda said, standing up and looking down over the counter at Bliss.
Bliss smiled shyly, and grabbed onto my leg.
“She’s shy,” I explained to Linda.
Linda grinned, and sat back in her chair. “It’s all right. Most kids are at that age.” She winked.
“Well, I’m going to go put Snowbell in the car, and then come back in and see how my husband and our son are doing with picking out a dog,” I told her.
“Good idea,” she said.
So, I did as I said I was going to. I put the cat in the car, then took Bliss’ hand and led her back into the animal shelter, and down the hall, finally into the dog room.
We found Blake and Colin standing in front of a cage that contained a French bull dog.
“I want this one, Dada,” Colin said.
“Are you sure? He is kind of cute,” Blake stated.
“I’m sure,” Colin said, clapping his hands together.
I smiled. The dog kind of reminded me of my old dog, Tommy. He was really old now, and lived with my parents. I didn’t get to see him much. Having a dog that looked like him at home with me would be nice—the next best thing to Tommy.
B∞C
“All right. We’ll take that one,” I said to Gregory.
Gregory smiled. “We just got this one in, actually. He is a year and a half. His name is Ted, but you can change it. We only name them here to keep track of whom is who. He is a boy, and he is a French bull dog, in case you didn’t know.”
I smirked at Colin. “Do you like the name Ted, or do you want to give him a French name like Pierre?”
Colin laughed. “Pierre? I like Pierre.” He clapped his hands together.
I shrugged. “Really? I was just joking. Well, then, Pierre it is.”
Chris looked down at Bliss. “Do you like this doggy?”
Bliss smiled, and walked over to pet the dog. “I like Pierre.”
It was settled then.
We walked back into the main room, and I forked over the cash for Pierre, while Chris signed the papers.
“Congratulations! You have a new doggy now,” Linda said, bending down over the counter to smile at Colin.
Colin smiled. “Thank you,” he said as he hugged Pierre's neck.
We left the shelter and drove home.
The twins were so happy! They kept giggling and laughing the whole way back.
Chris and I smiled at each other. I knew the that what he had said earlier was right. We had made the right decision in getting pets for our twins.
B∞C
When we got home, we let the cat out of the crate, and immediately, she started sniffing around the house. I was a little worried how she would react to Pierre, but neither pet seemed to care about the other. They were doing their own thing. Pierre was currently trying to chase his tail.
“Pierre funny!” Bliss said, giggling.
“Snowbell went in Daddy and Dada’s room,” Colin stated.
“What?” Blake asked. He quickly walked to our room. “Get off my bed, you little punket!” he said.
I walked over to the room, and smirked when I saw that the cat had decided to curl up into a little ball and sleep on Blake’s pillow.
“She must detect your scent. She likes you,” I said to Blake.
“Yeah, well she can like me off of my bed and pillow,” he muttered. Still, he made no attempt to move her. “If she didn’t look so cute sleeping there, I would move her,” he said.
I smiled, and wrapped an arm around him. I kissed the top of his head. He was a softy at heart, no matter how hard he tried to hide it. I loved him for it.
“Colin, no ride doggy!” Bliss cried out.
Blake and I looked at each other, and then ran back to the family room, where we saw Colin riding the dog as if he were horseback riding.
“Colin, get off him! We don’t ride the doggy. He’s not a horse,” Blake gently scolded.
“Sorry, Dada,” Colin said, getting off the dog. Pierre hadn’t seemed to mind. In fact, the way he was panting, he actually looked like he was smiling,
“It’s okay,” Blake said.
“I want a horsey!” Bliss stated.
Colin grinned. “Me too!”
Blake and I looked at each other. We grinned, both getting the same idea.
We then ran to the twins (me taking Colin, and Blake taking Bliss), and placed them on their rocking horses.
“A horsey? this is the only horsey you're getting. We just bought you a doggy, Silly. No horsey!” I said to Colin, ticking his ribs.
“And you have a pretty kitty. A horsey is too big for the house,” Blake said to Bliss, ticking her ribs as well.
Both twins were giggling by now, and Blake and I grinned at each other.
I was so happy to have Blake and the twins in my life, and I took happiness in knowing that I would always have them in my life.
Now, with our new pets, we were all one big happy family, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
