Darren’s been watching Shelley through the heavy smoke all night and couldn’t work it out… was she and Jean best friends? Lovers? They giggled like schoolgirls. Called each other names. Jean performed a pole dancing session just for a selected crowd of 10 or 15 people in a tiny backstareaarea room. Shelley called her a cheap whore. Jean laughed in her face. “At least I am getting some action you silly cow”. They touched each other and looked at each other like they were in love. They talked like they were enemies. They laughed like they know each other for million years.
Time after time Darren looked at Daniel and caught him eyeing the crowd with interest. He must have missed it all this time with me, Darren thought. Sharp pain cutting through his heart watching Daniel’s profile. He wasn’t made for hiding. He was born to be what he is, flirting came so easily, Darren had never seen this side of his lover. Why couldn’t life be more simple? Darren sighed and felt a jolt of jealousy through his body as someone made a move on Daniel and actually sat in his lap laughing a feminine laugh of pure worry free joy. Darren didn’t despise those people. On the opposite, he envied them.
“Little lovebirds, were are you staying?” Shelley asked once they were out on the street and kissing last goodbyes to the strongest crowd of party people who were still on their feet. They were in a hurry to disappear before the bright sunshine hits them just few hours later. It was close to 6 a.m.
“Can we just walk?” Darren asked, “I need to sober up, world is spinning”
“This is the best state this world can be in, hun,” Shelley smiled and started walking with them. “Which hotel?”
“Where did Jean disappear?” Darren asked after a few minutes of silence. He immediately regretted it as Shelley’s sensual voice let out a bitter silent laughter.
“Oh the magic disappearing act of Jean, always a mystery!” Shelley waved her arms in the air like throwing glittery dust around them.
“Sorry, I didn’t know… I mean, you’re not together?”
“Me and Jean? Bite your tongue, evil bitch!” Shelley laughed again, more lively this time, “we are so alike, we’d murder each other on the spot. It wouldn’t work. Never worked when we tried. But we’re the same age, we’ve been through the same shit… If everything else fails, I know I’ve got someone to grow old with…” after a short silence she continued, “theoretically we are still roommates but she’s like the wind… you just never know! I’ve no idea where she goes, I am not her mother and I don’t even miss her when she’s gone!”
They walked the empty streets of San Francisco, daylight slowly crawling upon them.
“I only needed a roommate, you know,” Shelley was in her own thoughts and was mumbling barely audibly. “It wasn’t a dating ad, just me looking for someone to share my cat food costs with…”
She turned to Daniel, who’s been extremely quiet all the way since they walked out of the club. “Did you know I had such a shit time few years back I couldn’t really pay my rent properly, but I couldn’t move to a smaller place, I love my garden too much … I also couldn’t cut on any spendings, I spent my week’s grocery money on one lipstick cause the girl needs to take care of herself… I wrote an ad. A gorgeous cross dressing queen, shattered dreams, guttered into reality, looking for someone brave enough to be with me, a girl spending more on flowers than food, help me to feed my pretty cats and move into my garden. Jean was a god’s gift.”
Long silence and 3 blocks later Shelley continued, “you know some people on this planet do still take care of each other…”
Darren felt an urge to reach for Daniel’s hand but he was too far away, on the other side of Shelley.
“Let’s get me a cab boys, these shoes are killing me!” Shelley screamed neurotically, waking them both up from their semi-drowsiness.
“You think Jean is gonna be home then?” Darren asked.
“Yeah sure! And the pope smokes dope at this very moment!” Shelley smiled a sad smile, “I love her. Didn’t mean to get you down with my talking, I don’t cling to people. I am used to being on my own.”
“Fucking faggot!” someone screamed from a car passing by.
“How delightful,” Shelley wasn’t upset a tiny bit. “Every time I hear this I realise I am more of a man any of those bitches are. They should walk a mile in my drag.” Shelley smiled. “Here’s a cab, see ya boys, come by for a coffee, Danny boy has my address, I am always home till Noon…”
She kissed Daniel on the lips. Then hugged Darren. Involuntarily Darren hugged her back, smelling her sweet perfume and wrapping his hands around her fit body.
“You’re ok?” Darren asked Daniel when they resumed their walking.
“Yeah, just pissed,” Daniel moved closer to Darren and put his hand around Darren’s waist.
“Yeah I know… I am dead tired…”
“Yeah, Shelley has that tiring effect on people…” Daniel grinned.
“Not just Shelley, all the people there… I was quite… taken aback…”
Darren didn’t know how to formulate what he was going to say.
“It’s a different world than the one we live in.” Daniel said, “I didn’t know what to make of it when I met it first, but now…”
Daniel fell silent.
“Do you miss Shelley then? As a friend?” Darren asked.
“Can we just get to the hotel and have some sleep?” Daniel lowered his head on Darren’s shoulder as they kept walking, arms around each other.
“This is surreal,” Darren commented.
“Shut up!” Daniel snapped.
They parted their embrace before entering the hotel lobby. They’ve been reckless and silly enough already.
To their shock and surprise, they bumped directly into Elena probably already on her way to have breakfast.
“What a sight!” she rolled her eyes.
Darren and Daniel suddenly felt so silly they fell into a fit of laughter.
“Morning, Elena, enjoy your breakfast,” Darren finally gasped when they calmed down… The pair of them tried to leave towards an elevator.
“Don’t you think you will just get away with it, but go on, get some sleep, for god’s sake!!!” She wasn’t even mad. It was something else. Neither of the two had the energy or brains to go into it, so Darren and Daniel just quietly disappeared, for some reason trying to quiet their laughing down. It was 8 in the morning.
