-September 23 2014-
Our schedule had been jammed packed the past week. We had been gearing up, between appearances on variety shows and radio shows, to perform a new versions of Lucifer, Replay, Sherlock, and Ring Ding Dong that included English lyrics and revamped backing tracks and vocals to include vocal parts for me. We had also gotten the go ahead to sing our new songs of Heat and Hardly Breathing as well when if we ever got prompted to. That was exciting for me, as I was wanting to show off the new material we had been working on.
We often started the day at 4am and didn't get finished until midnight. Often we would be so busy, there wasn't enough time to have a proper meal. I had gotten used to having one good meal in the morning before I met up with one of the guys and we would eat if the variety show fed us, but that only happened like twice. I felt bloated from all the Kimchi and ramen noodles I had consumed because they were quick and readily available. All the free time we thought we had was spent on getting from one place to another as I didn't take into consideration how big Seoul actually was. There was always time for the band members to steal a kiss or two but that was about it.
The pre-album promotions in South Korea had gone over very well. There was a lot of hype surrounding the album, and the netizens were ecstatic about the more mature tone of the new album.
Right now however, Key and I sat in a coffee shop inside Incheon International awaiting our flight to Tokyo to start boarding. I had managed to escape with Key, as I wanted to get sit with him over some coffee and see how his grandmother was doing.
During the week, Key's grandmother's condition had been rapidly declining as she had contracted an antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection and was transferred to isolation in the top hospital in Gangnam. Key took every chance of free time to call or see his Ahjumma for a status update. For some reason I had a nagging feeling she wasn't going to make it, but I never once voiced my thoughts. I simply tried to comfort Key whenever I could having lost my mother to cancer two year previously, I knew exactly what he was going through.
Today, he was antsy and fidgety. He was playing with a keychain his grandmother had gifted him with while he was still a child. He hadn't even touched his green tea latte I bought for him. He didn't seem with it today, and I didn't blame him either. Today was also his birthday, and I figured now would be a good of time as any to give him his birthday present. I glanced down at my purse and pulled it up into my lap.
"So, I wanted to give you this, to commemorate your birthday..." That got the younger man's attention. "...but I don't know if now is the time to--" I said, as I began pulling out Key's birthday present I had gotten him. I had called around a ton of favors and manage to procure a picture of Key's grandmother as a young woman. He had never seen his grandmother as a young woman and always wondered what she was like. I had managed to get the picture blown up a bit and framed in a metal picture frame that said his grandmother's name on it.
Just then Key's cell phone began to go off and Key's eyes averted to it before picking it up to see who was calling him.
"Omo, I need to take this Crystal. I'll be right back." Key said as he connected the call and walked outside the tiny coffee shop. I stared outside at the tarmac, watching the planes land and take off in synchronized fashion and sipped my coffee. Ten minutes went by and I started to wonder what happened to Key.
I sat there for a bit longer. I pulled out my phone and sent Key a text asking his whereabouts. When I got no response, I knew something was up, either that or he was play a prank on me. Still however, I waited for Key until it was about time to get back to the gate and wait for the call to board the plane.
Throwing away my empty coffee cup and get to the gate to see Key not there. The mood is very solemn.
"Where's Key?" The guys looked at each other before Jinki spoke up.
"His grandmother passed away just now. You were with him, you didn't know?" Jinki asked, looking up at me and I shook my head.
"No...he left to take the phone call and never came back. Are you serious right now? Wow. Is he okay?"
"No. I wish we could cancel the promotions, but we're already in the thick of it. SM has allowed him to go and help his family make final arrangements. He won't be coming with us for our promotions in Japan. As far as I know he'll be meeting up with us in the States on the 30th." Jin said, as he looked up at me.
"Okay...that's really sad, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised."
"Why do you say that noona?" Taemin asked, his eyes meeting mine.
"I had a feeling she wasn't going to make it. I just hope Key is going to be okay. I know he really loved her."
"He's strong. He will overcome it. We have faith in him." Jonghyun said, as we made brief eye contact. I nodded. There was silence up until our flight was called for boarding.
Tokyo was a blur of radio shows, variety show appearances and interviews, it was a little less tightly scheduled then our time in South Korea, and I was actually able to do a little bit of touristy stuff with the group as a whole. I was also able to eat better as well. While we were in Tokyo, our song for Heat debuted on the 25th, and the music video debuted world wide on the 27th. We were at the MTV Japan studios and had to announce it. It was a huge hit and immediately it climbed up on the charts and by the time we boarded a plane back to the States we were #1 on the Billboards in the US, UK, and Australia. We were #1 on the Hanteo chart, and had an all kill on all South Korean music charts.
The success was a bit overwhelming for all of us. When I checked the Billboard charts and saw Heat and jumped eleven positions to number one I screamed which caused Minho to worriedly asked me what was wrong. When I dropped the news, Minho was shocked at first then lifted me over his shoulder and howled out before jumping and running around the room with me over his shoulder which got the other guys' attention. Taemin, and Jinki ran up and down the halls of the hotel we were staying out, proudly declaring we were number one. Jonghyun collapsed in a heap of tears.
Jin ordered some champagne and appetizers through room service and called us into his room where we celebrated our success. The success was short lived for me though because I became worried about Key. I sent him a text telling him that we had conquered the Billboard charts in the US and the UK and wished him well. There had been no response from him at all since the night before his grandmother passed away.
Hardly Breathing was released on the 28th and it too, began climbing up the charts rapidly. YouTube nearly crashed due to how many people were streaming our video for Heat. By the time we boarded the plane back to LA Heat had over 100 million views.
Key met up with us at the airport and he looked like hell. I didn't blame him, none of us did. He had just lost a big part of his life. Minho, Jonghyun and Jinki took turns watching over him, even with how exhausted we all were, we still managed to take care of one another. We all slept on the plane. As soon as we got off the plane, we had to go to our hotel where our album release party would be. We would also be staying at said hotel which was the Hotel Bel-Air.
Upon arriving at the hotel, we checked into our respective rooms before we were met with make-up, wardrobe, and personal assistants. Melody and Jerome were fast at work the two weeks we were away prepping for our album release. The door to the Junior Suite was propped open as people were coming in and out of it bringing in wardrobe racks, moving around furniture in the room and setting up lights around the moved office desk which I assumed would be the make-shift make-up station. Melody came through the door to my room carrying an armful of outfits on hangers and wrapped in plastic bags before setting them on a rack that had just been finished by another team member. I was laying on my belly on the king size bed, watching all the stuff going on, I had been reading a romance novel up at that point. I saw Melody turn around and look at me.
"Crystal! You look like shit." Melody said, with a devious smirk on her face. I rolled my eyes at her as I put my bookmark in my book and closed it as I rolled my eyes and gave a little devious smirk of my own.
"Oh thank you, that's exactly what I wanted to hear after getting off a 10 hour flight, bitch." I said, as I let out a snort of amusement to let her know I was joking. She let out a laugh as I got off the bed and walked over to where she was.
"You're still feisty as hell...come here girl, give me a hug it's been a bit since I've seen you." Melody said as she opened her arms for an embrace and I wrapped my arms around her and gave her a hug. We pulled apart as Melody focused back on unwrapping the dresses. I decided to pick her brain a little and find out what the scoop was.
"So what's the deal with this whole album drop party? I was told we would be performing, where is this party? I don't see a place large enough for 500+ people." I commented as I grabbed a bottle of water off the counter of the room and twisted it open, the plastic seal breaking as I tipped the bottle and took a sip of water. Melody stopped what she was doing and walked over to the window and pulled the blinds up and I saw construction people constructing a glass floor over the massive outdoor door. My eyes widened in shock. "What? No way!"
"That will be your stage. We've also rented out the restaurant space adjacent to the pool and shut down the restaurant to have Gordon Ramsey and his team take over the kitchen. We originally had another chef set to cater the dinner, but Gordon insisted on taking over the catering. He's supposed to be here any minute to meet with you guys" Melody said, as she began unwrapping the outfits as another staff member brought in a few more. Gordon Ramsey would be cooking the food for tonight?
"Shut up! Really?"
"Yeah, he's on his way here now from the airport." She paused for a moment before turning her head to look at me. We made eye contact and she gave a smile. "I don't know if you realize this Crystal, but you guys are breaking all kinds of records. Both SM and Sony put lots of money into this party. They've invited lots of press...half of SM Town is also staying here and have come out to support your album release." My face clearly reflected my shock.
"Oh God. How much did they spend putting this together?"
"I don't know the exact figure but it's definitely north of five million." Melody said, as she grabbed a leather outfit off the rack and glancing over it before sizing me up.
"Holy...okay. What do I need to do?" I said, shaking my hands to dispel my nervousness. I took in a deep breath as Melody place a hand on my shoulder and gave me a reassuring look.
"Let me worry about that huh? I know all of our clients who have expressed interest into working you into endorsement deals, and the clients that will promote your album. Just be yourself." Melody said, before she handed me the leather body suit. "Here. I want you to wear this. You'll be meeting with Gordon and the rest of the guys here in a bit to hash out what food will be served before you'll be starting rehearsals."
"When are people supposed to start showing up?" I asked, as I glanced over the leather body suit.
"Here in a couple of hours, they're setting up the outside now with red carpet and a wall with your album graphic on it and setting up designated places for the press. This isn't my first rodeo Crystal. I got you covered."
"When is sound check and all that?" I asked, and Melody let out a breath and looked at me like I was testing her patience. "Don't get all huffy with me. I'm shaking in my boots right now!"
"They should be finished with the sound and stage equipment here within the hour. You're going to do amazing honey. This is the moment you've been preparing for. I forgot to mention that there's going to be a people here to live stream your performances internationally via Google Hangouts. Let's get you ready to make your debut huh?"
I nodded as I took black leather outfit that was similar to the outfit I wore for Heat except that it was a halter with a deep V and I changed into it. As soon as I had it on and walked out of the bathroom, I was sat down at a make-up table where my hair and make-up were done impeccably. I looked amazing but felt like a ball of nerves as I put on the heels I would be wearing for the good majority of the night. I was encouraged to meet the guys in their suite and hang out with them for a while until it was time for sound check. Melody escorted me there, passing through several corridors to get to their room. Their door as well was propped open and their suite was much larger than mine. The guys were wearing coordinating outfits, and looked amazing as usual.
"Noona!" I heard Taemin say.
"Whoa, sexy..." Key followed up as Jinki waved me in and pointed to an empty chair in the living area of the large suite. I smiled and acknowledged the rest of the guys as I took the seat and got comfortable as I grabbed my phone out of a side pocket. Minho was still getting his make-up done. Just then one of the guy's assistants walked in and announced that Gordon Ramsey would be there any moment. I nodded as another assistant places a wine glass on the end table next to me. I looked up at the assistant, a woman in her mid-thirties with blonde hair, with a questioning look.
'What's this?" I asked, looking up, upon noticing the large wine glass set beside me. I had been so engrossed in my phone that I didn't see these new assistants walk in.
"Chardonnay from Mr. Ramsey's vineyards in France, compliments of Mr. Ramsey of course. I'm Cindy and over there is Rebecca...we'll be helping him in the kitchen. Mr. Ramsey will be here soon he's checking into his room as we speak. We were tasked with making sure you guys were comfortable." I smiled as I noticed the woman's English accent.
"Love your accent." I said enthusiastically as I held the bottom of the wine glass so Cindy could pour the wine. The woman blushed before thanking me, as she poured the chardonnay into the glass. As soon as the glass was half full she stopped and went over to Taemin who was adjacent from me and began pouring him a glass of the white wine.
The wine upon first taste was fruity, you definitely could taste the grapes, then came the bitterness of the alcohol before a subtle oak flavor popped through. It was pretty good. I sucked down half of the glass before Gordon came in with Lee Soo Man.
"Hey everyone. I have esteemed Michelin Chef Gordon Ramsey here, and he would like to discuss menu options with you guys but first, why don't you introduce yourselves." I looked around to the room to see no one jumping up to start introductions so I got up made eye contact with the English man and threw on a bright smile.
"Hello, My name is Crystal and I'm the new leader of SHINee." Our hands met in a firm handshake.
"I'm Gordon. I assume you already know who I am love..."
"Yeah, it's an honor to finally meet you."
"Likewise." Then Minho appeared behind me and Gordon worked his way around the circle of us, shaking hands and introducing himself. When the introductions were finished, Gordon launched right into a speech.
"Now, I'm sure you're wondering why I am here. I'm here because my daughter is a huge fan of you guys. When she read you guys were having a comeback she made a bet with me that I lost miserably and for her punishment she wanted me to find a way to meet you guys and cook for you. So now I'm here, first however I need to take care of a bit of business, would you guys help me in proving to my daughter that I'm here with you all right now and Face Time with me?"
I smiled and nodded before Gordon opened up the face-time app on his phone and called his daughter from it. We all said hello to a very ecstatic 13 year old. Gordon talked to his daughter for a bit before hanging up.
"Thank you. You made my 13 year old light up. Now, onto the reason why I'm here. We need to come up with a signature dish from each of you...something that's your favorite or something you haven't had in a while. We'll come up with a menu for the guests to choose from. I already knew what I wanted but waited until the other guys spoke up first.
Taemin wanted steak with rice. Key couldn't make up his mind but then settled on ravioli in a tomato based sauce. Jinki wanted Korean fried chicken, while Minho would be happy with some Ramen. Jonghyun wanted sushi, and I wanted parmesan chicken with hollandaise sauce and baby red potatoes.
Upon agreeing with a menu, Gordon came up with a list of food that he'd need and gave it to his assistants before saying his goodbyes to us to make his preparations. Shortly after Gordon left we were called for rehearsal and given a set list. On the set list was our newest release Hardly Breathing, followed by Heat, and Slower. I would then perform Perfect and the guys would perform I'm Stronger before we got a break to mingle before we would go back to perform Can You Hear Me Now, After Dark, Pay Me, Best of Me and Strangest Love.
It was about an hour long rehearsal session to get the right volume levels and special effects queued. I was excited and happy and nervous all at the same time. After our rehearsal/sound check, we were escorted to another room where there were some hor d'oeuvres and champagne and water ready for us. I had a small glass of champagne before sticking to water. We were told that press were starting to trickle in around 6pm
We gave multiple interviews and talked with members of the press. At 7pm we began our show with Google Hangouts and made our appearance at the album party and introduced ourselves in English, Korean and Japanese. I was tasked to talk a bit about our album and about the process of writing we went through while Key and Taemin broke down what I said in Japanese and Korean. As I scanned the audience I saw guys from EXO, some of the ladies from SNSD, even Heechul and Ryeowook from Super Junior. I would get the chance to meet them all I knew that much. I focused on my impromptu speech before we launched into our first set of songs and when we performed Hardly Breathing the muted video played behind us on a large digital screen.
Our album was released for sale at midnight, so it had been on sale for over 19 hours by the time the party was well underway. I had no idea how many units had sold thus far or where we were ranked as far as chart positions. I hadn't even had a chance to check my social media accounts to even get an inkling. Story of my life I suppose, now that I was considered a celebrity.
After our first set, we went and sat in some chairs saved for us, and conducted our Google Hangouts interview before launching into our second set of songs. Upon finishing our performance, we were followed around by people with Google, as we went around and said our hellos everyone. I did get to meet Heechul and Ryeowook who took notice of my outfit as I hugged each of them. Minho had to correct his hyungs, which I had to leave shortly after Minho's scolding since I had to continue making my rounds.
Everyone seemed to be very impressed with our new material and the more mature nature of the album. We get a chance to sit down and eat. The food is amazing. I have glass upon glass of chardonnay and champagne. By the time 10pm rolls around, things started to wind down, I'm starting to get pretty tipsy as well as everyone else who has stayed this long. Music is still playing and I end up twirling around the dancefloor with Amber who I hit it off well right from the get go and Key. Suddenly Key perked up as if he remembered something before he looked around.
"Crystal, come with me..."
"No Key, I'm dancing with her. Where are you running off with her to?"
"Don't you have something for me, from my birthday?" I looked at him with wide eyes of confusion before I realized what he was talking about.
"Oh...Oh! Amber, I'll be right back, I need to give Key his birthday present." I said, as I grabbed Key's hand and lead him off the glass dancefloor and through the crowd. I found my room and went inside. Key followed me as he sat down on the bed and watched me while I dug out my carry-on and dug through it to find the framed picture of Key's grandmother. "It took me a lot of tracking down to find this, but I found what you were looking for, and for what it's worth, I hope it helps." I said, as I sat down next to Key on the bed while handing him the tissue paper wrapped picture frame.
When Key opened it, he was immediately overcome with tears.
"You...you found one? Oh my God, she was beautiful." Key said, as he wiped as tears away and traced his hand over the picture of his grandmother as a young woman. He then looked at me, and set the picture aside. "Crystal...this is literally the best birthday present anyone has given me. I...I can't even begin to thank you..."
"Don't worry about it Key. As long as it gives you strength and reminds you that you're not alone...then I've done my job." I said, as I went to get up but the younger man grasped my arm and pulled me into a hug. I wrapped my arms around him and held him for a bit before he loosened his hold on me and pulled away to meet my eyes.
"Noona, I will pay you back. This is seriously the nicest thing anyone has done for me." Key said as his finger curled under my chin and he started to lean forward. His lips touched mine and we shared a passionate kiss together. That only seemed to ignite a fire between us because before I knew it, Key had lifted me up and turned me over so I was on my back laying on the bed with him on top of me. Key pulled away from me as his eyes met mine. "I-I love you noona."
"I—what?" I said, realizing what Key had just said. "Key..."
"I—I think I love you. While I was gone I sort of realized my feelings for you when I was talking to my mother about you. She told me I should tell you how I feel..."
I didn't know what to say. I mean I really liked Key, but I wasn't sure if I shared the same sentiment. "Wow—Key, I..."
"You don't have to say it back or anything noona. I—I know you love Minho. I'll wait for you..."
"But Key—what about Jonghyun?"
"I love him too still...I just realized that I may be polyamorous and bi-sexual and—I'm fine with that."
I combed a hand through the younger man's hair and we were about to kiss again when there was a knock on the door and Key quickly jumped off of me like a scared cat being sure to grab his picture and I shot up too. I heard foot steps enter the room and Jonghyun appeared. He paused as he glanced back and forth between us.
"I'm interrupting something wasn't I..."
"Don't worry about it Jonghyun. We were just kissing. You've done much worse to me."
"Oh I suppose I have..."
"Done worse? Ugh, I don't even want to know." Key said, holding his hand up to stop Jonghyun from saying anything else. "What do you want Jonghyun?"
"I just need to know if I'm seeing this number correctly." Jonghyun said as he handed his I-pad to Key, whose eyes bugged out with a look of shock.
"W-What?!?!" Key freaked. That got my interest and I peeked over Key's shoulder to see, a real-time albums sales chart with our album cover displayed with the number of 5,780,621 after it. I did a double take and blinked a few times.
"WHAT!?!? FUCKING WHAT!?!?" I screamed, pulled the I-pad away from Key to get a better look at the number to make sure I was seeing things.
"We must have shattered a record or something...that's a lot of albums. Oh my God..."
"That says million right? I'm not seeing things?" Jonghyun asked, his eyes searching for answer from either one of us.
"No, no, you're not seeing things....that's really how much we sold? For real? It's gotta be a glitch or something. There's no way."
"Yeah, according to Edgar. The day's not even over yet, and this number is only counting the US, this doesn't include, Japan, South Korea or any other country...according to him, those numbers were astronomically high as well. Let's show this to Jinki, huh?"
Key, Jonghyun and I left the hotel room on our search to find Jinki and the rest of the guys. However by the time we found them, they were also notified of the good news. We toasted to our success as a group and partied into the early hours of the morning.
The song release for Slower was the next day (October 1st) for radio play. The video was released for viewing on October 5th, by which time we were back in New York and had already performed on The Late Show and The Tonight Show. We played games and did television interviews with the hosts to promote our newest album release.
We made an appearance on Saturday Night Live on the 6th when Can you hear me now? was due for radio release. The next few weeks were a blur of activities, starting from 3am in the morning and going into the late evening hours. Once again I had a diet full of coffee, energy shots and quick fast food take-out.
By the end of the promotion period, I wanted to kill Jin and Melody. Luckily, the 20th was right around the corner and we would begin preparations for our US tour. The schedule would carry through until the start of our tour started on the 15th of January.
A normal day consisted of waking up at 3am to start stretching for the Aerial Silk, and Pole dancing classes I would be taking since my solo dance routine included both. Then it was onto dance practice around 8am. Dance practice was long, it was four hours, since we had to incorporate the SHINee's old music into the mix.
I had a two hour lunch break which was spent eating something small and sleeping before I was up around 2pm and headed downstairs for vocal practice where I went over the old and new material and focused on maintaining my vocals during the strenuous choreography. Once that was over around 5pm or so, I was left to my own devices. Most of the time I would just check and see what the guys were up to. Sometimes I would just hole up in the hotel room and just relax.
The time passed by quickly, before I knew it, I was reserving plane tickets for my family to come to New York City for Thanksgiving since we had it off to spend with our families. Today was November 18th, and Thanksgiving was literally the next Friday. The guys were planning on inviting their families to NYC as well. I had already made reservations for my family to stay at the hotel. I was just lounging around in a sheer teddy Minho had bought for me the day before, as I had become quite the exhibitionist since becoming comfortable in my own skin. I didn't really mind being nude anymore. I loved my body.
Just then I heard a key being inserted into the lock on my door and I realized I was practically naked so I shot up and ran into my bedroom. Luckily it was only Minho.
"Jagiya...what are you doing? Oh, you're wearing it." Minho said, as he walked forward and saw what I wearing. I saw him bite his lip as I walked toward him, placing a hand on my hip and began modeling the teddy for him. He liked what he was seeing. "So sexy."
"Don't scare me like that. I thought you were one of the other guys."
"Who else would have a key to your room Jagiya?"
"Jin does."
"What the hell, really? He's not supposed to..."
"Yeah, well try telling him that." I said, as the memory of Jin walking in on me stepping out of the shower was still fresh on my mind. I sat back down at the computer and finished booking the plane tickets for my family. "Have you booked your plane tickets for your family yet?"
Minho completely ignored the question I had just asked. "He hasn't tried anything has he?"
I pulled my eyebrows together in frustration, as I glanced up at Minho. "Not yet, thank God. He creeps me out though Minho. I don't like how he looks at me."
"Yeah, Jin's been acting weird lately."
"You're telling me, he's now showing up at my practices and shit."
"If he does anything babe, let me know. I'll put an end to it." Minho said as he ran a finger through my hair. "As for the tickets, yes, I booked them. My parents are arriving the day before."
"Oh okay. Yeah I just booked tickets for them to arrive on the 25th, have we even come up with a game plan for Thanksgiving? Or..."
Minho interrupted me. "Yeah, Key's been wanting to get with you to come up with a menu. He wants to cook this huge elaborate dinner for everyone."
"Well I don't blame him. I kind of want to too."
"We still have promotion schedules though. I know you have to appear at the Thanksgiving Day Parade, are you going to be able to get everything done?"
"Minho, I got it. I'll just make sure the bring extra changes of clothes in between everything. Nothing I haven't done before." Minho nodded.
"You really are superwoman..." Minho trailed off before his eyes met mine. I went to smile but Minho leaned forward and took my lips in a passionate kiss. Minho and I got carried away in the kiss and before I knew it, Minho had me in his arms was carried me off the bedroom where we stayed until the late evening when we went our separate ways for the rest of the night.
