24.
After the tour, summer was on its way. Mark enjoyed spending as much time as he could with his heavily pregnant girlfriend. Like a true daddy-to-be he had painted and decorated a room in their home especially for their kid. He took Emma on trips to the beach, and on shopping sprees for the baby. Emma was in her final weeks and the warmth and her pregnancy were wearing her out, she was having a very hard time and went to bed early most of the nights. Mark had installed an air-conditioning system in his bedroom so she would be able to at least sleep well. And when Emma was sleeping, Mark crawled behind his piano and fine-tuned some of the songs he and Gaz had started writing. Some nights Howard would be over to help with the lyrics, and on the rare nights when Jason came home from the hospital he’d sometimes call Mark to ask if he was still up because he was having some inspiration.
It was a warm August summer night when Mark, Gary and Howard sat behind Mark’s piano working on a new song that Mark had started writing the previous night. They were playing around a little because they didn’t know what to do with the song. Mark laughed out loud when Gary started with the first two verses they had written and on the point where they got stuck would change it into on of their really old hits.
“You guys enjoying yourselves?” Emma stood in the living room suddenly, wearing a black sweat pants and a white cotton top that showed off her dangerously huge bump.
Mark stood up and kissed her, “I’m sorry did we wake you?”
“No, it’s ok.” She looked at him sweetly, her face flushed a little though.
“Honey,” she asked when he turned to fill up Gary’s glass with some more wine, “have you been drinking too?”
“Not much, why?” Mark replied, only half listening.
“Because I think it has started.”
“Started? What started…oh!” He turned around and the look of terror on his face had Howard and Gary in stitches behind the piano.
“Oh my God!” Mark yelped and started running around the house looking for all sorts of stuff they would need.
Emma looked at him and rolled her eyes a little, “This can take hours Mark, relax!”
“How do you know? Some mothers have babies in the back of their cars because they thought it would take hours! No baby of mine will be born here in the living room!”
Gary laughed even louder, Howard offered to drive, he had only just opened up his beer and hadn’t yet drank any.
Emma gladly accepted his offer and the three of them squeezed into Howard’s sports car as Gary promised he’d stay there and phone Dawn.

Howard felt a but useless at the maternity ward, it was quiet and most people were in the delivery rooms with their wives or girlfriends.
He wandered around the hospital a little when he thought of seeing if Jason was with Charlotte, he knew his friend would be with her at the weirdest hours of the day. Especially since the tour ended, Jason seemed to have moved into the hospital. He didn’t wanted to be separated from Charlotte if he didn’t need to be.
The small strip of light underneath her room, gave away somebody’s presence and Howard pushed open the door.
Jason’s silhouette was visible at the bedside, he was looking a bit scruffy, obviously hadn’t shaved in days and his eyes stared at Charlotte.
“Hey,” Howard said as he laid his hand on his shoulders.
“Hey,” Jason took a deep breath as if awakening and stretched his back.
“What are you doing here?” He asked when he suddenly realised it was about 11 in the evening.
“Emma went into labour while I was at Marks, I drove them,” he explained, “d’you want some tea?”
Jason nodded and Howard searched his pockets for some change to get them both a cuppa.
“Oh here,” he found the lyrics to the song they had just been writing on which he had stuffed in his pocket when they’d left in such a hurry, “maybe you can do something with it, we’re stuck.” Howard headed towards the vending machines in the corridor.
Jason took the paper and read the lyrics. Underneath Howard’s near handwriting of the lyrics, Gary had made some notes of some musical arrangements. Jason wasn’t trained to read music, but he understood this from experience. He took out his guitar which stood, as always, next to Charlotte’s bed. He often played for her.
He tried the chorus a few times and hummed along with the words a little, his mind trying to figure out how Gary had thought of the rhythm for the words.
“Sometimes we don’t know what we’re waiting for,
And that’s the time to be the first one on the dance floor,
We go from green to blue, to go to black
Breathe deep
Who knows how long this will last”
Howard had returned with their teas and silently listened to Jason’s soft guitar, it sounded a whole lot better all of a sudden.
Jason sang it again, his eyes closing now, his hands concentrating on the strings of his guitar.
“A little boy me went fishing in a wooden boat
Sitting there for hours in the cold
Patience is a virtue til we die
Then a ripple in the water caught my eye.”
“Jay,” Howard’s voice interrupted him. “Jay! Look at her!”
Howard had seen it happen before his eyes and it looked so natural that he forgot the importance of this moment.
Jason looked at Charlotte, two dark green eyes looked back at him. Studying his face intently.

Mark seemed more scared than Emma, even though for both of them this was new. When Gary had phoned Dawn to tell her Emma had gone into labour, Dawn had also gone to the hospital after dropping the kids off with Gary. She’d muttered something about “useless men” and Gary stayed at Mark’s house, popping some bottles of champagne in the fridge and cleaning up the mess they had made earlier.
Emma’s face had turned red, little beads of sweat pooled around her upper lip and on her forehead. The contractions were still too far apart and the obstetrician had said that it might take a few hours. Mark was a little scared and thought the baby would pop out any minute as she breathed through her contractions. Emma had sent him away on impossible journeys as his well meant concern drove her a little crazy, and right now he was running along the corridors of the hospital looking for ice cubes.
When Dawn came walking into the room, Emma sighed a little with relief. Having somebody around her that had been through this before made her a lot more comfortable, and when Mark arrived with the ice cubes he too was glad to see a woman of experience with his wife who knew how to calm him down a little.
“Mark,” Dawn said her eyes sparkling a little, “Tomorrow you will be a daddy, this will be one of the most beautiful moments of your life.”
Mark looked at Emma who beamed in her hospital bed and he took her hand in his, “I’m sure you will do brilliantly.”

She saw the bluest of eyes, vaguely recognising them. She heard voices dancing around her head but everything seemed to be surrounded by thick clouds. She heard but didn’t understand. She focused on the eyes, her vision sharpening by the second, she wanted to keep looking at the eyes but her brain wanted her to blink. She held back the urge to blink until tears welled up in her eyes, then slowly she closed her eye lids, afraid that what she just saw would be gone by the time she’d open them again. But they were still there when she opened again. A wave of emotions fell over her body, the sensation of seeing, hearing and feeling was overwhelming. She felt her hands move and brought them up to her face, turning them around, they looked familiar. A warm hand took one of her hands, she wanted to open her mouth but couldn’t, it was too hard so she just didn’t try it anymore. The warm hand in hers felt nice, it squeezed her a little and she squeezed back. She felt another hand on her cheek, her hair. A little light shone in her eyes and she blinked against the brightness. She tried to push it away, she wanted to see the blue eyes.
***
Jason had seen how her eyes changed from focusing to recognition, how her brain tried to take in all of the information it was suddenly receiving again. How she tried to open her mouth, not feeling the tube that was still helping her breath but reacting upon primal instincts. He literally saw her whole body come back to live again right before his eyes.
Howard had gone in search for a doctor and came back with not one, but three doctors that all gently pushed Jason out of the way to stare at the fragile body of Charlotte in the bed.
When she squeezed her eyes and lifted a weak hand to push away the little light one of the doctors used to check her reflexes, they all agreed that they needed to take her off the tube that was down her throat and get her on a normal breathing machine to see if she was completely responsive.
“Charlotte,” the doctor asked and her drowsy eyes tried to focus on his face. Her eyes were glazy with tears, he didn’t know if it was physical or if she was crying.
“I am going to take out the tube that is down your throat, it might be difficult to breathe for a little bit but we are here on stand by so don’t worry.” He tried to see if she understood but couldn’t read her face.
Jason looked at the other doctors who were setting up a new breathing machine, just in case.
“Ok,” said the first doctor, “Extubate her.”
***
“Emma,” the obstetrician smiled at the redheaded woman who was now desperately breathing more deeply and clung onto Mark’s hand for dear life, “when the next contraction starts, you can start pushing ok?”
Emma nodded, concentrated and focused she felt her maternal instinct take over and forgot about all the things that she had feared so much of the delivery.
Mark had calmed down thanks to Dawn and held her hand, while he whispered encouraging words to her ever so often.
Dawn silently retreated to the waiting room, this was their moment. She smiled as she remembered her own kids being born and couldn’t wait to get back home tonight and hold her precious babies in her arms.
Mark had never seen such strength in a woman, he had never believed that he would survive a childbirth, whenever he saw such things on TV he gladly flipped channels. But now that he saw his own child being born he knew all the stories Howard and Gary had told him were true. It really was amazing.
Now, his beautiful baby boy lay in his arms, bundled up in a blue blanket with an emotional mummy laying besides him. He kissed Emma on her head, kissed his son and whispered, “Hello Elwood Jack, I have been waiting for you for so long.”
***
Charlotte felt the pain when the tube was removed from her throat but it gave her a sense of being alive. She felt as if drunk, the world danced around her and the clouds still obstructed her vision and her mind. She heard more voices, but none of them sounded as soothing as that first voice she had heard.
A jolt of pain sliced through her chest when oxygen was cut of for a few seconds, a mask was placed over her head and the pain was gone. Faces around her disappeared and then the blue eyes were back. Suddenly, tears were there and she wanted to be closer to him, touch him, smell him but she was too tired she was just happy he was there. She licked her lips and tried to speak, but no sound came out. She swallowed and tried again, a hoarse shaking noise softer than she had wanted left her lips.
Jason heard her speak his name, and he closed his eyes. Tears of happiness travelled down his face, he buried his face into her sheets, his arms gently picking her up from the bed and he held her.
A few seconds later, he felt her arms around him too, trembling a little and moving uncertain but he could feel the life flowing through her body.

When Julia had discovered that Rob had come home in the middle of the night, totally out of it, she knew he had used something. He had fallen asleep on the couch, where he still lay snoring now, it was five in the morning and Julia had searched him looking for whatever it was he used. She knew enough when she found the silver wrapping in his jeans pocket. She’d tried to wake him up the moment she found it, shouted at him and then burst into tears right before his eyes but he was so far gone he didn’t even notice and slept on.
She sat in a chair across him, and looked at his sleeping body. His two day shade on his face, the tattoos on his arm, the deep set eyes. She loved him, she honestly did, but living with Robbie was hardly easy.
The sound of an incoming text message startled her, she rubbed her cold arms and scanned the room for her phone. It was on the coffee table, next to the silver wrapping she had been staring at all night long.
“Get to hospital asap. Charlie awake, Emma in labour, kiss H.”
It was Howard’s number.
In a hurry she grabbed her things and sniffed at Robbie, she had better things to do than wait for him to wake up from his cocaine trip.
***
All proud Mark showed his son to his mother who had also rushed to the hospital. It seemed almost like a little Take That reunion, Mark’s family was there, Dawn was still in the hospital after she’d heard the news about Charlotte she’d swapped places with Howard who in his turn told the news to Mark and updated Gary via the phone. Jason’s dad had appeared, and with him the paparazzi who seemed to have some informant on the inside who’d spilled the beans on Emma’s delivery.
Julia skidded to a halt in front of Charlotte’s room and saw Howard sitting on one of the benches outside her room. His head leaning on his hands, his face towards the ground. He looked tired and gorgeous at the same time. He was wearing a baggy black jeans, black All Stars and a grey shirt with a deep v-neck. His curly hair stood everywhere and he hadn’t shaved in at least a week.
“Hey,” she greeted him, smiling bravely because she didn’t want Howard to see that she felt not so much on top of the world today.
He looked up and smiled, his beautiful grey orbs smiling along with his mouth.
“Hey,” he stood up and reached out his arms, his hands landed on her upper arms and he gently kissed her on her cheek.
“How is she?” Julia had to swallow to not react to the electric shock that went through her arms when he’d touched her.
“She seems perfectly fine, a bit tired, shaken up, like she’s been drugged.”
Julia snickered, great that should be no problem then.
“Can I go in?” she asked.
“Dunno, Jason is still in there, doctors don’t want to overcrowd it there. But Jay needs a break anyway, get in there and kick him out I’ll get him some tea and when we get back I’ll take you up to Emma and Mark, alright?”
“Sure,” Julia nodded and walked in the room where a pale looking but smiling Charlotte awaited her.
They chatted a little and Jason and Howard left for a tea and a chat with Jason’s dad. Charlotte’s voice was still raw and soar, because of the tube that had been down her throat. Julia didn’t tell her anything about Robbie’s drug use, she didn’t wanted to burden her with problems, it wasn’t the right time now. This visit had already been emotional enough.
“Tired..” Charlotte croaked and raised her hand to Julia’s flushed face.
“Yeah, I’m knackered, ‘s been a long week, little sleep..you know.”
“I know,” Charlotte nodded and patted her on the cheek.
“Glad to have you back though.” Julia kissed her friend on the cheek made sure she was comfortable before giving up her spot beside the bed again to Jason.
Howard waited for her in the corridor and lead her to the other side of the hospital, to the maternity ward where Mark and Emma sat in their room which was filled to the brim with family and friends who’d all come out to see their baby. Elwood was as sweet as a rose and showed everybody what “sleeping like a baby” was, Mark was back to his energetic self after a quick nap and nearly hopped through the room. Taking pictures, laughing and saying hello to everyone. Julia quickly had enough from the crowded room and just wanted to go home. Visiting a baby shower with Howard was a little out of her comfort zone.
She quickly said hello to Emma and ensured her that Elwood was the prettiest baby she’d ever seen. Mark beamed at her and even asked her how Charlotte was.
Back out on the corridor, she sighed.
Howard looked at her. “That mustn’t have been easy, you and me cooing over someone else’s baby.”
She shrugged. “It’s ok How.”
“Hey,” he lowered his head a little to make better eye contact with her, “You ok?”
“Yeah, I’m just tired…I’ll be fine.” But contrary to what she wanted him to see, tears welled up in her eyes and she looked up trying to push them back.
“Jules, what’s wrong.”
“Nothing, nothing,” she wiped her eyes. “It’s all emotions I guess.” She laughed a little awkward and felt Howard’s hands upon her arms again. When he pulled her in for a hug, she didn’t even fight it, she just let it happen.
His strong arms enveloped her and she automatically rested her head against his chest. His smell, the familiar cigarette whiff combined with his perfume entered her nose and she took it in. She could feel his heart beat underneath his grey shirt and felt his pierced nipple graze her ear.
Feeling the unsteadiness in her legs, she pulled herself out of the hug.
“I really need to get going..” but her voice was weak as if she only said it because she had to.
She remembered their first kiss, his soft touches that first and only night. How he’d softly discovered the inside of her mouth with his tongue, how she’d traced the muscles in his arm and how his muscles had contracted when after hours of teasing they’d reached ecstasy.
Her stomach twitched and she knew she needed to leave immediately.
Reluctantly, Howard let go of her. He was confused by her body language. Did she want this or not? He knew she shouldn’t want this.
Julia smiled at him and then broke their hug, said a soft goodbye and then turned around and left, biting her lip.
***
“Jay, you need sleep.” Charlotte had already grown accustomed to the fact that she couldn’t speak too long sentences, so most things she said sounded like orders.
“I know sweetie, but I don’t wanna go home just yet. I wanna be with you.”
She smiled and took his hand.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Jason bent towards her and gently kissed her cheek. His warm skin against hers felt good, his lips lingered around her ear for a second.
“I missed this,” he said, cuddling her some more. Feeling her thin shaped body beneath the blankets, she’d dropped an awful lot of weight and was looking all skin and bones but Jason didn’t care about how she looked as long as she was with him.
Charlotte’s hands found his face, her fingertips scanned his features gently, like a blind person trying to figure what somebody looked like. Then she twirled her finger in his hair.
“It’s long,” she decided.
“Yeah, it needs a cut,” Jason answered, shyly pushing his hair from his eyes.
She sighed, “I know you so well,” she needed to pause for a second and gather her breath, Jason squeezed her hand in an encouraging kind of way.
“Yet, it’s like you’re a new person to me.” She hoped he understood, it was hard when you’re not able to tell everything you want. Jason saw her frustrated expression, he knew what she meant. She’d missed almost half a year of his life. Bits and pieces here and there were missing from her memory, he’d already noticed that. Nothing abnormal the doctors had told him, her short term memory was perfectly fine, it was the details to some events that were missing. Small pieces, tiny files of information but still it was very frightening for Charlotte to discover she didn’t remember some things.
“We’ll have all the time in the world to discover all those things lost.”
Charlotte looked at his eyes, sparkling brightly at her.
“Those eyes,” she smiled, “gorgeous.” With that, she kissed his lips, butterflies doing summersaults in her stomach.

Julia had locked herself in the bathroom, sitting on the toilet she blew her nose for the fifth time that minute and tried to dry her eyes again.
She’d gotten into a huge fight with Robbie when she came home. She was so worried for him and yet she was so incredibly mad at him for using that stuff again, she had tried to understand his addictions, tried to understand how to handle that. But she still found it difficult. For some reason, drugs seemed far more dangerous to her and it also turned Rob into someone completely different. When he’d been drinking he was just an over exaggerated version of himself, when he’d used drugs he seemed to shut down and go into a sort of sleep modus only to lash out at any given moment when he didn’t like something or felt uncomfortable.
The aftermath of his trips was the worst part, he’d be too tired to lift a finger and felt like shit. That would usually also be the reason why he’d use the stuff again, to feel less bad.
Right in the middle of this, Julia had come home and had immediately confronted him with what she had found. He had not really reacted to her, which had infuriated her even more and in the end they had both started shouting at each other.
“It has got to stop Robbie, or else I’m out!” she had screamed at him and she had left to cry her eyes out. She cried from frustration and anger with herself for not being able to handle this less selfish.
She’d heard him curse in the living room, then she heard the shower in the second bathroom upstairs and a few minutes later she heard his soft voice through the door.
“Jules, I’m sorry.”
“For what…” she sniffed.
“For…being a prat, for being not strong enough for being….stupid.”
She opened the door, Robbie sat on the floor across the bathroom door, his back against the wall, his legs curled underneath him. His was wearing his jeans only, his wet hair stood everywhere and little drops of water still glided from the back of his neck to his shoulders.
She looked at him, all innocent and submissive he looked back with his best puppy eyed look.
“Don’t,” she said and he knew she meant it. Julia closed the door behind her and also sat down on the floor. That’s how they sat, on the floor facing each other.
“I know you’re right,” Robbie said, his fingers automatically tracing his pockets for cigarettes, he didn’t find any.
“But it’s just so hard and it’s so damn frustrating to be told all those things that you just said when I know it already.”
“Why don’t you act on it then?” Julia replied calmly.
“I dunno,” and he really didn’t know, “Come here,” he said and he opened his arms. She crawled towards him and he cradled her.
“I’m sorry I yelled at you,” she said, kissing his arms.
“You had every right to yell at me. I’m sorry too.”
“Good,” Julia sniggered and Robbie knew that all was well now.
He kissed her neck, tasted the saltiness of her skin. She closed her eyes, enjoying the moment and threw her head back.
“Gods, you’re so sexy,” Robbie’s low voice tingled against her skin and she turned in his arms able to see his face.
“Stop the talking, Rob.”
He complied and his lips found hers and he claimed her mouth with his tongue. Keeping his lips firmly on hers, he tugged at her small top. Breaking of the kiss so he could undress her was almost unbearable but hearing their own fast breaths only made them want each other more.
Almost ripping off her clothes so he could feel her skin, he pushed her towards the floor and pinned her arms above her head. Her breath was ragged and he admired the fast rising and falling of her now exposed chest. His tongue followed the path that led down her neck, in between her breasts and then he closed his mouth around one of her nipples. She gasped and pushed her chest upwards, urging him to continue what he was doing. But he lowered his head more and kissed her stomach letting go of her arms, kissed her bellybutton and after what seemed ages she felt his warm breath upon her most aching spot. She bucked her body against him and wanted him right there and then, she didn’t want to loose any time by going to the bedroom or finding a more comfortable spot.
She fumbled with his jeans and already felt he was as ready as she was. When his jeans and pants finally lay thrown across the hall, she pulled him on top of her.
“Now, Rob, I need you now,” she gasped in his ear.
He kept looking at her when she opened her legs, inviting him and he entered her. Her eyes fluttered shut with enjoyment.
“Look at me,” he whispered hoarse, slowly moving, she looked at him his face close to her face, their sweaty chests sticking together, her legs wrapped around his waist welcoming his every move.
He knew she was close when her legs started to tremble and the muscles in her legs contracted. She was having a hard time keeping her eyes open. He moved faster and whispered her name in her ear. Seconds later, they both fell of the edge in united bliss.
Slightly shaky, Julia stood up from the floor, her muscles and bones achy.
Robbie held her hand as they both headed towards the bathroom, reprising their make up routine in the shower.
“I need to get back on that rehab programme,” he told her while he rested against the cold tiles in the shower.
“Good for you,” Julia smiled wrapping her arms around him again and nibbling at his chin.
“I’m talking about the programme in LA,” he said.
Julia looked at him, felt the warm water cascade down her back and saw Howard’s face in front of her for a split second.
“Wherever you go, I go.” She whispered and pulled him close for more kisses.
