Mika was so frazzled by her friends surrounding her with tight cuddles that she almost fell onto Ruki when he finally pulled her out of the circle. She just really couldn't help but blush even more when he said that he was drawn to her. She lowered her head but kept smiling as Ruki hugged her tightly. Mika felt quite light-headed as she wrapped her arms around his body - Ruki himself was actually holding her ... and she was now his girlfriend ... how cool was that! As the guys made their congratulations, Kira, Kikyo and Ai did the same. Megumi giggled as she watched them before listening to Kai's reply to what she said before. She noticed he really did care a lot about their connection with the fans - they were what drove them as a band. When Kai jumped from hearing the guys start singing, Megumi did as well - it had really come out of nowhere.
"Well I certainly agree to seeing you guys practice more. If it will mean that you stop singing; it sounds like your sick ... or drunk ... or both", Megumi said jokingly to them as she held her hand over her heart from being surprised and she followed them back to the stage, "I think it'd be good to hear something a little more fast-paced this time too. Like 'Cockroach' or 'Regret'."
Megumi smiled back at Kikyo seeing she was walking behind her with Uruha - Kikyo smiled and gave a thumbs up in agreement with her song choices. Mika was practically skipping along beside Ruki as she followed him back to his mic-stand. However she instantly froze when he turned around and kissed her softly. Mika couldn't stop the childish little giggle that escaped her mouth as she plopped down on the platform in front of him.
"Uh-um ... I don't know what I'd like to hear next ... although I agree with Megumi, maybe 'Cockroach' again. Oh wait, what about 'Linda'?" Mika thought out loud as she willed herself to stop blushing before perking up at thinking of their famous song 'Linda', "I know you play that song at practically every Live but I think it's the best song ever~! I never get sick of hearing it".
Ai laughed as Mika looked excited and clapped like a little kid. Even though Mika was twenty-one, she didn't think it gave her an excuse to act adult-like. Even Ai didn't always act adult-like, and she was the oldest. Ai smiled as she again sat down and watched Aoi adjust the strap on his guitar. She was always in awe at how fast Aoi, Uruha and Reita could play - she sometimes got dizzy just trying to follow their hands.
"Aoi-san, it must have taken a lot of practice playing guitar before you got this good. I admire Kikyo for being able to play guitar but I don't think I'd ever be fast enough", Ai said with a little laugh while looking from Aoi to Uruha and then to Reita as he slid his fingers up and down the finger board, "I think maybe it's a good thing my main hobby isn't playing music because I'd probably scare people away".
Kikyo heard her and giggled - Ai once tried to play her acoustic guitar but it came out sounding all twisted and no real tune to it at all. That's why Ai was more into hair styling than playing music. Even Kira laughed before going back to staring at Reita's bass as he tuned it again. Kira was more interested in Fashion than playing music too. Mika was happy doing child-care and playing tunes with Kikyo for the kids. Megumi of course loved her cooking.
"Well we are all good at the things we love, I think. It's just like doing a job you hate - you don't put any passion into it and you end up miserable", Kira said as she looked thoughtfully up at the ceiling of the main hall, clasping her hands around her knees and tapping her feet randomly, "Kikyo likes music, Ai you like doing hair and stuff. Megumi your into cooking and Mika you like working with children. One day we'll all get to do what we love".
Mika, Ai, Megumi and Kikyo raised their eyebrows at Kira's speech full of wisdom - since when had Kira become so deep within her thoughts? Sure they all really wanted to focus in pursuing their future dream careers. Kira was right that Mika liked working with children but she wasn't going to do that forever. Secretly she wanted to be in Publicity and work for a top magazine but she was still in the middle of researching it.
"Well anyway, yes we will one day be career women but for the time being lets hear some cool music~! I vote that you guys play 'Cockroach' or 'Linda'," Kikyo said heartily, raising one arm like she was sitting in a classroom and answering a question which made the other girls laugh, "Come on we need some entertainment after all the troubles this morning. The Gazette music will make it all better~!"
Ai, Kira, Mika and Megumi clapped and cried 'Yeah~!' just as enthusiastically as Kikyo had called for it. Even they thought the guys would love to rock out and relieve the stresses that followed the newspaper report. And of course the more time spent with the guys, the better - especially for Mika. But they were definitely interested in hearing their radio gig later that afternoon because the girls read about it during the week on the Fan club website. Of course it didn't say what they would be talking about but the girls had a vague idea - either about the events that day or possibly about a new single. Whatever it was they couldn't wait to listen. In the meantime the girls just wanted to listen to them play more music. Who knows when they would get the chance to see them practice again, what with their next tour only just over two weeks away.
* * *
The guys were amused as the girls determined, or rather debated, about what song they wanted to hear next. It was pretty much only a choice of 'Cockroach' or 'Linda' by the sound of it. While Ruki went back to remove his white jacket again, he couldn't help but give a small smile at Mika's giggle when he kissed her - he really did think it was cute, but he wasn't going to say it in front of his band mates. Aoi heard Ai mention he must have practiced for a long time and he nodded with a smile as he played out a few random notes. Uruha and Reita glanced up at Kira as she spoke about pursuing your dream job. Of course it wasn't exactly words of wisdom because it's like a natural instinct to find your perfect career, but she really did have a point - after all, if they weren't in the band, they'd probably be doing something completely different. The girls wouldn't know each other and of course the guys would never have met them.
"Well, I think that's a very wise notion, Kira-san. Anyone who believe in themselves and can focus on reaching their dreams will certainly make the most out of life", Kai added as he grinned over his drum-kit at Kira before removing his white jacket and white scarf, letting them slip to the floor around his stool, "I mean I hate to make it sound like I'm boasting but take a look out our band. Each one of us wanted to be something else ..."
Aoi, Reita, Ruki and Uruha listened to Kai but then started laughing when he brought up their alternative career choices. They remembered doing an interview some years ago for an issue of 'Shoxx' magazine. It involved the question 'what would you be doing if you weren't in music?' Of course the answers would probably be different these days because they've been working with music for so many years.
"I'll second that. How many years ago is it now, two or three? The interview we did; one question was what our alternative careers would be if it wasn't for music", Aoi said with a laugh, which attracted nervous laughs from the other guys as Aoi pointed around to each of them, "Reita, you wanted to be a Candy maker, Kai naturally said a restaurant, Uruha you said a gamer and Ruki ... a general store? Come on~!"
Reita and Uruha laughed at Ruki as he hung his head and turned away in embarrassment. Well, like Aoi said, it was a few years ago and what else would he have said at the time? Preferences change, hence they were all in a band. But then Kai defended Ruki and brought up that Aoi said he would have been a carpenter, which made Aoi shut his mouth. Ruki held a thumbs up to Kai as a thank-you.
"Either way, I'm glad we're here. Even with all the troubles we had along the road, I don't think I'd change anything because then nothing would be the same", Ruki added as he thoughtfully scratched his head underneath the dreadlocks while he took the microphone from it's stand, "Now can we get started already? We talk much more and it'll be time to go. Lets do 'Cockroach'."
The other guys looked around at each other and smiled; good choice to make the girls happy. But before the song could start Uruha quickly discarded his shirt so he only had his grey singlet - he knew he would be sweating by the end of the song. Kai didn't even waste time; he straightaway counted two beats. Aoi, Reita and Uruha joined in for the last two beats as Ruki said 'Trash Man' into his microphone. Aoi and Kai continued the opening before Reita and Uruha joined in again - that's when Ruki started getting a little over excited and started half-jumping/half-dancing around the stage between his platform, where Mika sat, and Kai's drums. Okay it was only a practice but the exercise was good. Even Aoi and Uruha joined in with a little dancing, Reita just bopped his head along to the music and Kai was having fun at the back bashing away at his drums.
----------
True to the bands nature, they didn't hold anything back during the practice of 'Cockroach' even if it was just practice. After all that was the whole point of it and 'Cockroach' wasn't exactly a song you can stand still while listening to. By the time the song was finishing, the guys really wished the fans were turned on - each of them were sweating a little from the forehead with strands of hair stuck to their faces. Ruki's dreadlocks hadn't fallen out this time though, even with their round of bead-bangs in the middle of the song. Once again, a little something entertaining for the girls to laugh at. He even had to resist the urge to pull Mika up from where she was sitting to dance with her - but he didn't want to scare her so soon when he'd just told her he liked her. As the song made its sudden stop Ruki threw his head back and gave one last growl into his mic like he always did. Which happened to always send chills up people's spines. Kai rattled the crash cymbals with his drumsticks a few more times before whacking them hard on the tom's to finish.
"Saa, no matter how many times we play that song, it always brings on the exhaustion. But I have to say, it's good for a work-out ..." Reita joked as he stretched his arms over his head, then turning his head when he heard some odd sounds coming from around the edge of the extended stage, "Oh hey, check it out. It must be lunchtime; they're bringing the food out. Good timing, I'm starved~!"
And just like Reita said, a staff member was pushing a fairly large metal food trolley around the stage to where the stairs were. It had two large food plates - one with fried noodles, the other had half scrambled eggs and half stir-fried vegetables. Between the large food plates sat two small piles of plates, most likely for the guys and girls. Uruha set his guitar down and jumped onto the extended stage to take a closer look.
"Aww looks good~! We haven't eaten since breakfast, and practicing really works up an appetite. Arigatou for bringing this out for us", Uruha said to the staff member as he crouched down at the top of the stairs to look at the plates before glancing back at Kai, "Oh hey Kai, it's noddles, eggs and fried vegetables. Didn't you make something like this for us once before?"
The staff member gave a little bow to the group before he re-traced his steps and went back to the function room from the after party. Kai climbed out from behind his drum kit and ran over to where Uruha was - Kai realised he had made something like it before. He'd given the recipe to one of the chefs that worked in the cafeteria of the PS Company building; so that particular chef much have gone to the trouble of cooking them some lunch. Kai made a mental note to thank him later. Aoi removed his guitar and set it down on the mic-stand hook before taking Ai's hand and guiding her over. Reita set his bass down too in its cradle before gesturing for Kira to follow him. Kai and Uruha both walked down the stairs to the trolley, then turned back and called for Megumi and Kikyo to join them. Ruki then replaced his microphone before taking both of Mika's hands and helping her up.
* * *
The girls couldn't have been even more excited when Ruki decided on 'Cockroach' than if it was at a real Live. Mika squealed, clapped her hands and stamped her feet excited. Ai, Kira, Megumi and Kikyo laughed at her and Mika blushed from embarrassment. During the start of the song Megumi climbed back over Kai's platform and dodged Ruki's dancing so she could pull Mika up off her spot. Ai, Kira and Kikyo got up and ran over to join them. They all danced around the extended stage enthusiastically until Ruki started singing, so Mika watched her new boyfriend of ten minutes - yep, she was actually counting how long they were together already. Kikyo could help but steal glances at Uruha while he played - she actually liked his hair flat. Even Ai smiled as she danced and watched Aoi play - he was definitely Rhythm guitar for a reason. Kira giggled as she watched Reita bopping his head along to the music and thought it was just not 'tough-guy'. And Megumi again thought it was cute how Kai was always smiling while playing his drums.
"Megumi I can see you, stop drooling over Kai-san. You'll make him loose his concentration ..." Kira had to lean over and say into Megumi ear, which resulted in Megumi sticking her tongue out in defence as Kira laughed and continued, "Well Meg, if Mika got Ruki's attention why don't you get to know Kai-san? You both have a lot in common after all and you also can't stop looking at him -ah~!"
Kira flinched when Megumi swatted her shoulder with both hands consecutively. Ai, Mika and Kikyo giggled as Kira gave a fake pout and rubbed her arm. Megumi pulled the corner of her eye down and stuck her tongue out at Kira before going back to dancing. The girls knew she was joking around but they'd definitely hit a soft spot for her fondness with Kai. Then as the song finished, the girls clapped and cheered excitedly.
"Best song ever~! I don't know how many cover songs of heard of 'Cockroach' played by other bands but it's always the original that sounds the best", Megumi called over the clapping of her friends and she smiled as Reita stretched his arms and back from exhaustion, "Well I guess your really right about that. Even we felt tired after you played that song last week, and we were only dancing in the audience ..."
Just then the girls perked up when they heard the noises Reita mentioned and turned around too. Wow, not only had they had dinner with the guys last week but now they were invited to have lunch as well? It was every girls dream come true. Ai blushed when Aoi took her hand and led her over to the stairs, while Kira skipped along behind Reita as he walked past. Megumi and Kikyo quickly ran over and down the stairs to stand with Kai and Uruha.
"Oh my gosh, it looks so good and smells good too~! The only kind of real home cooking I have is Okaasan; I'm still learning from her too", Kikyo said as she stared bug-eyed at the plates of noodles, eggs and vegetables before glancing up at Kai, "So did you really make this once? Wow, so we get a first hand taste of Kai-san's cooking~! I remember in the 'Nameless Liberty' bonus footage you made French toast".
Megumi said Kikyo's name harshly under her breath and nudged her in the ribs before smiling nicely to Kai. Ai and Kira giggled at the two as they followed Aoi and Reita down the stairs. Mika just felt like she was floating as Ruki pulled her up from the little platform. Yes it probably sounded really childish but even though they weren't alone, Mika felt like he was the only person in the hall. She was now cuddling his arm as she walked with him to the stairs - which to her was quite nice considering his black satin shirt had no sleeves so his arms were bare.
"Ne, Ruki-kun ... oh do you mind me calling you that? I don't mean to sound needy or anything but will I get to see you before the band goes on Tour at the end of the month?" Mika said quietly while leaning her head on his shoulder and hoping that she wasn't nagging him, "I mean it's okay if your too busy because you've got a lot of work but I just thought I would ask and see if you have time ... um yeah ..."
Mika turned her head away and slapped a palm to her forehead - to her it sounded like she was trying to make Ruki feel guilty about telling her his feelings. And right before the band was to go on tour, which wasn't her intention. Anyway she turned back and gave a little smile to Ruki before smiling down at the plates of food. Her and the other girls always thought it was really cool how Kai always looked after the band - even making snacks during tours.
"Ah this looks so good, lets eat~! I was just thinking too, how cool it would be if we got to try some of your cooking Kai-san~! You would make an awesome Chef~!" Ai said a little too enthusiastically which made Megumi blush furiously until she got nudged by Kikyo to calm down; Ai went on, "Megumi has made tons of meals for all of us so I think she'd make a great Chef too".
Megumi just looked at Ai as if to say 'Gee thanks' but she liked Ai's compliment. She has made numerous meals for the whole group when they've visited or stayed over. It was her dream to run a café or teahouse in Tokyo; she just needed to get a bit of help on the business side of it. Kira's parents would be a great help seeing they have their own restaurant chain in America - but it was just a case of cornering them when they weren't over-seas, as Kira put it. However in the meantime, the girls were looking forward to the lunch that was brought out for them and the guys. And it was Kai's own recipe too. Even if it was just basic cuisine it certainly looked good. The girls didn't actually reach for the plates just yet, they wanted to wait until the guys were ready; it was only good manners. By the looks of it, Kai was more than willing to serve up their lunch.
* * *
Kai laughed at how enthusiastic Kikyo was about his cooking - or rather, the Chef's cooking with his recipe. He nodded with a smile when she asked if he really made it. He then gave an embarrassed laugh when Kikyo brought up the 'French toast' he'd made for the rest of the band on their last tour. Really it was just something to ease the minds of the band and the staff because there were problems with the stage equipment. Uruha came up behind Kikyo and looked over her shoulder at the plates; a hungry look in his eye. Aoi and Reita jumped down to stand on the other side of the trolley as they leaned over to smell - they couldn't wait to dig in. Finally Ruki came down last with Mika attached to his bare arm, but not in a way that she was pulling on it. He listened to her speak softly about when she'd see him again and he smiled to her reassuringly.
"It's okay, you don't even have to call me Ruki-kun. Just Ruki is fine; I'm not one for formalities among friends. Just ask these guys, they'll tell you what I'm really like", Ruki said as he pointed around to Uruha, Kai, Aoi and Reita who glanced up with questioning looks having not heard what he just said, "But anyway, I'm sure you know about Kai's LiveCast radio gig on the 20th right? Well we're meeting for coffee after he's finish so why don't you and your friends see if you can join us?"
Kai's Premium Radio was scheduled for two nights every month and on the odd occasion - usually one of the two gigs - he had guest appearances from one of the other guys. His last gig was on the 6th just after the One Night Stand Live and Aoi had been with him. Then it turned into a monthly ritual for the whole band to meet up after Kai's radio and have a relaxing coffee. Uruha glanced up when he heard Ruki mention the girls join them.
"Hey that sounds like fun. And anyway, because it's kind of late when Kai finishes, the tea house we always go too stays open late just for us because we always go there now", Uruha explained as he slowly scratched his head thoughtfully and then placed a hand to chin as he looked at Kai, "Your still doing your show right? Think the lady at the tea house would mind if the girls come in too?"
Kai stopped in the middle of serving up the noddles and shrugged with a little nod. He didn't think the lady owner of the teahouse would mind, after all it would mean more business for her. And as Uruha said she was only open at that hour twice a month just for them. Aoi and Reita didn't think she would mind - she was always eager to see the guys when they came in. Kai then went back to serving up the little plates with noodles before looking up at everyone.
"The Ocha Tea house isn't actually very far from the PSC building, it's just a few blocks away. I will give you the address later once we've eaten ..." Kai said to the girls as he began to hand the plates of noodles around, starting with Aoi and Ai, then Reita and Kira before he paused to point at the bassist, "Now Reita, I know you don't like vegetables but please try ... once in a while doesn't hurt".
Ruki, Aoi and Uruha snickered to themselves, as Reita made the kind of face a young boy would make to his mother - the 'I don't want too' face. As Kai went back to serving the noodles, Aoi began to pick pieces of vegetables and egg with a pair of chopsticks that were laid out. Reita of course took some egg pieces but hesitated as he took a couple of beans, carrots, cucumber and capsicum with his own chopsticks. Kai gave a little laugh as Reita looked up.
"What, I took some damn vegetables. I don't see the big deal; I mean I'm healthy enough. I eat well and work out every day. Is it so bad that I don't like vegetables that much?" Reita grumbled like a kid as he raised both eyebrows challengingly at Kai before glancing around to the girls, "Aside from the fact the Kai is always pushing bloody vegetables at us, he is a good cook. Very domestic ..."
Aoi snorted in the middle of a mouthful of food so he had to turn away in case he spat it out by accident. He'd never heard Reita say the word 'domestic' before. But regardless Kai just had a 'gee thanks' look as he now handed plates out to Megumi, Uruha and Kikyo. Lastly he fixed up two for Ruki and Mika seeing they were still on the stairs, then finally one for him. Aoi spoke up as Uruha and Ruki stepped up to take some eggs and vegetables.
"We can all cook but Kai is the one that tries the hardest as you probably already know. So please ignore Reita's complaining, we think Kai is the best cook amongst the band", Aoi said, defending poor Kai now that he'd finished the mouthful he almost spat out and he nudged Reita to be nice, "Anyway after our 'Decomp Tour' you should all come over and see for yourself. Maybe join us for dinner some time ..."
Kai looked bug-eyed at Aoi - not out of dislike for the idea but simply because they had been asking for his permission for everything over the past week! First he had to ask their manager if the girls could watch them practice, then he had to face their manager AGAIN but this time about the newspaper, then he was asked if the teahouse lady would mind if the girls joined them and now this? How had he suddenly turned into the parent while the other guys were his children? Kai just smiled and shook his head as he began to pick eggs and vegetables with his own chopsticks. He could tell the girls would love that idea so he couldn't get out of it. One excuse to really go crazy with cooking was Reita's birthday after the tour. He had a feeling Reita wouldn't want a big party seeing it was almost right after the tour final but he had yet to discuss it with Aoi, Ruki and Uruha. And his other feeling was that the girls would certainly love to wish him a Happy Birthday.

NOTES>
1) The guys 'Congrats' song: Just try to imagine a Congratulatory song in Japanese sung as if they're tone-deaf
2) If it weren't for music: The interview where they were asked what they'd be doing if not in music was done years ago so they're answers may have changed but at the time those were the answers the guys gave. They are all very amusing answers
3) Reita and his veggies: Aparently he doesn't like them very much but it can't be confirmed. However it was funny to include it in the story
4) Domestic?: No I can't imagine Reita saying that either but again, it sounded funny
