Lenny lay face down on the bed in her office, sobbing. She hoped that the sound was muffled by one of the pillows she had buried her face in. She didn’t want to ruin anyone’s Christmas further.
There was a gentle knock on the door, and so Helena froze. She knew it wasn’t one of the boys. They never knocked, they just waked right in. Her muscles stiffened as the door opened and April stepped in.
“April, I am so--,” she lifted her head.
All the anger seeped out of the older woman. One look at that miserable, tear streaked face and she knew she couldn’t yell. She couldn’t even ask any questions about it. This was between Lenny and her son, and she couldn’t fix it for either of them.
“Shhh,” she hushed the girl.
“I didn’t mean to ruin Christmas.” Lenny whimpered. April nodded and knelt down next to the bed, brushing a kiss on her forehead.
“Just lay here.” She commanding, going to the bathroom and returning with wet washcloths. April sat on the edge of the bed and wiped off the hot little face she had come to love so well.
“You tried so hard to make it a good Christmas too, and here I went and ruined it.” Lenny sighed, blinking her eyes warily. Slowly, the blonde woman shook her head.
“You didn’t ruin anything. Bam should never have asked you such a personal question like that on a day like today. He just got so caught up in all his planning that he didn’t take you into account.” She s sighed. It was typical of her youngest son.
“We never discussed getting married. April, I couldn’t say yes. Not without talking about it. I mean, what if I want to quit writing and go back to college? What if I want to move out of Pennsylvania and go work in—I don’t know, Africa teaching kids?”
“You’re right.” It soothed Lenny just a bit to hear the words said, and she sniffled only a tiny bit. “These were things that should have been discussed before he asked you.”
“Oh April,” Lenny curled in close to the motherly arms. “I’ve made such a mess of everything. He’s never going to forgive me, and I don’t know what I’ll do. I love him April, I really do. I wouldn’t have stayed if I didn’t.”
“I know, honey, I know.” April patted her back. She bit her lip. Somehow, this just had to work out.

Bam came back several hours later, when Phil was awake and had heard about everything. He was sitting in the kitchen, drinking his coffee when his younger son came in.
“Hey Bam,” was all he said. Bam waited.
“Well?” he asked.
“What?” the large man looked up from his coffee and pointed towards the pot. Bam stepped towards it and poured himself out a cup.
“Aren’t you going to yell at me? Scream? Shout? Get mad at me for ruining Christmas?” He sat down at the island next to his father. Phil shook his head slowly.
“Nope,” he took another mouthful.
It was then, sitting next to his father’s warm comforting presence that Bam allowed himself the luxury of crying. He put his head down on top of his arms and silently cried.
“She’s still here Bam, really.”
“I ruined it, Dad. I can’t believe it. I ruined everything I had with her. She’s the best thing that ever happened to me, I ruined it.” He lifted his head. Phil shook his head and cupped the back of his son’s head.
“It isn’t ruined, Bam. She’s waiting for you to talk to her. All you have to do is go upstairs.”
“Are you sure?” those blue eyes were swimming with fear. Phil nodded.
“Go and get your girl,” and his son obeyed, leaving a cooling cup of coffee as the only proof that he had been there to begin with.

She was still in her office, curled up on the bed, still wearing that big t-shirt. Bam opened the door and stepped in. Lenny sat up, looking stricken. In three steps, her boyfriend crossed the room and pulled her into his arms.
They pressed tear soaked cheeks together and basked in the glory of having one another. Bam kissed her temple.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I never should have done that. Not until you’re ready, Lenny.”
Downstairs, Phil and April similarly had their arms around each other, cheeks pressed together.
And outside, a light snow began to fall.
