Everlasting Love(Pt21)
The dawning of a new day brightened on the horizon. The rising sun cast long rays of sunlit dancing around as it struggled to peek through the scattered fluffy clouds. Deep reddish-orange, giving way to a lighter color as the sun rose higher.
Joe landed hard on the ground and sprinted for the door, slamming hard against the heavy steel. He started pounding on it with his fist.
“Open the door!” yelling and pounding harder. He felt the heat slowly rising in his body, as the sky grew brighter. Joe hazards a glance behind him and quickly shielded his sensitive eyes.
The sun was just minutes away from breaking over the building behind him. Joe pounded harder, screaming into the crack between the door and it’s frame. He spun around when the ray of sunlit hit his arm, he shrank as far away from it as he could in the corner. He watched it travel across the top section of the door, closer to him.
“Shit.” He began pounding again when it touched him. Gritting his teeth against the burning was all he could do, there was nowhere for him to go. He jerked again as another struck his bare shoulder. Sweat beaded his forehead as his body became hotter.
“Open the fucking door!” he managed to scream around the pain.
Without warning the door swung open, causing Joe to fall backwards into the darkness of the build, the door slammed shut behind him, blocking out the sun.
Joe lay there, trying to catch his breath, pushing away the pain of the red angry burns on his arm and shoulder.
Strong hands under his arms hauled him to his feet.
“aahh…shit, take it easy.” Joe hissed.
“Joe?”
He cracked his eyes to peer at the man in front of him. “Tiny.”
“What are you doing here?”
“I-I wasn’t paying attention and got caught in…”
Tiny held him up and dragged him deeper into the building. Easing him down in the booth, Tiny hurriedly grabbed a drink for him. Joe gulped it down and rested his head on the table.
“It’s not like you to get caught outside when the sun is coming up. Are you alright?” Tiny voiced his concern.
Joe rolled he’s head back and forth.
“How is Sav?”
Joe sat up and looked at him. “Not good Tiny, not good at all. Nothing has changed…its getting harder to feel him, no one's blood works. Rachel showed up last night.”
”Rachel?” Tiny frowned.
“Yeah Rachel, one of The Elders. Have you ever meet her?”
”No, never met any of them actually. I hear they are very secretive.”
Joe shrugged his shoulder. “I guess. We’ve met them all, long time ago, occasional contact over the years. Rachel just shows up out of the blue, tells us she knows about Sav and knows of a cure.”
”What!? Your kidding, she can cure him with her blood?”
Joe propped his forehead in the palm his hand, staring down at the table. “No, she can’t do that.”
“But you just said…”
”The blood has to come from a newborn baby.”
“No way.” Tiny’s stomach flipped at the implications. “but that’s…”
”Against The Code, we know that. The worst part about it all, I have to be the one to make the decision to proceed.”
“That’s not hard Joe, say yes and get Savage well.”
Joe let his head drop from his hand, he leaned back in the booth and slid sideways to lie down. “I don’t know if I can.”
Tiny couldn’t believe what he heard come from Joe’s mouth. “Can I ask what will happen if this isn’t done?”
“Sav will eventually die.”
Joe was yanked from the seat. In the forty or so years since he had known Tiny, Joe could never recall a time where he saw him angry, raised his voice in anger at anyone. To look at him now, it was there, etched on his face, glowed in his brown eyes.
“You’re going to let him die, because you can’t make a simple decision.”
”It’s not that simple Tiny. This blood has to come from a newborn…a baby, not just a little, but all of it, not just one, but many."
“Who is more important to you Joseph? Sav or the lives of mortal children? Can you stand here and honestly tell me that you would rather bare the pain of losing the love of your immortal life.”
”What about those innocent babies that will not get the chance to grow up, see the world, to love and have families of their own?”
”You don’t think about it, you can’t think about it. You have taken innocent lives before, in your years as a vampire, to sustain your life.”
“But I…I don’t know if I can make that decision right now. I need a little more time to think about it.
“You have to make it quick Joe. Think about Sav, flood your mind with only him and of his love for you. That will get you through this decision you have to make.”
“Your right…” Joe started, throwing his arms up, only to let them fall back to his sides, his voice broke and new tears spilled down his face. “I wont be able to let him go, if I do, what’s the use in me living anymore if Rick isn’t there to share it with me.”
Tiny pulled Joe into his arms and held him tight against his massive chest. Joe grew limp in his arms as he cried again in as many days. Tiny effortlessly picked him up, taking him downstairs to where he lived below the White Horse Pub. Tiny gently laid Joe on his bed, removing his shoes and pulling the blankets from under him. Joe was nearly asleep when Tiny was leaving the room, his hand poised over the light switch when Joe’s soft raspy voice stopped him.
“Don’t go. I don’t want to be alone today.”
Tiny turned the light off and went back over to the bed, sitting down the bed dipped low from his weight. “I’ll stay until you fall asleep.”
Joe reached behind him and pulled back the blankets, indicating that he wanted Tiny to lay with him.
“Um…Joe, I don’t think that is a good idea.”
“Please.” Joe whispered.
Tiny gathered himself and removed his shoes, sliding in the bed to lie on his side. He grew nervous when Joe scooted closer, grabbing his wrist to pull his arm around him. Taking a deep breath, Joe let it out slowly and waited for sleep to take him in darkness.
Tiny laid there well into the day, listening to Joe’s slow breathing. For years he had tried to get Joe in bed with him and now that he is, Joe sleeps. Tiny understood that he was under duress with Sav and just needed a friend right now. If that’s what he needed, then Tiny vowed silently to be just that, to be there for him when Joe needed him. Tightening his arms around Joe’s sleeping form, Tiny let sleep pull him under.

The following night, Joe stood at the bar, waiting on his drink. When it was sat before him he picked it up, he turned to glance around the crowded pub. Spotting a small group of people huddled in one of the booths, Joe saw them passing around something. He turned back to the bartender and ordered a bottle of blood wine. Keeping his eye on the group, he weaved his way through the crowd, stopping a few times to speak with people he knew.
Making it to the table, he looked over the group of a woman and two men.
“Is this a private party or can anyone join?”
“Well it depends…” one guy started, looking at the other two. “…whether or not you bring anything with you.”
Joe held up the bottle. “Will this do?”
“Oh some of the good stuff.” He smiled at Joe. “You can warm this spot.” Patting the seat next to him.
Joe slid into the seat and popped the cork.
“Name’s Paul, that’s Loran and Jason.”
“Joe, nice to meet you.”
“Where are you from Joe?” Loran asked taking in his handsome face.
“Here in Dublin, live down the road a ways.” He poured the blood wine into each of their glasses.
“How long have you been part of the Community?” Paul sipped his drink.
“Since 2004.”
“You’re still a young one then. All of us are over 300.” Paul told him.
“So, what were you passing around before I came over?”
Loran glanced at Paul he shrugged his shoulders slightly. “We didn’t think anyone saw us.”
“Past career, I watched people.”
”What did you do that required you to watch people?” Loran leaned on the table.
“Lead singer for Def Leppard.” Joe replied.
Jason snapped his fingers in excitement. “That’s why you looked so familiar. I remember you guys, went to a lot of your concerts back in the day. Man you guys rocked.”
”Thanks. We still miss that scene.”
”I read that four of the members died.” Loran said.
“Vivian Campbell is, Rick Allen is still alive, kicking back in his very old age here. The other’s…..are around somewhere.”
“You mean they’re part of the community?” Jason asked.
“Yes.” Joe nodded looking down at his glass.
“That is just way too cool.” Jason laughed.
“You’ll have to excuse Jason, he was heavy into the 60’s and 70’.”
Joe chuckled. “Who wasn’t?”
Loran slid a small plastic bottle toward him. “To get back to your question. This is what we were passing around.”
Joe picked up the bottle and twisted the cap off. “What is it?”
“The second best thing, next to taking blood.” Paul started. “Rubies.”
“Rubies, never heard of them.”
“Not many have, but they’ve been around for awhile. You did drugs before right?”
”Yeah, before I came across, wild tours and parties. We can take this kind of stuff?”
Paul smiled. “Yeah we can and these are much better than any of that mortal stuff.”
”How much?” Joe asked dumping a few in his hand.
“As many as you want, as long as you supply the next few bottles of the good stuff.” Paul replied. “But just take one at a time.”
Joe tossed one in his mouth and followed it with blood wine.
“You don’t want to know what it does first? Loran asked.
“No, I’ll find out.” Joe signal to the waitress, a short time later three bottles were sat on the table.
“Loran would you like to dance?” Joe finally asked, after they had been talking about the past in general. Joe didn’t care about getting to know them, just what they could offer him. The ‘Rubies’ he had taken were making him feel better than he had in weeks. Its effects were double that of any drugs he had taken back in his youth.
A slower song started and Joe pulled Loran in to dance closer. He looked down and held her deep brown eye. “So what’s the story with you, Jason and Paul?”
“The three of us are very close, have been for over a hundred years.” Loran was drawn in the depth of green in his eyes, saw the desire there. The drug affecting him like so many others, including her. She had heard stories about him for several years and this was the first time she had actually been this close. Loran boldly caressed his face, running her fingertips over his lips.
“Want to get out of here and go to my place?” Loran asked, trailing her fingers over the sensitive area on his throat.
“Lead the way.” Joe replied softly in her ear.
Taking his hand Loran lead him back to the table. “We’re leaving, see you at the house later.” She winked at Paul and Jason as she grabbed one of the full bottles. Jason and Paul waved bye, smiling at each other.

It went on like that for three days. The group would show up at the White Horse Pub, order several bottles of blood wine (the good stuff) and drink half the night away. Dancing, drinking, and taking ‘Rubies’, having a good time.
Scott slid on the bar stool next to Tiny on one of those nights after watching Joe sharing a blood kiss with Paul in the middle of the dance floor. It wasn’t an uncommon site amongst the Community, but for Joe and the people that knew him, it was.
“What is he doing?” Scott asked.
“Trying to forget what he has to do.”
“Well he picked the wrong group to do that with. They’re nothing but trouble.”
“Should we try and pull Joe away from them and send him home?”
“We could try.” Tiny responded and hopped off of the stool. With Scott following him, they went over to where Joe and Paul were on the floor. Tiny tapped Joe on the shoulder.
“Tiny!” Joe exclaimed when he turned around.
“Having a good time Joe?” Tiny asked while eyeing Paul.
“Oh yeah the best, feel really good too.” Joe laughed
“I think its time you went home…to your family.” Scott spoke up.
“Don’t want to. I’m having to much fun.”
Come on Joe…” Tiny gently took his upper arm and pulled him a few feet away from Paul. “…I’ll take you home.”
”No!” Joe yelled jerking his arm away. “Now leave me alone.” he backed away and turned to Paul. He stared at him a moment, then suddenly kissing him full on the mouth. Joe pulled away, staring him in the eyes.
“Lets go.” Joe brushed past him and headed for their table.
Paul glanced up at Tiny and Scott, a smile played across his lips, saluting them he spun on his heels and went after Joe.
Tiny took a step forward and Scott grabbed his arm. “No, we need to call Nick. I’ve heard the three of them are scared of him. Joe’s not going to listen to us, but he will listen to Nick.”
”Oh yeah since when?” Tiny shot back.
“Since Sav got sick.”
Tiny watched as Joe and the others left the Pub. “Ok call him, I’ll follow them to their house.”
Scott dashed over to the bar and snatched up the phone. Punching in the number at Joe’s. Evelyn answered and yelled for Nick.
“Joe’s in trouble, I’m at the Pub.” Was all Scott needed to say.
”On my way.” Nick replied and broke the connection.
Scott headed out of the Pub to find Tiny standing on the walk in front.
“What’s wrong, I thought you were going to follow them?”
“I was, but when I got out here, they were gone. They must have flown.”
”Nick is on his way and he’s not going to be happy when he gets here.”
”Tell me about it.” Tiny grumbled as he glanced around the area.
