Leila looked down at the alien creature before her.
It was so weird - she wanted to kill it at first, and she had done a full circuit of the block and came back to the Inn with the creature in the back, hoping to get a knife and slit its throat before it started multiplying or something - but then she was overcome with something else...
She no longer wanted to kill her - it - whatever it was - but she wanted to help it.
So she had taken it here, to the best place she could think of - Nona Alda’s.
Nona had fussed over the creature - there was no fear in the elderly woman’s eyes - only excitement and joy.
It was almost as though she had expected the creature to come to her.
The monster was in very bad shape - Nona Alda had to slice open its chest and braced its broken ribs - when she did so they instantly healed - and it was the same with the strange ‘Z’ jointed arm - as soon as she linked the bone back together, the bone melded itself almost as good as new.
Nona Alda was ecstatic.
Now a few days on the creature was still here, lying almost lifelessly on the floor of the mobile home’s kitchen floor - here it was, a monstrous mishmash of warped flesh that should’ve existed somewhere else - somewhere far, far away from Earth.
Leila sat down, keeping her eyes on the creature, cradling her music box in her hands as she stared at the weird beast before her.
Suddenly the beast stirred - a small area on its chest glowed a soft warm pink as its eyes flickered open - Leila sat frozen, barely daring to draw breath.
She hadn’t been afraid of the creature before - no; something made her feel okay then - apart from the fact that it had been injured.
Well, it was healed now...
The creature’s raptor head looked up at her, then the entire body moved and the alien beast drew level with Leila’s face.
“Mike... Take me to Mike...” The creature murmured.
“Mike - Mike’s in hospital...” Leila began, but the creature silenced her, touching one turtlish finger to her lips.
“Friend. Rosie and Mike friend.” The beast said.
“R - Rosie? Is that your name?” Leila asked - unable to restrain herself.
“Yes.” Rosie replied.
“Mike’s your friend? How - what? Um...” Leila’s brain, which had been racing on overdrive, was now starting to overload.
There were so many questions!
“Tell later. Take me to Mike. Mike needs me.” Rosie said.
“But you can’t go walking down the street looking like that...” Leila protested stupidly.
Rosie sighed and shook her head in a human gesture of annoyance.
Her skin changed colour and in a matter of seconds she was invisible.
“Safe now.” Rosie said.
Leila stammered something that didn’t make any sense and stood up - a strange thought for that particular instant coming to her head.
Should she go and wake Nona Alda up and tell her where she and the extraterrestrial were going?
Leila shook her head.
No, best let the weary old woman rest.
“C’mon.” Leila said, carefully walking around the monster, feeling the air and then hurrying off the mobile home, down the street and down around the block, with fleshy knuckles and great plodding feet echoing her every step and a music box still clasped in her hands.
