The room remained in darkness as it had done for the past three days. Georgiana had kept the curtains pulled closed. Closing out the world, closing out the sun, closing out the day. Each morning she had lay in her bed, praying that Colin would walk through the door with the keys but he had not returned. The only visitor had been Dilsbury who had barked at her to get up and wash and dress for the day, roughly pulled open the curtains and insisted that the headmaster would not be impressed if she remained in bed. Georgiana didn’t care, her whole body felt numb after what that man had done to her. She hadn’t felt like eating, moving or leaving the room. She would wait until Dilsbury had left and then crawl out of bed, pull the curtains back across and return under the covers.
The door creaked slowly open and Georgiana jumped, her heart soared for a moment thinking it might be Colin; she raised her head form the pillow before frowning as Worthington’s fat face peeked around. She turned her back on him, hearing his heavy footsteps as he approached the bed.
“Georgiana, are you awake?”
She ignored him, pushing her face further into her pillow.
“I have come in with some medication, in case you were feeling unwell. None of us have seen you up and about for a few days.” He waited for a response but she remained silent. With a sigh he placed a plastic pot on the bedside table.
“Well, its here if you want it. Something a bit stronger than you might expect, just between you and me. I’ll leave you alone now.” With that she heard him turn about and his footsteps faded towards the door. As it slammed behind him, she turned to see the two pills that had been left for her. Anything that would kill the pain in her body and mind was welcome so she swallowed them both down and lay back on the bed. It surprised her that Worthington had been so civil, maybe he was worried she might die and then he would have to dispose of a body, she laughed to herself thinking that was probably the case. Pulling aside the curtain an inch or so she peeked out to see the girls in the courtyard below, rushing around, carrying on their lives as if nothing was wrong. How could they not realise all this was going on over their heads? She wondered if Colin was sitting alone like she was now and why the hell had he not been back to see her yet. She paused form her thoughts and took a deep breath in as tingles shot up and down her spine, whatever this medication was, it felt good! Her mind trickled in and out of thoughts, not lingering on the bad things. The pain in her groin and across her stomach eased and softened. Laying back on the bed she fell into a contented sleep, the first for a long time
“Worthington!” the headmaster barked, bumping into him as he was on his way out of Georgiana’s room. “What the devil are you doing now?”
“Checking on our little princess. She hasn’t been out of her room for days now.”
“I’m aware of that!” The headmaster scoffed, waving an arm as if he didn’t care. “Stupid girl, as if it’s going to change anything if she sulks for a few days. I have tired of her already.”
“I thought so headmaster!” Worthington nodded slowly. “I was wondering, has anyone showed interest in purchasing her?”
“Not as yet, I may have had a few questions asked but she is still too feisty. After what has happened I can’t risk letting her go yet. It’s a big, big problem.”
“I see, well, I was wondering, um...” Worthington mumbled, shifting his feet around nervously.
“Spit it out man”
“Would I be permitted to purchase her?”
The headmaster doubled over, roaring with laughter. “Oh dear, dear me, I must say however much I am glad you drew my attention to her relationship with Mr Firth, I can’t offer you any sort of discount or , and forgive me for saying this, see how you would be able to afford the fee!”
“On the contrary” Worthington replied quickly. “Now Lord Grant has deteriorated, he has handed over his finances to me, I have full control of his fortune, to pay bills, keep the estate running and of course have the odd treat myself! So I can afford anything my heart desires, and I desire her!”
The headmaster looked up, a grin spreading across his face.
“Oh this is divine, just divine...how hilarious! Lord Grant is in effect paying for his own niece to belong to you. Oh that’s just perfect, I like it, I like it a lot!” He stood up again, wiping his eyes and a wry smile came across his face.
“Actually, let’s put an extra bit of fun on this one, just for my amusement. You pay me the money by ten tonight and she is yours...but she has to agree to marry you before you can leave.”
“OK.” Worthington held out a hand. “Shake on it, it’s a deal, she’ll be choosing a wedding dress by the end of the week!”
The headmaster shook his hand heartily before walking away laughing to himself.
. ..........................................................................................................................................................Two weeks passed. Georgiana had still not left her room and remained in bed, Worthington had bought in medication every day which she took, not caring what it was , just relieved that it switched off her brain from over thinking. It was a bright and sunny Friday when he strolled in, not knocking for the first time. Georgiana had got past the point of hating him, although she still really had no desire to speak to him.“How are you feeling?” He asked, handing her the pills which she took immediately.
“Shit.” She replied and picked up the blankets intending to disappear beneath them.
“Wait, I just want to talk to you.”
“Fuck off Worthington.” Came the taut reply from beneath the covers.
“That’s not very nice, I’ve been coming in here trying to help you...”
“Nice...nice! “ She laughed. “Yeah like lying to me that Colin had left when you knew damn well he was coming back. “
“Oh...that.” Worthington looked down for a moment, remembering. “Look, I have to admit when you first came here I didn’t like you all that much. I saw all the stress you gave your uncle back home and then your attitude when you got here. I thought that you deserved to suffer here. But there is something that has changed my mind. Please listen to me, you need to understand.”
“Go ahead, can’t guarantee I won’t fall asleep while you explain.”
“Your uncle, he has deteriorated quite rapidly. You need to come home as soon as possible.”
Georgiana shot up suddenly, her hand flying to her mouth.
“Oh god no, what’s happened...I can’t get home, you know that! Find Colin....I , I mean Mr Firth, please go and find him and get him to come and speak to me as soon a she can.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea...” Worthington began. Georgiana grabbed his hands in her own, to plead with him.
“Please, I need you to do this. He hasn’t been up to see me for ages; I guess he must have been busy ...”
“Busy, um yes. Look.” Worthington held her hands in his own and sighed. “I’m afraid there’s something you need to know. He won’t be coming back; he’s been rather busy with other matters, like the new girl he has been given charge of. A real problem case apparently.”
“I don’t believe you, you bloody lied before!” Georgiana screamed at him, grabbing at her hair franticly. “I want him to come up here now, go and find him and tell him I need him here!”
Silently, Worthington grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the window, pulling aside the curtain she blinked at the daylight hitting her pale face. There down in the courtyard sat on the fountain was Colin with a dark haired girl sat next to him. They both had their back to the window, she willed him to look up and see her but he did not. At one point he put his arm around the girl and seemed to be consoling her. Georgiana jumped up screaming and banging at the window wildly with her fist. How could he be doing this to her. Why was he wasting time sat there with some other girl when he promised he would spend every waking moment trying to get her out and take her home.
“What in the name of sanity is going on?” The headmaster burst into the room. “For god’s sake stop her she’s going insane”
Worthington attempted to pull her back but she bit his hand and pulled away shouting Colin’s name and thumping her fist on the window with all her might. Shaking his hand in pain he backed off and turned to fetch a syringe from his bag. Swiftly he jabbed it into the back of her thigh and stood for a moment before she took a small gasp and fell back into his arms. Placing her carefully on the bed he looked up at the frowning headmaster.
“No more of this! If she is mad then she must be removed to a psychiatric hospital. I do not need insanely screeching females that belong in a mad house.”
“Sorry headmaster.” Worthington replied “I can assure you it won’t happen again!”
“May I ask if it is common practice for you to carry a syringe around with you Worthington?” The headmaster frowned, glancing down at the calmly sleeping Georgiana.“I admit I was fearing for the girl’s sanity so I came prepared. You can trust me headmaster, I know what I am administering. I am usually responsible for Lord Grant’s medication and...”
“Yes, yes yes, I don’t need to know your bloody medical CV man! I was simply ensuring you know what you are doing!” The headmaster waved an arm, not having time for elongated explanations. Indeed, he was hoping the whole situation would be over with sooner rather than later. If the girl was to marry Worthington it would take a whole lot of stress from his shoulders. He had thought that her stay in the tower would result in her learning some obedience but her will was too strong. He feared that she would either do something ridiculous or put them all at risk of being discovered. Now, if Worthington was dabbling in controlled substances, he may have another problem approaching.
“I take it these ‘medications’ are from a legal source and you . I also trust that you know your dosage and are not endangering this girl’s life!”
“Yes, all legitimate and she is completely safe. I can give you a list of what I have, all stored in a locked safe in the hospital wing. If I remove any amount it is signed for and checked by a witness at the time.” Worthington assured him, holding Georgiana’s wrist and checking her pulse. “I will stay with her until she awakens.”
The headmaster nodded as he left.
“Just like your mother!” Worthington shook his head and took her hand. He remained sat with Georgiana until she stirred. He had himself dozed off in the chair at that point, his head lolling until he heard her groan and shift about the bed. She lay for a while staring at him blankly trying to work out what had happened. She remembered looking out of the window, seeing Colin and then nothing. She reached out a shaky hand for the glass of water he handed to her. Drinking it all down, her dry cracked throat eased.
“H, how long have I been asleep? I don’t know what happened, I feel weird, did I faint or something?”
“Yes my dear girl, it’s your state of mind. I hate to break it to you but you haven’t been eating properly or getting any daylight in the room. “
“Do you have any more of those pills; they might make this headache go away!” She asked, pushing his hand away and remembering how much she disliked him.
“Yes little lady, I have pills but you had better start being a bit more friendly towards me or I won’t help you!” Worthington frowned.”I shall leave you to think on it!” With that he swept out of the room, slamming the door behind him. Georgiana sat up slightly and raised her pillows to ease her neck. She thought back to seeing Colin out of the window and how he looked so normal, so unconcerned to not even give a glance up to her window. That he had not been in to visit her since the last night they had spent together worried her greatly. He had promised to return and bring her home yet so far it was looking more and more like he had forgotten her. She closed her eyes and blinked away the tears. This was so unfair, to feel such a deep longing for someone who obviously did not return those emotions. Perhaps the whole thing had been too difficult for him, perhaps the girl outside was his new interest and maybe he would sit holding her close in the evenings having forgotten all about her.
Worthington had confused her too, he hated her, he always had done and never would he have had a conversation with her as he did earlier, and even acted concerned. With a thin veil over what was reality and fiction, maybe to keep on his good side might mean he would give her some more of the painkillers that had numbed not only her body but her mind. Switching off the thoughts and if it was to be that she was destined to be sold off to some old pervert then at least she could be happily out of her mind trough the whole process. Pulling aside the curtain she put a hand on the pane, it was quiet out there now, no one about but her mind still saw the image of them sat there together, talking closely. Warm tears splashed silently down onto the sill as she wrapped the blanket around herself and huddled by the window watching the stars twinkling between the clouds. If the window had not bars on it then she would have been tempted to open it wide and throw herself to the ground.
