Rob sat on the couch with a book in his hands, he wasn’t reading a single word, but still he made his way through it, turning the pages. He liked to pretend. He didn’t know why – but when he had to think about things, it helped to have a book in his hands without actually reading it. Of course this seemed silly when there wasn’t anyone else in the room, but it still worked like a charm every time – calming his nerves and clearing his mind.
Rob chuckled at the thought his quirks and closed the book. Since Gemma had left his apartment, it had been filled with an amazing silence. Rob couldn’t help but smile – to be honest, he hadn’t stopped ever since he woke up with his arms around her warm and sleeping body.
A part of him wanted to talk about the newest events, and the direction that it all had turned. But the one he usually would call, he couldn’t. Mike. He placed the book on the table in the front of him and got up from his comfortable seat. He reached the phone and started dialling Chester’s number. Rob knew that Chester would be able to give him some rational advice on what to do now – especially since Chester was so close to Mike. Rob wasn’t sure if he should wait when it came to talking to Mike. Or if he should grab the bull by the horns. While he heard the ringing tone, he laughed to himself thinking about Mike with horns sticking out of his forehead. His thoughts were cut short by the sound of Chester’s voice on the other end.
“Hello?” Rob cleared his throat to kill off his muffled laughter.
“Hey. It’s me. Rob.”
“Oh… hey! I was thinking about you.”
“Oh?” Rob was surprised to hear that. He wasn’t hanging out with Chestery ory often, so it sounded a little off to him that Chester would be thinking about him.
“Yeah… Mike was here last night. We didn’t really talk about you, but… you know.”
“Yeah.” Rob nodded as if Chester could see him. “Yeah, I know.”
“So, how are you, man?” Chester asked with a hint of concern but ended the sentence with a frustrated sigh, which only confused Rob even more.
“I don’t know, Chaz.” Rob sighed to let him know that he sensed something different about the way they were talking.
“I’m sorry, Rob.” Rob heard a voice in the background, and Chester whispered something away from the receiver. Some more mumbling went on and even though Rob tried hard to understand what was being said, everything was too muffled for him to make out any words.
“Don’t be. It’s not.” Rob didn’t know how to break the news to Chester as he knew Mike the best, and probably also knew how he felt about Gemma. “We are back together.”
“What?” The surprise in his voice boomed through the phone and startled Rob. “You and Gemma?”
“Yes. Me and Gemma.” Against his own will, a smile spread across his lips as the words slipped out, and he was sure that it would be obvious even on the other end of the phone. Chester was most likely to hear it in his voice.
“For real? I mean… “ Chester paused. “For good?” Again, Rob could hear some talking in the background and Chester seemed distant for a few moments, leaving Rob feeling somewhat usedused.
“Yeah…” Rob cleared his throat. “Chaz?”
“Yeah?!” Chester turned back to the receiver too quickly when responding.
“What’s going on?” Rob was still trying to make out what was being said behind Chester. Someone was clearly putting some kind of pressure on him.
“It’s… hold on, Rob. Please?” Without waiting for an answer, Chester put down the phone and Rob started being able to hear his own heartbeat increase its pace. For some reason he was nervous beyond words. Something inside told him that it was Mike. And that scared him. More than what he expected it to.
“Hello? Rob?” Rob’s thoughts were distracted as the phone was being picked up again and Chester’s voice again reached his ears.
“Yeah…” He wanted to know what was going on, but he didn’t know what to say to him.
“Are you sure you thought this through?” The question echoed in Rob’s mind as he was trying to find the right answer. But nothing would come to him, so he thought that he would buy some more time.
“What do you mean?” And then it hit him. “I love her.”
”I know you love her, man. But you have to be rational about this.” Chester’s voice sounded slightly irritated and Rob frowned.
“What is going on, Chester? Why are you acting all weird on me?” Rob felt himself get more and more annoyed with the situation and the talk with someone he thought he come to for support.
“Did you ask her about Mike?” Chester had a clear determination in his voice.
“What?” Rob didn’t feel like talking about Mike. He needed to talk about the new development in the situation that was him and Gemma.
“Did you ask her about Mike?” Chester repeated his question, and this time with a raised voice, not angry but more determined.
“I’m not sure what you are…” Rob sighed out loud. “I don’t….”
“Just answer my question, man.” Chester was making Rob feel more nervous. Why was he asking this question?
“No. Not really. We didn’t…” He paused and just as he was ready to continue, Chester started to talk.
“Don’t you think that you should have?” This time he sounded more concerned.
“Last night… “ Rob stuttered slightly and he took a deep breath to calm himself. “Yesterday… was about the two of us – and not Mike.”
“Whatever you say, man.” Chester let out a frustrated sigh. “But I just remember how you felt. You might not have really talked about it then. But we could all see it. The hurt.” He paused as to give Rob a chance to speak, but soon continued. “She really hurt you, man. And I don’t want to see that happen again.”
“I know.” Rob smiled when he was able to recognize the friend in Chester again. “But I trust her.”
“It’s up to you. But please be sure. And please … please, talk to her about Mike. Even though you say that you are back together… he’s still a part of this mess. And you guys need to sort it out. With him. Don’t forget that he might be just as confused as you two.” Rob was speechless, he really hadn’t given Mike any thought when it came to being hurt and confused. He had been too caught up in the happiness of having Gemma back in his arms.
“But I am sure. And I know that Mike is a part of it – but in order for Gemma and I to work things out we have to solely think of ‘us’ for a while.” Rob knew that what he said didn’t necessarily make much sense, but nothing was going to make him doubt his feelings.
“Look, Rob.” Chester hesitated a little before continuing. “Do you feel like, maybe, talking to Mike?”
“He’s there.” Rob nodded and said it more matter of factly than as question.
“Yes. He is.” Chester said it calmly as if not wanting to stir things up with the presence of the third party.
“I don’t know if I can just yet.” Rob started fidgeting with his hands. “I mean, talk to him. Now. It might be too soon. If you think about what’s going on with Gemma…” Chester’s previous words were eating at him. Why hadn’t they talked about Mike? And why hadn’t he asked her about her feelings towards him?
“It’s up to you. I mean, he’s cool with it if you wanna talk.” Chester was obviously trying to make peace between the two, but Rob just wasn’t sure if he was ready to.
“You think I should?” Rob asked nervously hoping that Chester had an idea as to what the best thing would be.
“It’s up to you, man.” Chester sighed. “It’s between you and him in the end. Not me and you guys.” Chester said while emphasising the fact that he wanted to have the two friends work it out.
“Okay then.” Rob said rather reluctantly but still with a hint of hope.
“Okay, what?”
“Okay… let me talk with him.” Rob’s palms were starting to get sweaty. He wanted to avoid these awkward situations, which was bound to happen.
---
At Chester’s place.
“Rob?” Mike clung to the receiver and was aware of the fact that his voice showed how nervous he was.
“I’m here.” Mike felt his breathing increase its pace as he heard Rob’s voice. Chester obviously noticed how he jumped and placed a hand on his shoulder to reassure him.
“So, what’s up?” Mike could hear himself talk but much to his surprise he didn’t really recognize his own voice. He could tell that Rob was nervous too from the long pause after his question. “Rob?”
“God, Mike. I don’t know where to start.” Rob took a deep breath and Mike sat down with his back up against the wall, closing his eyes from the tension. “What did Chester tell you?”
“He said that I had to talk to you myself.” Mike glanced over at Chester who was leaning up against the opposite wall.
“I see.” Mike hated the way that everything between them seemed to be so difficult. He just wished that he could turn back time. And then again, would he? Would he really have done anything differently? Even though he knew he should have.
“So…” Mike ran a hand through his hair and removed his gaze from Chester’s curious eyes. “What’s up? You know that you can tell me.”
“It’s about Gemma.” Mike held his breath and waited for Rob to continue. “Me and Gemma.” Mike exhaled and nodded to himself as it all became clear to him. He really didn’t need to hear anymore, but before he could say anything, Rob went on. “We are… back together. And I really hope that you are okay with it. Cause… cause we can’t keep on hurting each other like this.” Rob sighed which made Mike force his eyes shut. He was hurt, butwasnwasn’t exactly sure why.
“Nah… Rob, it’s cool, man. You guys belong together.” Mike kept his eyes closed, afraid of seeing the look in Chester’s eyes.
“Are you sure?” Rob’s question almost burned inside Mike. It made him want to spill out all of his feelings to Rob. But he couldn’t. Not yet anyway.
“Yeah. Of course I’m sure.” Mike felt more and more horrible for each word leaving his mouth. “As I said… you two belong together. I mean… was there ever any doubt?”
“I donnow…now…” Rob sounded confused, but Mike didn’t know any other way to react to the news.
“Trust me, dude. I’m fine.” With that Mike had no more words he could utter. No more lies.
“I’m glad.” Mike could almost hear the enthusiasm in his voice and it tore him apart. “I’ll see you at practice then.”
“Yeah… see you Tuesday.” Mike hung up, opening his eyes. They were met with Chester’s hurt and doubting look.
“Why didn’t you just tell him, Mike?” Chester shook his head and walked into the living room.
