The sun dazzled Hayden’s eyes, momentarily blinding him, as he stepped out of the limousine. Squinting and turning his head he extended a hand to assist his date. Long, slender legs appeared as a brow-raising slit parted to reveal creamy upper thighs. High, strappy sandals showcased feet recently pedicured with fire engine red polish. Elegantly, the figure emerged, one perfectly manicured hand accepting the gallant offer. Fans murmured in appreciation at the tall, blonde beauty who smiled warmly at the fans as she curled possessive fingers around Hayden’s crooked arm. Slithered into a blood red sheath whose plunging neckline matched the high slit up the legs, the young woman drew thtenttention of the myriad of cameras capturing newcomers to the red carpet. Dias wis winked from her ears and dripped down her chest to rest tantalizingly in the shadowed cleft of her breasts.
Hayden turned his head to smile at her, his ego lifted by the stunned gaze of all males in the vicinity of her. Amanda practically preened in the attention, gobbling up the exposure; sure it would help her career enormously. He knew she wouldn’t mind a night climbing all over him, but he ’t f’t fooled for a second. Her main goal was to get noticed. He was merely a means to her end. Well, at least she looked good on his arm. No one seeing them would ever guess he nursed a sore heart.
No one. Least of all Natalie. Amanda was the antithesis of the dark-haired, sloe-eyed woman who still prowled through hioughoughts. Where Natalie’s hair was brown, Amanda’s was blonde; Natalie was petite, Amanda, tall and curvy; golden brown eyes, blue. He winced inwardly as he admitted to himself that just as Amanda was using him, he was using her. But, he couldn’t let Natalie see how starved he was for her. He lived the life of a eunuch thanks to her. Sometimes it seemed as if he’d been castrated. He just couldn’t work up any interest while Natalie stayed on his mind. So, he poured hif inf into his work, his only respite from thinking of her.
Well, he mused, as he obediently turned this way and that as photographers shouted his name, maybe she’ll hear about this and know I’m not bothered by her lack of communication. From what he’d gleaned, she was as busy as he, locked feverishly into working on one movie after another. He’d left messages with her manager but Natalie never contacted him.
“This is so exciting,” Amanda murmured, her blonde head leaning towards Hayden to present an intimate picture for the paparazzi. “I can’t believe how everyone wants a shot of us.”
“They want a shot of you, you mean,” Hayden returned as they made their way down the carpet. “That dress has the guys dropping like flies.”
“Really?” Amanda turned wide eyes on him, a sly smile creeping across lips painted as red as her dress. “And does it knock your eyes out of their sockets, too?”
“It’s pretty lethal,” he agreed, inclining his head. Leaning closer, he added, “But not on me. I can’t do anything for your career except show up with you. You have to do the footwork yourself.”
The smile remained in place, slipping a little as Amanda’s eyes narrowed. “You are such a party pooper,” she purred, as someone yelled for them to turn towards another camera. “You are all business and no play, and you knoat tat they say, ‘all work and no play makes Hayden….”
“A dull boy,” he finished for her. They moved down the carpet and he chuckled. “True, I suppose, but it also keeps me working. There will be time for play soon enough.”
“And will that playtime include me?” Amanda stroked the sleeve of his jacket, her voice low and throaty.
“There’s Tom Cruise,” Hayden suddenly jerked his head towards a figure farther up the carpet. Amanda turned interested eyes on the man standing on the other side of a microphone, his date curled against him. All interest in Hayden waned and Hayden squelched the desire to roll his eyes. “You know he’s been dating her for a while now and there’s talk of marriage.”
“Oh, but I’m on the scene now,” Amanda barely restrained herself from lugging Hayden up to the other actor. “He won’t get married, he hasn’t met me yet.”
Hayden’s head fell back as he laughed at the outrageous statement. Amused by Amanda’s determination he turned twinkling eyes on her. “You are such the mercenary, Amanda,” he chuckled, one hand covering hers and squeezing, “I pity any man that falls into your trap.

Natalie turned to face Drew and straighten his tie for the tenth time. They had made it past the interview and were both relieved they could now venture inside, find their table, and enjoy the rest of the evening. Drew squirmed momentarily in his tuxedo and scratched his straggly chin. Playfully, Natalie swatted his hand away.
“Drew, let me fix this,” she chided, her tongue clucking against her teeth.
“You sound like a mother hen,” Drew muttered, wishing they were already at the after party.
“I know you’re more at home in your ripped jeans and playing your guitar, but a few hours from now it will be all over,” Natalie soothed, patting the bowtie in place. “There. You look hot.”
Drew snorted. “Yea. Right. I’d rather be onstage with the band. I can’t believe all the snobby…”
“Drew,” Natalie sighed, wondering yet again if bringing him had been such a good idea. Drew played with an up and coming rock band and this was not his scene. Still, he had been the one who had insisted he come with her. They’d barely dated a month, and it seemed a good idea at the time, but now…
“Ok, ok, I’ll behaverew rew brought her hand up to his chest and placed it over his heart. “Scout’s honor. But after this…I choose the next party we go to.”
Natalie couldn’t help herself and laughed at his mournful, pleading face. It had been a few months since she’d smiled so readily. Drew made her laugh and laughter had been in short supply lately. One movie after another. Each time she promised herself a vacation and each time another movie came along too good to pass up. She really did need a break. Next month she had to fly to London to shoot any extra footage that George had dreamed up since October.
George. Film. Hayden. Natalie’s lips tightened as the unwanted image of his tousled hair and laughing eyes slipped through her thoughts. The least he could’ve done was call her. What was he doing? Did he still sleep on his stomach when he was really tired? How was she supposed to react when she saw him again? Stomach in aching knots, she banished him from her mind, attemptio slo slam the door tightly shut where he couldn’t hurt her. At what point would she stop thinking of him?
“You know, your face is going to freeze if you keep that up,” Drew warned, dryly, as he took in her pinched expression. “If it does, I am NOT going to be seen with you. Everyone will think I’m dating an old woman.”
The remark received the response he aimed for. Natalilteilted her head as he imitated her expression. Laughter peeled from her and she slipped her hand into his. Drew grinned and shrugged.
The sound of tinkling laughter pierced Hayden’s ear above the din of Hollywood’s elite and their schmoozing. Brows drawn down, his head swiveled to find the source. Eyes narrowed, he searched the crowd. Again, the laughter swirled through the noise all around and found him.
Natalie lowered her head, her hand covering her mouth to suppress the laughter. Eyes shining she looked around to make sure she hadn’t made a fool out of herself. No one seemed to notice and she breathed a sigh of relief.
The moment their eyes made contact, Natalie’s stomach heaved. It couldn’t be! It just couldn’t be! Twenty yards away blue eyes lasered into her brown ones, the shock mirrored in frozen surprise. A heart that hadn’t beat strongly in a while, hammered in agitation at having been rudely awakened. Encased in a black tuxedo he was devastating to her eyes. Hungrily, her eyes roved over him, the image forever etched in her mind…as was the possessive hand curled around his forearm. Who was she? What was he doing with her? Natalie’s hand absently slid from her mouth as she stared. Jealousy stabbed at her with its vicious claws and dug painfully into her flesh. The palms of her hands started to sweat; coppery taste of envy flowed onto her tongue. And all she could do was stare in horrid fascination.
Hayden froze, transfixed by the haunting image in front of him. The misty memories of her had been no match for what his eyes beheld. Even from where he stood he could see the glorious brown of her tilted eyes and the way the thick lashes curled. In a crowd of beautiful people her ethereal allure cheapened the loveliest women. Absently, he noticed most of the women adorned in jewels, clothed mostly in tight, strapless red or black, coiffed in upswept hairdos that showed off the fancy earrings dangling from their ears. Even Amanda’s hair piled onto her head had been arranged with artful curls seeming to escape into tendrils along her neck. Natalie’s hair hung free from a center pawaviwaving away from her head to brush her shoulders when she moved and his fingers itched to thread through the strands and grip her head so he could taste the full, parted lips. Her dress fell off to frame the shoulders in a peasant style, a tiny ruffle around the top and down the front, closed by buttons; except the top button looked as if it had pulled free of its own accord and beckoned him. He had no clue who the designer was, nor did he care. The olive green of the dress hugged her slim hips and flared to just above her ankles reminding him of a sly, sensual gypsy. And who wore olive green to an awards show, anyway?
He knew she was startled by his presence. He could practically feel her heart beating froere ere he stood. Even from there he saw her nipples tightening against the fabric of the dress. The lump in his throat clogged his airway as he felt a stir in his groin answer her. But she turned away, grabbing the hand of the date he hadn’t even noticed and hurried indoors.
When he finally managed to swallow the lump and allow air to fill his lungs he registered Amanda’s impatient huffing. His first inclination was to follow Natalie and demand an explanation, but he didn’t dare. Protocol demanded he remain with his date and act as if all was right with his world. Turning to Amanda, he inclined his head and proceeded to the interviewing a his his head whirling with questions, stealing the earlier good mood from his soul. For the first time in a long while the beast within raised its head and growled.

The master of ceremonies spouted another joke and the audience roared from their tables. Under normal circumstances, Natalie would have laughed, too, but she sat immobile unable to so much as turn her head. Two tables away Hayden sat, his eyes always on her. She could feel him staring. Biting her lip she grimaced to herself, admitting that when he wasn’t looking at her, she was surreptitiously studying him. In profile, he was achingly handsome and every time he turned his head a little too quickly and their eyes met she felt a bolt of lightning sear her insides. The tension coiled steadily until she swore she would split in two from the strain. Beside her Drew laughed along with the audience, enjoying the show, oblivious to thece tce tearing her apart. For the first time, she noticed how completely opposite from Hayden he appeared. Green eyes, long black hair, scraggly goatee and mustache, crooked teeth, short stature…In one blinding moment, she hated him with a rage she didn’t understand and was appalled at the violent reaction. When the show broke for another commercial, Natalie excuhersherself under pretence of visiting the ladies room, her only desire to find a place of solitude where she could think. Escape! Her mind screamed. So, she walked as nonchalantly as she could until out of sight of the audience, and then ran for cover.
The moment she stood, Hayden watched from the corner of his eye, his mind deciding before she reached the door. As it opened for her, he stood, excusing himself, and followed. If he had to park himself in front of the restroom door to speak to her, he would. His long legs quickly ate up the distance to the door and he squeaked out just in time as the show returned to airing. Behind him the doors closed allowing no admittance until the next commercial break. Breathing a sigh of relief he looked around. The direction of the restrooms revealed no Natalie. Surveying the full area, he caught a glimpse of her hurrying in the opposite direction. Swiftly, he followed her path leading to the back entrance where he knew the limousines were parked for some of the stars.
Natalie rushed out the back door and sobbed a breath as a blast of warm air signaled her escape outside. Expecting to find the drivers she whipped her head back and forth searching for signs of life. The quiet unnerved her. Where was everyone? At the end of the road she spotted a tented area, the back of one driver visible. They were playing cards? No one was watching the area? What kind of security was that? With a thankful sigh she darted down the steps and cowered along the cars, carefully opening doors to find which one belonged to her. She’d left her tennis shoes on the floor in the back. The sandals hurt her feet, so she’d only put them on before she’d emerged at the red carpet. About eight limos down, she found her refuge and quickly darted inside where she let the tears loose in hopes they would wash her fractured emotions away.
Natalie lunged into a limousine, and Hayden made his move, eyes never leaving the vehicle. Mentally cros his his fingers, he silently stalked to the vehicle and grabbed the door handle. The door flew open under the excessive force and he vaulted in closing and lockin beh behind him. Startled, Natalie’s hands flew from her face, tear tracks evident on her cheeks. Across from her Hayden swore, grabbing at her hands and ing ing her onto him in hopes of holding her still and getting the answers that had eluded him for months.
When Natalie’s lips crashed down onto his, Hayden’s shocked eyes widened momentarily then shut under tnslanslaught of the weight and intensity of emotion pouring from her. Opening his mouth he let her tongue snake in and slither along his. Colors exploded behind his lids as his stomach dove and his groin rose in homage to the vixen lifting her dress to comfortably straddle his lap. The hand that had longed to grab her hair fisted the locks to hold her head steady while he plundered her mouth the moment she tried to retreat. A whimper of frustrated excitement buzzed along her lips and she wrapped her arms around his neck, grinding her hips down onto the hardened length under her. The answering moan rumbling deep in his chest encouraged her to slide along him again. Wet heat sought escape from between her legs.LackLack of oxygen forced their lips apart. Lungs sucking for air, they gasped, Hayden’s fingers deftly flicking open buttons to her waist, his lips slipping over the sensitive hollow of her throat, forcing her head back in a wanton display of need. Hands slid up her ribcage, thumbs circling, finding the tight buds pushing against the material covering them. A throaty, desperate moan rent the air and Hayden pulled back to stare greedily at the sight of his thumbs torturing the material covered nubs.
Natalie’s head fell forward against Hayden’s, lost in the haze of a long caged desire that burgeoned inside and threatened to blow her into nonexistence. When his fingers spread the material, hers slid along his scalp, urging him forward until his lips closed around one aching nipple and suckled hard, the rhythmic tonguing pulling at the line connecting her breast to her nerve bundled center. As he ld hed her into a frenzy, Hayden reached between them to undo his fly, all raal tal thought replaced by one…to bury himself deep inside her and feel her convulse around him. Nothing else mattered. The world could fall apart around them for all he cared. His only concern was exploding into her tight, wet, heat and giving her his seed to keep. He had to have her if only once more. Just to be one with her.
As his fingers freed himself Natalie lifted her hips, her mewling s ens encouraging him to take her. His digit slid under her panty line and delved into her core, testing her readiness. She moaned and moved against his hand. It had been so long since she’d been so wet and needy. Only under the cover of night did she wake with the slick preparation from another dream of him sliding in and out of her, taking her in ways that shocked even as they titillated.
“Yes, yes…” she gasped as his lips slid from their place at her breast and up towards her mouth.
His hot, heavy breathing against her skin announced his intense need for her and quickly she moved as he withdrew his finger and held the undergarment to the side.
“Now,” the word strangled from his throat.
Before he could form any coherent thought she was moving over him. One hand grabbed her hair, one gripped her hip tilting her forward and he lunged upward scraping over her blood engorged center, meeting her halfway, a groan of excruciating rapture cut off by his mouth covering hers. The tight, slick passage stretched to take him then squeezed his shaft, easing a moment then squeezing again. He bit her lip in sweet agony and she lifted off him slowly then slid down, the slippery, suctioned sound of their mating arousing them to fever pitch.
It had been too long and it was too good to last. Hayden grabbed Natalie’s hips with both hands and lifted her along his length until the tight bundle of nerves buzzed, frantic and angry, between her legs. Lifting her head she met his burning eyes, unable to look away, intent on taking him with her. His hands helped rock her as she grinded down on him, rhythmically squeezing him in just the oh-so-perfect way that she knew took him to places far beyond this life. Briefly he closed his eyes, savoring the feel of her tightness surrounding him, then opened them to stare deep into the burnished brown orbs that opened the windows to her soul.
A wild, decadent rhythm proved too far beyond their reins. Natalie gasped first. “I can’t…hold…on,” her head flopped back a moment then fell forward again. “Hayden…I’m…ah…help…me….”
The excited cries she strove to quiet spilled past her lips as the first cataclysmic clenches spread through her, small ripples spreading through her body, expan to tingtingle along every raw nerve. As her eyes glazed, Hayden darted forward to grasp a pebbled nipple and suck hard. A keening cry signaled her complete release into climax and she contracted hard around him, gripping at his lingling shaft in deliciously firm contractions, her body shivering uncontrollably in his arms.
Sharp nails dug into his scalp and he pushed her down hard on him, his body giving in to his own urgent, torrential release. Waves of pent up torment jetted out of him, shuddering violently into her, unraveling the torturous tangle that had wound itself into a tight ball of dread inside him. Free as he’d only ever been with her, he grunted his pleasure into her neck and savored the automatic, desperate writhing of her on top of him while she greedily grasped at his length. The smell of their sex hung heavy in the air as he rode out his climax until her constricting grip and release wound down and soothed the animal in him to do the same.
Head buried against her chest, Hayden filled his lungs with air, the effort draining what little energy he had left. A contented, smug smile tugged at his lips but widened into a satiated yawn against her skin. Fuzzyheaded, he couldn’t piece together where he was or why they were in a car and he didn’t give a damn. He was buried deep inside Natalie and all was right with the world.
As Hayden drewll, ll, concentric circles on her back with gentle fingers, Natalie rested her heavy head on top his and buried her nose in his hair, breathing deep. The smell of him swelled her heart, the familiar scent pricking her eyes again. It was too much. She felt too much! How had it come to this?
Suddenly, she struggled upright, shaking fingers buttoning her dress and smoothing her hair. Tears trickled down her cheeks again, lending her eyes a fevered brilliance as she lifted herself free of a bewildered Hayden. Leaning forward she pressed gentle lips to his then pulled abruptly away her voice whispered and trembling.
“I love you.”
Before Hayden could form any thought, she was gone.
