Chapter 21: Expected at the wrong time…
We got a call early in the morning of February 25th. Marcus Luke Callaway Jr. was born, Six pounds, eight ounces, twenty two inches long. Mark was completely ecstatic, the little boy had a full head of blond hair like Sara. Mark was hoping he would have his eyes. I have never seen a more energetic parent.
Glenn and I went to visit Sara and the baby a week after he was born, He was a cutie. I gave Mark hell, saying it was a good thing he looked like Sara. “If he looked like you I would feel sorry for him. He’s cute. You’re not!” I think If I wasn’t holding his son at that point he would have whacked me. I smiled and told him I was joking, and he forgave me.
Never get on the wrong side of a Bad ass biker Daddy.
Glenn held Marcus while Mark and I fixed Sara’s favorite dinner for her. I came back in to the room to tell them to come eat and Glenn, the only one in the room with the baby at this point, looked at me. He had a look on his face like he had just fallen in love. He smiled at me and then back to Marcus.
“He’s beautiful.”
I nodded, sitting on the chair he was in. He held the tiny little bundle up to me and I took him, prepared to carry the little boy to the kitchen, when Glenn took my arm and held me to him. I looked over my shoulder at him as he spoke into my ear.
“I want one Fay.”
I turned, holding Marcus so I could look at him. He was asleep, so small and tiny but I could tell he would be as big, in the long run, as his father.
“Glenn? I…”
“Please Faith…” He pulled me close, the baby between us. I had no clue where the hell this was coming from. We did want kids, but now? The both of us looked down at Marcus as he moved a bit. I did want one too, but not now. It was too soon.
“No Glenn. Not now. I want to be married before I have a baby.”
“Is that an Ultimatum?” His eyes were searching mine and I moved Marcus back to my shoulder to keep him from fussing.
“It’s a promise. When you marry me, if we can, I will have a baby. And no marrying me just so you can have one.” I kissed him on the nose and smiled. “Don’t take it wrong, hun. I do love you, and want to marry you and I do want a baby with you, but I was raised to be married before all that. Matt and Jeff are the exception. I don’t want us to be married out of obligation to our kids.”
He smiled and nodded, giving me a kiss, then one on Marcus’s forehead. “I Love you Sunshine.”
At this point, Mark came out with Sara behind him, wondering where we were. I handed Mark his son and took Glenn’s hand and we followed them. That conversation was not the last we had discussing children.

In Early March, Vince and the creative team were considering “Unmasking Kane” and sending Glenn and I into a heel turn later, in the summer. Glenn was torn on the subject and I was no help to him unfortunately, not really having an opinion. I had found literally thousands of ‘Kane: UNMASKED’ pictures plastered all over the internet. Half the free world knew what he looked like. I didn’t see how it mattered whether the character was unmasked or not so left it to Glenn. It stressed him out to no end, but he decided to do it. It wouldn’t come until later in the summer so he didn’t harp on it for a while.
It was St. Patrick’s Day, right before Wrestlemania when Shane Helms came to my and Glenn’s Locker room. I was in the shower after my match, when I heard Shane screaming hysterically and Glenn trying to calm him down. They quieted down right before I turned the water off, wrapped a towel around myself and walked out.
“What the hell is going on?” I held my towel on with one hand, grabbing another with the other and wiping my face. Glenn was throwing our stuff in our bags, threw me a shirt, jeans and old tennis shoes. He looked like he was gonna cry, while Shane was in the corner apparently talking to some airline.
“Get dressed Faith. We’re leaving.” Glenn stood and handed me my bag and sent me behind the bathroom door to get dressed.
I came back out and wondered why we were leaving so fast. “Where are we going?”
Shane looked at me with tears in his eye and took my hand. “Faith, Gilbert called me while you were in your match. Jeff, Matt and the girls were driving back from Raleigh when they got in a bad wreck. They’re at Raleigh Community Hospital. Amy is in Labor and Jess may lose hers. Your Dad wants you home now. You and Glenn have tickets to Raleigh waiting for you at the airport, gate 16. Jillian will pick you up there. Go.” He gave me a peck on the cheek as Glenn led me off. “Go see your family.”
I think I was in shock, it didn’t register until Glenn and I pulled up at the airport. I cried all the way through the airport until we got to the gate. As we waitied, Glenn grabbed me by the shoulders and held me, shaking me a bit.
“Stop. I know, you might lose a family member. But losing your mind right now will do nothing.” He held me until I stopped bawling and stood, telling me countless times it would be alright. We boarded the plane and, after we were seated, I put my head into his chest and cried.
I survived the plane ride, all cried out, and ran off the plane as fast as I could. I found Jillian and quickly introduced her to Glenn as we ran out. I took the keys to her little Honda, Glenn sitting in the back with absolutely no room, and raced down the road to Raleigh Community Hospital.
When we got there It was hard for even Glenn to keep up with me. It was almost 1 am when I raced to the ER desk and demanded to know where my brothers were. The Nurse looked at me like I was nuts when I heard my name from behind me.
“Faith!”
“Daddy?” I ran up to him and got him in a bear hug, tears starting to flow again. “Daddy, where are they?”
“Upstairs in the Maternity Ward. Jeff’s got some stitches and Matt’s got a gash on his arm but they’re fine. Jessica is being C-sectioned, a piece of Glass got her in her side and they have to take the baby. Amy is upstairs recovering. She had one of each about two hours ago.”
Glenn came up to Dad and I, followed by Jillian. He asked Dad if everyone was ok and relayed again what was going on. I left them, heading to the elevator and the Maternity Ward. Glenn said he would met me, wanting to make sure Dad was OK and talk to him. Jillian was right behind me and held my elbow as we got on the elevator.
She smiled and talked to talk me down, apparently thinking I was going to go stir crazy. “Now Faith, Don’t you go and do anything silly. They will be fine. If the baby dies then…”
I turned to her and felt my heart go cold. “If that baby dies it will be losing a member of my family. You wouldn’t understand the meaning of family to the rest of us. No matter what, we may lose everything, but we have our family. You’re not a member of this family Jillian, you wouldn’t understand.” I got off at the maternity floor and went to the desk to ask for Matt, Jillian behind me, and from what I could see an offended look on her face. I didn’t care. She is not my mother, even though she acts like it. Something still doesn’t hit me right about her.
No woman will ever replace Ruby Hardy.
The reception nurse called back and Matt was there to get me in a minute. Jillian didn’t go and I was glad of it. I followed him down the hall to Amy’s room. We walked in and there was Amy, more beautiful than ever, my soon-to-be sister-in-law holding a tiny wrapped bundle. She was feeding the baby and nodded it was alright for me to come over. I pulled a chair over and looked at the one of the newest members of my family.
“Faith, I would like you to meet your niece, Mattea Marie Hardy.” I looked at the bald little sleeping mass and smiled. I couldn’t tell who she looked like, her face still being puffy and everything but I knew she would be gorgeous. I smiled down at Amy who looked up at Matt carrying what had to be my nephew.
“Matthew Moore Hardy Jr. This is your Aunt Faith. Mind his head.”
“I know how to take care of a little one, Matt. Aww, he is precious. Are you going to call him Matt Junior or…?”
He shook his head as a knock hit the door. He went to answer it, calling over his shoulder that they would call him Moore. Jeff came in. He threw a hug around our elder brother, tears flowing down his face, smiling somberly at Amy and I.
“I have a son. Jeremy Edward Hardy. Born about an hour ago.”
Amy nodded and Matt asked how Jess was before I could even say anything. “Good. She’s better than I am right now.”
I asked why and he sat on the bed, breaking down. “The Glass ripped her apart. Jeremy will be alright and she’ll live, but…” He took a towel from Matt and blew his nose. “She’ll never have anymore. That’s it for us.”
I held onto my brother as he cried, his hopes of having a bigger family gone. He sat up after a while, wiping his face. He stood, “I’m going to see her, she should be ready now.”
I asked if I could go to and he said it would be alright. I said goodbye to Amy, Matt and the twins, and followed Jeff down the hall. We walked into a sterile looking room, Jess was in a bed near the middle. She looked honestly awful, tubes in her nose, an IV in her arm and she was damned pale. Her not-so-green hair just added to the effect of her looking weak. Still she reached toward Jeff, who gave her a light peck on the cheek, obviously afraid of breaking her.
She looked around a bit then to Jeff and I. Her voice creaked as she spoke, it looked like it was a bit painful for her. “Where’s Jeremy?”
Jeff said the doctors took the baby to make sure he wasn’t more badly hurt than they thought. Jess nodded and looked to me, putting her hand on mine. “Jeff tell you?”
“That you two can’t have anymore?” She nodded and I replied that he had. “I’m sorry Jess.”
“Don’t be sorry Faith. Nothing to be sorry about. The Goddess has plans for this. I was thinking while Jeff was gone. Maybe we could adopt. We’ll talk about it later though.” She looked around a bit and frowned. “Where’s your buddy at? You two are usually connected at the hip, or other certain parts of your anatomy.”
I told her Glenn was downstairs. She at this point ordered Jeff to go get him and asked me to stay so they could wait on Jeremy to come back. The nurses came in a few minutes later, giving her another bag of saline and electrolyte solution. One came in carrying a armload of blue covered baby. Jess held her hands out and bonded with her son. I peeked my head over her shoulder and smiled at the puffy little red face.
“Hello Jeremy. Oh you’re so cute for being such a puffy little bubby. You and Amy were blessed with cute kids, Jess.”
She smiled down at her son and cooed at him. He woke and wailed. Jess decided he was hungry and tried to get him to latch onto her. He did after a few minutes and that stopped the screaming. He fell asleep after a minute and I took him from his mother and put him in the incubator.
“He’s a week premature but the doctors said he would be ok.” She lifted her hospital gown to look at her wounds and I felt sick. A deep looking, oozing gash ran down her right side from about halfway down to right above her hip, another ran almost parallel to it about three inches away, both held together with heavy staples. She pointed to this one and told me it was the one that they had decided to take Jeremy from. “There was no sense making another cut, they told me. They extended this one and just took him. They said they found Glass shards in there when they took my uterus out.”
I asked her if she knew what happened. She said Jeff had told her they hit a slick oil spot on the road and He had lost control of the car. They were driving her New Avalanche, which was now a total. He had hit a telephone pole and that is what caused all the flying glass. Jess had apparently been sitting in the front seat, asleep when it had happened, waking up to the pain of Glass and realization she might lose her son.
“As you can see, were ok now. Scars heal and the pain will go away after a while, but we’re here.”
A soft knock came from the other side of the door and I looked up to see Jeff and Glenn walk in followed by Jillian. I walked over to grab Glenn to show him the baby. He held Jeremy up, taking him over next to Jess and sitting in a rocking chair. He cooed to the little boy and I asked Jeff where Dad was.
“He went down to see Amy and Matt for a bit then he’d be up. I think he’s been up too long. Poor guy’s been sucking down strong coffee like there’s no tomorrow.”
Glenn at that point, yawned. I got on his case about it being contagious, because so did I and little Jeremy. I took my nephew from him and handed him to Jeff. Glenn looked at me with the same tint to his eyes he had when we had gone to see Marcus. I shook my head and told him we would talk later. Jess spoke up at this time, actually just clearing her throat to get our attention.
“Ok you lovebirds. Jeff and I want to ask you something. We were going to ask you next week, but things change.” Jeff stood next to his wife and looked Glenn and I in the eye, moving back and forth between the both of us. Jeff looked at his fiancée and turned red. She shook her head and spoke, making sure to look me in the eye as she did.
“Will you two stand Goddessmother and Godfather to Jeremy?”
Glenn looked to me as I gaped at her. “You mean if something happens to you two…?”
“That you will take care of him. We all know how dangerous it is in sports entertainment. If something happens to one or both of us, we know the whole family would take care of him but we want you two to be his guardians.” I nodded and then looked over at my lover.
“Well? You wanted to be a father, close enough for now?” He nodded and looked to Jeff.
“I would be proud to be his Godfather. Do I get to baby-sit too?”
Jess and Jeff both nodded adamantly and even Jillian giggled as they said we could baby-sit as much as we wanted.
We talked for a while. Dad came in finally and said he was tired. “I’m getting too old. Three Grandchildren in one night. And I’m more tired than their mamas.” Jillian said she was ready to go and wanted to leave the new parents alone with their kids for a while. We went down with them to get our stuff out of Jillian’s car and figure out what we were going to do for the night. We had a show coming up and would have to leave in the morning so there was no point in driving all the way to Cameron and back. Jeff offered to put us up at the Hyatt if we could get a room. It was near the airport and we’d get a decent nights sleep before the show tomorrow, the last one we had before Wrestlemania XIX, in less than two weeks.
We got there, got a room and literally crashed. We almost didn’t get up in time for our plane we were so tired. It showed in our in-ring performance, Vince telling us to immediately go get some rest. He knew why we were tired, everyone knew about Jess and Amy having the kids the night before and that we had flown out there. Again we fell asleep, crashing on the couch of our hotel room and not even bothering to change. The things I do for family.

Wrestlemania XIX. Everything said about this event was true. It could make or break a career, a person. The literal SuperBowl of Sport Entertainment, and a proverbial three ring circus, WM was pretty damned sweet! Glenn was a bit pissed that his match with RVD was moved to Heat, but he calmed down after a bit.
I had a dark match with a new girl on the roster, Shane McMahon asked me to put her through a work out. Her name was Kelly Jordan but she called herself Pandora. Something about her looked benign, but all hell broke loose if you weren’t careful. She was pretty good, an aerialist but much more a technical wrestler. She got a hell of a lot of good moves in, working well on the left, and on the right when she had to. I didn’t have to job to her but gave her a decent run-through. JR and Shane-o-Mac were both talking to her when I came back out to watch Glenn’s match from behind the curtain.
What are the odds on her getting signed after another match? She’s good, and not plastic, which is the way Vince is getting his Divas now.
Glenn and his new tag partner Rob Szatkowski lost their match that night, they were up against Chief Morely, Lance Storm and the Dudleyz. It was alright with Rob, and Glenn was ok with it afterward. They both decided to cut out, and we were going to head for a Starbucks(this was Seattle, ya had to go to Starbucks!), when I spotted the new girl, Kelly. I asked if I could invite her and they both said it was fine, they would wait in the truck.
I finally convinced her to tag along and we all headed out. When Glenn and I decided to leave she and Rob were still deep in conversation. Rob didn’t even answer when we went to get him to head for the airport. We saw Peter Senercha, “Tazz”, in the lobby and he said Rob had left early with some blonde chick with blue streaks in her hair.
There goes the neighborhood. Ah…Spring…. Love is in the air.
Love and Baby powder.
