“Is there anything you need while I’m out?” Die questioned Kyo, returning to the bedroom to claim his wallet from the dresser top. The boy was curled back up on the bed after eating his mid-morning snack, looking drowsy. Instead of making the smaller male accompany him to the store, Die was just going to go while the boy caught a nap. Mayu and her kittens needed more food, so it really couldn’t be put off for much longer.
“No… I’ll be fine here.” Kyo gave a yawn and curled up on the bed more. Kyo smiled as Mayu hopped up on the bed as a few of her kittens managed to climb up using their claws. She lay down next to Kyo and her kittens were crawling over him, making the boy smiled before settling back in the bed. “I’ll see you when you get back.” He said before he gave another yawn.
“I’ll hurry back,” Die promised, tugging his keys from his pocket. He bent and kissed the other redhead, rubbing a loving hand on the curve of the boy’s pregnant stomach before leaving. Die locked up behind him when he left and headed out to the car. For once, he switched on the radio, simply to fill the void with Kyo still in the house.
As Kyo started to drift to sleep, his cell phone went off. Yawning, he reached out to the night stand and flipped it open. His eyes didn’t catch the number very well as he pressed the talk button. “Hello?” He asked, his voice thick with sleep as he sighed, straightening up to sit and stretch his arms.
“Tooru,” the voice was clipped and rough. “How long do you plan to stay gone? How long do you think you’re going to be able to stay away from your mother and me?” The male on the line made an impatient sound. “Boy, don’t be rude; answer me when I’m talking to you.” That was straight to the point.
“I… I’m not coming home. I’m staying with Die.” Kyo’s voice was small as he gripped the phone tight. Did his father not know about the restraining order on them? “If you don’t leave me alone, I’m going to call the cops… You’re violating the restraining order.” He tried his best to sound firm and confident, but it wasn’t working.
“Call the cops, Tooru. Go on—you’re shacked up with some grown man,” Kyo’s father called the bluff. “The cops will take you straight out of there. Maybe they’ll give you back to us or maybe they’ll put you in foster care. Maybe they’ll put you in some sort of institute; you obviously need the help—you can’t keep your pants on to save your life, can you, boy?”
“Shut up!” Kyo shouted into the phone, his breathing picking up slightly. “I have plenty of things to put you away; I will tell them, too!” His hand balled itself into a fist as he glared at the cover in front of him. Mayu meowed softly as she climbed into his lap, making Kyo calm slightly as he uncurled his hand and started petting her.
“Don’t you dare fucking talk to me like that!” Kyo’s father yelled back just as loudly. “Don’t you think that I can’t find you just because you’re living somewhere else, Tooru. You little slut, I don’t know where you get off thinking you can get away from me. The courts will choose us over your fuck-buddy, Tooru—when you’re back here, I swear that bastard baby of yours will be gone.” The threat was vague but still intimidating.
“I’m not going back, you bastard! I’ve had enough of you fucking up my life! For once, I have someone who actually cares and takes care of me right; I’m not letting you take that away from me!” Kyo shouted before closing his eyes and taking in a deep breath, trying not to push Mayu from his lap and start going into a rage.
“You can’t tell me what I can and cannot take, boy. You’re fucked up and you’re my property—nobody else’s. You are mine, Tooru; you remember that, don’t you?” Kyo’s father practically taunted the boy, feeling a sort of smugness by speaking those words. He was enjoying this, toying with his son. Maybe, just maybe, he could screw up that pregnancy of his.
Pulling the phone back, Kyo clipped it shut and took in a deep, shaking breath. He sighed, shaking his head and keeping back his tears. Flipping open the phone again, he pressed Die’s speed dial number and pulled it to his ear, waiting for Die to pick up. A few tears slipped past his closed lids as he tried his best to hold back what he could.
In Die’s pocket, his phone started vibrating. The redhead stopped in his tracks to fish it out, taking it to his ear after reading the screen and shifting his grocery bags around. “I just checked out,” Die said, “Did you think of something you needed? I could go back and get it if you want.”
“I… I need you to come…” He sniffled softly, using his free hand to rub away the falling tears before opening his eyes once more. Kyo moved to lie back down on his side and curl up into a ball. It had to wait till Die got home; he had to wait to tell Die before getting into his cleaning spree.
Unable to hold the tears back any longer, Kyo broke down and cried heavily, his sobs echoing through the house. He felt dirty, he needed a bath. Slowly, he pulled himself up from the bed and stood, making his way to the bathroom. Turning the water on, it came out hot, steaming and creating a light fog in the room. Plugging up the tub, he grabbed his soap and shampoo, placing them on the edge of the tub and grabbed his sponge. Stripping down, he slowly sank himself down in the scalding hot water. He gave a hiss before uncapping the soap and started scrubbing away at his skin, making it red.
Kyo had been crying on the phone, that much was obvious, but even if the boy hadn’t been noticeably upset, something just seemed too off-kilter to Die. Rushing to the car, he shoved everything into the front seat and floorboard before climbing into the driver’s seat. His palms felt warm and his fingers itched the whole ride home with some strange restless feeling. There was some strange panicky vibe that the redhead couldn’t shake and it only intensified when he arrived home.
The sound of sobbing was obvious when Die got inside. Mayu greeted him at the door, mewing with what seemed to be agitation, trying to wind around his ankles. As gently as possible, Die pushed the cat aside and rushed off to find Kyo. The boy wasn’t in the bedroom, but when the taller male checked the bathroom, he did find him.
Steam floated heavily in the bathroom and the walls were beaded up with condensation from it. Kyo sat in the bathtub, clutching a sponge in his hands, wringing it viciously. His eyes were red and his hair hung listlessly, clinging to his rounded face dispiritedly. The boy’s skin glowed pink in patches, where it had plainly been scrubbed too hard.
“Kyo, how hot is that water?” Die questioned with concern, bending to touch it. The liquid made his hand throb in pain and he yanked it back quickly. “Kyo get out of there right now—that could hurt the baby!” It wasn’t that he was unconcerned about Kyo, but the baby definitely had no way of protesting or stopping something from harming her.
“I’m not clean… I need to be clean…” Kyo chanted slightly as he began rocking back and forth, opening the soap again to scrub his flesh vigorously. He started crying finally and dropped the sponge in the water, covering his face with his hands and sobbing. Sniffling heavily, he moved to pick up the sponge again and started scrubbing once more. It felt like he was tearing off his skin now, but he didn’t care, he’d do anything to be clean again.
“Kyo, what the hell are you doing?” Die’s voice raised against his will. The taller male snatched the sponge away and tossed it toward the corner, where it landed with a moist thump on the tile floor. Reaching down, Die hauled the other up by his upper arms, forcing him to stand a little. All of this happened in a matter of seconds, but to Die it had seemed to occur too slowly for his tastes.
“Get out, right now,” he ordered, making the other clamber out of the tub awkwardly. Water dripped off the smaller male’s frame and soaked the bathmat, darkening the blue fabric to a blackish color. “What happened while I was gone?” Die questioned, calming himself down enough to ask questions without seeming threatening.
Kyo lowered his head and sniffled, hiccupping every now and then as his frame shook. “My… My dad called…” His voice was small as he grabbed a towel and started drying himself off. Kyo still felt dirty, an unsatisfied look on his face showing that. He used the towel to dry his hair and wrapped it around his body, holding it close.
“What did he say to you?” Die inquired, pushing the boy’s damp hair back gently. “Does he not realize that there is a restraining order against him and your mother?” It certainly didn’t seem that way, judging by how upset Kyo was behaving.
“He… he said he’d come find me… and that if I called the police that they’d just take me back to them… I don’t want to go back.” He sniffled, averting his gaze from the taller male. Kyo felt guilty now, he dirtied the one thing he loved. “I’m sorry…”
Gingerly, Die embraced the smaller male, careful not to agitate his tender skin. “Don’t apologize. Never apologize for this shit; it’s not your fault. You’ve done nothing wrong.” The taller redhead was trying everything he could to instill in Kyo’s head the fact that he was faultless.
“I… I got you dirty… I’m sorry.” His voice was small as he kept his head down. Kyo knew that he should tell Die what was going on, but he didn’t want the other to hate him after that. He decided that if Die asked, he would tell him.
“Stop saying that, there isn’t anything on either of us.” There was no way there could be; Kyo’s skin was practically washed raw. Any trace of anything unclean would have been long gone. “I need you to do something for me,” Die started hesitantly, stepping back far enough to make Kyo look at him. “I need you to go lie down. I’ll come put something on your skin in a minute, but please, just lie down.”
“Okay…” Kyo gave a small nod and moved to the bedroom. Grabbing some clean clothes, he pulled them on and went to the bed. Climbing in, he curled up into a ball and sniffled, a few stray tears falling past his eyelids. If only Die knew… if he told him, he’d know why they were both dirty.
Die lingered in the bathroom for a few moments longer, straightening up. He unstopped the tub and retrieved the sponge from the floor, placing it neatly on the tub’s edge. Opening up the medicine cabinet, he found some cream that would keep Kyo’s skin from being so irritated.
Hesitating, Die placed the ointment down on the sink, trying to get a hold of himself before going to the boy. Deciding to give the other a few moments alone, Die went and got the groceries from out in the car and placed them away. With all possible distractions removed, he went back to the bathroom and got the ointment and went to the bedroom. “Kyo?” he started gently, worried. “I need to put this on you.”
Nodding, Kyo sat up and pulled off the oversized shirt he was wearing. Pushing the covers away, he crossed his legs and sat with his hands in his lap and his head down. He took in a deep breath and let it out slowly, sniffling and hiccupping slightly as he did his best to calm down.
Carefully, Die worked to rub the ointment into Kyo’s skin. The boy’s arms and chest were pink and sore-looking, but luckily, his furious self-cleansing hadn’t been inflicted on his pregnant belly. Worse than Kyo’s arms were his legs, though; the boy’s thighs were more raw-looking than his upper limbs, mottled with red in blotches. “Stay put; take a nap; anything,” Die said, frowning, when he was finished. “I’ll be right back, I promise.”
Giving another nod, Kyo pulled his shirt back on and moved to curl up on his side once more. He sniffled again and closed his eyes, taking comfort in the fact that Die was doing anything to help him instead of harming him. Feeling the bed dip, he felt Mayu lay up against him tightly, trying to comfort him as well.
Die went into the kitchen and rinsed his hands clean of the cream, drying them on a dishrag. Frustrated, he placed the cloth on the counter and braced against it for a moment, breathing deeply in and out. Glancing at the clock, Die noted that it was lunch time for Kyo. Silently, he set about making a sandwich and pouring a small glass of milk for the boy in hopes of keeping his thoughts neutral, but to no avail.
Every time things got to the point where they were good, something happened to make Kyo miserable. By getting the boy pregnant, Die had ultimately lifted him out of the epicenter of a dysfunctional, chaotic home life; this much he acknowledged. One would think that a family that so visibly resented their child and his inescapable differences would be thrilled to have him unwilling to return home. In spite of that, they seemed to be more determined than ever to hound Kyo until he caved and crawled back. Something about that struck a very sour note with Die. It didn’t make a bit of sense; in fact, it bothered him quite a bit. Something was so wrong that it was tangible.
Sighing inwardly, the redhead put Kyo’s sandwich on a small plate and picked up the glass of milk. He headed back to the bedroom and placed both items on the nightstand, near his alarm clock. “You need to eat if you can,” Die said, sitting carefully next to Kyo and waiting to see the boy react. Mayu meowed softly and bumped her patchwork head against Die’s side, prompting him to pet her gently.
“Okay…” Sitting up once more, Kyo sighed and took the plate from where Die had set it. He ate the sandwich quietly, pausing to take a sip from his milk. Once the food was eaten, he placed the empty plate and glass back on the nightstand. Kyo pulled Mayu into his lap and started petting her slowly and carefully, making her purr and push towards his hand every time it made contact with her.
Frowning, Die reached over and took one of Kyo’s hands between his own. He rubbed at the appendage slowly, contemplating how to start the conversation. “Your father wants you home… What did he say when he called you?” Die asked, unsure of where he was going. The taller redhead disliked Kyo’s father far more than Kyo’s mother and knowing that he had called to beleaguer the boy made him angry.
“Just what I told you earlier…” He left out the other bits of conversation. Kyo wanted to say something, but he feared that Die would leave him to go back to his father. Drawing in a shaky breath, Kyo decided to take a chance. “He… also said… that I didn’t know how to keep my pants on and said… that the courts would make me go back to them and that when I do… he’d make me get an abortion… And…” Taking in a breath again, he closed his eyes. “He said… that I was fucked up and that… that he owns me.”
A low burn of anger started deep in Die’s gut and spread upward, making his breathing feel harder than it really was. Only someone with serious issues could say or even think things like that to their child. Slipping his fingers between Kyo’s, Die remained silent, thinking. God, he just knew it… Something kept nagging at him, maybe something that he didn’t truly want to know, but something that he needed clarified sooner rather than later. “Kyo… did he ever touch you?”
Biting his lip and nodding, Kyo clenched his eyes shut and sniffled. His hand gripped Die’s hand tightly and let out a sigh. “He… he was the one that made me get birth control pills… Before I ever went to the club… he…” Letting out a sob, he took in a deep breath. “Why would someone do that to their own child?” His voice was soft as his body shook slightly.
There was exactly what Die had been dreading hearing. “I don’t know,” he murmured, squeezing Kyo’s hand slightly. The boy had mentioned the birth control, so did that mean that his father had raped him? The thought sickened Die greatly. Not on Kyo’s part, but over the idea that a man could be so depraved as to take advantage of his own flesh and blood. “When did it happen first?”
“I… I don’t know… I don’t remember when it first started… but I do remember when I was six and… he did that. He got me the pills when I hit puberty. He would always spank me when I did something wrong… I kind of remember when… he touched me in wrong places… Then when it actually happened, but I can’t remember anything until recently…” Kyo admitted. He had blocked many of those memories so they wouldn’t consume him.
On some level, Die felt like just as bad of a person and Kyo’s father was. This boy had been abused, raped, and betrayed by someone who was supposed to care for him. Die touched him and did all sorts of things to him, knowing how young he was, and felt little guilt. “Come here,” Die said, tugging at the boy’s hand gently, urging him closer.
Moving to sit in Die’s lap, he curled up against him and held back a sob. “I don’t want to go back… I just know that he would do those things all over again…” He took in a shaky breath and whimpered softly, feeling himself starting to cry once more. “I know he’s not giving up… I know he’s going to come look for me…”
Die wrapped his arms around Kyo and cradled him, smoothing down strands of red hair. “I’m not going to give up, either. Nothing like that is ever going to happen to you again, I promise.” Die pressed his face into Kyo’s hair, breathing deeply for a moment. “I love you, Kyo.”
