Some times you don’t really realise it how happy you are. Some times you are fortunate, so lucky, and you take it for granted, you just go on.
And then some times you stop, look around you and it takes your breath away as you suddenly take it all in – all the joy, all the love, all the life. It was one of those moments.
Daniel closed his eyes and let the warm sunshine caress his face. He felt Darren snuggle up to him. Daniel smiled. This would have never happened at home. Daniel put his shades on and raised his upper body on his elbows. He looked at the people passing by. No one particularly cares about two guys laying on the grass in a park of San Francisco, snuggling up to each other, looking at each other through their dark shades, giving in to a moment of pure simple happiness.
Maybe they will have plenty of those moments in future. But maybe that’s it. Maybe that’s the happiest they will ever be, Daniel thought.
“What’s the dark cloud over your face, dear?” Darren asked, taking Daniel’s hand.
Daniel hadn’t realised his thoughts were reflecting clearly in his face. He looked away to a side and suddenly saw a beautiful butterfly landing on the grass not far from them. Its wings were dark brown, with some deep red shade and a touch of black, it looked like made of velvet. Daniel couldn’t take his eyes off, if he touched those wings, he knew it would be like soft velvet to his fingers. But he knew he couldn’t touch it. If he touches it, it he takes it in his hands, no matter how gentle he is, it will die. It always dies. He looked over at a screaming child passing by them and a frowning mother trying to calm the child down. When Daniel looked back to where he saw the butterfly just seconds ago, it was gone. Or maybe he just couldn’t see it any more.
Daniel felt Darren squeezing his hand. Daniel looked at him. And realised something. If you fall in love with a butterfly, you will always dread that moment when you look away and it’s gone in an instant. But bring it home and it is dead.
They both looked at two men passing by. The men held hands. They wore such similar clothes they could have been twins. Tight blue jeans, white t-shirts. They walked a park as casually as it’s the most natural thing to do. And it was.
“You like this city?” Daniel asked.
“I like you in this city,” Darren said, letting go of Daniel’s hand and laying down on the ground, hands behinds his head. “I like how happy you are. You seem to be happier than I have ever seen you.”
“Well it might have nothing to do with the city,” Daniel said.
“And it might have everything to do with the city,” Darren said. “I know it’s getting to you I am not … not so…,” Darren sighed, “not too conscious about my sexuality…”
“Don’t!” Daniel stopped him, “Don’t! It’s good to have you snuggle up to me in people. It’s good to be able to hold you. I managed to forget that nobody knows us here and that’s why…”
“But I love you just the same here and back home… and anywhere…”
Daniel stretched his body next to Darren’s and looked at the sky. ”I am very happy today,” he whispered.
“Is there anything I can do to keep you in this happy state?” Darren asked.
“Yes,” Daniel replied and closed his eyes again.
“Oh my god! You made it, hon, you made it!” Daniel was hugged and kissed. Darren stayed few steps behind waiting to be introduced.
Daniel kissed back an overly painted and very pretty drag queen, dressed to kill.
“Shelley, you’re a scream…what’s with the hair colour?” Daniel laughed.
“Wigs, darling, wigs…” he batted heavy deep red eyelashes towards Darren, “and this is…?”
Daniel turned around and pushed Darren forward into Shelley’s arms, “Darren, my band mate, if you heard!”
Darren was hugged by a cloud of expensive perfume and then stepped back to catch his breath. Shelley was so pretty Darren had to keep his distance to have a better look.
He had those high cheekbones and perfectly shaped female face. Darren smiled thinking how many shaving marks all this make-up hides… Shelley had flaming red hair and a dress to match, perfect but a bit too muscular for a mini-dress body, glittery red outfit was finished off by a long black coat. He was taller than Daniel and talked in a deep sensual voice. There was no doubt Shelley was a man.
“Oh dear, my boys, come on in!” Shelley instructed with a wave of an arm.
Darren and Daniel were led into a small basement nightclub, full of cigarette smoke and half-naked bodies. They sat down at a table in the very corner of the room and beer was served to everyone. Darren watched amused how Shelley drank his beer through a straw to protect his lipstick.
“See, I’ve settled down!” Shelley announced.
“Decadence… It is all so 80s,” Daniel laughed. Then turned to Darren, “Shelley and I knew each other many years ago in Brisbane but she went for the bright lights of America and look where we are now…”
“My paradise. It’s called The Blitz,” Shelley smiled a charming smile. Then turned to Daniel and pecked his cheek again, “Jeesus, Danny boy, I am so glad to see you!”
“We are here for some work,” Daniel said, looking over at Darren, like trying to involve him in the conversation.
“Yes, I heard, love, you’re doing well, aren’t you? I knew it’s gonna be all the best things for me and you,” Shelley smiled his killer smile again.
“We are here for concerts, Shel, 6 shows starting Wednesday,” Daniel explained. His voice disappeared in the club noise as he leaned closer to Shelley.
Darren looked over at the dance floor. Men kissing men, some topless figures pressing against each other, some over-dressed queens dancing on their own. They had been there for barely 15 minutes and Darren was already wondering how Shelley’s make-up wasn’t melting in the heat. Shelley also kept the coat on all the time.
Daniel waved for a second beer. He was laughing as Shelley whispered something in his ear. Darren reminded himself he always wanted to meet more of Daniel’s friends.
Something was happening on a small stage at the other end of the club, the crowd gathering around it in a circle.
Shelley touched Darren’s shoulder, speaking louder over the increasing noise, “it’s my biggest pride and joy, I think we should go and see her!”
They pushed their way through the crowd to the very front of the stage. Darren had to catch his breath as a blond figure appeared on a miniature stairs coming down from possibly a dressing room that was located above the club.
A long well-shaped leg shot in the air pushing a tight black dress up the hips and revealing black knickers. The blond graciously made his way down the shaky stairs, like he was born wearing stilettos.
“That’s my girl Jean, like in Norma Jean,” Shelley screamed in Darren’s ear, then leaned towards Daniel, probably to say the same thing.
Jean had a strong low voice and sang “Spin me round” with such an enthusiasm and amazing choreography that “dead or alive” would wish she was around back then… She… Darren had a grin on his face. He was actually having fun. Daniel’s hand never left his waist as they strolled through the club and picked up more beers, after Jean had finished her performance and disappeared behind a door above the stage. Shelley followed her.
All the tables seemed to be taken, Darren and Daniel sat by the bar, close enough to each other so their knees, hips and shoulders were touching.
“Cheeky bastard, never told me anything about your friends, huh?” Darren asked, smiling and pushing Daniel’s shoulder gently.
“Well we never really talked about. And I didn’t want you to run away screaming, god knows I already feared that …” Daniel winked at him.
“Oh please did you think I’ll run seeing a transvestite?”
“My best friend transvestite? Yes…” Daniel became serious. “Shelley and I used e vee very close friends, she’s 15 years older and saw me through all my dramas at 15 and 16, when no one else was there for me…”
“You’re kidding? 15 years older?” Darren was doing quick math in his head, “Unbelievable! So what happened?”
“Nothing happened, we each had a life to live. She wanted to move to America…”
“She was always a she?”
“She was never of a defined gender,” Daniel laughed. “Hey, you want to go back to the hotel before we get wasted?”
“Nah, I’d like another beer if you don’t mind…”
“Me? Beer? Mind?”
They laughed and kissed on the lips. Not even looking around. Shelley caught them in the act and ordered a bottle of champagne while laughing her deep sexy laugh. Jean joined them and the night lasted till the early hours of the next morning.
