Chapter Twenty-One ~ Bad Reaction
~*~*~*~
We arrived at Michael’s house, Nadine came along on Michael’s invitation. We walked into his house and Nadine began to gush about how great Michael’s house was. He of course thanked her graciously. I was in my own little world replaying Jason snapping and hitting me. I didn’t even notice that Michael was talking to me.
“Crystal…Crystal!” Michael said, slightly shaking my arm. I shook myself out of it and looked at Michael. “Huh?” “I asked, if you could lay down, I’ll see if we have a ice pack or something for you.” Michael said, as he ushered me over to the couch. I obeyed, laying down along the leather couch. Michael and Nadine exited the room. I closed my eyes briefly and all I could see was Jason’s angry eyes as his hand came down in slow motion. I opened my eyes and shook my head. “Fuck.” I mumbled as I stared up at the ceiling, my mind beginning to make patterns out of speckled plaster that gave the ceiling texture. I hadn’t realized that I had fallen into a light sleep when I heard footsteps. I opened my eyes to see Colleen’s shocked face looking down at me. “Uh…hi.” I mumbled. “My God! What happened to you!?! Michael didn’t--” “No, no, not in your life. My ex-fiancé did this.” I said, as I attempted to get up. Colleen pushed me down again. “Where do you think you’re going? I have specific orders to tend to you. Now, relax, okay?” Colleen said, as she put an ice pack on my inflamed eye. I sighed in relief. “Feel good?” “You have no idea.” “Actually I have a better idea than you think.” Colleen said, as she opened a bottle of pills took out a couple. “Open wide.” I obey as she dropped the pills in my mouth and held a glass to my lips. I swallowed the pills along with the half of glass of water she gave me. “What do you mean by that?” I asked, looking at her through my good eye. “I was in an abusive relationship in high school. He would beat me until I was unconscious. One time he choked me until I lost consciousness and quit breathing. He left me for dead.” Colleen said, as she wrapped some ice in a slightly damp washcloth and put it over my nearly swollen shut eye. “My God! Why did he do that?” “I said something he didn’t like or something like that.” Colleen said, shaking her head. “Somehow, my sister found me and gave me CPR and Mouth to mouth. Without her I wouldn’t be here.” “Did they find your boyfriend?” “Yeah, he’s doing 12 years for attempted murder.” “God, just imagine, that could’ve been me.” “Did he…hit you a lot?” “No, this is the first time. He came close once, but hit the wall next to my face and put his hand through it. I knew it would only be a matter of time.” I said grimly. “That’s how it started my Jared too until one day something pushed him over the edge and I became his human punching bag.” Colleen said, letting out a heavy breath as she adjusted the ice pack. “Did…” I croaked, my throat feeling dry. I swallowed. “Did Michael know?” “I haven’t told him, but my mother probably did. I can’t think of anyone else who could’ve paid for my stay in the hospital.” Colleen said, a small smile coming to her face. My mouth and throat felt really dry, but the pain in my face and tailbone was gone. “My…my throat.” I complained, my eyes suddenly feeling heavy. What the hell did she give me?“What’s…what’s happening…” I said, as my vision became fuzzy. My body began to feel more and more numb to everything. It was as if I was floating, nothing affected me. I began to panic. What the fuck is going on?!?
I closed my eyes and opened them to see what looked like Michael. He mumbled something to Colleen, Nadine was at Michael’s side. “What’s wrong with her? What did you give her?” I could hear Nadine, but my mind was too clouded to understand her. “A couple of Demerol, it’ll numb the pain and let her sleep.” Michael’s voice echoed, before I reached a black oblivion. When I woke up, I was in Michael’s bed. My body still felt like it was made out of lead as I tried to take the cold compress off the right side of my face. My eye averted to the window to find that there was no light. I could hear my heart pounding in my ears. It was fast and irregular.
Something was wrong. I gathered the strength to try and sit up. My movements were sluggish, as if I was moving in slow motion. It tripped me out, seeing trails where my arms had just been. I moved my hand in front of my face, another trail. This isn’t normal. Something’s wrong. I looked around the darkened room, my eyes automatically adjusted to the darkness. My eyes landed on the end table where a plate that had a sandwich and chips on it. I saw the tall glass of water and my hand went directly for it as thirst burned the back of my throat. Instead of grabbing it, my hand missed, knocking the plate and sandwich off the table. It moved in slow motion, but I made no attempt to rescue my would-be meal. The plate broke in half as the chips scattered all over the floor and sandwich fell apart. I let out a heavy sigh as the door swung open. There in the doorway stood Michael. My brow furrowed. “Miiiichaaeelll, whaaatttthe hellllluuu giiivveeemmeeee” I slurred, drool dripping down my chin. “Oh dear, Crys, the drug should be out of system by now. You’ve been asleep all day.” Michael said, his eyes meeting mine. “Whhhhaattttcccchhhuuuuu mmmmeaaaannnnnn outttaaaaammmmyyyyyy ssssyyyysssteemmm, I stiiillllllfffeeeeeellll wiiieeerrrrdddddd.” “Oh God. Crystal, don’t pass out okay? I’m going to call a doctor.” Michael said turning around and rushing out of the room. Colleen came rushing in. She turned on the light. I shut my eyes from the sudden brightness. “Oh God! Michael! She’s pale…deathly pale…” “Whhhhhaaatttttssss goooiiinnnggg ooonnnn…” “Crystal it’ll be okay, okay? Just stay with me…” My eyes felt so heavy. My breath was shallow, I couldn't even breath, like someone had a vise grip on my throat and it was getting shut by with every second that went by. “I jusssttt wannnnaaa clooosseee myyyy eyesssss…jusssttt fffooorrrr a seccconnddd….kaaayyy?” “No! No! You can’t! Michael!!!!” Colleen screamed, Michael came rushing into the room his look was one of despair. He tossed the phone to Colleen. “Call 911. NOW!” Michael screamed as he gathered me up in his arms. “Doooonnnn’ttttt…” “Crystal, Crystal stay with me okay? It’ll be alright…” “I’mmmmm sssssooooo tirrrreeedddd…” “You can’t sleep now…okay? Stay up with me. I’ll sing you a song…any song?” “Kkkkkaaayyyyy…” I slurred. “What do you want to hear?” “Hoooooowwwwwbbbouuuutttttt Smmmmiiiillllleeeee…” “Something a bit more upbeat, I don’t want you falling asleep.” Michael said, still cradling me in his arms. “Kaaaaaaayyyyyyy…hoooowwwwwbbbouuutttt Heeeearrrrtttt…” Suddenly my body started to convulse uncontrollably. I couldn’t talk, I couldn’t think, I couldn’t control anything anymore. I convulsed for what seemed like hours before I could hear the blaring of sirens. People swarmed around me as Michael placed me on the floor. Suddenly everything went black.
The next time I woke up, I stared up at a white ceiling. There was a tube in my nose, and IVs in my arms.
“She’s awake.” I heard Nadine’s voice say. I turned my head to see Nadine, Michael and Colleen sitting by my bedside. “Hey guys.” I said, looking at them. My voice was so hoarse. “Why am I in the hospital?” The three of them looked at Michael and he let out a heavy breath. “I had Colleen give you a couple of Demerol to ease the pain from your swollen face. Unfortunately you had a deadly allergic reaction to it and it landed you here.” “Oh.” I said, simply. I didn’t want to press the issue, although I couldn’t understand my Michael had Demerol in his possession, but I figured it would be better to discuss it at a later time. “So, when do I get out of here?” I asked, looking at Michael. “Today actually, we were just waiting for you to wake up and the doctor’s got to make one last exam and away we go.” Michael said, looking at me. I nodded. “Crystal, you’re really quiet. Are you sure you don’t have any other questions?” “Yeah, did I die?” I asked looking at Michael. It was supposed to be out of humor, but Michael looked down. The room was filled with a strange heaviness. “Your heart did stop, yes.” Michael said, his eyes meeting mine. My heart sank like I had a ton of bricks came down upon it. Wow, I wasn’t expecting that. “Shouldn’t I have like broken ribs are something?” I said still trying to make light of the situation. “Actually, they gave you a shot of adrenaline and your heart started beating. It was really cool.” Michael and Colleen glared at Nadine. “I mean, not cool that you died but the fact that a simple shot brought you back.” Nadine said, rephrasing her statement. “I see, I haven’t missed my flight have I?” “Honey, it’s only Monday afternoon.” “Really?” I asked, looking at Michael. Michael nodded. “Awesome.” I said, moving my head to look at the ceiling again. “Hey guys, I want to talk to Crys a minute, you don’t mind do you?” Michael asked Nadine and Colleen. “No,” “Not at all.” “All right, great.” Michael said, as I heard Nadine and Colleen get up the chair and walk out of the hospital room. Michael got up and leaned over me, his beautiful face obstructing my view of the ceiling. “Hello sexy.” I said, my eyes adjusting to look into his. “Hello.” Michael said, his hand folding around my own. He broke away from my gaze for a moment to look at my hand, as if my hand had the words he wanted to say on it. “What’s on your mind?” I asked, as he brought his gaze back to mine again. The heart monitor began to beep faster. He glanced at it then looked at me and smiled, the beeping came faster. “Am I doing that to you?” Michael asked, his head nodding toward the monitor. I smiled. “Yes. You tend to have that affect on me.” I said, my eyes meeting his again. He blushed. He was so sexy when he blushed. He licked his lips. “Look, I’m sorry that I did this to you.” Michael said, giving my hand a little squeeze. I licked my parched lips. “Did what to me?” I asked naively. “Giving you that damn Demerol. I should’ve just let Colleen talk to you or something.” “Whoa, wait. You and I didn’t know that I was going to have a bad reaction to it. You were just trying to help me.” “Help you by killing you? You should be upset with me, not this understanding…” Tears began welling up in his eyes. “Michael stop being so hard on yourself. You didn’t know, and I didn’t know, okay?” “But…” I brought my hand to his lips to stop him. Michael held my hand in place as he kissed my fingertips, allowing his tears to spill over his cheeks. Seeing him cry brought on tears of my own. “…I thought I was going to lose you.” “Are you kidding me? I’m like a cat, that was only one of my nine lives.” I said, teasingly, trying to lighten the mood. It worked, Michael began to laugh a little bit. He held a hand to his mouth to stifled to laugh. “Crystal…” Michael said, his eyes meeting mine. He released my hand, but I grabbed his, this stopped him. “I love you. I love you. I love--” I was interrupted by his lips touching mine in a passionate kiss. My hands entangled in his hair as our kiss turned heated. The monitor’s beeping skyrocketed then it started sounding off an alarm, but I didn’t care. We continued our passionate lip-lock until we were interrupted by a man clearing his throat. Michael pulled away, his cheeks turning a rosy hue as he went to sit down. “Well, that would explain your sudden spike in your heart rate. I hope I wasn’t interrupting anything?” I hastily shook my head. “Good, well Crystal, I am Dr. Horowitz, I was the attending physician when you were brought in here early this morning, do you understand what you are in here for?” “Yeah, I had a bad reaction to a painkiller right?” “That is correct. You don’t have a prescription for it do you?” The doctor said, looking at me. I shook my head. Michael quickly interjected. “They were mine, they were left over from breaking my ankle last winter.” Michael interjected quickly, looking at me then back at the doctor. “I see, and what was the reason you gave her the Demerol Mr. Jackson?” “Well as you can see, her right half of her face is swollen. She had gotten into a spat with her ex-fiance and he hit her with his fist. She also landed on the ground with tremendous force. So I gave her the Demerol to ease the pain.” “Mr. Jackson, Ibuprofen or Tylenol would’ve worked better, and she would’ve not had a close call tonight either. Did you not have any in your home at all?” “I guess I didn’t realize that. My mind was spinning from all the excitement, I picked up the first thing I could think of.” Michael said, scratching his head while looking at the doctor. The doctor shook his head as he looked over my chart, then turned to me. “How are you feeling?” “Like a million bucks…” I said cheerfully. He gave a disbelieving look. “Okay, maybe like a hundred bucks.” I said rolling my eyes. The doctor took out his pen light and shined it in both my eyes. “Both pupils are reacting, that’s wonderful.” The doctor said, putting it back in his pocket. “Can you feel this?” The Doctor asked as he squeezed my thumb along the cuticle line. A sharp pain ran up my arm to my brain. “Ow!” I said, yanking my hand away. The doctor nodded in approval. “Okay, tell me your full name please?” “Crystal Marie Goetz.” I said, rolling my eyes at his silly question. “Just making sure…” He then turned my head to look at my right side. “…Wow, you still have quite the shiner. I’ll prescribe some Advil for you, stay away from anything with Morphine in it. It seems that your body reacts badly to the laboratory made stuff.” “What about the stuff my body produces normally?” “That’s normal. It’s the synthesized stuff you are seriously allergic to.” The doctor, said before putting a bracelet on my wrist. “Keep this bracelet on at all times, this is to tell medical personnel that you are allergic to morphine.” The doctor and his eyes meeting mine. I nodded. “Thanks.” I said, glancing at Michael. He was biting his lip nervously, he caught my glance and gave a small smile. “Well, I think that’s it. I’ll get a nurse in here to remove all these tubes and I’ll get your release forms ready.” The doctor said, as he exited the room. I clapped my hands together excitedly. “Yay.” I said, my eyes meeting Michael’s. He gave a nervous smile. I knew exactly why he felt so nervous. “Michael, you didn’t know. I didn’t know I was so allergic to morphine. Will you stop beating yourself up over it?” “You know the doctor probably thinks I have a problem. Maybe I do.” “What do you mean?” “Crystal,” Michael started, coming to my bedside again and grasping my hand. “What I gave you, was enough to sedate a horse, but I wasn’t thinking, my judgment was so clouded…” “It was only two pills Michael.” “They’re the maximum dose they make. They’re usually prescribed to those dying from terminal cancer.” My heart sank. “I usually take two…God…I’ll never do that again. Once we get back to my place, I’ll throw them away. I need your help Crystal. Please.” Michael pleaded with me. “Have you been doing it every day?” “The day I met you, I took three. But somehow you’re affect on me has been the best thing.” “You haven’t had withdrawals or anything?” I asked, out of curiosity. Michael shook his head. “Not at all.” “Who in the hell prescribed you…never mind. Money talks.” I said, my eyes meeting Michael’s. “How long have you been struggling with this?” “2003.” Michael said, his eyes meeting mine. “Wow. So during the Martin Bashir interview…” “I wasn’t myself.” “But your kids…” “They hardly noticed that daddy is addicted to prescription drugs, except little Paris of course. She caught me taking them. I remember her words to this day. ‘Daddy, why are you taking pills? Are you in pain?’ I thought that was enough to make me stop, but after three months I couldn’t take it anymore and fell off the wagon again. I was more careful about it. Making sure that no-one knew, my somehow my nanny…” “Grace, she found out?” I asked, suddenly intrigued with his story. “Yes, she tried to get Janet and Jermaine involved in an intervention. I don’t remember now how I found out, but I fired her for it.” “Michael…” He held his hand up to stop me. “Let me finish. I thought it could be the one thing I could control. I needed to feel that I was in control of something, but soon it was out of my control. I needed more Demerol for the same affect. When I started on them, I was taking one of the lowest dosage a day, now I’m popping two of the highest dosage that they make. I wanted out, but I could never bring myself to do it. Not until now that is.” Michael said, his eyes meeting mine again. “Michael…” “Shh…don’t speak,” Michael said as his lips touched mine in a chaste kiss. “You are better than any drug that man-kind can make. I love you so much.” Michael said, tears began to well up in my eyes. He brought his finger to wipe away a tear that fell down upon my cheek. “Don’t cry…why are you crying?” “Because, I never thought I could affect change in anyone…” “Crystal, I nearly killed you with my habit. I’m not about the make the same mistake again!” Michael said, the door opened and Nadine and Colleen walked in. “Hey guys.” Michael said, his gaze not leaving mine for a second. After a few moments past Michael pulled away from my bedside then he pressed the button that made the bed sit up. “Comfortable?” Michael asked, his eyes meeting mine. “Yes, thank you.” I replied. “So what’s the verdict?” Nadine asked, her eyes meeting mine. “I getting out today. Once the nurse…” As if on cue, the nurse entered the hospital room. “…Ah, there she is.” “Hello Crystal, are you comfortable?” “Yes I am.” I said, looking at the woman. She began taking the feeding tube and catheter out, followed by the oxygen, and IV. I finally felt like a free woman. “Okay, here is an epi pen, just in case you get stung by a bee…” “How’d you know I was allergic?” “The doctor did a allergen typing on your blood. According to your chart,” She glanced at the chart. “You have mild allergies to Grass Pollen, and Dust, and severe reactions to synthetic morphine and bee venom.” The nurse said, closing my chart again. She told me how to use the epi pen and gave me a piece of paper telling me about severe allergic reactions. She then gave me a couple of forms to fill out and sign. I did so gladly. Hospitals always weird me out. “Well now that’s done, you can get dressed and you are free to leave.” The nurse said as she made a couple of notes in the chart and left the room. I finally got out of the hospital bed being careful not to put all my weight on my legs. Michael helped to steady me while Nadine untied the thin hospital gown. It fell to the floor as Colleen laid my clothes on the bed. My eyes examined myself and I was shocked to find an ugly bruise surround a red mark between my breasts. I put my hand up to it. “They had to give you a shot of adrenaline to the chest. It’ll go away.” Michael said, looking at me. I grabbed a pair of underwear and tried to put them on, but I nearly fell over. “Perhaps, we should dress you Crys.” Michael said lovingly. I shook my head as I attempted to put them on again. This time I was successful. “I’m not completely helpless guys, I got this.” I said, as I got my pants on, feeling the strength come back to my body, by the time I was dressed, I felt like my old self again. Michael wrapped an arm around my waist as all four of us walked out of the hospital. I felt a familiar gurgling in my stomach. I clutched it. “Ooh, when was the last time I had some real food?” I asked, looking at Michael. “Breakfast yesterday.” Michael said, stopping to think a moment. “You’re probably pretty hungry huh?” “Yeah, whatever was in that food tube doesn’t cut it,” I said, looking at Michael. Michael looked at Nadine and Colleen. “You guys up for eating somewhere?” “Sure.” Came the response. Michael looked at me. “What do you feel like having?” Michael asked, as we stood in front of the elevator. Michael pressed the button. “A big ol’ steak with a huge baked potato and salad…oh and don‘t forget the pitcher of Pepsi.” I said, elaborating my words with my hands. Michael, Colleen and Nadine busted out laughing at my comment. “Okay then, if you want it then you got it.” Michael said, as the elevator opened and we stepped inside. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
