“She said what?!” Hayden dropped into a chair, gripping the phone as if he would squeeze the life out of the voice ringing in his ear.
“She told George she thought the fashion shoot the two of you are doing with Annie wasn’t a good idea,” Ewan’s voice repeated.
“You have got to be kidding!” Hayden pressed a hand over his eyes. It had been three weeks since their ‘encounter’ and in spite of his many phone calls to everyone he could reach who was connected to Natalie in some form or fashion he’d gotten nowhere. Finally, her personal assistant told him to stop and just leave Natalie alone. There was no way shs gos going to allow him access to her employer. Without actually saying it, she made it clear that she blamed him for upsetting Natalie. He had hurt her in some nefarious way. Hayden snorted at the remembered conversation and knew Natalie hadn’t confided in her assistant or anyone else. They were clueless.
Hayden sighed and shook his head. He knew the drill. She would do everything within her power to make sure they were never alone. That way they could not discuss what had happened and why she ran away. Well, she could run, but, eventually, he’d catch her and they would have this long overdue heart to heart.
“She said that Annie likes to do romantic shots of the two of you and this movie didn’t have a lot of romance in it and so it probably wouldn’t be timely or something lame like that. Did something happen between you two?” Ewan asked, his voice dripping with interest.
Hayden ran his long fingers through his wavy hair and hunched over, res his his elbows on his knees. “Yea, you might say that.”
“What?”
“None of your damn business.” He stood up and walked to the window gazing out at the dreary London sky, noticing the mood matching drabness.
“So, it’s like that, is it?” Ewan chuckled, knowingly. “Well, either way, don’t stay at that nasty hotel. Pack up and come stay with us. I can’t even believe you wanted to stay there. You always stay here when you’re in town!”
A small, humorless smile curled Hayd lip lip. He had hoped staying alone would give him a chance to straighten things out with Natalie. His heart bumped raggeagaiagainst his ribs at the thought. Now, he contemplated the likelihood she would never allow him the chance to be alone with her again.
“Maybe I will,” he answered, frowning at the gray sky, wishing for some of England’s watery sunshine.
“Well, the offer’s open,” Ewan reassured.
“Thanks, Ewan, I appreciate it. We’ll see.”
Hayden hung up the phone, walked over to the bed and fell backwards onto the hard mattress. The firm bed refused to give with his weight and he grimaced as the wind whooshed out of him. Maybe he should go to Ewan’s. This bed was definitely not conducive to a good night’s sleep. On the other hand, it would lend a nastiness to his demeanor that would serve his portrayal of Vader.
As he contemplated the possibilities, the phone rang again. lingling over, he reached for the bedside phone.
“Hello?”
“Hi, Hayden, I hope you’re all settled in.”
“Hi, George, thanks. Yes, but I’m thinking of going to Ewan’s after all.”
“I figured as much,” George’s voice grinned down the line. “Listen, I’m having a problem with Natalie doing the photo shoot tomorrow. She doesn’t want to do it and she’s trying to pull a diva fit on me.”
“Really?” Hayden voice rose in surprise. The one thing Natalie was not was a diva. She was doing everything in her power to cancel this shoot. Desperation must have possessed her. Either that or fear. Fear of facing him.
“She thinks Annie will be too romantic for your characters,” George explained, his voice wry. “But, I’m not worried. I don’t know how she got the idea Annie was photographing you two as your characters because she’s not. She’s not doing a Star Wars promo shoot. This was her idea, not mine! I got fed up and just let Natalie go on until she ran herself out
“A
“And?” Hayden’s voice rose in suspicion.
“And then I told her she would report tomorrow morning at Annie’s studio for the all day shoot and if I had to pull out her contract to remind her I would,” George finished with an easygoing lilt. Hayden’s brows rose at George’ssualsual demeanor. “She wasn’t happy, but oh well. She won’t be smiling tomorrow because she’s not getting her way, which will probably suit Annie just fine.”
“Why?”
“I think Annie is going for an unsmiling, passionate look,” George explained, chuckling. “When I spoke to her, she was teetering back and forth between playfully funny, and darkly passionate. One spectrum to the other, I guess, so be prepared for anything from Annie and don’t let Natalie bully you.”
en cen choked on his laugh. “The last thing Natalie is going to be able to do is bully me.”
“Good man,” George said, amusement warming his voice. “I’m just passing you on a friendly warning because she is really sore at me at the moment and it might get transferred to you. She’s even angrier because Annie has forbidden any other people at the shoot. No assistants, no friends, no managers, not even picky directors.”
“No problem, George, I can handle Natalie,” Hayden reassured, a pleased smile lighting his face and his outlook. “It will be fine.”
When the call ended, Hayden strolled over to the window and looked out at the now rainy sky with new eyes. Yep, the day was growing brighter already. Turning, he grabbed his suitcase, swung it on the bed and repacked. One night in the hotel bed would be plenty of time to dream of despicable things to do to Natalie. Tomorrow night he would sleep in one of Ewan’s nice cozy bedrooms and have pleasant dreams.
