When Night Falls(Pt21)
Joe studied the room harder, bringing everything into focus that he could. Jagged holes in the floor where the wood had rotted out, some were made. Many of them had some kind of soft glow dancing at the edges. The walls for the most part were intact from what he was able to see. Water from above, slowly dripped down one, turning the wood white in places. A soft metal click drew his attention upward, along the makeshift catwalk that spanned the middle of the entire room. Six men were strategically placed down its length. Three faced Lily, three faced Crystal, all of them had rifles trained on them.
“You said you wouldn’t harm them.” Joe called out. His body stiffened as he felt the present’s mere inches behind him, closer still until they were touching. Joe silently scolded himself for allowing his trust to get the better of him.
“I’m not going to harm them, you are.” He whispered close to Joe’s ear. “If you try and turn around, my men will shoot them, but only wound. If you try to harm me, they will shoot. If you try to stop me, they will shoot. Do as you are told and all of you will leave here alive.”
“What do I have to do?”
“Stand here and be still for a moment.”
“I’m not mov…” Joe’s voiced trailed off as he felt his hand travel slowly up his chest.
“Take your shirt off.”
“I though you weren’t into that.”
Seconds later the shot rang out, splintering the wood by Crystal’s chair. Her startled scream echoed around the room.
Joe quickly removed his shirt, letting it drop to the floor beside him.
“mmm, much better.” He ran his fingertips slowly across Joe’s broad shoulders, then down his back. “Your skin is as smooth as silk.”
“Glad you approve.” Joe replied, fighting the urge to move away from his touch. “You still haven’t told me your name.”
“Names aren’t important.” He replied and tugged on the button of his jeans, slipping his hand down inside.
Joe sucked in his breath. “It’s important to me when someone is going to fuck me.”
“Call me whatever you like.” He slowly stroked Joe’s groin, receiving no response after a few minutes. “I don’t turn you on Joseph?”
“You disgust me to the point where I might throw up.”
He chuckled softly, then ran his tongue over Joe’s throat. “I like the smell of your blood.”
Joe darted his eyes toward the man that came out of the shadows.
“He’s going to place a blind fold on you and you’re not going to protest or…”
“They will shoot.”
“You learn fast Joseph.”
Joe took a deep breath, gathering the strength and courage for what he was about to do. Hoping against all hope that it would work.

Sav glanced at the horizon, then to Dylan. “We should get back to the house, the sun will be rising soon.”
“Just a few more minutes. I want to watch the sunrise over this beautiful place, to see if it as you described to me.” Dylan smiled softly and reached into his pocket. “I even brought something for the occasion.” He dangled the flask in front of Sav. “It’s your favorite too.”
Sav returned his smile. “Up here is the best place to watch.”
Dylan followed him up the small rise, several hundred yards from the house that sat to the side of them. He sat down in the grass and Dylan flopped down beside him. He uncapped the flask and passed it to Sav.
“You first.”
Taking it from him, Sav took a long swallow. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had any of this.” He said once he lowered the flask.
“I figured as much, that’s why I brought it.”
Sav passed it to him.
“No, that’s all for you. I have more from where that came from.”
“Thanks.” Sav replied and took another drink.
“Ireland is so beautiful. I can see why you would want to come back.”
“We love it here.”
Dylan turned questioning eyes to him. “We?”
“Joe and I.”
”oooh right…the boyfriend. I forgot about him.”
“We’re more to each other than that Dylan.”
Dylan reached for his hand that held the silver ring. “I take this as a indication that you married him.”
Sav laughed softly. “No. He asked me though, but I turned him down.”
“OK then this is some kind of commitment.”
“I had the rings made for us before I met you. It symbolizes our undying love for each other.”
“You always were a romantic.”
Sav looked up to catch his eyes. Dylan slowly leaned closer to him, intent on kissing him. Sav quickly turned away.
“What about you? Anyone special in your life?”
“Oh yes, I have someone. He’s great, loving, very caring of my needs, but he’s not you. I never stopped loving you Rick.”
“Um…I…I don’t now what to say to that.”
“You don’t have too. I know there will never be another in your life, like Joe is or dare I say…Nick.”
“There is no room for another. One day you will find the same.” Sav finished off the blood wine and handed Dylan the flask back.
“Perhaps one day.” He replied, turning more toward him. “Maybe, for old time’s sake, we can share what we had back then. This time I’ll know what its like to taste your blood.”
“Its not the same as it was then. Not after my illness.”
”I don’t care.” Dylan closed the distance between them and lightly brushed his lips over his. “Just once more Rick, before we say goodbye again.”
All the memories from their time together rushed forward. Sav tangled his fingers in Dylan short black hair, pulling him back to his mouth, thrusting his tongue between Dylan’s parted lips.
Gently pushed him to lye back on the ground, Dylan lay half way on top of him. His hand running down his side and under his shirt. “I never forgot how smooth your skin is or the taste.” He mumbled as he made his way down Sav’s neck, swirling his tongue over the sensitive area at the base.
Pushing him away, Sav opened his eyes, looking up at him.
“What’s wrong?”
“Not out here.”
“Why not?”
“The sun will be up soon.”
“Alright. The bed in your room does sound better.” Dylan smiled and jumped to his feet. He took Sav’s hand and pulled him up.
Sav swayed and fell against him.
“Are you alright Rick?”
“Fine. You pull..me..pulled me…to f..fast.”
“You don’t look well. Maybe we did too much walking.”
”No..I..I’ve been feeling…” Sav’s voice trailed off and his knees buckled.
“Rick!” Dylan dropped down beside him.
“S..something wrong.” Sav said, placing his hand over his face. “ug..my head…take me..house.”
“I can’t do that.”
Sav dropped his hand and looked up at him. “Get…help.”
“I can’t do that either.”
Sav rolled his eyes away, trying to see off in the darkness, everything was blurred. Every part of his body felt heavy and his head began to pound harder. “You, you put some…thing…” he tried to sit up, but Dylan quickly pushed him back to the ground, partially laying on him.
‘This isn’t right. Dylan put something in that drink. Can’t let it put me to sleep. I have to get up…now. Call for help…’ Sav let his mind focus on Phil and Rick, hoping that he could get through to them before whatever Dylan gave him took over. He drew in a deep unsteady breath, intending to call out to the guards that were close by, but Dylan quickly covered his mouth. Sav looked up at him again.
“Shh…don’t fight it Rick, let it take you.”
‘Why is he doing this…I trusted him.’ He fought to keep his eyes open, but it was no use, the drug that Dylan gave him working to quickly.
Dylan scanned the grounds, making sure that none of the guards were around. He stood up and looked down at his prize, smiling to himself at how easy this was. He picked Sav up and made it look like one person was flying away from the Elliott house.

Joe dug his fingers into the man’s wrist, pulling his hand from inside his jeans. “You know what?” He started, angrily tossing it aside. “I’ve had about enough of this…” he took a step forward, keeping his eyes trained anywhere but on Lily and Crystal as two shots rang out, their screams tore at his insides. “You want to kill them, fine, then go ahead! You never intended for them to leave here alive anyway.” Joe finally spun around and came face to face with his foe.
“How ironic…” Joe didn’t stop the laughter that bubbled in his throat. “..are you such a coward, that you can’t even show me your face?”
A red leather mask covered half his face, but it didn’t hide the smirk on his lips. “In time you will learn my identity. I’ve enjoyed playing this game with you Joseph. I wondered just how long it would take you to crack under the pressure.” A slight wave of his hand and the men along the catwalk dropped their rifles.
“If I would have cracked under the pressure, you would be dead now.”
”You seem to forget who is in control here.”
“I AM!!” Joe yelled. “This game ends here and now. You can do whatever you like…I don’t care anymore.”
The man slightly titled his head, “This was never a game.
In a blur Joe had him pinned to the wall, fingers poised to rip out his heart, he didn’t even feel the bullet as it ripped through his thigh. “It’s over.”
Adjusting his body against the firm grip he held the red, angry eyes before him. “Such courageous valor young Joseph. It will do you no good to kill me now. Every one you hold dear will be dead by morning if you do. Leaving you with pain and guilt for being the one responsible for causing their death. Can you live with that horrendous guilt?”
Joe glared at him a moment longer, taking in what he said. With a deep growl, he released his hold and stepped away. “It still ends here, no more threats, killing...just stop this..this...whatever it is you’re after.” Joe spun on his heels, heading toward Lily. Ignoring the pain in his leg so not to show weakness at such a critical moment.
”If you’re leaving, then by all means take Crystal and Lily with you. I have no more use for them. I’ve gotten what I’ve wanted from the beginning. Everything else was just a bonus. Oh and be mindful of the holes when you walk over, you never know what is in them.”
“Candles and tinfoil.” Joe shot back. His confident strides faltered a bit when he tripped over something on the floor. The bright flare of light momentarily blinding him. His eyes focused again to see flames licking close to Lily, several more bright flares. It was like a domino effect all across the floor.
“Can you push the fear of fire aside long enough to save them Joseph?”
Ignoring him, Joe shielded his eyes and closed the distance between him and Lily. He pushed the blindfold off her eyes, giving her a slight smile of reassurance. Joe worked frantically on the knots as Lily pulled her chaffed and bleeding wrist from the tight loops.
When she was free, Joe yanked her to his chest. Both of them heard Crystal’s terrified screams as the fire burned dangerously close to her.
“We have to get her Joe.” Lily screamed in his ear.
Joe’s fear of fire roared to the surface. It was all around them, the rotting wood feeding the hungry flames. “I…I can’t…”
“Don’t you dare give up on her!” Lily continued to scream and started hitting him the chest.
Another voice slammed into his mind. ‘Don’t let him win. You promised Thomas’, push your fear aside and go to her.’
Joe closed his eyes, blocking everything out but Rebecca face, he drew strength from her, knowing that she was by his side. Wrapping his arm tightly around Lily, he flew through the raging fire. He pushed the pain away when he was burned on his injured leg as the flames reached for them. Working together they untied her bindings. At one point, Joe pulled to hard and broke her wrist, enabling them the free her. Blocking her yells of pain, Joe pulled both girls to his chest.
“Hold on!” He yelled and flew to another place in the room that wasn’t consumed in flames. The inside corner where the water was dripping down, that he had noticed when he first arrived. The wood was wet enough not to burn, but for how long. Joe glanced toward the ceiling. Their escape was cut off from there too as flames shot across the expansion.
“How are we going to get out?” Crystal cried.
Releasing them, Joe turned around and slammed his fist through the wall. The rotted wood gave way easily under his strength. Turning slightly he hit it several times with his shoulder. Small pieces of wood embedded themselves in his flesh. The three of them scrambled through the hole. This room was also on fire, but not as bad as the one they just escaped from. Joe grabbed both of them and headed for the window. Half way there the floor gave out beneath them. Lily managed to grab onto the jagged edges and haul herself back up, but Joe and Crystal crashed to the floor some ten feet below.
Lily scooted to the edge and looked down at them. Crystal lay on her side, not moving. Joe lye on his back, staring up at her. The piece of wood sticking out of his side at an angle.
“Joe!” Lily screamed down.
Raising his head, Joe glanced down at his stomach, jarring the wood. A deep groan rumbled in his throat, he dropped his head back to the floor.
Lily swung her feet over the edge, glancing at the fire around the room before she swung around and lowered herself to dangle by her arms. Taking a deep breath, she let go and dropped to the floor. She quickly checked on Crystal first and was relieved to find a heartbeat. Turning to Joe she went to pull out the piece of wood and he stopped her.
“Leave it, it’s too hard for you to pull out.”
“Can you get up? The fire is…”
Joe face contorted in pain as he pushed himself up. “Yes.”
“The doorway is blocked. We can’t get out that way. There is another window over there we can get out of.”
Joe was leaning over Crystal, trying to wake her. “She out. I’ll have to carry her.” Slowly getting to his feet, Joe pushed away the pain and picked Crystal up.
Lily made her way to the window, grabbing anything she could to break out the panes.
“I’ll take her first, then come back for you.” Joe told Lily as he swung his legs out the window. Sitting on the ledge he turned back to Lily. “Don’t go anywhere.” Giving her a small reassuring smile he slid from the ledge and flew to the ground. Once there, he laid Crystal gently on the ground far enough away from the burning building. He looked up just as the roof caved in, in the room where all of this started.
Lily was leaning out of the window as the black smoke billowed out above her. Joe quickly flew back up to her, wrapping his arms around her waist while Lily put hers around his neck.
The hard landing sent him forward, stumbling until they both fell. Unable to catch himself Joe landed heavily on Lily, the jagged piece of wood slid backwards. He didn't bother to stop the yell of pain as he rolled of Lily to flop to the ground.
Momentarily dazed, breathless, Lily pushed her self up. The loud crackling, popping of the fire drew her attention to the burning building, then to Joe's pain filled voice.
"We have...have to go."
Gathering her wits, Lily scrambled to her feet. "Come on, get up."
"Can't...I can't." Joe hissed.
"Yes you can," Lily yelled as she grabbed his arm to try pulling him up. "Come on Joe, I can't do this alone. Come on!"
Fighting the darkness that wanted to take him, Joe pushed himself to his knees, crawling to Crystal, he hap-hazardily carried her half way to the car before falling to his knees again.
Lily quickly grabbed Crystal under her arms and dragged her the rest of the way. Racing back to Joe she dug threw his pocket for the keys. Unlocking the door she spent another ten minutes struggling to get Crystal in the front seat. By that time Joe had manged to dragged himself across the ground and now lay in the back seat, breath coming in short haggard breaths.
"Plane is...airport...waiting."
Lily jumped in the driver’s seat and started the car. She quickly punched in direction to the airport on the GPS and hoped she had the right one. Wiping the sudden tears from her cheeks, she put the car in gear, leaving the burning building behind them she raced to the airport.

Standing on the small hill above the burning building, he flipped open his cell and punched in the numbers. It rang several times before it was answered.
“Where are you?”
“I’m heading to the appointed rendezvous.”
“Do you have him?”
“He’s sleeping like a baby.”
“Joseph managed to escape the fire.”
“He wasn’t supposed to die anyway. That would change all the plans we have made. And your revenge against the three of them would have been spoiled.”
“Yes it would have. I’ll meet you there and don’t do anything to him until I get there, you can have your fun later. Stick with the plans.”
“So you can watch.”
“Absolutely.” He ended the call and stared after Joe’s car. “I’m in control Mr. Elliott and the game is not over.”
