When she got back to the hotel she walked guiltily back across the lobby. She shouldn't even be here she thought as she all but punched the button for the elevator. I have a husband and he has a wife, what am I fucking doing?
She tapped her foot annoyingly as she waited for the elevator. Her cell buzzed yet again.
"Damn it Jordan" she said out loud as she jerked the thing out of her purse and shut it off violently.
The guy that had walked up beside her looked at her curiously. She looked up to apologize for her apparent rudeness and her jaw almost dropped.
"I'm sorry" he said in his eerily scratchy voice "did I just hear you say Jordan"
She laughed nervously "Yeah, he keeps calling me and I am supposed to be ignoring him," she blew her hair out of her face "well trying to that is"
He laughed "that sounds like Jordan alright," he said shaking his head "well if its the Jordan I know that is" he finished with a shrug.
"I think it is" she said with a nervous laugh that made him raise his eyebrows.
"Oh I am sorry, I am Joe" he said holding out his hand
"Hey Joe, I am Kristy" she said smiling back.
"Oh so you are the one I have heard so very much about" he said with a curious expression
She jerked her head up. "What?" she said in a shocked tone. He just looked at her with those crystal clear blue eyes. When he didn't respond after a moment longer she rephrase her question "What do you mean, you have heard so much about me?" Before he could answer the elevator dinged as the doors opened. They both looked at it curiously.
"Why don't we have a drink at the bar and we can fill each other in" Joe said with a gesture to the bustling lounge.
"Ok" she said with a shrug. She really couldn't believe this, how did Joe McIntyre know who she was. She walked into the elegant lounge behind him and became embarrassingly aware of the way she was dressed. Everyone around her looked like they were headed to a black tie event and here she was in blue jeans and a turtle neck. Joe pulled a padded club chair out for her like a gentleman and signaled a waiter over as he sat down.
"So" he said as he settled back "You are the woman that has given Jordan a new passion for life"
He grinned at her when she shot him a shocked and curious expression.
"I am not sure what you mean" she said taking out her cigarettes. She was trying desperately to make her hands quit shaking.
The waiter ambled over and they ordered drinks.
Joe just sat looking at her as they waited on their drinks. She guessed he was waiting for her to say something but for the life of her she couldn't figure out what to talk about. Hadn't she been in this situation before, why did this always happen to her.
The waiter returned with their order and Joe grinned at her over his glass as he drank as if deliberately making her sweat.
"wow, you are quite the conversationalist" she said sarcastically as she lit her cigarette.
"well, I was trying to make you respond to my earlier comment" he said still grinning
"What was I supposed to say to that exactly" she said with a sip of her drink "Yes, that’s me, I am the greatest thing in Jordan's life"
Joe laughed "man what sarcasm" he said with a flash of those piercing blue eyes.
God he was being a jerk. How was she supposed to have a normal conversation when he kept giving her shit like that to work with. Did the man have no social skills?
"what nice weather we are having" she said absently to break the silence as she stub out her cigarette in frustration.
Joe cocked an eyebrow. "I can see what he sees in you" he said with a grin
She choked on her drink and almost spit it across the table at him. Just what did he mean by that? He said it in such a tone that she didn't know if it was a good thing or a bad thing.
"are you ok" he said offering her a napkin
"yeah I am fine" she said frustrated wiping at her face. Damn why did she have to be such a dork.
"Ok listen, I don't know where this conversation is really going so why don't you just come out and say what you want to know about me" she said lighting another cigarette annoyingly
"wow, and she’s direct" he said with a gesture of his drink at her. He crossed his arms and leaned over the table in her direction "Listen I am not trying to give you a hard time, I am just trying to develop my own opinion of you" he finished with a gesture of his hand
"so what do you want to know" she said leaning back more relaxed now he was being more direct with her.
"well what do you think about all of this" he said gesturing around to their surroundings
"This?" she asked confused "the hotel accommodations or the five star treatment bit" she said on an exhale of smoke.
"Everything that comes with him" Joe said in a low tone.
The statement had rocked her to the core. She visibly jerked and wasn't sure just how to respond. She had often thought about it, hell, her life now was it but not completely. She thought about his wife and all of the fans.
"Well," she began tentatively with a big sip of her drink to steady her nerves "Its rough people knowing about you and every thing you do in your life" she paused "from Jordan's point of view anyway" when he cocked an eyebrow at her suspiously she continued "if you haven't been on the internet lately, I don't exist" she finished with a fake laugh.
"Don't exist?" Joe said in amusement "man this is a first for me" he laughed and finished his first drink.
"a first?" she asked confused
"Me having drinks with a woman that doesn't exist" Joe said in a cheers motion with his empty glass.
She laughed "people are suspious because I have been spotted at several shows but I don't understand why they just don't tell everyone the truth"
"Why didn't they tell “the truth“?" Joe asked curiously making a quotations gesture with his hands.
"well," she couldn't help but grin "the pictures were well" she paused with her drink glass to her lips "they were of us in really hard to explain situations"
"Like what?" he said leaning forward absolutely intrigued
"There were a couple of us coming out of the airport which wouldn't be hard to explain, but Jordan flipped his shit over the ones of us dancing together at a club, going back into the hotel that night and then leaving together next morning" she said as she took out another cigeratte.
"how did you manage to avoid explaining those?" Joe said with a laugh
"All of the pictures managed to be of the back of my head expect when we were leaving the hotel and then I had a hat and sun glasses on, so they just let the rumors fly" she said laughing with him
"Well that still doesn't tell me the excuse they gave about him being with you" he said with a cock eye brow
"Like I said before" she said taking another drink "I don't exist" she finished with a shrug.
"wow that really must be hard having to be so careful" he said reflectively "because I know from experience there is always someone watching you"
"Yeah well I don't know why it really matters because there is nothing going on between us, I just do his promtions" she said with a shrug
"What you have go to be kidding me" Joe said sitting up "You mean there is nothing going on" he said in an almost whisper
"well there was at first" she began with regret in her voice "but then I started this whole promotions thing and that was over"
"Over" Joe said in shock "things like that just aren't over"
"yeah well apparently to him they are" she said as her throat burned with the tears she could feel coming.
"Kristy, you have to be kidding me, the way he talks about you and what you do together I just thought that you were well I guess I thought you were pretty hot and heavy." he shrugged
"well, it would be news to me" she said shaking her head "We joke about it constantly and flirt like mad but thats as far as it really goes". She thought about the kiss they had shared that morning and wondered if she was being as transparent as she felt.
There was a long pause and the waiter came over with more drinks. A thought occured to her. This was her person to talk to, she didn't know him well of course but at least she could discuss the situation with someone.
"Man thats gotta suck" Joe said as he took the drink that was offered to him.
"Yeah well like you said, thats part of everything that comes with him" she paused for another sip "and I have no idea in hell what I am doing with him" she said to the bottom of her glass.
"what do you mean?" Joe said with concern
"Joe, let me just lay this out for you. I love him, pure and simple. I have just finally admitted that to myself and now I just don't know what in the hell I am going to do" she said as the tears filled her eyes
"Listen, have you tried talking to him" Joe said reaching across the table to grasp her hand
She laughed bitterly "yeah our talks are real productive" she said blowing her hair out of her face.
"and you know you love him" Joe said with real concern on his face
She leaned up and grasped his hand in return "Joe you have no idea how much" she said as one tear slid down her cheek
Joe caught a glimpse of her rings and furrowed his brows. "I hate to bring this up but aren't you married"
"yes" she said quickly as she glanced down at her own rings "my husband and I....well....to tell you the truth we haven't been in love for a long time now" she finished and had to resist the urge just to down her drink.
"God this is way more complicated than I thought" Joe said with a sigh
"Your telling me" Kristy huffed out.
There was a long pause as they sat drinking and taking in their surroundings. Finally Kristy couldn't take it anymore and finally asked the question that had been plaguing her the entire night.
"So how often has he done this" she asked flatly
Now it was his turn to almost choke on his drink. "What" he said amusingly wiping at his chin "What do you mean how often"
"Oh come on, the man could have anyone at the drop of a hat, so I want to know what number am I" she finished in the most nonchalant tone she could manage.
"Kristy, you are nuts to think that Jordan does this all the time" Joe said leaning over in concern "He is so shy, so drawn into himself its hard for anyone" he gestured around "let alone a complete stranger to get inside his head"
"and just how do you know I am inside his head" she asked mimicking his posture on the table
"its simple, you are all he talks about" Joe said leaning back confidently
She leaned back and sipped her drink as the information sunk into her head. What did this mean exactly? she wasn't sure. He didn't want her spreading information around about them, but him, he could tell who ever he pleased? What was that about?
"so tell me about him" she said lighting another cigeratte
"tell you about what?" Joe said curiously
"well you have known him for how long now, and I would like to know some details" she said with a grin
"oh you mean skeletons" Joe laughed "I am not going to call my man out like that"
"oh come on surely there is something you can tell me" she laughed
"Ok well..." Joe began telling her stories about their times on the road with NKOTB. The first ones were about all of the crazy stuff they used to do just to have fun but they slowly worked their way into fights and disagreement they used to have. They had worked their way through a good number of drinks and Kristy could feel her mind begin to settle with the increased alcohol. She kept loosing the thread of the conversation and had to focus hard on his blue eyes to even pay attention to what he was saying.
"And we thought that they..."
"were going to kick us out of the hotel" she heard someone finish the statement from behind her.
"Hey J, whats up we were just...." Joe trailed off when he saw the look Jordan was giving Kristy
"Why did you turn your phone off" Jordan said heatedly
Kristy stood up quickly, way too quickly and the room spun. She felt Jordan grab the back of her arm to keep her from falling over. She hastily jerked her arm out of his hand and glared back at him.
"I said I didn't want to talk to you any more" she raised her voice as Joe looked around nervously
"We need to talk" Jordan said grabbing her arm again
"No we don't" she said snatching her arm back
"Guys can we just sit down and be a little more quiet about this" Joe said through clenched teeth as he smiled around at the on lookers that were staring.
"No I think I am leaving" Kristy said with tears in her eyes as she pushed past Jordan to the elevators
"Kristy" Jordan called frustratedly after her
"Let her go man" Joe said with a hand on his arm "She's had a rough evening"
Jordan jerked around at him "why, what did she tell you" he said hastily
Joe laughed at his concern as he gestured to the chair that Kristy just vacated "she told me she doesn't exist"
Jordan sat down heavily with a reserved look "Joe I...." he began but then just couldn't find the words
"Listen man I know.." Joe said shaking his head "I know what its like to love someone and not want anyone to find out about it, believe me"
"Love?" Jordan said as he rested his head on his hands "I never said anything about love"
"Oh come on man you are kidding yourself and so is she" Joe said with a huge laugh "You too are so in love and its so obvious that I want to slap you both" he finished as the waiter walked up.
Joe order another drink and one for Jordan. When the waiter walked away Joe leaned up on the table and almost whispered "so are you being an idiot and not telling her how you really feel" he said questioningly
Jordan pushed back in his chair with an exhausted sigh "I try, I really do. I tried to tell her tonight and you see how this ended up" Jordan said throwing up his hands. "How does a married man tell a married woman that she is all he can think about?" he finally said as the waiter arrived with their drinks.
"Man I have no idea on that one" Joe said shaking his head "but from what I can tell she seems worth it"
Jordan paused at the revelation. Yeah she was, worth throwing it all away which he had almost done several times.
"Part of me knows that I can't do this anymore and the other part of me just doesn't want to rock the boat" Jordan said after a long drink. "I mean, we have the best friendship and she does wonderful promotions, so why on earth would I want to take a chance on messing all of that up" he finished in a ramble.
Joe sat in silence for awhile thinking about the situation. When he finally spoke he held Jordan's gaze "Listen there are only a few things in life that are as important as love and what ever is holding you back from her can't hold a candle to loosing her" he said as he stared him down.
Jordan looked away as the emotion filled his face "You don't understand" he said with a wave
"there you go again, closing down" Joe said frustratedly leaning back "I can see why you never get anywhere"
"Look you don't know what the fuck you are talking about" Jordan said as he voice grew louder
"All I know is that you are willing to throw her away just to stay in your safe little world" Joe said back to him matching his tone
Jordan sat back and couldn't stop the tears from sliding down his cheeks. Joe leaned in nervously "man I am sorry, please"
Jordan raised his hand "listen you can't understand how complicated this is" he said swiping at his wet cheeks "thanks for trying but please just stay out of it" he said pushing back from the table.
Joe just sat with his mouth open watching Jordan walk dejectedly off to the elevators.
