Chapter 22
Tia stared at him. She couldn’t form the words to come from her mouth. Orlando stared at her with a heated glare.
“Answer me!” he shouted at her. “Is this the reason that you left me?” He stood up and walked towards her. Tia felt the tears pooling in her eyes. He wasn’t supposed to see them. He wasn’t supposed to know.
“Yes.” She said in a whisper.
“Bloody fucking hell! You left me because you were having an affair? With a woman!” Tia tried to speak again, but the words were stuck in her throat. Orlando walked past her, shoving the photos in her hands. His own eyes brimming with tears. He began to pace. His hands in his hair.
“Didn’t I satisfy you darling?” he said in a mocking tone. “You had to have the pussy and the bull?”
“That’s not fair Orli.”
“Not fair? I’ll tell you what’s not fucking fair. Why couldn’t you have told me the truth? The truth that I didn’t make you happy. That you needed someone else. Someone that obviously isn’t a man!” He stopped pacing and sat on the bed. His head in his hands.
“It isn’t what you think.” Tia said quietly. Orlando’s head shot up to look at her. He wiped the tears from his eyes.
“Not what I think? Tia, look at the fucking pictures! Don’t tell me it isn’t what I think. It’s there, in living color!” He yelled at her. Tia slowly walked towards him and kneeled in front of him. She was practically sobbing. She needed to tell him the truth. It was too late to go back.
“Please Orli, let me explain.”
“Don’t call me that. Only my friends and loved ones call me that.” He sneered at her. This was too much for him to take. Tia felt her heart break at his words. She tried to take his hand but he pulled away. “Don’t touch me. I’m not man enough remember.” This caused Tia to cry even more. She sat with her hands on her knees.
“I didn’t have an affair. I’ve never had an affair.”
“Yeah right.”
“You wanted an explanation and I’m giving you one.”
“Go on with your story.” He said. His eyes still glaring at her.
“When I graduated from high school, I moved to L.A. right after graduation. I wanted to have fun. I wanted to be a movie star. I wanted to be famous.” She glanced up at him. She could hardly stand seeing the hurt in his eyes.
“After three weeks, I was out of money. I didn’t have a job and I only had two days left on the hotel room that I was staying in. One day, this guy came up to me and handed me his card. Told me I was the next big thing. He told me to call him and he would take some preliminary pictures of me for my portfolio. So I called him. Not knowing what I was getting myself into.”
She stood up and picked up the pictures that she had dropped before. She looked at them with disgust. Orlando watched her.
“I went to his studio and he told me that he would be taking nude pictures of me. I protested. Told him I wasn’t into that sort of thing. But when he told me how much money he would pay me, I had no choice. I was broke.”
“You could’ve gotten a job doing something else.” Orlando interrupted.
“I could’ve. But not making what he was offering me. I was nervous as hell. I’d never been naked in front of anyone before. He gave me a drink to help relax me. One drink turned into probably a dozen.” She turned back to look at him. To make sure he was still listening.
“The next thing I knew, I was on this bed with another woman. The woman in the pictures. I didn’t know who she was. To this day I still don’t know who she is. She touched me, kissed me. And the whole time, he just kept snapping away. I must’ve passed out after a while. When I woke up, I was the only one in the studio. There was an envelope sitting next to my clothes. It was filled with money and a note telling me to come back in a couple of days for some more photos. I got dressed, grabbed the money and never went back. I bought a bus ticket back home to New York. I was humiliated by what I had done. The only one that knew what happened was Lisa. She knew something was wrong the minute I stepped back into our parents’ house.”
“This is an interesting tale darling,” he said sarcastically, “but please enlighten me as to what this has to do with your leaving.” Inside, he ached for her. Tia half laughed and half cried.
“Shortly after we returned from New Zealand, I got a call from your management. Asking me to come to their office.”
“My management? I don’t understand.” She turned to look at him. Wringing her hands together.
“The photographer had sent them the pictures. He figured since you were on the verge of stardom, he could get some quick cash. He remembered who I was and since we had not hidden our relationship, he dug out the pictures.” Orlando sat there in disbelief. What was she saying?
“In the end, my father paid him a great deal of money to acquire not only the pictures, but the negatives as well. Your management told me that it would be in your best interest if I left you. Avoid a scandal they told me. They couldn’t have their golden boy have a girlfriend with a sordid past.” Orlando stood up, his hands in his hair once again. Tia was crying. She didn’t wipe away the tears. He began to pace.
“So a few days after my father got the pictures, I packed up the things from the flat and waited for you to come home.”
“And you told me that you didn’t love me anymore. That we couldn’t see each other.”
“That I was going home. And that I never wanted to see you again.” She looked at Orlando who was now staring out the window. Tia’s body was racked by the sobs that engulfed it. She sank back down to her knees. “I’m sorry Orlando. You don’t know how much.”
Orlando felt a rage go through him. He turned to look at her. Watched as she cried. It ate at him, but he was angry. He went down to her level and grabbed her shoulders. Forcing her to look at him.
“You’re sorry? We had so much together Tia! You were my life! I didn’t want to live without you!”
“I’m sorry. Put yourself in my shoes. You wanted to be an actor so much and I wasn’t going to let this stand in your way. I figured I was doing what was best for you. For us.” She cried.
“You figured wrong!” he yelled, “You should’ve trusted in me! In our love. In us Tia! We could get through anything. A few pictures of you naked would hardly have ruined my career. Do you honestly think that my career came first? Do you?” he yelled.
“I’m sorry.” She said again. He pushed her away from him and he stormed out of the room.
“Orli!” Tia yelled after him. She raced after him down the stairs. He was in Lisa’s SUV before Tia was out the door. He started the ignition and gave her a look before he tore out of the driveway. Tia sat down in one of the chairs on the porch. Sobbing profusely.
“I’m sorry Orli bear.”
