Chapter 21

Arriving at Kevin’s apartment, I had to stop before I entered. I took a deep breath preparing myself for whatever was coming. With a shaky hand I slowly opened the door and entered the apartment. It was completely quiet. It was actually kinda scary. I listened as hard as I could, trying to figure out if Kevin was anywhere in the building. Finally I heard some voices coming from the dining room. Slowly I started walking down the hall to the room. I reached to door and peeked inside. All of my friends were there with him. They all looked extremely worried, especially AJ. That was just what I needed. It was hard enough to face Kevin alone, but all of my friends too? I knew they woall all start yelling at me as soon as they saw me, and the thing that scared me most, was facing AJ. How would he react? He would probably hate me for the rest of my life. I had lead him to believe that we could have something together, and now I had run off to be with another man, a vampire.
Suddenly the room became dead quiet. I had been standing in my own thoughts and hadn’t realized that Howie had seen me. He, of course, had told the others that I had returned, and now all eyes rested on me. I looked at all of them without saying anything. I didn’t know where to begin. There were so many things I wanted to say, but at that moment I had completely forgotten what they were. It was funny really when you think about it. I could fight vampires, werewolves and other creatures of the night, but when I had to say something to my friends after I’d done something they thought was a mistake, I couldn’t form a coherent thought, because I was so scared. My mouth opened and closed as they all stared at me waiting for me to say something. Finally I managed to form one word,
“ Hi.” I said quietly.
“ Hi?” Howie screamed, “ All you can say is hi, when we have spend the entire night worrying about you!”
Stared at him completely shocked. I had expected people to blow up, people like Kevin and Jess, not not Howie. Howie didn’t have a temper. This was bad. I looked at him wide eyed,
“ I’m…I’m sorry!” I said. My voice was failing me again. Howie looked at me for a couple of seconds, before returning to his seat at the table. He mumbled something I couldn’t quite hear, but I’m sure it wasn’t nice. The rest of them were still staring at me. They looked like they had seen a ghost. Why did they look like that? I looked at Kevin, searching his eyes for some answers I didn’t get. All of a sudden I felt a pair of arms surrounding me, and I heard AJ’s soft voice in my ear,
“ Angel…oh god…are you okay?” I accepted the embrace and felt myself relax against his body. I sighed,
“I’m fine. Why are they all staring at me like they’ve seen a ghost?” I asked. He pulled out of the embrace and looked at me,
“ We all thought you were dead! You didn’t come back yesterday, and Kevin called us and told us that you had a fight.” He sighed and I saw tears glazing over his eyes, “ We thought you had been killed, when you didn’t come back.” I shook my head,
“No…No he would never do that!” I said silently, “ I came to tell you where I was all night.” I turned to look at the others and they all seemed to have relaxed a bit, except for Kevin, he had gone from looking shocked to looking pissed, but I decided to ignore him, as I sat down at the table next to AJ.
“ So what did happen?” Jess asked, taking Kevin hand in hers, silently telliim tim to stay quiet.
“ How much do you know?” I asked, trying to figure out where I should begin.
“ Just that you and Kevin had a fight and you ran out of here.”
“ By the way, what did you mean when you said he would never kill you? Who’s he?” AJ asked.
“ I’ll tell you in a minute, first you should know what the fight was about.” I told them. They all looked at me waiting for me to continue. “ Last night I told Kevin that I have feelings for Nick. I told him that I’m in love with Nick.” I looked at AJ when I said that. He looked away from, and I could see the hurt in his eyes, which made this even harder for me, but I had to do this. Jess was about to say something, but I raised my hand to keep her quiet, “ Please, let me finish.” I said. They all nodded reluctantly and I took a deep breath,
“ Of course Kev was furious, but I tried to tell him that I thought Nick felt the same way about me. When he didn’t want to hear it, I was hurt and disappointed, and I just felt like I had to get out of here.” I looked at them to see if they were with me so far.
“ So you went to the vampire lair?” Howie asked with raised eyebrows, like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“ Yes, after I had been wandering around for a while.” I told him.
“ So what happened when you got there?” Dani asked.
“ I knocked on the door and when Brian opened I told him I had to talk to Nick. At first he was angry, but then he sorta calmed down and then he told me that Nick wasn’t there. He told me where I could find him.” I looked at Kevin, and he seemed to be listening very hard to what I was telling them. “ So I went down to the lake, that’s where Brian told me I could find him. As I was walking around trying to find him, calling him, I suddenly heard his voice in my head. He told me he needed my help. That he was in trouble. So I went to where he told me he was. And when I saw him, he was surrounded by Joseph and his people. He was badly injured, and it looked like Joseph was about to kill him. So we came up with a plan, and I fought Joseph and Nick handled the other vampires. And then we slowly went back to the mansion.” I looked at them all, and saw that they where all trying to digest the information I had just given them.
“ Wait!” Kevin said, suddenly very interested in the story, “ How could Nick be surrounded? I mean, how could he be in trouble? He’s the most poul vul vampire in the world!”
“ I know. He didn’t tell me, but I ask him tonight…” I said. Kevin was about to tell me that I couldn’t go back there, but I looked at him and said,
“ I’m going back, whether you like it or not!” He closed his mouth and I continued, “ Anyway, when we got back to the mansion, Brian helped me get Nick upstairs to lay down. Nick fell asleep and Brian and I talked while he slept.”
“ You talked?” Howie asked looking surprised.
“ Yes, we talked! And Brian told me that he was sure Nick had feelings for me too. He said that’s why he hasn’t killed me. He loves me!” I said. “ So a while later Nick woke up, and I laid down next to him on the bed and we talked a little before I fell asleep.” It was a while before anyone said anything. I waited anxiously for someone to say something. All of a sudden AJ got up and went out of the room without saying a word. He didn’t even look at me. I was about to go after him, when Kevin finally said someth
“
“ Let him go! He just needs to have some time to himself.” I looked at Kevin and nodded, sitting down in my chair again. “ So maybe you were right. Maybe Nick really is in love with you too, but I still don’t trust him!” He continued. I smiled,
“ I’m not asking you to trust him, I’m asking you to trust me.” I said, “ Can you do that?” Kevin looked me in the eyes and nodded. “ Good!” I said. Everyone was quiet for a long time. Nobody really knew what to say, I guess, and I don’t blame them. This was a lot of information. Information they hadn’t really expected. Finally Dani spoke,
“ So what do we do now?” She looked at Kevin and then at me.
“ I need to know everything I can about that Joseph character, he’s more dangerous than we thought.”
“ Obviously! If he almost killed Nick, then there’s definitely something about him we don’t know…” Kevin said.
“ How do you think it was possible for him?” Jess asked.
“ What?” Kevin looked at her.
“ That he almost killed Nick! How was that possible?” Kevin sighed,
“I don’t know…The only way it could be possible, is if Joseph was Nick’s maker.” Kevin said.
“ But that’s impossible!” I said, “ Nick’s maker committed suicide, right after he had changed Nick!” I exclaimed.
“ I know!” Kevin said, looking at me, “ It doesn’t make sense!”
“ Nick knows who Joseph is, but he didn’t tell me anything last night, I didn’t ask.” I said.
“ Angel…you’re going over there tonight right?” Howie asked.
“ Yeah, I’m gonna ask him about it.” I said.
“ Good, ‘cause if he stronger than Nick, you definitely have to be careful with that guy!” Kevin said.
“ I know, but I’ve kicked his butt twice already, that’s why I don’t understand why Nick was so scared of him…I mean, sure he put up a fight, but it he wasn’t that strong!” I said genuinely confused.
“ Maybe he didn’t show his real strength?” Dani offered.
“ Could be.” I said, “ Let’s just see what we can find on him, and then as soon as it gets dark, I’ll go talk to Nick about all this.”
We all walked into the study and started digging through pile after pile, book after book, for information on Joseph, but little did it help. His name wasn’t mentioned in any of the books.
It was like he appeared out of the blue.
